Bengaluru: Indian players dominated the bidding wars as KL Rahul and Manish Pandey laughed their way to the bank with multi-million dollar deals but England all- rounder Ben Stokes once again emerged the costliest buy in the IPL auctions on Saturday.

Despite all the off-field controversies, Stokes was snapped up for a whopping Rs 12.5 crore ($ 1.96 million) by Rajasthan Royals after Kings XI Punjab, Chennai Super Kings also engaged in a fierce bidding war.

The franchises were smart in their choices with most of the current India players attracting significant interest. Stylish opener Rahul and middle-order batsman Pandey bagged deals worth Rs 11 crore ($ 1.73 million) from Kings XI Punjab and Sunrisers Hyderabad respectively.

With their prices sky-rocketing, the two players' original franchises RCB and KKR didn't use their Right To Match (RTM) cards.

The Karnataka players had a field day at the auctions with India discard Karun Nair also triggering a bidding war before Kings XI Punjab got him for Rs 5.60 crore.

Kedar Jadhav, one of Mahendra Singh Dhoni's 'Go To Man' during his last stint as India captain, also fetched a healthy price of Rs 7.80 crore for his all-round qualities of batting, round-arm off-spin and back-up wicket-keeping. He was snapped by the Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings.

Chennai, however, didn't bid vigorously for Ravichandran Ashwin, who will now ply his trade for Kings XI Punjab at a salary of Rs 7.60 crore.

Interestingly, Chennai Super Kings roped in Harbhajan Singh at his base price of Rs 2 crore ($ 315,000).

But none came close to Stokes, who has been struck with controversies of late and was dropped from the England Ashes squad following a pub brawl. He has even been charged in the matter now.

Stokes was bought for Rs 14.5 crore ($ 2.28 million) by Rising Pune Supergiants during the last auctions, and proved to be a worthy buy with his all-round performance taking the team to the final.

There were multiple bids from Kings XI Punjab, Chennai Super Kings but Steve Smith, Stokes' captain at the Pune franchise, wanted him desperately and thus his owners respected his wish.

"As far as we are concerned the ECB has cleared him for auction. We are prepared for legal consequences too. He will be a very important part of the team. We are like a start-up company.

We are restarting, we needed an all-rounder and hence we picked up Stokes," Royals executive chairman Ranjit Borthakur said.

Another predictable aspect was Australian players getting premium bids with Mitchell Starc being picked by Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 9.60 crore ($ 1.5 million).

The other big buy among the 16 marquee players was Glenn Maxwell, who was back in the Delhi Daredevils fold after five years for a record Rs 9.40 crore after intense bidding. DD had the last laugh when KXIP refused to use their RTM card.

While KKR decided to let go Gautam Gambhir at Rs 2.80 crore ($ 440,000) to Delhi Daredevils, they used their RTM to buy back Chris Lynn for Rs 9.40 crore ($ 1.47 million).

"It is keeping in mind conditions in Kolkata. The playing conditions and wicket has changed quite drastically. So if you see the two retentions which we have had — Sunil Narine and Andre Russel — and now you add Mitchell Starc to that, I think that makes a good bunch of bowlers who can bat," KKR CEO Venky Mysore explained.

Former CSK mentor Kris Srikkanth wasn't surprised that Gayle went unsold and CSK didn't go whole hog for Ashwin.

On Ashwin, he said, "I expected it, reason is that last year Washington Sundar played under (MS) Dhoni and Steve Smith for (Rising) Pune (Supergiant), and he was the most economical bowler. Now he is a T20 bowler for India, because they have an option in Washington Sunder.

Now to the uncapped batsmen. Suryakumar Yadav now. Base - 30 lakhs. KKR take it to 95 lakhs. KKR take it to 1.1 crores. Mumbai at 1.40 crores. KKR - 1.50 crores. MI - 1.80. MI stretch this to 2 crores and then to 2.40. KKR - 2.60. Mumbai at 3.20. DD pull out. Suryakumar sold to Mumbai for 3.20 crores.

Kuldeep Yadav now. Base - 1.50 crore. Kings XI begin bidding. MI - 1.90. Kings XI - 2.20. MI - 2.40. MI take it to 2.80. Kings - 3.80. MI scale it to 4 crores. Kings take it to 4.20 after a chat. Bid goes to 4.80 and then 5.40 by RCB. RCB take it to 5.80 and it might stay there. KKR have to decide on matching the bid by RCB. They use the RTM card so it's Kuldeep back with KKR, for 5.80 crores.

Australian Adam Zampa. And Zampa is unsold today.

Yuzvendra Chahal. Kings bid 2.60. RR discuss and say 3.60. Kings XI - 4.20. RR - 4.40. Kings - 4.60. DD enter with 4.80. Kings XI - 5 crore. DD - 5.20 crore. Mumbai Indians say hello with 5.40. DD - 5.60. MI - 5.80. DD - 6 crores. Hammer down and RCB use their RTM card and Yuzvendra Chahal stays with RCB for 6 crores.

Afghanistan spin sensation Rashid Khan now. RR at 2.20 crores. Kings XI - 2.40. RR - 2.60. Kings - 2.80. RR - 3 crores. Kings XI in discussion. They push it to 3.20 and then 3.60. RR - 3.80. Kings - 4 crore, scale it up to 4.40. Delhi push it to 5 crores. SRH have an RTM available by the way. Kings - 5.60. Kings - 6.40. Delhi and RR in a battle here, touches 7 crores, with DD. Kings XI opt out. RCB suddenly jump in at 7.20. DD say 7.40. RCB are talking about this and they push it to 7.60. SRH waiting patiently. DD pull out. Kings XI back in the mix at 7.80. RCB take it to 8 crores. Kings XI - 8.20. RCB - 8.40. This is very interesting guys! Kings take it to 8.60. RCB - 8.80. Kings XI take it to 9 crores now. The hammer is down. Now over to SRH and they promptly pull out the TRTM card! There are claps! Rashid Khan stays with Hyderabad for 9 crores.
