The political parties dont care about PTI now due to their own past behavior, but lets admit it, the constitution is being violated and the Millitary establishment has gone crazy.

Only one that can control them is the Judicirayr and right now we are seeing a fight where judiciary releases a guy while the military establishment arrests.

Is it time that judiciary marches , because now PTI supporters have become afraid and wont come out.

Yes. But nobody would come out since the military has succeeded in intimidating everyone. Even if Khan is killed, you would not see a single PTI worker on the street. The fear is real!

Every decade Military Establishment goes crazy in Pakistan anytime their rule/budget/influence is threatened they do this.

Almost a decade back I remember listening to Hassan Nisar and he said it’s always Army driving the car, sometimes from driver seat or sometimes in the passenger but they are still in control.

IK has exposed them though but again seems influential Pakistani people have fallen back in line.

quite hypocritical considering that this guy whined about SC opening up to implement the constitution during the VONC which he never accepted.

Atleasst now he has become quiet and indirectly accepts the VONC.

Nawaz continues verbal assault on judiciary

PML-N leader Nawaz Sharif once again criticised the superior judiciary, this time in a tweet about the failings of the Pakistani justice system, which he said is “ranked 129 out of 140 in the world”.

Mr Sharif appeared to be referring to a 2022 ranking by the World Justice Project, an independent organisation founded by an American lawyer William Neukom in 2006.

The body had said Pakistan held the 129th position out of 140 on their rule of law index, and that this position was a five place fall from the previous year.

Mr Sharif tweeted, “The judiciary invented the doctrine of necessity. It embraced dictators, legitimised dictatorship and gave certificates of Sadiq and Amin to the Ladla (beloved). Elected prime ministers were executed or imprisoned on false charges; banned for life for not taking a salary from their son. And now it rewrote the constitution by fixing the bench.”

He continued, “It is unfortunate that our justice system is 129 of 140 but some of our honourable judges are adamant that we have fall to the 140th rank, come what may.”

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari said on Thursday his party will not resist any move to impose a ban on PTI “for promoting extremism and violence”.

Earlier, the PPP leader had voiced his disagreement when some PML-N leaders proposed a ban on PTI as a political party.

Mr Bhutto-Zardari made these remarks while speaking to the media in Islamabad, which echoed the sentiments he expressed during the meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif as well.

Lawyers appeal CJP to uphold Constitution

Justice Qazi Faiz Isa urged to ensure supremacy of law and adherence to the Constitution by "powerful camps"

In the aftermath of the release and subsequent re-arrest of political leaders following their bail hearings, the legal community on Saturday called upon Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faiz Isa to uphold the supremacy of the law, saying that some “powerful camps” have openly flouted the law without any regard for its principles.

The members of the legal fraternity, alongside politicians and columnists, addressed a seminar organised at a local hotel by the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) under the title “On human rights, Pakistan Constitution and way forward”.

The legal fraternity equated this "disobedience" with an attempt to mock the Constitution, wherein, the leaders of a political party were arrested again by lodging fresh cases after the release orders by the courts. They also urged the need for fair transparent elections for political stability.

Speaking on the occasion, veteran lawyer Hamid Khan said that the Constitution of Pakistan explicitly stated that the freedom of speech comes under the fundamental human rights of an individual, lamenting that in today’s polity, no one was being allowed to exercise his right with freedom. He said that to bring the country back on track, CJP Isa had to ensure the supremacy of the law and its fair application to everyone.

On the selection of high courts’ judges, the lawyer emphasized a better mechanism to ensure merit and transparency in the appointment of judges. He said this was only possible by amending the rules of the judicial commission.

He said that there was also a need to amend the formation of the Supreme Judicial Council in order to deter any judge found in misconduct from becoming part of the council.

He said that by this methodology the judge facing allegations of misconduct could be held accountable under the principles of dispensing true justice.

Meanwhile, Vice President LHCBA Rabia Bajwa claimed that the May 9 incidents were used to bring a “halt to the political process”. She said that a “powerful camp would disintegrate” when they together oppose them with a show of unity in their ranks.

In his address, veteran lawyer Chaudhry Aitzaz Ahsan said that he had never seen in his entire life the disregard for the Constitution as it was being done now.

A very stupid action by government just like shooting yourself on feet.

The Punjab Bar Council (PBC) and Sindh Bar Council (SBC) on Wednesday announced a strike by all lawyers and bar associations in the provinces for May 9 after clashes with the Lahore police.

Lahore’s GPO Chowk became a battleground earlier today between riot police and lawyers after the latter staged a protest rally and attempted to enter the Lahore High Court (LHC).

The lawyers’ attempts to gain entry into the high court were repelled by police, who baton-charged, fired tear gas at and used water cannons to disperse them.

Dawn.com correspondent Rana Bilal, present at the scene, reported that violence erupted as lawyers, including members from the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA), demanded the dismissal of a terror case filed against fellow lawyers, and protested against the shifting of a court to a different location.

The correspondent said that dozens of lawyers were arrested and wounded in police action, while some members of the press, law enforcement agencies and bystanders were also affected.

Negotiations between the police and lawyers failed to resolve the impasse, the correspondent on the ground added.

In a press release issued after a press conference held by the PBC, LHCBA and Lahore Bar Association (LBA), PBC Vice Chairman Kamran Bashir Mughal and Pir Imran Akram Bodla, chairman of the PBC executive committee announced a strike by all lawyers and bar associations in the province tomorrow (Thursday) against the LHC chief justice and police’s “thuggery”.

They said rallies would be taken out against the treatment meted out to lawyers today and a protest would be registered. They said that the strike would be strictly ensured.

They called for the Punjab police chief and chief minister to “come to their senses” and immediately release the detained lawyer. They also demanded that the Punjab police chief, Lahore’s top cop and deputy inspector general of police be immediately changed.

The press release reiterated that lawyers would not appear in court on Thursday and would mark their protest through rallies and demonstrations.

Separately, the SBC said it was in agreement with the PBC and also announced a strike and boycott of court proceedings for Thursday with instructions for advocates to not attend proceedings.

The SBC demanded the federal and Punjab governments to take immediate notice of the matter, address the involvement of the Lahore police in the “shameful and inhuman” treatment of lawyers and take action against the responsible police officials.

The council condemned the “excessive and unwarranted use of police force” against lawyers and termed it a “shameful act” that was a grave violation of the force’s duty and discipline.

The Karachi Bar Association also announced a boycott and sent a letter to the sessions judges of the city’s districts to suspend judicial work and issue the same directions to their subordinate courts.

Speaking to Dawn News earlier, LHCBA President Asad Butt had said that the lawyers’ protest would continue until their demands were met.

“The police have inflicted cruelty by using force against a peaceful march,” Butt said, noting that dozens of lawyers have been injured by tear gas shelling.

He demanded that the notification of the division of courts be withdrawn immediately and that cases filed against lawyers should be dismissed.

According to a previous PBC press release, dated May 7, the LHCBA’s joint action committee — comprising a dozen members — had met on Tuesday where it had decided to “welcome” the protest rally announced by the LBA.

Lawyers boycott courts to protest against Lahore clashes

On the call for a nationwide strike by the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) and other lawyers associations, the legal fraternity boycotted court proceedings in several cities of the country, forcing adjournments of the pending cases on Thursday.

According to reports, the lawyers across Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa did not appear in courts. A similar trend was witnessed in Lahore, where the lawyers abstained from court proceedings at the Lahore High Court (LHC), sessions court, civil courts, and other subordinate courts.

The call for the nationwide strike was issued in protest against the police crackdown on a lawyers-led rally in Lahore on Wednesday. The rally was brought out in protest against the proposed relocation of civil courts from Aiwan-e-Adl to Model Town.

In response, the police resorted to baton charges, tear gas, and water cannons to quell the unrest, with dozens of lawyers under arrest. After the clashes, the Punjab Bar Council (PBC) and the Sindh Bar Council (SBC) declared a province-wide strike by all lawyers and bar associations on Thursday.

Responding to the call, the lawyers boycotted the court proceedings in several cities, including Peshawar and Lahore as well as Islamabad. However, the five benches hearing cases in the Supreme Court sat as usual and a few lawyers appear in court and sought adjournments because of their strike.

Supreme Court Bar Association President Shahzad Shaukat appeared before a three-member bench, led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa, for the hearing of a case about the recounting of the votes. He told the bench that lawyers were on strike therefore, the hearing should be adjourned until next week.

However, Chief Justice Isa expressed his anger on the strike and told the lawyer that the case would be heard in due course. The chief justice remarked that lawyers’ job was to assist the court. He warned that the court would start imposing fines.

In Lahore, the strike impacted litigants significantly, as their cases were adjourned due to the unavailability of their counsel. The Punjab Bar Council, in a statement, also extended the strike across Punjab for another day. The council asked lawyers to abstain court the proceedings on Friday (today).

Moreover, a general council meeting of the Lahore High Court Bar Association (LHCBA) also decided to boycott the proceedings at the LHC on May 10 (today), after the hearing of urgent cases, in protest against the police action.
The lawyers staged boycott of courts across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. “Today we also boycotted the court on the incident that happened in Lahore,” a lawyer said.

Peshawar High Court Bar Association (PHCBA) Joint Secretary Ijaz Ali Shah strongly condemned the police violence against lawyers in Lahore. He demanded action against those officers who ordered for blocking the peaceful lawyers rally.

“Peaceful protest is the right of every citizen and this right is given by the Constitution of Pakistan,” Advocate Shah told media men. “There will be no compromise on the rule of law in the country, he added.
