The 2025 Indian Premier League will be the 18th edition of the Indian Premier League, a franchise Twenty20 cricket league in India, organized by the Board of Control for Cricket in India. The tournament will feature ten teams competing in 84 matches. It will be held across 13 cities in India, with Kolkata hosting the opening ceremony and the final.

Kolkata Knight Riders are the defending champions, having won their third title during the previous season after beating Sunrisers Hyderabad. The format is as 2022, unlike 2023, with changes in group order. Each team will be playing twice against the teams in their group, against the team in the same row in the other group, and once against the remaining four teams in the other group.

After the group stage, the top four teams based on aggregate points qualified for the playoffs. In this stage, the top two teams compete with each other (in a match titled "Qualifier 1"), as do the remaining two teams (in a match titled "Eliminator"). While the winner of Qualifier 1 directly qualified for the final match, the losing team has another chance to qualify for the final match by competing against the winning team of the Eliminator match (in a match titled "Qualifier 2"). The winner of this subsequent Qualifier 2 match will move on to the final match. The team that wins the final match will be crowned the Indian Premier League winners.

Zaheer Khan Appointed as New Mentor for Lucknow Super Giants Ahead of IPL 2025 Season

A new era has been ushered in with the Lucknow Super Giants as the IPL franchise has hired former World Cup winner and Indian pacer Zaheer Khan as the new team mentor for the upcoming 2025 season of the IPL.

LSG owner Sanjiv Goenka called for a press conference reagrding the future of his franchise, and one of his first orders of business was to announce Zaheer into the LSG family.

The former Indian pacer shall be filling in the role left open after the departure of Indian team’s head coach Gautam Gambhir when he parted ways to rejoin his beloved KRR befoer IPL 2024.

This won’t be his first stint in managerial/coaching roles though. From 2018 to 2022, Zaheer was involved with the Mumbai Indians (MI) franchise, first as director of cricket and then head of global development.

Prior to that, he was part of three IPL teams as a player – Mumbai Indians, Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Delhi Daredevils.

Zaheer shall join the ranks of LSG head coach Justin Langer, who is said to continue his tenure, with Lance Klusener and Adam Voges as his assistants.

“I will make sure that the process that is required to LSG the next level is there. The next season is going to be a special one,” stated an ecstatic Zaheer at the press conference in Kokata, as per RevSportz.

Another point of order though that remains for Goenka to address is that of KL Rahul’s future with the franchise.

According to a report in Cricbuzz on Monday (August 26), Rahul, who joined the Lucknow-based franchise for Rs 17 crore ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, met LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka on Monday in the franchise’s Kolkata office.

The one-hour-long meeting between the two was reportedly centred around the team composition for the new season of the cash-rich league and the potential retention of Rahul.

While there is no guarantee that LSG will retain Rahul, the fact that he was called on by the owner could be a pointer to it.

At the presser, Goenka was hesitant to spill the beans on KL Rahul’s future with the Lucknow franchise, stating that he wanted to avoid speculation of any sort.

“I don’t want to comment on speculation. All I will say is that KL Rahul is family,” Goenka stated as per reports from RevSportz.

“KL Rahul is an important and integral part of the Supergiants family.”

India's Richest Man Backs Out From Buying Billion-dollar IPL-winning Franchise: Report

India’s richest man, Gautam Adani and the Adani Group have backed out from the race to buy the 2022 Indian Premier League Champions, Gujarat Titans and the majority stake is set to be bought by Ahmedabad-based Torrent Group.

According to a report by The Economic Times, the Gujarat-based franchise is set to have a change in ownership with a verbal agreement in place with the current owners, CVC Capital Partners in a deal valued at over 1 billion USD (8390 crores in INR).

As per the report, “Torrent and CVC have a gentleman’s agreement in place for the Gujarat Titans since a formal deal can only be signed after the lock-in period ends,” one of the sources said on condition of anonymity.”

The deal would only be possible after the ownership lock-in period comes to an end which is in February 2025.

The reported deal would see Torrent Group acquire the majority stake while CVC Capital Partners would still have significant minority shares as well.

Sources as per the report have suggested that the Adani Group might have backed out of the deal due to the high price tag along with the organisation looking to shift their focus on their core businesses which include power and ports.

It is to be noted that both Adani and Torrent Groups had been part of the race to acquire the franchise rights for Gujarat back in 2021. They had bid 5100 crores and 4653 crore INR respectively. But CVC Capital partners had the biggest bid of 5625 crores INR.

The franchise will have to acquire clearance from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to ensure that the deal is finalised.

Torrent Group, an Ahmedabad-based organisation specialises in the power and pharma industries with a market capitalisation of INR 2 lakh crores. Ahead of the 2021 auction, for the franchise rights, they had also set up the Torrent Sports Ventures as well.

Titans after winning the 2022 title have gone to to make the finals in the 2023 season following which saw a slump where they failed to make it to the playoffs for the first time in their brief history in the tournament.

A billion USD for a cricket franchise that's 1) asset light with no stadium etc and 2) has practically no history in a league that is itself relatively recent seems absurd but when you look at the cashflow it does not seem as madcap. Still pricey at a multiple of 20x their annual earning though.

BCCI to Delay Announcement on IPL 2025 Retention Policy Till End of September: Report

Ahead of the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League, franchise owners will be keenly waiting on the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s announcement where they announce the retention rules before the mega-auctions.

A report from Cricbuzz claims that the BCCI could delay the announcement till the end of the month possibly making the news public during the Annual General Meeting (AGM) which is slated to take place on September 29.

The announcement which was supposed to be made by the end of August could be delayed as franchise officials are reportedly being informed that there could be a delay in the final retention rules being made public.

The upcoming IPL mega-auction could serve as a platform for all franchises to completely overhaul their side in a bid to be title contenders in the long-term perspective. Due to the delay in announcing the retention rules, franchises would have to bide in their time and hope that the policies would work in their favour.

The report also claimed that all the teams would have a deadline of November 15 to finalise their retentions and the Right-to-Match card will also be a feature present in the mega-auction which is supposed to be held in December 2024.

Speculations have already begun with several big-name players tipped to be released from their respective squads, this would prove to be an opportunity for other franchises to possibly bag some fine talents to bolster their respective squads.

A notable change that was announced earlier was the appointment of Rahul Dravid as the Head Coach of the Rajasthan Royals following his stint as Team India’s Head Coach where he was part of the national team’s T20 World Cup 2024 winning campaign in Barbados.

It will be interesting to see the franchises pick out their retentions based on the policy that is yet to be announced as several sides could be forced to release some fine talents that could ply their trade in a new outfit.

Jeez , IPL is already back. Just felt like 2024 IPL barely got over ! Am shuddering to think what happens when they will plan for 2 IPL's every year in the not so distant future as Ravi shastri had suggested ;)

2 IPLs will kill the whole vibe and excitement of this event. I think there should be only 1 IPL like it is now.

Ricky Ponting Poised for Blockbuster Move as Punjab Kings Head Coach in IPL Shake-Up

Former Australian captain Ricky Ponting has signed a multi-year deal with Punjab Kings as their head coach in the Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise confirmed the news via their social media accounts.

“I am grateful to Punjab Kings for presenting me with the opportunity to be the new Head Coach. I am excited to take up the new challenge. I had great conversations with the owners and the management about the way forward and was truly elated to see the alignment of our visions for the team. We all want to repay the fans who have stayed with the franchise over the years and we promise that they will see a much different Punjab Kings going forward,” said Ponting in an official release.

Ponting had a seven-year stint with Delhi Capitals, starting in 2018, before stepping down earlier this year following a period of mixed results. During his tenure, the Capitals made the Playoffs in 2019, 2020, and 2021, with their highlight being a runner-up finish in 2020, marking the team’s first-ever appearance in an IPL final.

Support Staff to be Finalised by Ponting

Reports suggest that Ponting will also take a call on the support staff. Last year, apart from Bayliss, PBKS’ support staff included Sanjay Bangar (head of cricket development), Charl Langveldt (fast-bowling coach), and Sunil Joshi (spin-bowling coach).

Bayliss was part of the Kolkata Knight Riders coaching set-up which under the captaincy of Gautam Gambhir managed to win the title in 2012 and 2014. However, he has not been able to replicate any form of success within the Punjab setup.

The franchise will also be looking to appoint a new captain after Shikhar Dhawan announced his retirement earlier this year. While Sam Curran led PBKS for a few games in the previous season, with the mega auctions coming up, Ponting’s first priority will be to zero down on the players the franchise would like to retain ahead of the Auction.

In July of this year, Delhi Capitals confirmed the exit of Ponting. The 49-year-old has been part of the franchise as head coach since the 2018 season and helped them reach the final in 2020. However, in the past three seasons, Delhi Capitals failed to qualify for the playoffs and finished 5th, 9th and 6th respectively.

Before joining the Delhi Capitals in the 2018 season, Ponting had served as Mumbai Indians head coach in the cash-rich league and helped them win in the 2015 edition of the world’s richest franchise cricket league under Rohit Sharma’s leadership.

Ponting has played for KKR in the IPL and can be an able replacement for Gautam Gambhir, who has left his role as mentor to become the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team.

BCCI may host the IPL 2025 mega auction outside India

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is considering hosting the IPL 2025 mega auction abroad. Abu Dhabi leads the shortlist, with Muscat and Doha also in the running as possible locations.

While the exact dates for the auction remain unconfirmed, sources indicate that the BCCI is considering either the second week of November or the third week of December.

The auction is expected to take place before BCCI Secretary Jay Shah assumes his new role as ICC chairman on December 1, 2024.

“The BCCI is exploring various options, and the franchises will be informed in due course about the final venue,” a source close to the development said.

The BCCI’s operations team is currently assessing the logistical requirements and availability of key personnel. A final decision on the venue is expected to be made within the next few weeks.

While speaking to a sports media outlet, new PBKS coach Ricky Ponting has made a strong statement:

"Yes, I was talking to a few teams, but it was "Project Punjab" which attracted me. It is a team that hasn't had a lot of success over a long period of time, a team that's changed coaches a lot, so I saw it as a challenge. The other exciting part is that I saw some really exciting youngsters last year at Kings that hopefully, we can attract back to the team for this season and put together a team that is going to be good enough to win the IPL."

"I mean, there's no doubting over the years that the Kings have had good players, have had good teams. They just haven't been able to win it yet. I have a longish-term deal there, and hopefully during that period of time we can win the IPL."

Punjab Kings part ways with two big wigs ahead of IPL 2025 as their coaching set-up undergoes massive revamp

Punjab Kings (PBKS) have announced the departure of their head coach, Trevor Bayliss, and head of cricket development, Sanjay Bangar ahead of IPL 2025 auction.

This decision comes after a recent announcement appointing Ricky Ponting as the franchise's new head coach ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Bayliss, who had joined PBKS after the 2022 IPL season, and Bangar, a December 2023 addition, will no longer be part of the team's coaching staff. The franchise's choice of Ponting as their new head coach comes shortly after his dismissal from the Delhi Capitals.

IPL 2025 Retention Full List: 5 Players Each Team Could Retain Ahead of Mega Auction

With reports coming in that BCCI is likely to allow IPL franchises to retain five players ahead of the IPL Player Auction to be held later this year, and with no Right to Match cards during the Mega auctions, the next couple of months will prove to be quite a handful for the respective team managements of the IPL teams. Mega auctions are always tricky for all the teams, especially for those who would have done well with their current setup the previous year. Last year Kolkata Knight Riders won the IPL trophy halting the juggernaut of the Pat Cummins-led and Travis Head-Heinrich Klassen-powered Sunrisers Hyderabad. Rajasthan Royals, with their band of solid performers, were a team to reckon with finishing third in the IPL 2024 points tally.

However, the Mega Auction is bound to shake things up. It will most likely affect these teams above the most while teams like Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans, and even Mumbai Indians would look at this as an opportunity to start afresh. If at all, the reports of 5 Player retentions and 0 RTMs are indeed true, there could be some shocking names that IPL franchises might be forced to release.

IPL Governing Council Meeting Scheduled For Saturday, Retention Announcement To Be Made Soon: Report

The Indian Premier League's governing council is all set to meet in Bengaluru on Saturday, September 28 to finalise the retention rules ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. The announcement is expected by Sunday, September 29 morning if not Saturday itself, though a formal decision is expected to be taken in the next few hours.

According to a report in Cricbuzz, a meeting of the Governing Council of IPL has been scheduled for Saturday, September 28. The report adds that the meeting is all set to take place at 11:30 am at the Four Seasons Hotel at Ganganagar in Bengaluru.

It was a hurried decision by IPL to call on the governing council members for the meeting with the notification being sent only on Friday. An announcement is expected after the meeting. But there is also a chance that the very important retention rules will first be presented in the general body meeting on Sunday and then be officially announced.

Besides the number of retentions, a much talked about topic, the general council will also decide on the venue and time of the mega auction. Till now, reports have claimed that it will be held by the end of November and in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia is reportedly interested in hosting it, with Riyadh also in the line.

There is intense speculation over the retentions, with the numbers ranging between two to eight! BCCI may settle at a number somewhere in the middle, according to the report. It might decide on five to six retentions, including the Right to Match option.

Quite a few voices were raised against the 'mega auction' and the chief advocates of its discontinuation were Kolkata Knight Riders' Shah Rukh Khan and Sunrisers Hyderabad's Kavya Maran. Their teams were the finalists in IPL 2024 and expectedly, none of them want or need to rebuild their teams.

As per reports:

The IPL franchises could be allowed to retain five players each.

The Right to Match card could return for the first time since 2018.

The BCCI is expected to announce a decision on this soon.

IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Report Says Franchise Purse To Increase From Rs 90 Crore To...

The 10 Indian Premier League (IPL) teams will be reportedly allowed to retain five players as well as the option to use one Right-to-Match (RTM) card during the upcoming mega auction. According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, the retention rules are set to be finalised ahead of BCCI 93rd Annual General Meet, to be held on September 29, Sunday. However, the report couldn't clarify how many Indian or overseas players can be part of the retained lot.

It could not yet be confirmed how many Indian players can be part of the set of retained players or whether there will be a cap on retained overseas players. What is also unknown are the retention slabs," the report claimed.

However, the report did mention that the overall purse for each team could go up to the Rs 115-120 crore mark, as compared to the salary cap of Rs 90 crore from the mega auction three years back.

"The overall purse could not be confirmed either, but it is understood it will hover around the INR 115-120 crore mark," the report added.

The date for the mega auction, most likely in the second week of November, too could be announced along with its venue.

It could not be immediately confirmed whether the decisions regarding the retention and auction will be made public after the day's meeting or after tabling it in Sunday's AGM for detailed discussion.

IPL 2025 will see a mega auction take place before the tournament, meaning most franchises will have the option to retain a handful of players to their roster. The number of retentions and other variable laws of the auction are set to be finalised on Saturday.

Unlike the 2022 auction in February and the 2023 and 2024 auctions in December, the upcoming IPL mega sale is most likely going to be a two-day affair.

In the last mega auction held in 2022, the IPL teams were permitted to retain up to four players. With the end of the three-year cycle approaching, there are differing opinions among franchises about the optimal number of retained players. While some teams argue for a larger retention cap, possibly up to eight players, others are comfortable with the existing limit of four or five.

This is massive

Does this mean the IPL is going to pay the players of all franchises? This would roughly work out to about $120k+ at the upper end.
Nope. Compulsory match fees to be paid by franchise to 12 players named on the match sheet.

Good move to award low earning players breaking threw. They could earn more in match fees than from their main contract.

This helps in sustainability of league quality .all the uncapped/domestic players will have more monetary reasons to upskill them.Even the international players who chose to skip ipl for various reasons don't want to miss out the incentive.

So minimum wage has been set!

The salary alone would earn someone USD 120K per season if they play most matches.

On top of this, the team purse is getting a hike from 90 crore to 120 crore. That's 1200 crore or USD 150 million spent on auctions annually. Not counting the total salary bill on the franchise which would come up to an additional 15 million USD.

Jay Shah has been phenomenal for Indian cricket. Increase in cap, match fees and banning players who don’t show up after the auction are all great great decisions. This will help take IPL further away than any other leagues. Match fees alone will be massive and close to what many good players get in other leagues.

A new discriminating policy was introduce in the mini auction. Salary for overseas players are capped at 18 carore.

This rule will only apply on foreign player

Isn't this a good thing for international cricket ?

Point number 6 is very important now overseas players will think twice before they make himself unavailable before start of the session
That is stupid. This will result in less players registering themselves.

If you are gonna place such rules than you need to make sure the player is also being bought.

At the end of the day, Boards give NOC not players

RP Singh while talking on a program on local media:

“Jake Fraser-McGurk will definitely stay due to his unique play style and the impact he’s had on this franchise. Rishabh Pant is going to be retained as the captain. The two spinners, Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav, will stay. For the others, you can use the RTM because many franchises will release players with the hopes of using the RTM.”

“Boult is a great option, but I would lean towards Chahal. The RTM is an option, but I think retaining Sandeep Sharma as an uncapped player will make it easier for them as he has performed well for them as a bowler.”

Former India all-rounder Ajay Jadeja while speaking on local media:

"MS Dhoni for sure. There's no doubt about that, especially because he's now an uncapped player."

"He's done a lot for the team and has no desire to be treated as the No. 1 player on the squad. His value is unquestioned."

"Ruturaj Gaikwad is the captain, and he's had a good year, so you'll hope to retain him as well. Ravindra Jadeja can't be left out either, so these three, I think, are perfect for them."

Franchises write to BCCI questioning new RTM clause

Several franchises have raised concerns about the additional advantages given to the highest bidder in the application of the Right to Match (RTM) process. They have argued that the extra opportunity undermines the definition and logic of the RTM.

In its recent announcement of the retention rules, the BCCI stated that the highest bidder in the auction will be given an additional opportunity to raise their bid before the Right to Match is exercised by the team holding the privilege. The increased bid amount can be of any value, which the entitled team has to match.

"The highest bidder will be given one final opportunity to raise their bid for a player before the team holding the RTM card can exercise their right," says the new rule which has been circulated to the franchise by the BCCI. Each team can exercise the RTM option a maximum of six times (provided they don't retain any players), including one for an uncapped player, at the auction.

The BCCI elaborates the point. "For example, if Team 1 holds the RTM for Player X and Team 2 has placed the highest bid of Rs. 6 Cr, then Team 1 will be first asked if they will exercise RTM, if Team 1 agrees, then Team 2 will have the chance to increase their bid. If Team 2 raises their bid to Rs. 9 Cr, then Team 1 can use the RTM and acquire Player X for Rs. 9 Cr. If Team 2 chooses not to raise the bid and keeps it at Rs. 6 Cr, Team 1 can use the RTM and get Player X for Rs. 6 Cr."

The franchises argue that the essence of the RTM is to establish a player's market value, and this purpose is not served when a franchise is required to match an arbitrarily raised bid. As clarified by the BCCI, the increase can be any amount, which diminishes the value of the incremental bid at that stage. Cricbuzz can confirm that some franchises have formally written to the BCCI, while others have engaged in discussions with its officials.

It is also being pointed out that the new rule can be counterproductive to the BCCI's main goal of attracting as many star players as possible to the auction. By setting INR 18 crore and INR 14 crore for players ranked No. 4 and No. 5 retentions, the BCCI appears to be discouraging franchises from pursuing retention. Critics argue that this new RTM clause does not exactly align with that idea and the franchises may now opt for more retentions instead of going for the RTM option.

Former Sunrisers Hyderabad head coach Tom Moody has welcomed the BCCI’s decision to re-introduce the uncapped player rule during a program on a sports media outlet:

“I think it’s a great rule. I think it allows, if you are good enough and you have got longevity, it allows a player to continue to play on the big stage and perform and have some sort of role; without them, I suppose, you are making it difficult, from a price perspective, to retain those players because they might be the identity, or in Dhoni’s case, certainly he is the identity of CSK. So, I don’t think that’s an issue at all. I think the longer the likes of iconic players like Dhoni can play in the IPL and can physically deliver like he has been, it’s good for the tournament.”

“I personally think five years is a long time; I would like to see it as a three-year window. Once a player has played his last international game, I think if you are out of international cricket or you haven’t been considered to play for India over that three-year window, you should be given the right of passage to be able to come in at that four-crow level.”

Mumbai Indians, today, announced the appointment of Mahela Jayawardene as the Head Coach of Mumbai Indians, a position he previously held from 2017 to 2022

Mr. Akash Ambani, Mumbai Indians
said, “We are thrilled to have Mahela back as the Head Coach of Mumbai Indians. With our global teams having found their footing within their ecosystems, the opportunity to bring him back to MI arose. His leadership, knowledge, and passion for the game have always benefited MI. I would also like to take this opportunity to thank Mark Boucher for his contribution over the last two seasons. His expertise and dedication were pivotal during his time, and has now become an integral member of the MI family.”

Mr. Mahela Jayawardene, Head Coach, Mumbai Indians, said, “My journey within the MI family has always been one of evolution. In 2017, the focus was on bringing together a talented group of individuals to play the best cricket ever and we did very well. Now to return, at the same moment in history, where we look ahead at the future and the opportunity to further strengthen the love of MI, build on the vision of the owners, and continue to add to the history of Mumbai Indians, is an exciting challenge I am looking forward to.”

In 2022, Mahela became the Global Head of Cricket, overseeing the expansion of the expansion of MI's global teams across different leagues, working with the coaching staff and delivering a trophy each - with MI (WPL), MI NY (MLC) and MIE (ILT20). With each of these teams having a set coaching staff, who also coach multiple teams in the MI family mirroring the ethos, style of play and decision-making that elevate the cricket played by the MI OneFamily, Mahela’s role has now again evolved within the MI ecosystem.

Singapore Considered as Possible Host for IPL 2025 Mega Auction: Report

A major update regarding the highly-anticipated IPL 2025 Mega Auction has been received, as reports state Singapore to be the choice of destination for the grand occasion to take place.

The mega auction for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will be held at the end of November or early December, BCCI sources informed us on Wednesday. The rules and regulations for the same will be released by the Board for Cricket Council of India (BCCI) in a couple of days, they said.

The Indian Premier League has held two large auctions in the past ten years, with four-year intervals in between. The first major auction was held in 2014, then in 2018–when the Rajasthan Royals and Chennai Super Kings made their comeback after a two-year suspension.

Regarding developments related to the mega auction, sources close to BCCI confirmed to IANS that the auction is likely to be scheduled in November end or early December. “IPL 2025 auction will take place in November end or early December this year. Rules of it will be out in a couple of days,” BCCI sources told IANS.

It has also been reported, as per Cricbuzz, that the BCCI is considering Singapore as a potential location for the IPL auction.

It is also been believed that a city in Saudi Arabia is also under consideration, as the BCCI and IPL officials are believed to be currently weighing their options.

Like the 2022 auction in February and the 2023 and 2024 auctions in December, the upcoming IPL mega sale is most likely going to be a two-day affair.

The auction purse for IPL 2025 is set at INR 120 crore, with the total salary cap rising to INR 146 crore. Notably, a match fee of INR 7.5 lakhs per player has been introduced, marking a first in IPL history.

In the last mega auction held in 2022, the IPL teams were permitted to retain up to four players. With the end of the three-year cycle approaching, there are differing opinions among franchises about the optimal number of retained players.

Now, It is left to the discretion of the franchise to choose their combination for Retentions and Right to Match, picking either Indian or foreign players, However, the six retentions/RTMs can have a maximum of five capped players (Indian & Overseas) and a maximum of 2 uncapped players.

Overseas players must register for the auction, with penalties for those who withdraw post-selection.

Additionally, Indian-capped players can be classified as uncapped if they haven’t played international cricket in the past five years. The Impact Player rule will continue for the upcoming cycle.

SRH to Retain Heinrich Klaasen, Pat Cummins and Abhishek Sharma for Combined INR 55 Crore; 2 More Lined Up - Report

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) will reportedly retain Heinrich Klaasen, Pat Cummins and Abhishek Sharma ahead of the 2025 Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auctions.

According to ESPNcricinfo, South African Heinrich Klaasen will be SRH’s top retention and will get INR 23 crore. Australian Pat Cummins, who was the captain in IPL 2024, will be retained at INR 18 crore, with Indian youngster Abhishek Sharma will get INR 14 crore.

The report also adds that SRH are also looking to retain the services of Travis Head and Nitish Kumar Reddy.

October 31 is the deadline for retentions ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction, which will be held later this year.

The IPL Governing Council has allowed each franchise to retain as many as six players, either through retention or the Right to Match (RTM) option.

It is left to the discretion of the franchise to choose their combination for Retentions and Right to Match, picking either Indian or foreign players, However, the six retentions/RTMs can have a maximum of five capped players (Indian & Overseas) and a maximum of 2 uncapped players.

Dale Steyn parts ways with Sunrisers Hyderabad ahead of IPL 2025

Former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn has parted ways with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) ahead of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, bringing an end to his stint as the franchise's bowling coach.

Steyn was brought in as the bowling coach before the 2022 season. He decided to pull out of the IPL 2024 season due to personal reasons and former New Zealand pacer James Franklin came in as his replacement.

Reports: James Hopes set to become fast-bowling coach of Punjab Kings

According to a fresh development, it is highly likely that the Punjab Kings will retain the bulk of their backend staff post the arrival of new head coach, Ricky Ponting. The erstwhile Australian maestro recently resigned as the head coach of the Delhi Capitals after spending seven long seasons with them, and was appointed as the Kings' head coach on September 18, 2024.

According to reports, fielding coach Brad Haddin and spin-bowling coach Sunil Joshi have been retained from the previous regimen during which Trevor Bayliss was the franchise's head coach and Sanjay Bangar the Head of Cricket Development. It is also being surmised that James Hopes, whose services Ponting availed while with the Capitals, will be roped in by the Kings as their fast-bowling

Riyadh frontrunner to host the IPL mega auction

The Indian Premier League (IPL) mega auction is expected to take place on November 24 and 25 in Saudi Arabia, though there is no official confirmation from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) about the same. The board is currently exploring these options and is expected to announce the schedule in a few days.

A potential issue before the BCCI authorities is that the proposed dates coincide with India's first Test match in Australia, scheduled to be held in Perth from November 22 to 26. The match will be shown on Disney Star, which is one of the official broadcasters of the IPL too. Ideally, all parties want to avoid any overlap.

Owing to the time difference with Australia, there is unlikely to be any clash between the match and the auction proceedings, as the auction could begin in the afternoon, Indian Standard Time.

It is understood that a few BCCI officials have already visited Saudi Arabia, with another batch expected to depart for the Gulf kingdom on Monday. The BCCI have narrowed down the potential venues to Riyadh and Jeddah, with Riyadh, the capital city, being the most likely host city for the event.

The BCCI had explored a few other places, like Dubai, Singapore and London. At one stage, there was even talk of Vienna but Saudi Arabia is believed to have been zeroed in and the BCCI have also identified a place that can be venue for the two-day mega auction.

Given the choice, the franchises would prefer the auction to be held in India. However, with an Indian city no longer an option, the teams are urging the BCCI to announce the venue as soon as possible so they can make travel arrangements for the delegation members who will participate in the auction. Before that, the franchises must submit their respective player retention lists, with the deadline set for 5 PM on October 31.

KL Rahul To Be Released By Lucknow Super Giants, Courtesy Of Zaheer Khan's Explosive Report

As the trends indicated, KL Rahul is set to be released by the Lucknow Super Giants ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction. After the IPL Governing Council confirmed the retention rules, franchises have been contemplating the best combination of retention, Right-To-Match and fresh purchase at the auction. There's been suspense over Rahul's future with the Super Giants, considering the form he displayed last year, coupled with his exile from Team India's T20I side. It has now been reported that Rahul didn't get the vote of confidence from LSG bosses before the retention deadline.

According to a report in the Times of India, LSG mentor Zaheer Khan and coach Justin Langer did an analysis of Rahul's role in the franchise's losses last season. After a thorough digging of numbers, it was found out that the chances of the team's loss increased with the number of balls Rahul played in the middle.

"The LSG management, including mentor Zaheer Khan and coach Justin Langer, has analysed his stats and it has emerged that the team has almost lost all matches where KL has batted long and scored runs. That indicates that his strike rate doesn't match the momentum of the game. With the Impact Player rule, the scores are getting higher. You can't afford to have someone taking so much time at the top of the order," IPL source told the paper.

The report also claims that express pacer Mayank Yadav is a sure-shot retention at LSG. In fact, he is likely to be one of the top 3 players to be retained by the franchise.

"Mayank is LSG's find. They invested in him when no one knew of him and he has shown what kind of impact he can have on a match," the report further said.

It has also been reported that uncapped players like Ayush Badoni and Mohsin Khan are likely to be retained by the franchise.

LSG are also said to be interested in buying Rishabh Pant for the captaincy role, should the Delhi Capitals decide to release him.

IPL 2025 Auction: Moody Picks Cummins, Head, Abhishek, Klaasen As SRH's Retentions

Former Australia cricketer Tom Moody picked Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Pat Cummins, openers Abhishek Sharma and Travis Head, and Heinrich Klaasen as front-runners to be retained by the franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Moody, who has coached SRH in two different stints between 2013 to 2022, backed the core players of the franchise to be retained after finishing as runners-up of the 2024 season.

Head, Abhishek and Klaasen were the top run-getters for the side in the memorable season and played a key role in their campaign to the final. Head scored 567 runs including a century and four fifties while Abhishek hammered 484 runs with the help of three half-centuries. Klaasen accumulated 479 runs in the season including four half-centuries.

“When I look at SRH, they’ve got one of the tougher jobs among franchises during this retention period. At the top, I’d look to secure captain Pat Cummins, followed by Travis Head and then Abhishek Sharma,” Moody told Star Sports.

The Australian further added that all-rounders Nitish Reddy (the fourth-highest run-getter for the franchise in 2024) and Abdul Samad, who scored 182 runs in the last season at a strike rate of 168.51, should also be considered for retention.

“I’d extend it even further, which would be costly, but I think it’s worth it to retain a player of Heinrich Klaasen’s calibre. Then there’s Nitish Reddy, who has recently been capped, and I believe they must secure him before he enters the auction. Among uncapped players, I’d definitely consider Abdul Samad, who is a rare talent. He’s a powerful hitter who can come into the middle order and change the game,” he added.

The Indian Premier League (IPL) franchises can retain a total of six players from their existing squad. This can be either via retention or by using the Right to Match (RTM) option. The six retentions/RTMs can have a maximum of five capped players (Indian & Overseas) and a maximum of two uncapped players.

The auction purse for the franchises has been set at Rs 120 crore for IPL 2025. The last date for the franchises to finalise their retention list is October 31.

MS Dhoni's IPL Decision Confirmed As CSK Make Surprise No. 1 Retention Choice: Report

The legendary MS Dhoni all but confirmed his intention to continue playing cricket in the Indian Premier League (IPL), as he dropped a subtle hint over his participation in the T20 league. When Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were approached for a reaction, the franchise's CEO Kasi Viswanathan also said that they are happy to see Dhoni being ready for another season of the IPL. What follows next is a call from Dhoni to the franchise owner N Srinivasan to finalise the retention list ahead of the IPL 2025 season.

However, what has also been reported that skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad isn't the No. 1 retention choice for CSK, but rather all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja, who quit T20 internationals after India's T20 World Cup triumph this year.

"When he is ready, what else (do) we want. We are happy," franchise CEO Kasi Viswanathan told Cricbuzz on Saturday.

During an event, Dhoni had said that he wants to enjoy the last few years of cricket that he has left in him.

"I just want to enjoy whatever last few years of cricket I am able to play," Dhoni was quoted as saying. "When you play cricket like a professional sport, it becomes difficult to enjoy it just like a game. That's what I want to do. It's not easy.

"The emotions keep coming, the commitments are there. I want to enjoy the game for the next few years. I have to keep myself fit for nine months, so that I can play two and a half months of IPL. You need to plan it out, but at the same time chill a bit."

As far as CSK's retention list goes, Ravindra Jadeja is followed by skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad at No. 2 spot while pacer Matheesha Pathirana has agreed to be the No. 3 choice retention. Two players among Shivam Dube, Devon Conway and Samir Rizvi are likely to be retained by the franchise as well.

KL Rahul Released By LSG, These 5 Players Retained Ahead Of IPL 2025 Auction: Report

Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) are gearing up for the 2025 Indian Premier League season by retaining their core squad, who were pivotal to their recent successes. Nicholas Pooran, Mayank Yadav, and Ravi Bishnoi are the three players set to be retained by the franchise. The source privy to the development also confirmed to IANS that Pooran will be the front-runner to lead the side in the IPL 2025. Pooran, an explosive batsman and versatile wicketkeeper, emerged as the star for LSG.

The franchise is ready to show their trust in Pooran. He captained last year too and carries a vast experience of leading his national side too. So we will be continuing with his skills. Apart from him, we are going with spearhead pacer Mayank Yadav and Ravi Bishnoi," a source close to the franchise told IANS.

Signed for Rs 16 crore in 2023, Pooran quickly became one of the highest-paid players in the league, showcasing his power-hitting ability and leadership skills during Rahul's absence last season.

Pooran, 29, has enjoyed a steep rise since his IPL debut, where his price tag jumped from Rs 30 lakh with Mumbai Indians in 2017 to over Rs 16 crore with LSG, after a competitive bidding process against his former franchise, Sunrisers Hyderabad.

Meanwhile, Mayank Yadav, a fast-bowling sensation, has caught the selectors' attention with his 150 km/h deliveries and explosive performances in his debut season. Despite an injury that limited him to only four matches in IPL 2024, his rapid ascent led to a national call-up and inclusion at the BCCI's Centre of Excellence. Mayank's journey began when LSG picked him for a modest Rs 20 lakh, yet his impact has already set him apart in India's pace lineup.

LSG's core bowling lineup is further strengthened with Ravi Bishnoi, the talented leg-spinner, who was retained in the 2022 mega auction as an uncapped player. Over the seasons, Bishnoi has evolved into a match-winner for LSG, known for his reliable economy and wicket-taking ability, helping LSG reach the playoffs in 2022 and 2023. Despite a slightly quieter 2024 season, Bishnoi remains an integral part of LSG's bowling attack.

Apart from these three players, the other two likely retentions are Mohsin Khan--the tall young left-arm pacer and middle-order explosive batter Ayush Badoni.

As previously reported by IANS, LSG captain KL Rahul is likely to enter the mega auction instead of being retained by the franchise.

No KL Rahul! LSG Set To Retain Pooran, Mayank, Bishnoi & 2 Uncapped Players - Report

Lucknow Super Giants is all set to retain West Indies wicketkeeper-batter Nicholas Pooran, along with Indian pace sensation Mayank Yadav and former world No. 1 T20I bowler Ravi Bishnoi, ahead of IPL 2025 mega auctions. According to a report in ESPNCricinfo on Monday (October 28), in addition to Pooran, Mayank, and Bishnoi, the Lucknow-based franchise will also continue its association with uncapped Indian players Ayush Badoni and Mohsin Khan, but KL Rahul, who joined LSG for Rs 17 crore ahead of IPL 2022 mega auctions and led them in the last three seasons, is unlikely to be retained barring any last-minute change of mind from both parties.

Pooran joined LSG for Rs 16 crore in the IPL 2023 auction and is set to the top retention, followed by Mayank and Bishnoi. Mayank made his IPL debut in 2024 and made headlines for bowling in excess of 150 kmph. He was, however, only able to play four matches in the season due to injury-related issues.

The 22-year-old Delhi-based pacer recently got a chance to become an India player as well. He played his maiden T20I for Men in Blue in Gwalior on October 6, 2024, against Bangladesh and picked up one wicket. Overall in three T20Is, Mayank has four wickets to his name.

Former West Indies T20I captain Pooran, who has also played for Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, and Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL, has been in red-hot form in 2024. He scored 499 runs in IPL 2024 for LSG and also served as the team’s captain in the absence of Rahul. The left-handed batter holds the world record for scoring most T20 runs in a calendar year, along with smashing the highest sixes.

RCB Make Bold Virat Kohli Captaincy Decision After Talks With Shubman Gill Fail: Report

A major development has emerged from the Indian Premier League (IPL), with Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) set to re-appoint Virat Kohli as the franchise's captain. Kohli, who captained the Bengaluru side from 2013 to 2021, decided to give up the responsibility after the season 14th edition of the T20 league. RCB were led by South African cricketer Faf du Plessis from 2022 to 2024. But, ahead of the mega auction, a big change is being brought in, with Kohli set to take the leadership role again.

Virat is no longer a captain at the international circuit in any of the three formats. In fact, he quit T20 internationals after the Indian team's triumph at the 2024 T20 World Cup. According to a report in the Times of India, Kohli is set to lead his IPL side again.

Kohli had informed fans of his decision to quit RCB captaincy before the conclusion of the 2021 season. Many believed that the decision came as a result of the franchise's inability to win an IPL title under his leadership. However, even after Kohli quit, the team's challenges remained the same.

In 2021, while announcing his decision to quit RCB captaincy, Kohli had said: "I will continue to be an RCB player till I play my last game in the IPL. But it's been a great journey of nine years of joy, frustration, moments of happiness and sadness, and I just want to thank all of you from the bottom of my heart for supporting me and believing in me relentlessly and unconditionally.

"And I will continue to be committed to play for this franchise as I said till the last day of me playing IPL... for you guys, for the fans, because of what you've done for me and how you've made me feel over the last so many years that is going to stay with me for the rest of my life," Kohli had said three years ago."

Kohli's return as RCB captain also all but confirms that Faf du Plessis would not be retained by the franchise. It has also been reported that the Royal Challengers were after Shubman Gill for the role but he decided to remain put with the Gujarat Titans.

According to a report from TOI, Shubman Gill has taken a pay cut to stay at Gujarat Titans. Gill was focussed on building the squad for the future & didn't want the franchise to burn a lot in their purse so he decided to take a pay cut ahead of Mega Auction.

Buttler not retained by Royals for 2025 IPL

England white-ball captain Jos Buttler has not been retained by Rajasthan Royals for the 2025 Indian Premier League season.

Buttler, 34, has been with Rajasthan since 2018 but they have opted not to keep him before the Mega Auction.

Teams are allowed to retain up to six players from 2024, including five international capped players.

No England players have been retained, meaning the likes of Phil Salt, Sam Curran - who commanded a then-IPL record £1.85m in 2023 - Liam Livingstone, Jonny Bairstow and Jofra Archer could be available in the auction.

Australia seamer Mitchell Starc, who became the IPL's most expensive player in the 2024 season when Kolkata Knight Riders paid 24.75 crore Indian rupees (£2.3m) for his services, has also not been retained.

The highest retention price is for South Africa wicketkeeper Heinrich Klaasen, who has been retained by Sunrisers Hyderabad for 23 crore Indian rupees (£2.1m).

Klaasen is just one of 11 overseas players retained, with others including Australia captain Pat Cummins and batter Travis Head (both Sunrisers Hyderabad), Afghanistan leg-spinner Rashid Khan (Gujarat Titans) and West Indies' Nicholas Pooran (Lucknow Super Giants) and Andre Russell (Kolkta Knight Riders).

Indian superstars Jasprit Bumrah and Rohit Sharma (both Mumbai Indians), Virat Kohli (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) and Ravindra Jadeja (Chennai Super Kings) are among those to be kept.

Some of India's key players will enter the draft though, with KL Rahul (Lucknow Super Giants), Rishabh Pant (Delhi Capitals), Ravichandran Ashwin (Rajasthan Royals) and Mohammed Siraj (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) among those released.

Among the overseas players not to be retained are Australia's Glenn Maxwell and Cameron Green (Royal Challengers Bengaluru) and South Africa's Anrich Nortje (Delhi Capitals), David Miller (Gujarat Titans) and Quinton de Kock (Lucknow Super Giants).

MS Dhoni, 43, will play for Chennai Super Kings again after being signed as an uncapped player. A rule change means anyone who has not played international cricket for five years becomes uncapped.

Sides who have not utilised their six retentions are given Right-to-Match cards to use at the Mega Auction, which means some players could still be retained.

However, Buttler and Starc will not return to Royals or Knight Riders because they have kept six players.

Players will have to decide whether to enter the auction around their international commitments, because the IPL has introduced a two-year ban on players who pull out of the tournament without certain requirements being met.

The dates for the auction are yet to be confirmed, but it is expected to take place over two days in late November.

The schedule for the tournament itself is also unknown, but usually takes place in April and May.

"Not Just Skills": Rahul Dravid Breaks Silence On Rajasthan Royals IPL Retentions Amid Jos Buttler Release

Rajasthan Royals have announced that they have retained- Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Shimron Hetmyer and Sandeep Sharma ahead of the Indian Premier League 2025 Auction. Sanju Samson, who has led the team for the past four seasons will continue to do so, along with renewals for breakout top-order batter Yashasvi Jaiswal, mercurial all-rounder Riyan Parag, phlegmatic wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel, destructive finisher Shimron Hetmyer and crafty medium pacer Sandeep Sharma.

Samson, who is set to embark on his 11th season, has been retained at a value of Rs 18 crores. During the past four seasons under his captaincy, the team has made the playoffs twice, including a Runners Up finish in IPL 2022. He has also consistently stepped up with the bat since taking over as skipper in 2021, scoring 1835 runs in 60 innings at a strike rate of 147.59, and finishing within the top-3 run-getters for the franchise in each of the four seasons.

"The last few seasons have truly been remarkable for our franchise. We have been able to deliver some special moments for our fans and were able to create an environment in the dressing room where some of our young talent has been groomed to be the next generation of superstars for Indian cricket," said Sanju Samson.

"I look back fondly to special memories created, some special friendships and relationships which will last a lifetime and transcend beyond the game into life and remain in our hearts forever. Ideally I would do anything to continue this journey with exactly the same team as we had in this last cycle but, unfortunately, the rules will not permit this. Hence, with great sadness in my heart we will have to part ways with some of them who have brought incredible success to the franchise and great joy to our fans. Naturally the fans and all of us continue to hope we are able to buy some, if not all, of them back at the auction," the Royals skipper continued.

"I am incredibly fortunate to be able to continue this incredible journey for both myself and the franchise under the esteemed leadership of Rahul Dravid and ably supported by Kumar Sangakkara. It gives me immense pride and I accept this responsibility with the utmost humility to keep leading this franchise and team into what we all want to make into the best phase in the franchise's history," added Samson.

Yashasvi Jaiswal, who has risen from the ranks in the past couple of years through the Royals' development pathway, has also transformed into a key member of the Indian men's national team. The 22-year-old left-hander has also been retained at a value of Rs 18 crore. In the last three-year cycle, the stylish opening batter has amassed 1318 runs at an impressive strike rate of 150.83, including the second-best tally ever for a Royals player in a single season (625 runs in IPL 2023).

Riyan Parag, who had a stellar IPL 2024 season for the Royals before making his white-ball debut for India earlier this year, has been retained at a value of Rs 14 crores. The hard-hitting allrounder has represented the Royals across six seasons, appearing in 70 IPL matches so far in his young career. The 22-year-old was last picked up in the IPL 2022 Auction by the Royals for Rs 3.8 crores, and has since undergone a period of determined transformation to become one of the hottest prospects in Indian cricket.

Young Indian wicketkeeper-batter Dhruv Jurel is retained for the Royals at a value of Rs 14 crores. The 23-year-old, who made a breakthrough in IPL 2023 with his dynamic yet measured performances down the order, striking at an impressive 172.72, has since become a promising fixture in India's red-ball squad. For Rajasthan Royals, Jurel concluded IPL 2024 with 195 runs from 11 innings, and his retention underscores the Royals' commitment to nurturing a talented core of Indian players, developed within their system, in whom they are placing their faith to drive future success.

Shimron Hetmyer becomes the only overseas player to have been retained by the franchise at a value of Rs 11 crores. The destructive finisher has become a mainstay in the Royals middle-order with multiple match-winning innings during the last cycle from 2022 to 2024. The 27-year-old Guyanese has maintained an impressive strike rate of 156.48 across the three seasons, and will prove to be a value-add to the Royals line-up going into the next cycle with his experience.

Sandeep Sharma, who was introduced as a replacement player in IPL 2023 by the Royals, has been retained as the only uncapped player by the franchise at a value of Rs 4 crores. The experienced medium pacer had transitioned into a reliable frontline and death option for the franchise, with exceptional performances across the two seasons, picking up 23 wickets at an economy of 8.39, and particularly being effective with both the new ball and at the death.

Rahul Dravid, Head Coach, Rajasthan Royals reacted on the retentions, "The franchise have been really successful and consistent over the last three years, with so many players delivering through the course of the last cycle. As we go into this new cycle, we have gone with this core of players who we believe bring something unique to this team, all being in different but exciting stages of their careers. Sanju, in particular, has been a real anchor for us-not only with his consistency on the field but also in how he leads by example, inspiring everyone around him. It has been incredibly rewarding to see this core of young Indian players grow - Yashasvi, Riyan and Dhruv - all of them having immense talent and drive. With their experience, both Sandeep and Shimron have displayed calmness under pressure, and have brought their game-changing abilities to the fold."

"For us, retaining this group isn't just about their skills, it's about extending the trust, giving ourselves a sense of stability, and putting ourselves in the best position going into the all important IPL Auction. It's certainly an exciting time for the franchise and for these players," Dravid added.

Thanking the released players for their contributions to the Royals, Dravid said, "When you have this period of changes, you have to make tough decisions, because you can't keep all the players. You have to accept that and you have to do it with a heavy heart. All these players have built so many relationships with each other and with the support staff over the past few years, so it's definitely very difficult, but I would like to thank every single member for their contributions and wish them the very best for the future in the hope that we will see some of them back at the franchise again!"

LSG Owner’s Remark After Rahul’s Release: 'Players Who Put Team Before Personal Goals...'

KL Rahul has parted ways with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) after leading it for two years since its inception in the Indian Premier League (IPL) in 2022. The franchise on Thursday revealed its retention, skipping Rahul and keeping six players, namely Nicholas Pooran, Ravi Bishnoi, Mohsin Khan, Ayush Badoni and Mayank Yadav.

Speaking with Star Sports after the retentions were announced, LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka said the easiest retention for the franchise was Nicholas Pooran.

“We retained our first retention, which was an automatic choice, and it happened within like when the think tank deliberated, it happened within like less than two minutes and that was Nicholas Pooran," Goenka said in a video shared by Star Sports on X.

“We’ve had two other capped retentions and that is Ravi Bishnoi and Mayank Yadav. In addition to that, we have two uncapped retentions, that’s Mohsin Khan and Ayush Badoni," he added.

The LSG owner highlighted that the team management stuck to the formula of choosing the players who keep the team ahead of their milestones and have a desire to win.

Stokes to skip IPL but Anderson & Archer enter auction

Captain Ben Stokes has opted to skip next year's Indian Premier League but former England bowler James Anderson has registered for the upcoming auction.

Stokes' name is not among the 52 Englishman who have signed up for the auction, which will be held on 24 and 25 November.

It means the 33-year-old will also be unavailable for the 2026 competition under new rules announced by the IPL last month.

But England's leading wicket-taker Anderson, 42, who retired from international duty in July, has put his name forward, as has pace bowler Jofra Archer.

Anderson has not played since his final Test against West Indies at Lord's and has not played a T20 since 2014.

He has never played in a global T20 franchise league.

Archer's decision is interesting, given hopes he could return to Test cricket next summer.

Named the IPL's most valuable player in 2020, the 29-year-old has made his comeback from a series of back and elbow injuries this year in white-ball cricket, but it is still hoped he could feature against India next summer and in the 2025-26 Ashes in Australia.

The 2025 IPL will also clash with the early rounds of the County Championship, potentially preventing Archer from proving his fitness in the longer format.

The IPL brought in a new rule this year that meant overseas players signed by franchises who later pull out will be banned from the competition for two years.

The dates for the 2025 IPL have not been confirmed, but this year it ran from 22 March to 26 May.

After the Champions Trophy concludes in early March, England do not play again until a four-day Test against Zimbabwe on 22 May.

First Player From Italy To Register For IPL 2025 Auction Already On MI's Radar

The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 mega auction will see a whopping 1,574 players go under the hammer. Players from 16 different overseas countries have registered, bringing the total number of overseas players to 409. However, while the likes of Jos Buttler and Mitchell Starc will be talked about, another overseas player has also caught eyeballs. 24-year-old fast bowler Thomas Jack Draca has become the first-ever player from Italy to register for the IPL auction. Draca has kept his base price at Rs 30 lakh for the mega auction.

Draca has progressed leaps and bounds in 2024, growing in prominence as one of the best players from an associate nation. He broke through in the Global T20 Canada 2024 league, where he scalped 11 wickets in just six games for Brampton Wolves. His economy of 6.88 stood out as well.

Draca made his debut for Italy in June 2024, and has picked up eight wickets in his four T20Is for Italy.

Draca has dismissed some massive international names during the Global T20 Canada league. His scalps include the likes of Sunil Narine, David Wiese, Kyle Mayers and Iftikhar Ahmed among others during the tournament.

Draca appears to be the epitome of a modern T20 bowler. In Canada, Draca achieved tremendous succeess with the short ball. However, he also seems to have deceptive variation and swing, which outfoxed the likes of Mayers and Narine.

Draca's impressive performances have already caught the eyeballs of IPL owners. MI Emirates, a subsidiary franchise of Mumbai Indians, have roped in Draca for the next season of ILT20 in the UAE, possibly hinting that he could be an option for the five-time IPL champions in the 2025 mega auction.

Draca has registered himself as an all-rounder in the IPL 2025 mega auction. Although he hasn't made his name as a batter yet, perhaps there's more to see.

BCCI beware: Uday Shankar says Star-Viacom won't have FOMO for cricket rights

Something that brewed in the Indian sports and entertainment broadcast industry earlier this week could have massive ramifications for how world cricket is run. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), the undisputed Big Dog of cricket, has long harnessed the nation’s unmatched passion for the sport. As the world’s richest cricket board, it has consistently dictated the market value of broadcast rights, with broadcasters clamouring to showcase some of the most bankable athletes on the planet.

But now, it seems there’s another Big Dog on the auction table. The USD 8.5 billion merger between Disney’s Star India and Reliance’s Viacom18 on November 14, 2024, has created a broadcasting juggernaut, poised to shake up the balance of power in Indian sports and entertainment.

One of BCCI’s primary revenue streams is the sale of broadcast rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) and international and domestic matches hosted by the board. Even the International Cricket Council (ICC) depends heavily on revenue from media rights, especially in the Indian subcontinent region. India’s participation in major ICC events is a crucial driver. Consider the IPL media rights sale in 2022, for instance. The 2023–2027 media rights cycle saw a staggering 196 percent increase in value, soaring from Rs 16,347.5 crore (2018–2022) to Rs 48,390.5 crore. This dramatic surge was fuelled by intense competition between Viacom18 and Star India during the bidding process.

Will we witness a similar spike, given the IPL’s ever-growing popularity? Uday Shankar, Vice Chairperson of the joint venture, discussed the merger's potential impact on cricket revenues in an interview with India Today. While emphasising cricket's continued importance as a market driver, Shankar expressed caution about the sustainability of these bidding wars in the future.

With a more extensive portfolio, the merged company can adopt a strategic approach to avoid overextending itself in the bidding process. Regarding the future of cricket rights, Shankar shared a measured perspective.

“Sports bodies globally have benefited and feasted on the deep, passionate loyalty of sports fans. They’ve capitalised on the fear of missing out (FOMO) that media companies face. We no longer suffer from FOMO. If we don’t bid for the next cycle of ICC rights, we can comfortably sit it out, and it won’t make a dent in our business.”

Imagine the implications if Hotstar and JioCinema, with their combined subscriber base of over 50 million, decided to sit out of the auction. Sony and Zee, other major players, have also vied for a share of cricket in the past. Additionally, new entrants, including non-traditional media houses and tech giants, are entering the picture. For example, Amazon Prime secured broadcasting rights for cricket in New Zealand, while Facebook and Netflix have tested the waters with sports broadcasts.

Netflix recently ventured into sports broadcasting, acquiring the rights to the much-anticipated boxing match between legend Mike Tyson and YouTuber-turned-boxer Jake Paul.

However, if key players opt to sit out and watch from the sidelines, cricket broadcast revenue growth could stagnate, which is a worrying prospect for the sport's administrators.

“The breadth and depth of creative assets—across drama, movies, reality shows, Indian cricket, and international cricket—give us significant flexibility to move wisely,” Shankar said. “We don’t have to be desperate to bid for and win every single right.”

The 18th season of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 will begin on March 23, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) Vice President Rajeev Shukla confirmed on Sunday. All 10 franchises have already picked the squad of their liking during the mega auction, which was held in Jeddah on November 24 and 25. After the end of the auction, there were speculations about the possible date when the cash-rich league would commence. Rajeev Shukla, who attended the Special General Meeting (SGM) in Mumbai, revealed the date of IPL 2025 while speaking to reporters and said, "IPL is going to start from March 23."

Last season, the IPL 2024 kickstarted on March 22 when the Royal Challengers Bengaluru took on Chennai Super Kings and the finale was held on May 26 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai.

Kolkata Knight Riders, who emphatically won the 2024 season, are the defending champions this year.

While interacting with the reporters, Shukla also confirmed that the venues for the WPL have been finalised and will be declared soon.

As per reports:

BCCI has issued strict guidelines to state associations regarding the usage of their grounds ahead of the IPL season. The board has explicitly instructed state associations not to permit IPL franchises to use these venues.

BCCI aims to keep IPL venues in top condition, ensuring the outfields remain in optimal shape. As part of this directive, state associations have also been asked to prohibit the use of these grounds for private celebrity events, including Legends League matches.

Reliance-Disney to stop completely free IPL cricket streaming in India, sources say

The Reliance-Disney joint venture will no longer offer completely free streaming for IPL cricket matches and will adopt a hybrid model where subscription kicks in after content consumption reaches a threshold, three sources told Reuters on Thursday.

The entity will also launch a new rebranded streaming app, with plans starting at 149 rupees, said the first source.

The decision to change the terms of streaming the Indian Premier League (IPL), the world's richest cricket league, comes after Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani's Reliance and Walt Disney combined their India media assets in an $8.5 billion merger last year.

JioCinema has allowed free IPL streaming since securing the rights for the popular tournament for five years, beginning in 2023 for $3 billion.

Now, all streaming content, including IPL, will shift to a hybrid model where free viewing will be offered for a while, and then users will need to take subscriptions depending on their consumption patterns, said two of the sources with direct knowledge.

"Once a user develops affinity to the platform, start watching free, becomes loyal ... the subscription will kick in then," said the first source, adding that each user's subscription could start at a different point of time.

The sources declined to be named as the plans are confidential.

Reliance, which controls the joint venture, did not respond to requests for comment.

The joint venture entity's streaming offering will be available on a new rebranded app, which will offer a basic plan starting 149 rupees ($1.72) and an ad-free version for 499 rupees ($5.75) for three months, said the first source.

The Reliance-Disney venture runs more than 100 TV channels and streaming apps in India's $28-billion media and entertainment market, where it also competes with Netflix and Amazon Prime, among others.

JioCinema had the rights to IPL cricket, a money-spinner and among the most-streamed content, as well as to the Winter Olympics and Indian Super League football. Disney's Hotstar app had the rights to the International Cricket Council's tournaments in India and English Premier League soccer.

Key decisions at the entity are being taken by Vice Chairman Uday Shankar, a media industry veteran who in his previous roles was instrumental in the rise of Disney's Hotstar streaming app.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) will take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at the Eden Gardens to kick off the IPL 2025 season on March 22, according to a Cricbuzz report. The season will continue the tradition of the defending champions hosting the first match of the fresh season.

The report said the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is yet to reveal the full schedule for the tournament but has provided the 10 franchises with some ‘key dates’. These include the date for the final — which will also be held at the Eden Gardens on Sunday, May 25.

Eden Gardens to host IPL 2025 final on May 25

Eden Gardens, the home ground of IPL 2024 champions Kolkata Knight Riders, will host both the tournament opener of IPL 2025 on March 22 and the final on May 25. It will also host Qualifier 2 on May 23.

This will be the first final in Kolkata in a decade, with Eden Gardens having previously hosted the 2013 and 2015 title matches.

The other two playoffs - Qualifier 1 on May 20 and the Eliminator on May 21 - will be played in Hyderabad, home of 2024 runners-up Sunrisers Hyderabad.

IPL 2025 will feature 74 matches spread over 65 days with 12 double-headers. The tournament opener will pit KKR against Royal Challengers Bengaluru in an evening match. That will be followed by double-header Sunday (March 23) with SRH hosting Rajasthan Royals followed by the IPL's most celebrated rivalry, with Chennai Super Kings hosting Mumbai Indians in a clash between two five-times champions.

Royals, Delhi Capitals, Lucknow Super Giants and Gujarat Titans will play three afternoon matches each, while the other seven teams will play two day matches each. Last year's afternoon matches had started at 3.30 pm IST.

There are 13 venues listed in the schedule: the primary home bases of each of the 10 teams along with with Guwahati (Royals' second home venue), Visakhapatnam (Capitals' second home venue) and Dharamsala (Punjab's second home venue). While Guwahati and Vizag will host two matches each, three matches will be played in Dharamsala.

While Punjab have usually played two games per season at the picturesque HPCA Stadium in Dharamsala, the IPL has scheduled an extra game at the venue this season, with Capitals, Mumbai and LSG listed as Punjab's opponents. These three matches will be played from May 4 to 11, which means Punjab are the only team to have a stretch of three back-to-back home matches. While several teams will be busy playing back-to-back matches with breaks of one or two days, no team will be on the road for three consecutive away matches.

As has been the case in every season since the IPL expanded to ten teams in 2022, the teams have been split into two groups, with KKR, RCB, Royals, CSK and Punjab in one group and SRH, Capitals, Titans, Mumbai and LSG in the other. Teams will meet the other teams in their group and one team in the other group - determined by seeding - twice, and the other four teams in the opposite group once.

CSK and Mumbai, for instance, will meet twice despite not being part of the same group.

After their March 23 contest, these two teams will meet again on April 20, again on a Sunday evening, with Mumbai hosting Super Kings at the Wankhede Stadium. Four teams - RCB, Mumbai, Punjab and LSG - will all play their opening match away, and only play their respective first home matches in April. RCB, who scripted a miraculous return to form to make the playoffs last year with six consecutive wins after winning just one of their first eight matches, will end their league season with a sustained spell of home games: four of their last six matches will be at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium.

Venkatesh Iyer, during an interview with a sports media outlet:

"Definitely. Definitely, I'm ready. Again, I've always said this: captaincy is just a tag. I believe in leadership. That is a bigger role to play, being a leader."

You don't necessarily need the tag of a captain to be a leader in your dressing room. You need to set examples. You need to be a good role model, both on and off the field, which I am doing right now in MP. I'm not the captain of the MP team, but my opinions are respected and I really love to be in an atmosphere where every individual - again, new or experienced, 20 lakhs, 20 crore, whatever - you just need to have the freedom to voice your opinion. Or you just need to have the freedom to give opinions and give suggestions and them to be taken in the right spirit. I've always wanted to be that person. And if captaincy comes my way, I would definitely want to do it. There's no ambiguity surrounded to this. I'll definitely do it, if it comes my way. There is no reason not to do it."
