Yeah due to its format little margin of error you have

WC current format gives you a little cushion but in 2027 we reverting back to group stage which I personally like it will also have little margin of error especially the points carried forward system will be crucial in super six stage

Technically yes, because all top eight teams play here in CT so the margin of error is almost zero but in World Cups you usually cover your loopholes by defeating associate sides but in the Champions Trophy u cant.

No one takes ICC CT seriously to be honest. Till 2013 never cared for CT till India won it.

After the 2017 final maybe Pakistan fans and to some extent Indian fans care about it.

If some non-subcontinent teams win this edition, it will be dead and buried with all the other scheduling.

I rate India’s win in 2013 and Aus win in 2006 very highly because it was a dominant win by the best team. Don’t care for remaining editions. 2017 was memorable for the final and I can understand if it is special for Pakistanis but that’s my honest take on this uselsss tournament. I will say the same if India wins this edition.

In last 8-10 years, WT20 has completely taken over the Champions Trophy. It happens every two years and is seem as a more worthy and shorter version of ODI World Cup due to being a 20 over contest.

At the end of the day, what matters is the worth of the tournament and while ODI World Cup is the pinnacle of limited overs cricket, WT20 is a shorter version of this which happens every two years and is beneficial for the boards to generate revenue. Champions Trophy don’t have that same shine.

There's more role of mentality and luck involved in knockout matches as opposed to group stage.

Since the World Cup features more group stage matches. You have to be the best performing team skill-wised to reach the knockout (semi final) stage of the World Cup. A bad day cannot rail off your hard work.

In Champions Trophy there is little to no room for mistakes. One bad day can and will eliminate you. Here you need as much luck and mental fortitude as you can.

It's a bit like comparing a football league to champions league. At the end of the season the best performing and skilled team will win the league but in champions league that is not enough. You can probably go through the whole campaign and win it even without being the best skilled team but you cannot win it if you don't have some luck and that strong pressure handling mentality.

Lately we have seen India emerging as the 2nd best team after Australia in terms of winning big events and matches. But they have failed to translate most of their group stage matches success into Finals wins. Which on the other hand Australia is a master of. World Cup 2023 is a perfect example of this.

There's a reason why there are so many unexpected winners for the CT. WI in 2004, India in 2013 and Pakistan in 2017 were not even the top 3 ODI sides coming into the tournament but still ended up winning it.

The new world cup format where every team must face of against each other atleast once removes that probability to a massive extent and forces you to beat some top teams multiple times.

OP probably didn't read the history of this tournament. Original name of the tournament was ICC KNock out tournament. It was always like this. But it never got traction at any point. I don't even remember many CTs mainly because it doesn't follow any kind of schedule. They just randomly schedule it. It is one tournament where average team can fluke a win as they just need to have one day or opposition having one bad day.

The Cricket world cup format is farcical and if it was fixed there would be no need for this Champions trophy interim tourney.


Since 1992 except for 96 and 2011, what we have had is an overly long glorified world league instead of a short pulsating tournament spreading the game which is what a WC should be. Making the WC a league format is what has devalued bilateral cricket as rankings do not matter apart from qualification purpose since anyway everyone will play everyone in WC.


Tournaments have stretched out between 45-54 games in last few events dragging on over 40-45 days

The ideal WC format from a global expansionist and maximizing viewer attention POV is a 16 team event. Seed the top 8 teams basis bilateral performance and setup 4 round robin groups of 4 teams comprised as follows:
1) 1 of top 4 seeds
2) 1 of #5-8 seeds randomly picked
3) 2 random picks from #9-16 ranked unseeded teams

From each group, top 2 teams will qualify leaving with 8 participants who will play now knockouts of quarterfinal, semifinal and final.

Total this will be a 31 match tournament that finishes in around 30 days. There will be reseve days for semis and finals.

I love Champions Trophy , a short and compact tournament where every match is worth watching . If this was not being played in an occupied territory , I would have taken some vacation and watch all the games. Hopefully will watch the next CT in stadium , most of the matches.

CT is tough in a sense that teams really have very little margin of error in this tournament and one mistake can kick them out of the tournament while in World Cup you can recover like Australia did in 2023 and won the event in the end.
