Was seeing an interview where Brad Hodge mentioned that the Australian selection culture has changed a lot in the last few years compared to the past. Nowadays the selectors were actually selecting players on the basis of talent and potential rather than consistent actual results, that younger players were not being made to actually earn the baggy green cap anymore unlike the past and any youngster who shows slight potential in the Big Bash league and the domestic odi cup gets selected for Australia now days which would not necessarily have been the case in the past.

In the past no player would get selected for Australia just on the basis of one excellent season alone. You actually needed around 2-3 really good seasons and the selectors would not only look at your average but also how many 150 plus scores you got, how many times you remained not out at the end of the days play. I think that Australian team was also so solid that a lot of consistently top preforming domestic players would struggle to get a look in.

How the tide has changed now? What I believe has really hurt Australia is this Big Bash League. Far too many Australian batsmen with excellent stroke play and power in Big Bash are being fast tracked into the national side odis and then subsequently in test matches.

Actually, these local T20 leagues are reason for the falling standards of the teams except India and England which has a competitive domestic 4 day championship.
Pakistan and Sri Lanka are the worst affected by it. Pakistani players play the most T20 around the world even the useless T10! West Indies were bad but not so hopeless before 2007.
By prioritizing these local T20 competitions players and teams have paid the price..mediocre performances!

Yes I agree, just like IPL has made major dent to quality of test cricketers India produces.

The talent has dried up in Australia, but I think they'll be fine once Smith and Warner come back.

It's the future generations that are a concern for Australia though, from what I've read not many are following Test cricket anymore and are more interested in BBL.

I think Hafeez was playing T10 in the middle if an ongoing Test series against N.Z.
Got selected fresh from playing this league, fails miserably and retires from Test cricket...

Compared to other teams Indian players play just one league -IPL. Plus, I think it's not in middle of there domestic first class season.

This is what I've heard too from Aussies, a lot of the players in the Test team don't have good Shield records.
