Is Misbah-ul-Haq trying to wipe away all of Mickey Arthur's changes?

It is nothing unusual to find a new senior leader seeking to reverse the signature achievements of his or her predecessor. The 45th President of the USA has made no secret of his desire to reverse the major domestic (Obamacare) and foreign policy (Iran) achievements of his predecessor.

Pakistan cricket is in a similar position now with Misbah-ul-Haq. He reigned over Pakistan cricket as national team skipper from 2010 to 2017, and himself had a number of signature practices, including a preference for selecting veterans and a reluctance to select all-rounders unless they are "as good at batting or bowling as a specialist".

There was an uneasy period of cohabitation for a year from June 2016, after Mickey Arthur was appointed as national team coach. In cricket the captain has seniority over the coach, and Misbah largely prevailed during that period in terms of retaining the older players with whom he felt more confident, and with all-rounders still effectively excluded.

Then, from mid-2017 to mid-2019 Mickey Arthur became more powerful when Misbah retired.

I don’t think that anyone would argue that Mickey Arthur had strategies for selection and play in Asia that were as effective as Misbah’s. But outside Asia he did fairly well, and he certainly favoured youth over experience and he also made a point of seeking to incorporate all-rounders in his Test team. He was well aware that, like yesterday, Pakistan all too often falls to positions like 94-5, and he deliberately bolstered the lower middle-order with players like Shadab Khan and Faheem Ashraf.

Consider the following sequence of four Tests outside Asia in which Mickey Arthur fielded Shadab Khan and Faheem Ashraf as twin all-rounders.

Ireland away
Pakistan fell to 153-5. Then Shadab hit 55 and Faheem hit 83 to lift them to 310-9 declared, and they won the Test.

England at Lords
Pakistan was 227-5, and then Babar Azam – the last specialist batsman – broke his arm at 246-5. Shadab scored 52 and Faheem hit 37 to lift Pakistan to a matchwinning 363 all out.

England at Leeds
Pakistan fell to 79-7, before Shadab’s 56 lifted them to 174 all out.

South Africa at Johannesburg
When Pakistan bowled, Yasir Shah took 4 wickets (Yasir Shah had taken 1 in the first 2 Tests) and Faheem Ashraf too 6 wickets.

When Pakistan batted, both failed in the First Innings. In the Second Innings Shadab entered at 162-5, and his 52 not out lifted them to 274 all out.

It seems clear that Pakistan’s fragile batting benefitted outside Asia from having Shadab Khan at 7 and Faheem Ashraf at 8. But their selection was itself a reversal of Misbah’s anti-all-rounder policy, and no sooner did he return to power as both Chief Selector and Head Coach than both were discarded, not just from the team but even from the squad.

In the case of Shadab, Pakistan fell to 240 all out in the First Test in Australia on the day that Shadab took 5 wickets for 73 in his first match back in domestic cricket.

Time and again we see Misbah reversing Mickey Arthur’s reforms.

In the previous Test, in similar conditions in Johannesburg, Imam-ul-Haq scored 43 and 35. As soon as Misbah regained power he was dropped for Haris Sohail, who is in dreadful form, is an inferior fielder and is 30 years old whereas Imam is just 23.

Misbah had managed to keep Mohammad Abbas out of the Test side until the age of 27, and he made his debut just a month before Misbah retired. A vast collection of older and inferior fast bowlers played instead of Abbas during Misbah’s career. Even in the final year of Misbah’s career both the lumbering Imran Khan and Sohail Khan were repeatedly preferred over Abbas.

So let’s consider who Misbah has discarded at the start of his Test reign:

Imam-ul-Haq discarded in favour of Haris Sohail.

Shadab Khan, discarded in favour of Yasir Shah, in spite of having outbowled and outbatted him in the previous Test series in similar conditions in South Africa.

Mohammad Abbas, with a Test average of 18.85, in favour of Imran Khan.

Lastly, of course, Faheem Ashraf has been discarded even though he has a Test bowling average of 26.09, and took 6 wickets for 99 in the previous Test.

These decisions make no cricketing sense.

Form is ignored.

Career records are ignored.

Performance in recent Tests is ignored.

It appears that the only priority is to reverse the changes that Mickey Arthur had made to Misbah’s team and strategies.

Obviously I meant that at Johannesburg Shadab Khan took 4 wickets in 1 Test after Yasir Shah had taken 1 wicket in the previous 2 Tests!

I certainly hope he is. The scam artist favored a lot of mediocre clowns like Shadab who need to be shown their place. Kicking out Sarfaraz was a masterstroke by Misbah.

Whereas selecting Imran Khan instead of Mohammad Abbas is okay?

Every coach and captain has certain ideas and mindset and they should be allowed to apply them without any pressure.

Whereas selecting Imran Khan instead of Mohammad Abbas is okay?

Not that Abbass would have wreaked havoc but he should have played over Imran for being a better test bowler.

Anyhow, Pakistani team is simply not good enough to compete in Australia, no matter who is selected in the final XI.

Why don't you actually refute the claims made in the post by way of actual evidence instead of throwing around uncouth idiocy like 'scam artist'?

I want to add to this. The reason why we are in this hole is that Misbah also did the accountability for the Mickey Era. Clearly he saw enough wrongs there to recommend Mickey should not continue. As coach he if acting on his beliefs of how to fix those wrongs. The fact that his selections have unraveled so spectacularly should tell you what to think about his ideas on where Mickey went wrong.

Exactly.

Misbah is already making exactly the same mistakes which ruined a perfectly winnable series in Australia 3 years ago.

1. Long tail.

2. Elderly captain.

3. One quick too few in the team.

4. No all-rounders.

5. Yasir Shah.

6. Imran Khan.

7. Stupid bowling strategies.

Totally agree with. Junaids. Faheem Ashraf is a vital cog in the lineup. Can’t believe Pakistan is wasting his tremendous talent.

Naseem Shah is being overbowled because there isn’t a fourth quick who can bat.

Agree about Shadab, no way he could have done any worse than Yasir with the ball and him being a much superior bat would perhaps take Pak to a somewhat better total. Faheem is joke though.

Select Akmal and Shehzad and lose. Then Irfan. Now Imran Khan. There is a pattern.

Misbah is embarrassing himself and he doesn't realise this because he thinks retaliating to press questions sarcastically is a victory.

Faheem Ashraf is an absolute joke of a cricketer and one of the failures of Arthur era.

Shadab/Yasir doesnt really matter.

Misbah is trying but his approach is as negative as his batting used to be.

Lol Shadab Khan and Faheem have proven to be average investments so far. Will never understand OPs love for them. They would not have made a difference here.

Junaids you just need to accept Pakistan aren't good enough to compete with top teams in test cricket.

So junaid's harping on about these two world class all rounders we have that would have helped us in Aussie conditions.

Shadab has been woefully out of form and Fahim has had 1 good test inns as a bowler and 1 good warm ODI game as a player yet he should be regular in test sides away from asia?

Also with 2 all rounders in side, it means we are picking 5 batsmen? So which 5 batsmen would we select.

Imam was dropped because ifti scored runs in T20s so was brought into middle order. So that meant only one opener player either shan or Imam.

Both players are mediocre but in end pakistan picked shan.

So what if Imam is 23? do cricketers stop improving after 30? If that was the case players like Inzi, Moyo, misbah, YK Etc.. should have retired at 30 as all of those players improved after the age of 30.

Also imam flopped in both the NZ and SA series.

6 Tests - 222 runs in 11 Inns @ 20.18

he shouldnt even have been selected for SA series along with a load of others, but inzi went and reselected a load of loser mid 3rd test when we were heading to defeat vs NZ

So you wondering why Imam was dropped was because he wasnt scoring any runs in tests! simple!

I think Faheem deserves to be in the team , especially when you are playing guys like imran khan ahead of him. PCB sees the players form in one format and discard him from the other format , this needs to change. In australia you should play shadab over yasir 100 times out of hundred. Yasir shah has best innings figures of 3/174 and best match figures of 3/207 in australia. Wasn't this enough for the selector and the coach? Shadab khan outbowled and outbatted yasir shah in south africa. Yasir shah is good for places like asia and west indies , but in other countries you should play shadab ahead of him.

:)))

I'm glad Misbah got rid of those jokers.

We need to build a team that can win starting from home. Mickey was a disaster. We started losing at home.

Changes are an absolute must.

The great about Misbah is that his ambition of aiming for middle of the table is recognized even by the fans. Looking forward to playing bottom level competition on roads at home with zulfi and Yasir bowling 50 overs each for the next few years.

Imam played in South Africa, which was the lest test series for Pakistan and he got through the experience of playing a world class attack. We came to Australia and everyone can seen over six innings that Haris is playing poorly yet Misbah put him in the test line up. Ostensibly; Misbah’s logic of selecting imran khan was that he performed in the side game here. So if we are going to use this logic, shouldn’t Imam have been played instead of Haris.

This uncle logic of well we are garbage anyway is not how processional sport should work. Mickey’s logic was always to try to give Pakistan two all founders as starters so that Pakistan always has a five man attack available whether at home or away.
Contrast that with Misbah’s logic he simply picked a team that he retired from: Haris, Imran, Yasir, Iftikhar. I am sure deep subside he regrets that he couldn’t bring in Zulfi babar on your

The fake swag duo of Shadab and Faheem are mediocrity personified. One meaningless performance in a meaningless Test at Joburg doesn't change that. Both should graft in domestic cricket and prove themselves.

Instead of replacing specialists with bits and pieces, replace the badly performing specialist with a better performing one.

Any new leadership will try to bring in new ideas to the table that would make the team better in all formats. This is Misbah's first test series, do you guys expect him to do wonders and beat Aus in Aus?

Give him time and see how well Misbah and crew improve from series to series then start judging.

Honestly, we have a new revamped, inexperienced team and need to play more games to progress our skills. If we aren't progressing and our coach keeps picking the same player then that is a BIG problem.

For now, just sit back and relax and just pick out the positives out of these next few series instead of the negatives.

Request to all Pakistani Cricket fan: Please stop being emotional and blaming people when our young, new team is losing. Give them time.

Haris should not have been selected agreed, but that doesnt mean that Imam that automatically is the replacement. Pakistan should have picked another middle order player when the sqaud was initially picked. Even though he had 1 inns and failed in a tour match, Abid Ali could have been considered as well.

Yes Imam played in SA and got uses to playing agianst world class bowlers. he faced world class bowlers in UAE vs NZ and in test series away to england and didnt score many runs.

Yes Imam will improve but has no way justified in his short test career right now that hes shown any improvement. Before anyone harps on about ODIs, its got nothing to do with tests and once we stop selecting players for one format based on performing in another we might moved forward.

Imam need to work on his game and improve before any sort of recall.

Pakistan’s batting has to bail them out in this test. That has remain somewhat unchanged between Mickey and Misbah (barring Haris for Imam, Sarfaraz for Rizwan, and ifti for shadab)

Selection shouldn’t be about trying to collect historical grievances. Unfortunately this is what Misbah seems to be trying to do. I have never been a hater, but this is criminal now. he should have made the call basis the players he had between Abid, Haris, and Imam and yet again he chose wrongly. As for Imran Khans selection - basically brought him in because Mickey thought he wasn’t fit enough. Same with irfan, same with Akmal and same with shehzad (more on attitude rather than fitness).

There’s enough body of work to see this.

It doesn’t take a lot to kill a teams confidence: having successfully achieved that in t20 he is busy doing that to the test team.

And you know what he is thinking right now? ‘What I wouldn’t give if this series were in UAE and I could bowl zulfi and Yasir all day?’

Truly awful coaching and selection

I dont Disagree with the poor coaching or even the poor selection of captain.

Personally i would have liked to have seen a few more fresh faces picked. Yes we were always likely to lose 2-0 here in Australia, but i would rather blood new players and lose 2-0 rather than same rubbish players and lose 2-0.

Azhar shouldnt be captain and even be in the sqaud.

Imran khan Jnr shouldnt have even been in sqaud.

Abid Ali should have been picked as opener for 1st test for me. Imam/shan have both been given stints in side and not shown much. Abid should be given similar run of test 7-10 to see what he can do.

Yes the selections have been poor, but so many people raving on about Imam should be in the side like hes going to be some sort of saviour and he should be given a run in the side. hes been given a run in side and not shown anything. Yet there is a big facination because hes 23 and scored runs in ODIs playing in a snail like manner that he will come good in Tests. go and watch all his dismissals during england, NZ and SA series and tell me honestly what improvement you have seen against moving ball, pace or swing and seam?

I cant really see misbah or Azhar lasting past the england series away, pakistan pretty much have gone backwards for last 8 years in regards to team selections etc.. no lessons learnt.

Anyhow, the batting is still somewhat the same from Mickey’s era. If Misbah wants to redeem anything here, he needs them to save this test match. Australians also chase leather in the subcontinent and sometimes they wilt in the second innings and sometimes they don’t. This is a flat pitch; my mind knows exactly what will happen here, but my heart says that they will show more character batting second.

All that will happen is same as SA series, a few nice flash 30s and 40s in an aggresive manner and a huge inns defeat. Our batsmen mentally dont know how to play according to match situations. More worryingly i can see SL beating Pak again in test series in dec.

Some players should not have been selected that is true. But Juanids actually believes that Faheem and Shadab would have made a difference which is hilarious.

Shadab was dropped when averaging 34 with the bat and 38 with the ball.

His replacement averaged 100 with the ball and was promptly dropped for the next Test IN ASIA!

Faheem was dropped averaging 26 with the ball. His replacements had a combined series bowling average of 150.

Misbah will undo all the little progress we made under Mickey Arthur. Its safe to say that Misbah along with Waqar has destroyed this decade of Pakistan cricket.

We have lost 17 out of 24 tests. 15 of those were under Mickey, safe to say we weren't making progress

I can't believe you are this negative towards Misbah. He must truly be doing a horrendous job (which he is).

We beat the two finalists in the WC under Arthur, and yes, we aren't world beaters, far from it, but we should have continued with Micky. For some reason his misses are focused on and not his positives, you will not have all pluses, but in the case of Misbah you have only minuses.

You aren't a top 5 team, but you could at least select the best squad you do have available.

Ali and Shafiq are proven losers (though with Ali, it is astonishing how he was so good with Misbah and Younis and since their departure, he has been horrendous).

Horrible decisions and the continued deterioration of Pakistan cricket.

Yes we lost tests, but under Mickey were investing in future.

We had 5 or 6 promising boys in early 20's
Who would have been a foundation of a strong Pakistani team 3 or 4 years down the line

Currently we are like headless chickens we can't get out playing 11 right nevermind anything else.

We are playing spinners in condition that favour pace and playing pace in conditions that's favour spin

Misbah will make Mickey look like a genius.

Misbah needs to be booted out. All the hope is lost from No.1 T20 team now.

As I wrote in another thread, I’m worried about a Two Division World Test Championship.

It’s my understanding that Saurav Ganguly is receptive to a Cricket Australia suggestion of a Four Year Cycle in which there are two Divisions of 5 teams.

In Division 1 they would play each other Home and Away in minimum 3 match series.

Pakistan really needs to get into the Top Five to ensure that this doesn’t happen.

Top 5

India
Australia
New Zealand
England
South Africa

If that happens Pakistan won't make it

I am expecting Kamran Akmal's comeback in T20 world cup. Mickey has bashed Akmal brothers so the vindictive Misbah will definitely select him soon.
