BCCI announces shocking new rule days ahead of IPL 2025, informs franchise of new practice and open nets regulation

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has implemented new regulations to restrict the number of preseason practices that all IPL teams can participate in before the 2025 season. These regulations state that each team may have up to seven three-hour practice sessions and two warm-up games before the season starts, but open nets and match-day practice will not be permitted after the season starts.

Since the pitches have already undergone considerable strain following the lengthy domestic season, a Cricbuzz report claims that these regulations are being implemented to keep them in optimal shape for the event. Only a few days have passed since the board sent a letter to the IPL ground officials prohibiting their use for any league games, whether local or unofficial.

"In advance of the first match of the season and as set out in the Stadium Agreement, teams may have up to seven (7) practice sessions of up to three (3) hours in duration under floodlights, of which two (2) can be practice matches or open nets as decided by the team," the report stated BCCI said in the note to franchises.

"The practice matches to take place on one of the side wickets of the main square. If a team is playing a practice match under lights, the duration of the match should not exceed more than three and a half hours. As per the Operational Rules, practice matches require the prior written approval of the BCCI. In order to prepare the pitch for the season, no practice sessions or practice matches may be played on the main square in the four (4) days leading up to the relevant franchisee’s first home match of the season. However, 1 side wicket per team will be provided for range hitting on these days. During this period, if requested by the home franchisee, the State Association."

Furthermore, the BCCI has developed a process for settling "conflicts" when two teams wish to practice simultaneously. The initial step is a talk between the managers of the two teams. After considering both parties' requests, the BCCI will become involved if a solution cannot be found. The BCCI will allow each team one wicket for range hitting, run-ups, throwdowns, and other practice requirements, even though partially open nets will not be permitted once the season starts.

Chennai Super Kings captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, on a local media outlet:

“Just a week before the tournament last year, MS Dhoni came up to me and said, ‘I'm not leading this year—you are.' I was taken aback, asking, ‘From the first game? Are you sure?' With just a few days to prepare, it was overwhelming."

“But he assured me, ‘This is your team. You make your own decisions. I won't interfere—except when field placements are a 50-50 call. Even then, it's not a compulsion to follow my advice. That trust meant a lot to me.”

IPL Introduces Stricter New Rules: "No Sleeveless At Presentation, No Family..."

The BCCI has partially extended its recently implemented SOPs on the Indian team to the 10 IPL franchises ahead of the 2025 edition, covering players' travel by only team bus and barring the entry of families in dressing rooms even on non-match days. Following India's loss in the Test series in Australia, the BCCI came up with a set of rules that barred personal managers from travelling in the team bus besides limiting the presence of players' families on tours. The exact same SOPs can't be applied in a multi team competition like the IPL but some of them have made their way to the world's premier T20 league. "Players to use the team bus while coming for practice. Teams may travel in two batches," read a BCCI note that was shared with the team managers of all IPL sides recently.

As for as the families of players, they won't be allowed in the dressing room even on training days.

"On practice days (during pre-tournament & tournament), only accredited staff is allowed in the dressing room and on the field of play. Player family members and friends to travel in a different vehicle and can watch team practice from the hospitality area.

"For extended support staff (throw down specialist/net bowlers) list need to be submitted for approval to BCCI. Once approved, non- match day accreditations will be issued for the same," read the BCCI note further.

A top official of a franchise welcomed the steps taken by the BCCI.

"In our franchise, the families and even the team owners were not permitted in the dressing room even on non-match days. Having said that, some of the players used to travel separately and not in the team bus after a game. It won't be be allowed from this season onwards," the official told PTI.

Additionally, fines will be levied on players if they forget to bring their accreditation card at the venue or show up at the post-match presentation wearing loose and sleeveless clothes.

"It is mandatory for PMOA (players and match officials) accredited staff to bring their accreditation on match day. On the first instance failure of not carrying the accreditation, warning will be issued. On second instance, monetary fine will be issued to the team.

"...In the post-match presentation, floppies and sleeveless jersey are not allowed. Failure to do so will result in warning on the first instance. On the second instance, there will be a financial penalty," the BCCI said.

The board also warned the batters to not hit the advertising LED board outside the boundary ropes.

"Despite providing hitting nets, player keep hitting on the LED boards. We request teams to adhere to it.

KL Rahul Rejects Delhi Capitals Captaincy Offer, Says Report. New Candidate Is...

After playing a pivotal role in India's 2025 Champions Trophy triumph with his all-round skills, Axar Patel is now likely to be appointed as the new Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper for the 2025 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The all-rounder had stepped in to be DC's captain in IPL 2024 when his predecessor Rishabh Pant was not allowed to play in a crucial game against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) due to an over-rate offence.

“Yes, Axar Patel is likely to be named as Delhi Capitals skipper for IPL 2025. The franchise had asked for KL Rahul to be the team's captain, but he very much wishes to contribute for the side as a player in the upcoming tournament,” sources told IANS on Tuesday.

Axar has been with DC since 2019, and was retained for a whopping Rs 18 crore ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction. In his IPL career of 150 games, Axar has scored 1653 runs at a strike rate of 130.88 while picking 123 wickets with his left-arm spin bowling at an economy rate of 7.28.

Axar had been India's vice-captain during their 4-1 T20I series win over England at home this year, but his possible elevation as DC's captain for IPL 2025 is going to be a major test of his leadership skills, especially with the franchise still looking for their first-ever championship win.

Rahul was also a leadership contender after being roped in by the franchise for Rs 14 crore at the mega auction last year. The wicketkeeper-batter had previously led Punjab Kings (PBKS) and Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for two seasons each in the IPL, with the latter entering the playoffs in 2022 and 2023 seasons under his leadership.

But as per the sources, he will now feature for DC minus the leadership role. DC's opening match of IPL 2025 will be against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) at the ACA-VDCA Stadium in Visakhapatnam on March 24. The side is scheduled to have a short three-day training camp in New Delhi this week, before leaving for Visakhapatnam on March 17.

It's really difficult to get a ticket in Bangalore , and prices here are 2-3 times higher than other venues. I just hope I can get tickets for at least one match.

The biggest cricket festival begins in a few days! :hasan2

Virat Kohli debut IPL inning
Wow.. Virat faced his roommate, Ranji teammate, and best buddy Ishant in his debut's first over. Look at Ishant's first ball, it almost smashed his ribs, but luckily, he escaped with some edges.
Young Dinda dismantled all three stumps. :uak

Hafeez was also there with KKR.

That RCB jersey looks better than the current one.

Still remember that game. Mccullum played that brilliant innings and remains one of the ATG knocks of all time in IPL.

Rohit Sharma and Shahid Afridi batting together against Mohammed Asif. Those were the days

Bro u have reopened the old wounds with that afridi name for Hyderabad fans.in first season, in one of the last match, Hyderabad has to score 24 runs of 24 balls to avoid the last spot.Afridi is the only batsmen and others are tailenders.instead of simply scoring the singles, afridi with his usual stupidity tried to hoick and got out.

They can use teekshana in chennai and Lucknow instead of farooqi.am.not sure about how long the batsmen will be consistent. Always rr goes off the track in middle.

Samson always runs out of steam before play-offs. Let's hope he picks himself atleast for Indian team sake.Jurel case will be very interesting as he is the Indian t20 team back up and may play eng test series. Pant may go real hard for t20 place.

This edition of the IPL has introduced several changes and has been at the forefront of adopting technology in decision-making. (y) (y)

  1. Saliva Ban Revoked – Bowlers will be allowed to apply saliva on the ball in IPL 2025. The decision was taken by IPL after majority of the franchise captains voiced for the change at a meeting with the decision-makers of the tournament at the BCCI headquarters in Mumbai on Thursday.

  2. Hawk-Eye Technology for Off-Side and Head-High Wides – Hawk-Eye, will measure the height of the ball as it passes the batter at the popping crease which will then be matched against the toe-to-head height of the batter when in an upright position - recorded in advance. If the height of the ball is higher than the recorded head height, then it will be declared a wide. The head heights of each player would be stored in the database and there will be no subjective call involved in the decision making with an automated system carrying out the measurement.

  3. Introduction of a Second Ball – A second ball will be introduced after the 11th over of the second innings in an IPL match. The primary objective of this rule is to counter the impact of dew, which often affects night matches. By introducing the second ball, the rule effectively neutralizes any advantage that the captain winning the toss might have due to the dew factor, ensuring a more level playing field.

  4. Wide Guideline to Move with the Batter – The subjective element involved in deciding wides will also be removed from this season as the IPL has decided that the wide guideline - usually in blue - will move with the batter. For example, if a right-hand batter moves one feet to his right outside off stump, the wide guideline will accordingly shift the same distance and will be used to adjudicate a wide. The Hawk-Eye technology will carry out the measurement automatically - both how much the batter has moved and how much the guideline moves. The measurements will not be shown on TV screen and will only be visible to the TV umpire. The return crease, marked white, will not move. Also, the new system will not be applicable to adjudicate leg-side wides.
  1. Captains Exempt from Match Bans for Slow Over-Rates – most notable change concerning over-rate offences and the captain having to pay the price for that. The BCCI has decided that captains will no longer face match bans. Instead, they will be penalised with demerit points, with a ban being enforced only in extreme cases.
  1. Player Replacement Rule – The Board of Control for Cricket in India allows replacements if a player suffers a season-ending injury or illness not only prior to the season but also in the middle of it. In fact, the BCCI has revised the rule this season allowing replacements till the 12th league match of the season. Earlier, it was allowed only till the seventh match.

Youngest Players to Watch Out for in IPL 2025:

Vaibhav Suryavanshi
– The 17-year-old prodigy has been signed by Rajasthan Royals, making him one of the youngest players in IPL history.

C. Andre Siddharth – The 18-year-old Tamil Nadu batter has been signed by Chennai Super Kings. Known for his explosive batting, he is a rising star in domestic cricket.

Swastik Chikara – The 19-year-old top-order batter has been bought by Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Known for his ability to stay calm under pressure, Chikara has proven his skills in age-group tournaments and domestic leagues. He has played four T20 matches so far.

Kwena Maphaka – An exciting 18-year-old pacer from South Africa, Maphaka consistently clocks speeds of 150 kmph. He gained attention during the U19 World Cup 2024 and has already played in the IPL for Mumbai Indians.

Musheer Khan
– The 20-year-old all-rounder, and younger brother of Indian cricketer Sarfaraz Khan, has been signed by Punjab Kings.

I think Mumbai India will win this time. Long time since they won and usually Mumbai will come to limelight time and again for whatever reasons - form, strength, political power, etc... (Similar to their Ranji triumphs). Surprised that Rohit Sharma is not made the captain again...

RCB will as usual either end up haplessly in last 2-3 positions OR will toil hard to get into playoffs and get defeated again spectacularly in knockouts... Until they find local flavor in their team (a complete rehaul including change of name/administration - Bangalore will never win any IPL... Shame compared to their performance in national cricket which is next only to Mumbai...)

Karnataka is on par with Mumbai in producing circketing talents - they punch above their weight while Mumbai in addition to talent enjoy the best political power/dominance! Delhi is another team which is not doing well again reasons similar to RCB, they are the next best to Karnataka in Ranji...

RCB & DC (and even Punjab) team management have been historically very poor, you can add Lucknow to this... GT will make their presence felt here & there (Gujarat/Modi power of course) KKR has been a surprise package, they are winning mainly because of sheer quality in team management... RR is inconsistent but they have won once... SRH is a decent side and very professional in executing things...

Very interesting predictions from Hesson. He predicts Mumbai to win the cup.but am not sure with their bowling. only bumrah and boult are the solid options in bowling. Bumrah may not be there till first half.even though santner is there no body cares about him as impact sub will be give the cushion .Mumbai have to run down the opposition with batting than bowling till bumrah comes.Till then 70 percent onus on batsmen.Rohit, sky are patch at best as of now.tilak struggles on slow pitches or against good spin

1st match KKR vs RCB. They are meeting in an opener after 2008 inaugural edition.

Kohli vs Varun will be interesting.

IPL hype is unreal but tomorrow opening match is likely to he washout .

International T20 should be scrapped. T20 is perfect format for leagues. This way all formats can be preserved at some level. Clearly T20 leagues have significantly overtaken international T20s.

Regular fans need to be smart, longer duration of league matches are never going to be entertaining. I never really understood why people watch league games from any sports really. There is a massive difference between watching international football matches in a tournament than Real Madrid dominate their leagues.

Simple solution I have proposing is to combine ODI and T20s into T30. One format accessible for leagues and internationals.

ARE YOU READY???

1st game tonight (7pm LOCAL TIME), Kolkata Knight Riders vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru

Which side is gonna start with a win???

It will be a damp squib if it is washed out. Patidar and DK turned it around for RCB last season dramatically with 20 ball 50s. Now patidar is the captain. Can he do it again. One of the cleanest hitter of spin bowling.

Clear sky. Game is ON !

IPL OPENING CEREMONY

Shreya Ghoshal performance - 6.13pm.

Disha Patani performance - 6.34pm.

Just few minutes left for The biggest cricketing festival in the World.
