Is Pakistan's improved defensive batting a gain in the long run?

While today's defeat is not something pleasant for Pak fans to endure, there are few strong positives that have emerged from resumption of test cricket starting from Pak's England tour and more specifically this test match.

Uncharacteristic of past Pak visiting teams, that were known to be more flamboyant and self destructive in their batting, the current team has a pleasant sense of calmness around them.

The ability to grind for long periods of time through resolute defense, something that's very difficult to sustain for long periods but has been a feature of their recent batting starting from the top order all the way till no. 11. This goes long way in wearing the opposition attacks down, and thereby decreasing their potency.

What pleases the purist is old fashioned test cricket comprising of resolute batting, an engaging contest between bat and ball, and a test match that goes all the way till the last day with multiple possible outcomes. With their resolute batting of 120+ overs on a wearing fourth and fifth day wicket, this is something that you don't associate with team Pakistan particularly on an overseas SENA tour, against a world class attack. But this is precisely what the team has done.

While this has been a victory for NZ in the end, Pak team can hold their heads high that they've fought till the last few overs and did not surrender.

It's not something easy to achieve unless there has been some hard work on their technique and temperament through hours of batting practice in a test match simulated environment and with support of coaching staff, which seemed to have happened.

I personally am positive that with this change in mind-set and with Babar back for next test, Pak would present a very stern test for NZ team, and we might see a positive result for Pak in the next test, and the series. If they're able to carry this in the long run, I'm sure the team would be a force to reckon, and will move a few notches in the test rankings.

What are your thoughts on this newfound strength of the team? Any comments are appreciated.

No, because if you keep on tuktuking, even a single wicket results in a domino effect. You can not win matches by defensive cricket against good teams. It might help against SL, Zimbabwe, Ban, WI but not the Big 4.

Well, this knock has come against one of the Big 4s, and they almost enforced a draw after battling for 120+ overs. This is something that you would normally associated with the Amlas, the Dravids, the Cooks of the world and not Pak team.

It's one thing just defending but to carry it on for 100+ overs against a world class attack overseas is something else and that is what I'm trying to underline.

Almost is the key word here. Most of the players you named would make sure that their inning leads to a draw at least unlike Fawad who got out to an innocuous delivery after scoring 100.

I mean we did lose early wickets. I don’t see how being this defensive is a good thing. Like its great to grind it out but you need a balance of both to win a Test match. Not to mention you are playing a live match. Gotta keep the viewers awake.

yeah definitely better days ahead for fans of Pakistan cricket. Need to get rid of a little bit of dead weight and we should see some very competitive cricket from this team.

Well, we've to understand that with the exception of Azhar Ali most of the core team members are new and finding their feet in test cricket. We've to give them some time.

The retirement of key players such as Hafeez, Aamir, Wahab and Shoaib Malik have not helped. Also Shafiq was not part of the current team.

Moreover the Pak's abysmal selection policies have ensured that a deserving player such as Fawad had to wait for 10+ years before debuting in test cricket, despite scoring tons of runs in domestics. Pak team had therefore lost the opportunity of unearthing a batting legend.

We need to give this team some time to get settled and make sure there are not too may replacements unless driven by match/ pitch conditions.

It looks good in this test, because NZL also batted slow and the match went till 5th day final 4 overs, if NZL batted at a better pace. then with this mindset Pakistan has to bat 2 days and six session to save a match and bat nearly 180 odd overs... Not many team last till 180 overs with such defensive technique and mindset... Match would have been over on 4th day or 5th day by lunch mostly....

Not a good strength to talk about...

I don't think there was improved defensive batting...

One innings from Fawad, where to be brutal, he got out straight after a personal milestone & exposed the team. Rizwan batted well. But the rest of the top 6, the ones who count, showed no sign of improved defence at all.

How much longer do you reckon we need to give this team to settle? Cause it seems this team is always unsettled. The players we have in our team at least the majority of them are not that new to international cricket. Asad Shafiq, and Azhar Ali have been in the team for atleast 10 years now. Haris Sohail and Babar Azam have been around. Heck our Test team may be the most experienced team we have right now.

Azhar, Haris Sohail, Babar etc must be around for years, however they haven't played too many tests together as a team. Its the combination I am taking about that must settle.

Just like new zealand who scored at less than 2 runs per over on the first day

If pakistan took thier chances they wouldn't have scored that many runs in the first innings which would have put more preesure on new zealand come thier second innings

How can 30/6 in 25 overs be classified as improved batting?

Or are we saying that it's a good sign that we now have 4 players carrying the other 7 fat free loaders rather than the usual 2 or 3?
