Peshawar Zalmi have announced that The President of Pakistan Dr. Arif Alvi will grant the highest civilian award and honorary citizenship to Darren Sammy on 23rd March for his invaluable contribution to cricket in Pakistan.

Do you think it's the right decision?

It doesn't give him any extra rights, why not?
He convinced his teammates at the time, jordan one of them, to come to lahore for the final.

And that meant he convinced all the West Indians to come, which inturn is why Shane Watson is here, he mentioned meeting up with Sir Viv as one of the main reasons he made the trip back to Pakistan.

He should be given Nishan-e-Haider and be made the honorary PM for speaking a few words of Pashto and wearing Peshawari chappal.

He has fully capitalized on the desperate embarrassment that Pakistan cricket has become today.

We have become so isolated and thirsty for approval that we worship any foreign cricketer who shows the slightest support for Pakistan cricket.

Sammy has been hopping on one leg for three seasons with no performances but has become a cult-hero for the Sammy “Khan” gimmick.

He has no services to Pakistan cricket. He is just a player who is playing in PSL because we are paying him millions, and the only reason he appears to “care” for Pakistan is because he has limited earning potential these days and PSL is the only league that pays his bills at the moment.

He hasn’t even been deemed good enough by the Caribbean Premier League since 2018.

He is done and dusted as a player but he is Javed Afridi’s mascot.

Deep down, he must be laughing at how desperate and cringeworthy we are and rightly so. We are embarrassing and this is embarrassing.

Why would he take Pakistani passport when it’s one of the worst in the world?

Bopara is as important as Sammy in bringing cricket back to Pakistan but he doesn’t try to overreact like Sammy does.

Honorary citizenship is just to honour someone with respect. You dont get a passport, nor do you get citizenship rights I.e. voting.

If you want to visit pakistan you still need to get a visa.

In short, it's just like giving someone a key to a city, not like that key opens any doors it's just symbolic.

Boomers always gotta complain about something, Mamoon is a boomer in the soul.

Basically what I wanted to say. I don't have a problem with Sammy getting the honorary citizenship, before someone calls me a boomer, but it's sad how many naive people think that Sammy has Pakistan's best interests at heart. He is just in it for the money. No one wants to lose the roof over their head.

well whether our passport has power or not that's whole different issues.
This guy deserve all the honor. He has shown courage to come to Pakistan when no body wanted to come.

I think he'll appreciate the opportunities this will give him. Pakistan services and hospitality are second to none these days, even the minor cities have too much going on. He'll get the chance to visti some of the most breathtaking mountain sites in the world in Swat, Karakoram range if he wants it, otherwise Karachi and Lahore if he wants the city vibe. Lucky boy.

Ok we know Ghambir should have been given this. Or maybe Sehwag, perhaps Kohli. Just spit it out, which Indian would you like to give this to? :sachin

Your post once again reeks of hypocrisy and confusion. You say Pakistan is a terrible nation, it has nothing to offer etc, so this award means nothing right?

Nishan-e-Haider bought into this too, its another medal you don't value. Make up your mind?

Money is offered to many players not just Darren Sammy lol. There is no need to be frustrated, Sammy loves Pakistan and at every opportunity has spoken about how amazing Pakistanis are and the nation and never once thought of not playing in Pakistan. He is the only 2 time world T20 winning captain. He might not be like your fav Jadeja or all round Ashwin :) but he is well known.

Fully deserved , hope to meet him one day. Come along Mamoon, you might make some friends. :)

If there is any cricketer who deserves it, it has to be him or Viv Richards. Both are passionate about Pakistan.

It's about building a bond, Sammy will definitely hold Pakistan in a special place after this.

Next thing you know if something goes south, Pakistani fans will be the first to cuss him out.

Looking at the list of recipients, I think its value probably increased with this announcement. At least its not being given to dictators or politicians.

I agree with this post. It is kinda cringey. Is taking a couple of PSL selfies and tweeting 'Pak Zindabad a few times enough to get this national honour ?
It's a low bar and I don't think Pakistan should devalue their awards & citizenship criteria like this.

Gotta agree with Mamoon here. I find it equally cringeworthy when most foreign Cricketers call India their second home and love.

This desperation for foreign approval just goes to show how typical desi mind works, quite sad tbh. Disappointed that most here couldnt see through the facade.

We just way too much time on our hands as a nation to even think about offering him any of this, when clearly he is just a good professional and doing his job.

The media asks him those questions, he never 'forced' anything lol

Well I suppose Pakistan could always go the other way and seek foreign hatred instead, like ISIS.

Guys like Jeremy McLellan, Dennis Freedman and Sammy have basically made a career/huge fan-following out of this.

Absolutely ok, it's a mark of respect for his contribution and is obviously a symbolic gesture.

Wow did he really get that, I'm asking that bcz Mamoon predict (suggest sarcastically)this last year or so..

I did. I don’t have a crystal ball, but I have a good measure of our embarrassing and pathetic mentality which disgusts me.

If he has any contribution in bringing cricket back to Pakistan then I see nothing wrong.

I am sure he feel honored.

Ignore the ones who claim to be unfortunate to be born in Pakistan.

Nice picture, Sammy has almost as big overarms as mine, he needs to pump more iron though:)

I have always wondered that why don't professional cricketers from other countries settle in India/Pakistan and play our domestic cricket like they do in England?

We have heard so many of them giving statements like how much they love coming to our countries and love our culture but none of them settle here. Why? Is this because we are still third world countries and there is no value of a human life here? :inti

So the one-legged Sammy is not even doing to pay taxes. Incredible.

How long before Imran Khan gives him a Ministry.

There is no problem but I dont find any logic. I would rather give them some kind of award. And this day an age, doesnt it complicate things for the player in terms of domestic and immigration issues?

There are lots of elements in your question, here are some of my answers.

Money and work load might be the main reason people prefer England.

Temperature and playing conditions could also be another factor too.

Lets not forget these people will also have kids and tbh, schools in UK would be better. Also with England being a smaller country, traveling is not much as an issue.

I think most cricketers all have to say positive things about the country they play in to feed the media even though they maybe genuine. Although I do agree there is an element of developing countries vs developed country.

This is such an amazing post! What a brilliant post!

Pakistan should give the honorary citizenship to Gautam Ghambir.

Someone quick - reply on here what an amazing post I made!

Didn't IK badmouth Sammy and likes before? Something like Africa se laye huye phateechar players.

Guys like Jeremy McLellan, Dennis Freedman and Sammy have basically made a career/huge fan-following out of this.

Especially Jeremy McClellan. Let's be honest he spends half his time bashing India and gets tons of claps by Pakistanis. He does that every time. I've been to one of his shows. He's played it pretty brilliantly once you think about it.

This is not a bad idea - really means nothing and more of a gesture of goodwill. Akin to handing keys of city to someone etc

If people can become senators and get important ministries and even become PM of a country for verbal bashing of Pakistan, what's wrong with these people gaining few followers by bashing India or cheerleading for Pakistan?

Nothing wrong with it all. I don't think I said there is anything wrong with it. I am just saying its a brilliant strategy.

No need to make pointless approximations. What do politicians have to do with foreign cricketers, comedians?

My point is simply that certain Pakistanis feel a great deal of validation when a foreigner comes to Pakistan and starts doing Pakistani things. But they fail to realize that the only reason these Z list comedians/cricketers are doing these things is because no other country (including their own) invites them for anything.

Daren Sammy’s love for Pakistan and its cricket culture is not new. The West Indies all-rounder has been part of the Pakistan Super League and had also travelled to the country with the World XI side in 2017 to support its cricket resumption.

Sammy, the captain of Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL, was supposed to receive the Honorary Citizenship of Pakistan and Nishan-e-Pakistan, the country's highest civilian award in March before COVID-19 struck.

Currently leading the St. Lucia Zouks in the ongoing Caribbean Premier League (CPL), Sammy expects to officially receive the honour by early 2021.

“I was supposed to get the award on the 23rd of March but COVID situation happened and the borders were closed. People had to return home. I would probably have to wait till later this year or next year to officially get the award,” Sammy told Sportstar on the eve of the CPL fixture against Trinbago Knight Riders.

“Nishan-e-Pakistan award is very honourable to me and I am grateful and thankful. It is a privilege to be recognised in a place with over 200 million people compared to St. Lucia with 140,000 people. It is something to be proud of. Everybody knows how much I have enjoyed playing in Pakistan,” he said.

Sammy also congratulated Azhar Ali’s side that took the brave step of travelling to England for the Test series amid the coronavirus scare. “First it was done by the West Indies followed by Pakistan. We should not take them for granted; and their love for cricket and wanting to give the viewers some cricket action. But they haven’t really played well. They had a good opportunity in the first Test but they let it slip away,” said the 36-year-old.

Sammy feels Pakistan is a good side with all-format players in its ranks but it hasn’t clicked in the English conditions. “England has always been difficult to beat in their own conditions, they really put the choke hole on Pakistan but Pakistan is a team which has good batsmen in its top five in all formats like Babar Azam, and you have young fast bowlers in Shaheen Afridi and Naseem Shah and then, Yasir Shah as a spinner. Test cricket is a contest where you have to be mentally and technically sound to beat England in their conditions and I don’t think Pakistan has been that consistent,” he said.

I would be happy being given honerary citizenship in one of the West Indian Islands, not sure what the issue is here, it's just an honorary token of appreciation.

No one has benefitted from the PSL more than Sammy.

Who says Pakistan cricket has benefitted the most? For every Shaheen we have gotten an Asif Ali and a Husain Talat.

If you want to lie then at least lie properly. Smh

It’s the joint 4th worst, above Afg, iraq, syria and joint with Somalia

I have seen many such statements which did not evoke enough emotional rebuttal or reflection or analysis from Pakistani members here:
- 4th worst passport
- FAFTA gray list
- Osama gate
- nuclear proliferation
- Frequent need to ask IMF/Us for loans

Why do these news not evoke any sentiment of reflection/introspection/analysis for improvement in the Pakistan members here (or may be I missed)? Is it because:
- These are regarded as falsehoods/propaganda?
- These badges are not regarded as bad things? (eg. not seen anyone in Pakistan govt come out with unequivocal condemnation of nuclear proliferation or Osama episode or grey list humiliation or mumbai attack traced all the way to elements in Pakistan state). Such things mentioned about India would dent my pride (for eg, the recent news about India downgraded on freedom index does make me feel bad).
- Just dont care enough
- cant do anything

He is very personable. Plays the game while having fun and in the right spirit. Has a good cricketing brain and is one of the faces of PSL. Good for him.

Place That Makes Me "Feel At Home": Former West Indies Captain Daren Sammy On Receiving 'Sitara-I-Pakistan'Sammy posted a photo of him receiving the medal on his Instagram account along with a long post, thanking the government and people of Pakistan.

Former West Indies captain Daren Sammy, who had guided the Caribbean team to two T20 World Cup titles, on Monday took to social media to share a proud moment as he was honoured with the civil award of 'Sitara-I-Pakistan' for his efforts in reviving international cricket in the Asian country. Sammy posted a photo of him receiving the medal on his Instagram account along with a long post, thanking the government and people of Pakistan.

"Cricket took me all over the world enabling me to see and play in some amazing places. Pakistan is definitely one of these places. A place that always makes me feel at home. It's such an honor to have received this prestigious award( Sitara-I-Pakistan) from the Government and people of Pakistan. Thank you," Sammy wrote.

He has also been involved in the Pakistan Super League as a player in the past and now as a coach.

Sammy won the ICC WT20 title with West Indies in 2012 and in 2016. He was handed the captaincy of the team at a time when West Indies cricket was in free fall. His cool and calm demeanour helped the team get back on its feat with important victories in bilateral cricket and in ICC tournaments.

An all-rounder who could bowl useful medium pace and could swing his bat with good effect down the order, Sammy represented West Indies in 38 Tests, 126 ODIs and 68 T20Is.

He has been involved in T20 franchise cricket all over the world, including stints in the Indian Premier League.

Did Najam Sethi get an award as well? I thought he contributed slightly more than Darren Sammy in reviving the commercial fortunes of Pakistan cricket.
