It was Misbah's idea to open with Rizwan with Babar. The two consistently put pressure on their middle order throughout the tournament with their conservative approach. The middle order bailed them out against India, SA and BD but the law of average caught up to them in the final.
Pakistan has traditionally been a bowling heavy side in the white ball formats. But they also produced some quality batsmen from time to time who was capable of destroying opponents. But when Misbah took over, Pakistan became a timid side and very often they failed to get to a par total. Misbah's strike rate was extremely poor for his era and he even backed batsmen who were tortoises like him. Someone like Umar Akmal, who had a good start to his career, was pushed down to no.6. Pakistan did win some matches but those were mainly due to bowling. After Saeed Ajmal was banned, Pakistan lost 75% of matches against the top 8 sides in ODIs till the 2015 WC. Misbah was replaced by Azhar Ali, who was similar to him, and Pakistan had slipped to no.9 in the ODI rankings.
The team was heading in the right direction under Mickey but he was sacked post-WC and Misbah replaced him. Pak once started losing more matches than winning against the top-tier sides.
