IPL playoffs, final venues change not politically motivated: BCCI's Rajeev Shukla

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has dismissed claims that the decision to move the IPL 2025 playoffs and final matches out of Kolkata was politically motivated. The tournament, which had been suspended due to heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, resumed a week later and has been extended until 3 June.

BCCI vice-president Rajeev Shukla clarified on Monday that the rescheduling and relocation of key matches were driven purely by weather-related concerns and logistical challenges, not by any political considerations.

The IPL playoffs were initially scheduled to be hosted in Hyderabad and Kolkata. However, following the tournament’s resumption, the playoffs were relocated to New Chandigarh (Mullanpur) and Ahmedabad. The final, originally slated for 25 May, was postponed to 3 June. The playoffs commenced on 27 May, with Qualifier 1 and the Eliminator taking place in Mullanpur without any weather disruptions.

However, on 1 June, Qualifier 2 between Punjab Kings and Mumbai Indians was delayed by two hours due to rain in Ahmedabad. This prompted criticism from a section of fans who questioned the rationale behind moving the match from Kolkata, especially as weather conditions in Ahmedabad also proved unpredictable.

“People should not look for any politics here, the matches that have been shifted. This decision was not politically motivated,” Shukla told news agency ANI. He explained that had the IPL proceeded according to its original schedule, without the interruption caused by the India-Pakistan conflict, the final would have taken place in Kolkata on 25 May, and the playoffs in Hyderabad.

With the revised schedule, however, weather forecasts for Kolkata became a significant concern. "Broadcaster too said that the weather in Kolkata is predicted to be bad on the said days, there is likely to be rainfall, the match can be washed out and they would suffer heavy losses. They requested a venue where the rainfall is less likely,” Shukla said.

He further explained that multiple venues were assessed, including Delhi, Lucknow, Chennai, Bengaluru, Kolkata, Chandigarh, and Ahmedabad. Weather reports indicated that rainfall was least likely in Chandigarh and Ahmedabad, prompting the decision to relocate the matches to these cities. “It was not just about Kolkata. We had to change venue many times in the past as well. So, this is nothing new... So, there is no political conspiracy here... Inaugural ceremony was held in Kolkata,” Shukla added.

The move has drawn criticism from the West Bengal government. State Sports Minister Aroop Biswas on Sunday evening reiterated allegations of political influence in the venue change.

“I previously addressed the media during a press conference regarding the political motivations behind the decision to relocate the playoffs and final matches from Eden Gardens. Recent developments have further illuminated this issue,” Biswas said in a statement.

Over years, the finalists of the previous edition have always hosted the playoffs and final of the subsequent edition.

Raining heavily in Ahmedabad now.

In a way its good RCB lost the toss and have to bat first (guess they lost all their IPL Finals chasing, so let's change the luck). And then there is no blame on the decision at the toss, so just go with positive frame of mind!

TOSS - Time for the flip of the coin. History beckons. Rajat Patidar gives it a flip. TAILS is the call from Shreyas Iyer. And it is a Tail. PUNJAB KINGS ELECT TO CHASE.

Terrible batting by RCB. This tuk tuk approach does not work in T20s.

Punjab will back to chase anything < 220

Babar and Rizwan fans gunning for this Kohli innings

They will look at it as an excuse if RCB wins today

It is such good luck for India that players like Kohli no longer plays T20 cricket for us...terrible knock so far in a final
Weight of expectations. Indian Youngsters will play with more free mind (That guy Inglis played with no fear in a knockout game! That's what laid the foundation for Punjab's chase the other day! Aussies know how to react in a big game!)

All this bs about Kohli deserves an IPL title. No one deserves anything. You earn it.
Even if someone else from the team does the job, then he earns it for the team... What's about earning, even if RCB scores below par score, Punjab should falter on their own?

Patidar ends an ordinary outing with the bat this season... Injury & Captaincy Responsibility impacted his batting...

They are batting like ODI game (in 2023 finals India batted like Test Cricket). This ground and atmosphere makes an impact on the batting-first team I guess...

Why commentators can’t say it bluntly? Kohli costing his team here
Hayden has been ripping into him, best he can, as much as his contract allows lol. Gavaskar also added - no one will ever say anything to him though - about Kohli running down the middle of the pitch

Virat wants to ensure they get to 200. Other batter will hit he will play anchor role still 16th over or something

It’s too easy for Virat. He’s done this way too many times. He’s aiming for 200 and he knows he will get there if he’s there till end.

200 in an IPL final , pretty damn good total and RCB bowling has nobles Punjab to score even 100/150 whole IPL

Virat aiming for a 80 (55) kinda knock

Guess what he did the same in WTC Final 2024

He’s been there done that

What a huge crowd for this final. Electric atmosphere, Hopefully someday I can watch this live in ground. I haven't watched any match live in ground lol
