Is Rohit Sharma an ODI ATG?

He’s been a different beast since he started opening in 2013.

Career changing moment

At this rate he might end up being ATG opener.

Proved himself at the biggest stage.

3rd century in this World Cup

4th World Cup century overall

Lol this was one of the most selfish innings. When run rate was 7+ he along with Kohli was scoring at 3 rpo.

Yes, obviously he is. If you look at his record since coming to open, it is almost same as Kohli. Average in high 50s with very good SR. Second in the world in terms of 100s in that period.

He is already an ODI GOAT.

He will be definitely in my all time Indian ODI XI.

If he continues like this for 4 more years, he will be a shoe in for all time ODI XI as well.

Newest member of the 10,000 runs club.

He was the 4th slowest to 2000 ODI runs and now among the fastest to 10000 runs

He's an ATG yes. PCB needs to learn. Rohit went from failure to ATG. Rahul also went from failure to a goated WK batsmen.

Our players have habits of becoming has beens. Learn to give extended runs and bat people in their proper positions. No more saim ayub batting at no 4 nonsense or applying unfair selection criteria but playing hasbeens over Red hot form players just cause the experience clause is used.

When he’s set he’s the most unstoppable batsman in the world.

He’s also the most classy batsman

If I was making an all time tournament team with players from Asia, I’m opening with Sachin and Rohit.

The thing about Rohit is once he gets going he just consistently accelerates and has an appetite for big scores. He also is super consistent in ODI tournaments. Kohli’s star power hid just how good Rohit is.

Kohli is consistent and has that gene to pull the rabit out of the hat in some big matches but nobody can ever match The Hitman in acceleration. I say even Klassen, Miller can’t match Hitman when he’s going Hulk mode.

His pull shot is to die for.. never seen someone get 6’s so easily with the pull shot

The confidence he has in his pulls is surreal. Anything short, he’s absolutely read to smash it for a six.

In the modern era, his pulling has been the most dangerous. Ponting was good at it, but he never WEAPONIZED the pull shot.

Very few great batsmen are dangerous
Very new dangerous batsmen are great
Very few great and dangerous batsman have class

Rohit Sharma is a classy dangerous great of the game

Different level batter.

Love watching him bat.

His range of shots is incredible.

300 ODI sixes now also.

He’s one of the best ever.

Another clutch know for him against arch nemesis

33rd ODI hundred for hitman... What a kncok this has been so far... Brilliant stuff... Looks like retirement has been delayed... 2027 WC?

Hitman still churning out POTM & POTS performances at age of 38.

POTM in Champions Trophy 2025 final
POTM & POTS in Australia-India ODI series

He has been my favourite batsman of his generation. I've watched pretty much all his international knocks since that CB debut in Australia. Even when I had stopped following the IPL, I would try and catch highlights of him.

Disclaimer done. Now, do you really believe he will be playing well enough to keep out a Jaiswal or Abhishek in 2027. Are we that starved of choices to risk not giving opportunities to the future lot?

He surprised me today but both roko survived few calls. Both were not looking comfortable on tough pitches. We should bring jaiswal, tilak/jurel/sai and be prepared for the next wc.

They should gracefully retire. Peak Kohli/Rohit played in 2015/2019/2023. They had peak shami as well during this phase. HOw will 40 year old ROhit/Kohli will win a world cup if they couldn't do then. THat too at home. INdia has to go for multi skilled players going forward. Carrying Rahul, Rohit, Kohli will be a recipe for disaster.

Yes he is ATG in opening slot

My list of ODI ATG in opening slot

Adam Gilchrist
Sachin Tendulkar
Sanath Jayasuriya
Rohit Sharma

Rohit Sharma is certainly an ODI great

11000 plus runs @49 with 33 hundreds (third most in this format after Kohli (51) and Sachin (49))

Anwar is a tier below though. If he is then Ganguly also is (more runs at a better average with more 100s)
What logic is this? Anwar was a better ODI bat than Ganguly. In his prime he was mentioned in the same breath as Tendulker and Lara. Imam ul Haq has comparable stats to Ganguly...better if you adjust for match difference.

He is an ATG in ODI cricket, no doubt about it. :kp
He has good numbers but his choking in WC 2015, 2019 and 2023 when it mattered most after dominating small matches will always be held against him. It is why he desperately wants to cling on to 2027. By the way 14 of his 33 100s in ODIs have come against Afghanistan, Bangladesh, West Indies, Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka. His stats are a bit inflated.

He was never mentioned in the same breath as Lara and Sachin. Thats delusional.

Shreyas Iyer has better stats than Anwar and Inzi.

No. Anwar isn't better than Ganguly.

Imam is a separate thing. He plays in a different two white ball era where averages have been inflated. Using that logic Dhawan is better than Saeed Anwar.

Ganguly played one white ball era, same as Anwar and made more runs with more centuries at a better average.

Also Ganguly had a better prime than Anwar

Anwar - Best rating - 804. Best ranking - 4

Ganguly - Best rating - 834. Best ranking - 2

Once Ahmed Shehzad & Umar Akmal were also mentioned in the same breath as Virat Kohli

Dhawan is better than Anwar in one sense. Tournament king.

Asiacup/CT/WOrld cup performances

Dhawan 29 matches 1772 runs 63.28 average 96.09 strike rate 8 centuries 10 fifties
Anwar 34 matches 1524 runs 54.42 average 78.55 strike rate 5 centuries 6 fifties

Is that your way of saying 19 of his 34 hundreds have come against top tier teams? And what should he have done against the countries you mentioned, scored ducks?

Btw, here are Rohit’s stats in the world cups you mentioned:

Year Matches Runs 100s Average Strike Rate
2015 8 330 1 47.14 91.67
2019 9 648 5 81.00 98.33
2023 11 597 1 54.27 125.94

At least come up with some sense making arguments when you want to diss a player.

Anwar had a huge issue.

Scored 50+ runs only once in 54 ODIs against SA & Aus. The two best oppositions.

I am not talking about home or away or avg or SR, but something very elementary. If an opener is going to cross 50 only once despite playing 50+ ODIS, it's a huge problem.

Also won CT 2013.

Anwar retired with ZERO trophies. He is a bit overrated here cause of lack of good openers in all formats in Pakistan's history.

He still won two CTs performing well in both with MoM in one final.

Anwar, MoYo won jack.

Babar himself has never contributed in an ICC trophy win.

I think overrated due to two reasons

  1. Pak has genuinely no great openers in any format so he is overrated a bit more. India has Ganguly, Rohit, SRT in ODIs and Gill/Jaiswal might join them. Gavaskar and Sehwag in tests and Jaiswal might join them. Rohit in T20s and Abhishek might join him.
  2. Did well against India.

Anyone who has over 10,000 ODI runs is by default an ODI great.

Rohit is an ODI great. He also scored the highest individual score in ODI format (264* I believe).

11 out of Babar's 19 100s have come against WI, SL, Nepal, Bangladesh and the like.

4 out of remaining 8 have come vs first lineups.

1 out of remaining 4 has come in an ICC trophy.

Lol

Kohli, Dhoni, Rohit, SRT, Ganguly, Dravid are Indian ODI ATGs.

The first four are undisputedly better than anyone Pakistan has ever had.

His 194 (with buy runner) really put him on a pedestal. His performance against the best side of his era was poor though. He averaged mere 23 against Australia in 30 games with a garnd total of 1 century. He kept getting out in the slips if i remember right. His favorite pick up shots didn't work against them. It kept finding the edge

Anwar was a flair player with a lot of weaknesses. Australia never let him get away due to this. Always edging to keeper or slips. He and Mahela are simialr in that regard. Edgewar, Edgewardene.

A lot of these 90s era Pakistani players got overhyped bcoz they did well against India. But in those days India was so mediocre that performing against them was no big deal

If u look at their performaces against Australia & South Africa - then u get the real picture. Saeed Anwar & Inzamam struggled against them

Yes on Indian pitches and in non-final games of tournaments

Although he has scored runs outside India but they have not materialized into victories (e.g., centuries in Australia)

Great players don't only have individual achievements but also help their teams win.

No doubt in India, on Indian pitches...he is one of the greatest. Not so much in foreign conditions. But that should not be held against him. Ponting and Warne don't have great stats in India, either.

Anwar heavily scored in Sharjah. Bullied SL there when SL was still an evolving nation. We have to remember Anwar made ODI debut even before Sachin Tendulkar.

ICC events won by India where Rohit played a critical role

2007 World T20
2013 CT
2024 World T20
2025 CT

All outside India

You might want to rethink that. Rohit holds the record of the highest number of centuries (5) in any World Cup in England. In 2015 WC in Australia he scored at over 47 average at nearly 100 strike rate.

I always believe that the best way to judge a player is check his record against the best of that era

Like against West Indies in 80s
Against Australia & South Africa in 90s
Now its versus SENA + India

Yes he is.

SA all time ODI XI :-

Qdk(wk)
Amla/Gibbs
Kallis
ABDV(c)
Klaasen
Miller
Klusenar
S Pollock
Morkel
Tahir
Donald

Just look at middle order firepower, damn!

you need to reread what I wrote

Anyone who has over 10,000 ODI runs is by default an ODI great.

Rohit is an ODI great. He also scored the highest individual score in ODI format (264* I believe).
LOL, so Rahul Dravid is an ODI great?

Rohit has insane record in Australia agianst Australia in ODIs

22 matches 1192 runs 62.73 average 90 strike rate 5 centuries

I think he has the best average by some distance in this regard.

I dont remember any ICC event where Rohit was a major failure. He has been pretty consistent run getter in most ICC events ( except for 2021 & 2022 World T20 )

Reread what I wrote please...I specifically mentioned non-final games.

I agree but Sachin played the 2011 WC at age of 38. Rohit will take retirement himself if he lacks consistency in his performances over the next year.

It's not about Rohit anymore, the problem lies with our captain Gill who is hardly scoring any runs in white ball cricket, flopped in Asia Cup as well as in this series in Australia.
