Is Joe Root the worst captain in reading Test match conditions?

I do not know but if you guys have noticed, Joe Root has made terrible decisions in the toss. Against Pak at Lords, he batted first with overcast conditions thinking that his batting will bail them out. Got out cheaply and then let pakistan pile on the misery. Even over here batted first and england have messed up.

Personally I feel, Root needs to realise that its better for his team to field first because his bowlers who are aging will have less pressure with no scoreboard pressure and secondly this england batting is not the same as strauss, cook, trott, kp and bell who will justfiy the decision to bat first by making huge runs.

Day 1 were good batting conditions and he avoided batting last against Ashwin in what is likely to be a spin-friendly 5th day. Don't see a problem with the decision.

Bud I read a similar post of yours in the game thread as well. Havent watched the game so far but reading online, many sites stated that win toss and bat first pitch as per anticipated weather. Just like the Pakistan game the players were supposed to grit out the first session (which they did) and things were going to get better. With Root and Bairstow partnership England looked well set for a big total and then they threw it away with some soft dismissals. I guess it says more about Englands inability to stay on the wicket then their devision to choose after winning toss

Always bat first. Get runs on the board.

England batters play seam and swing better than the spin they may face in the fourth innings.

Kohli wanted to win the toss and bowl first. I am just saying this because this current england batting does not inspire much confidence apart from Cook, Root and to an extent Bairstow. Therefore I feel that england should bowl first and get the opposition out around 250. Malan, Butler and stokes are hit and miss batsmen and therefore when england bat first with little help in conditions they falter. Then with a sub score, there aged bowling gets exposed and other teams score a lead of 100 plus. My observation simply is that Engalnd should bowl first and let their bowlers express themselves because their batting is not at the level to score 400 in the first innings irrespective of conditions.

If you're not 100% certain that bowling first is the only option, you should bat first.

I can see England coming back better and targeting virat's wicket. They know its virat or nothing for us. Who knows if catches were taken everything now would have been different. They will prepare green wickets for sure but then don't have batsman to bat on those as well.

My opinion.
If the condition is not too much bowling friendly then always bat first.Xhasing total in 4th innings is always difficult.

Root made the right decision and England would have been on-top if it wasn't for their horrendous slip fielding. Dropping Kohli twice is absolutely criminal.
