Is it all over for Sri Lanka?

After Sanga-jaywardhane-dilshan there is not even a single player who can compete at international level.
i know mathews and malinga are still there but their fitness is a concern for while now.
considering their recent performances in LOIs i am sure they will be regular 9,10 number team for at least 4,5 years.

I feel like Sri Lanka will struggle for a period of time. As we see in the current team, in terms of the bowling Malinga and Akila are the wicket taking bowlers. Malinga will soon be gone. In the batting, it is largely dependent on Matthews and Tharanga, both of them are nearing the end of their careers.

Gunathilaka and Dhananjaya de Silva are impressive and have potential but Overall I have a feeling Sri Lanka will sink further down.
 
Their players can start by making a name for themselves for starters.

I consider myself an avid cricket fan and even I can't make head or tail of their line-up featuring 4 Pereras, 5 Mendises and 2 Silvas at any given point of time.
 
Sri Lanka is going through the same crisis that we were going through before Micky Arthur took over ie uninspiring leadership in the players and coaching staff, players lacking in fitness, professionalism etc

The Sri Lankan players have just not produced the goods for a really long time. Mathews, the guy who was groomed to take over from Sangakarra and Jaywardenene has ultimately turned out to be a poor investment and is just not a good example for the rest of the team to follow.

The Sri Lankan board needs to be ruthless and should seriously consider wholesale changes. Send the message across to the current players that if you guys don't show international level fitness, pride playing for your country and performances, then you will make way for others who will.

Initially I was worried about Micky Arthur's ruthless approach but now I am convinced that his decisions to keep Akmal, Shehzad out of the team was the right decision in the long run.

There is a huge difference between Pak and SL. Pak always had the talent pool, it was just mismanaged and poor selection. SL doesn't have any talent pool to speak of. There's nobody in the domestic league making headlines.
 
No, they will bounce back.

Every team suffers when ATGs retire. That's exactly what's happening to SL.

A fit Chandimal, Mathews and Malinga can be the backbone of their LOI side.

I want to see a strong SL side! :murali
 
They are not trying. Disinterested and disjointed, dropping catches for fun and silly run outs. The players are not bad, but the passion has been sucked out of their cricket I feel.
 
SL will come around sooner or later. Sometimes it feels like this team can hold up against the best in business (not too long ago vs SA) other times it feels like its minnow of the minnow.
 
They need to sack Tharanga , Thisara and build on team with new players. Chandimal as captain is better

They are very inconsistent. They absolutely smashed India in an ODI last year and they won the tri series at the start of the year. They can play good cricket sometimes, but very mediocre at sometimes. They are becoming a bit like the Pakistan of a few years ago!

I don't think it's all over for them, ODI's are their worst format but as a cricketing nation they aren't going to go the way of WI, Zimbabwe, Kenya etc.
 
Tests they will still be competative.

In T20s and ODIs they have become pretty much a minnow side now.
 
It is very disappointing to see Sri Lanka having such a horrible period in Odi . There are top 8 teams competing in Cricket - Australia, India, South Africa, England, Pakistan, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and West Indies . If the game has to survive and prosper each team has to compete with each other to intensify the competition . Sri Lanka and West Indies are just not giving stiff competition which they are expected to do . I am very happy to see the progress of Bangladesh and Afghanistan . Once Sri Lanka had players like Jayasuriya, Attapattu, De Silva, Ranatunga, Sangakkara, Jayawardene, Dilshan, Vaas and Murali and now they are reduced to mediocre players who are not good enough . The road looks tough for Sri Lanka .
 
I can only assume that Sri Lanka is losing interest in Cricket. Perhaps they are concentrating on the next FIFA World Cup:ashwin
 
I hope they come back. Their team of the mid-late 90s was something very special.

They had Jayasuriya, Kalu, Gurnisha, De Silva, Ranatunga, Mahanama, Tilkeraratne, Vaas, Murali, Wikramsinghe, the off spinner, zoysa and in the 2000s Malinga, Attapatu, Dilshan, Chandana, Jayawardene, Sangakarra, Mendis.
 
Three things they need to improve in next 6 months to be able to compete :

1) Ftiness
2) Fitness
3) Fitness.

Its pathetic to see so many of their players with pot bellies. This is hampering them from expressing any talent that they have. Malinga ( yes even after the supposed weight loss) is a disgrace to an international athlete. Even my 60 year old dad is leaner than him Masha Allah. A zero tolerance policy for fitness needs to be adopted.

One issue is we are a cricket mad nation. Sri Lanka has seen a loss in crickets popularity .

Don't think that is the issue. I just see a pattern similar to the West Indies where their Cricket Board is powerless to instill any professionalism in the players, it has been pretty blatant to the naked eye that the players are not fit enough, are more interested in partying, merry making and focusing on the T-20 leagues around the world and are just not hungry, passionate about playing for the national side.

Therefore it is better for the Board to sack the current lot and replace them with fresh, new players who are more hungry and keen to make a name for themselves and to perform for the country.
 
They just beat SA back to back before this Asia Cup. They will be fine. They are missing Chandimal. Why they don't have Dickwella? That is a question for Haturi. They will be fine in the up coming WC.

They need a coach like Micker Arthur urgently .

Exactly and also there is a huge difference between both countries population. Don't think they have much choices in their favor
 
The only format where they were performing better lately,
Now loosing a test series to a team which is pathetic in Asian conditions.

SL is on alarming decline, Herath was the last great test cricketer they had. Now that he's retired, I expect SL to lose regualrly to the likes of Bangladesh in tests. SL has no genuine match winners.
 
Looks like they're gonna lose this Test too but I think their batting and bowling has been fine, I just think run outs and fielding has been an issue for them, if they took their chances in this match and avoided 1-2 run outs they would have won this game pretty comfortably.
 
Without Herath they lack a reliable matchwinner with the ball.

The batting is weak when Mathews is missing and I'm surprised how many wickets they've lost to England's spinners given they've grown up on spin wickets.

They have to improve the quaity of their domestic cricket and end the political interference in their administration. SLC are arguably even worse than PCB in this regard.
 
Zimbawe West Indies and Sri Lanka have poor domestic structure they don't invest much not influence in media which killing cricket.

West Indies domestic has improved a lot in last 5 years. They have 3 quality bowlers now (Gabriel, Holder and Roach). Sri Lanka has nobody.
