Ishant Sharma support thread

Since Jan 2014 :-

32 tests, Average 29

Was particularly spectacular in Sri Lanka, South Africa, New Zealand where he averaged from 18-25 and created chances of victory.

Good record in England too.

He's made a great return and must be applauded for the efforts put in.

He just had a tough day and isn't suited to most ODI pitches that they dish out these days otherwise he's a decent bowler and can win matches on his day when conditions aren't so bad for bowlers. Soon he will prove his worth.

This thread is only for loyal supporters and not for haters, fair weather fans out there. We are better off :haha

This thread was made 5 years ago the day Ishant Sharma got hit for 5 sixes by some Aussie no one remembers anymore and everyone thought his career was over.

Always back your talent.

Always believe.

This shows the intent of the captain (more than that the scheme of things - the balance of the team). Ever since India started to play 5 bowlers in test matches this happened! The safe ploy of playing 4 bowlers will result in too many draws and affects the average of even good bowlers. You need ATG batsman + ATG Wicket Keeper + ATG Bowlers (all 11 ATGs + potential ATGs in the remaining squad) like the Aussie team of last decade or WI team of 70s to go with just 4 bowlers to be absolutely safe about Win+Draw+NoChanceOfDefeat! But when you have just few or none ATGs + just good or decent batsmen/players + some above average players, then you have to take that risk of going for additional bowler even if it backfires sometimes! (Actually it won't backfire because the 6th batsman is not that good! Bowlers at least have chances to contribute in a match!) Pandya has to be appreciated for giving this sort of balance outside Asia (at home were already did this experiment with Ja

He is our own Gillespie... Looks similar :))

Credit goes to BCCi for paying lots of rs for his fitness and recovering from Injury. With Bumrah, Bhuvi, Shami and Yadav, he still manages to find a place in Xi shows that he has worked very hard to reach at this stage.

Never seen him bowl better. Take a bow bro!

15 overs - 22 runs - 2 wickets

He hasn't given an inch away today.

22 overs - 28 runs - 3 wickets

The spirit of Glenn Mcgrath and Curtle Ambrose seems to have entered India's beast.

Brilliant tour for him. Credit to Kohli for getting the best out of him.

He has impressed me the most.. how much hard he has put in can be easily seen when he bowls... He speed is good, accuracy and he never looks tired.. best reverse swing i have seen for a while. keep it up ishant

For me after Kohli he has to be the most important player in this Indian side. Especially when touring SENA.

His career might end like James Anderson's. Each series he keeps getting better and better.

He has been fantastic in last few years. Right up there with Kapil, Zaheer and Srinath.

Bumrah, Bhuvi and Shami will join them as well.

India's seamers have been super impressive during the series....better that our bowlers.

Should Ishant Sharma play in (selected) ODIs?

Finally after a long time, india seems to have sorted out their problems in pace bowling cupboard.

We have Bhuvi, Bumrah in excellent death bowlers, M. Shami though expensive has almost 2 wickets per match in ODIs.
But with Bhuvi not in his best plus he is not a wicket taker, while Shami misses more matches than he plays thanks to injuries.

Ishant Sharma off late is redefining himself much like Zaheer Khan, working the batsmen out, bowling tight lines etc.

Assuming that he has a good 5 years left in him, should selectors select him for both tests(mostly in SENA), and in important ODIs(CT, world cups, other imp matches). In this way he can play 6-7 tests as well as 15-18 ODIs in a year with no huge overload.

Your thoughts?

Ishant Sharma's recent test bowling has been impressive.

My question to Indian posters is, the fact that Ishant Sharma is strictly being preserved for test matches and is not played in ODI's and T-20's. Has that actually helped his test bowling? I am pretty sure it has prevented him from being burnt out and his workload to be managed which can only help his bowling in test matches

He does not seem to play home tests too. He mostly plays in away tours. But when ever he got a chance, he delivered. Very good bowler and I have a feeling he will end his career with a sub 30 average.

No more Ishant jokes. He is a changed bowler. Superb line and length along with good pace. He can also reverse the ball and he is lethal against lefties.

Its shameful that the likes of Shardul are playing Test cricket while several other good options are sitting on the bench.

No. He's a test match bowler like Abbas in Pak. India has to preserve him for tests. He's a terrible fielder and bowls too short in LOIs.

Come on Ishant!!!

India vs Australia: Reinvigorated Ishant Sharma Could be India’s Trump Card

It’s easy to write off an average fast bowler. It’s far easier to write off a fast bowler citing his dubious record in the country. That is exactly what the Aussie media has done by pointing at Ishant Sharma’s poor record Down Under. Once a rib-tickler for Ricky Ponting, the excitement surrounding Ishant failed to kick off after his records plummeted. No fast bowler has a worse strike rate in Australia (min 2000 balls bowled) since the 19th century than Ishant.

Having said that, they have clearly not monitored Ishant’s progress in the past few years. He is a different bowler post 2014 as his numbers suggest. An average of 38.81 came down to 29.05, the strike rate from 69.7 to 57.8 and the wickets/innings moved from 1.60 to 1.73. During this period (2014-2018), he has conceded less runs per wicket than Shami and Yadav and picked the maximum five-wicket hauls (5) for India.

Four of these five have come in SENA countries. Ishant’s average of 27.79 is the best for an Indian bowler in these countries in this time-frame. In fact, it is better than the likes of Johnson, Starc and Southee amongst others. His strike rate of 53 is again the best for an Indian in SENA and amongst the top ten fast bowlers in this period – it is better than the likes of Philander, Broad, Hazlewood and Southee amongst others.

Ishant has been at his absolute best in 2018 - with 30 wickets in 8 Tests this year, he has averaged 21.06 striking at a rate of 46.4 with two wickets per innings – not only the best for an Indian fast bowler but also amongst the ten best in the world. He has also been very restrictive this year conceding just 2.72 runs per over – only Abbas, Philander and Anderson have been more economical than Ishant this year.

Ishant has left a mark with his performances in every series he has played this year. This includes away series’ in South Africa and England where he averaged 18.75 and 24.27 respectively and a home Test against Afghanistan where he picked up four wickets in 12 overs across both innings.

These numbers signify a massive transformation. He has modified his length and been rewarded with wickets. He has landed the ball fuller, got it to slant across left-handers and in the process churned more wicket-taking deliveries. One-third of his dismissals this year have been either bowled or lbw, courtesy a fuller length. 19 of his 30 wickets have been of the opposition top-middle order (Number 1-5).

Ishant has all the ingredients to trouble the weakened Australian batting line-up. His new avatar could be a handful for the Australian batsmen.

Provided a good start to India.

Ishant Sharma has been world class for 2-3 years now.

His wicket of Head today was heartening. He set te batsman up quite well.

He look the most confident fast bowler in the Indian test team. All misconceptions about him being a spray gun with no game plan sound like memories from a distant past. In the last 3 years Ishant has been both accurate and effective. He's a sure starter in playing XI.

The bowling average is finally below 35 after 88 tests and 259 wickets.

If he can end up with 350 test wickets at a bowling average of 32 , it would be counted a great test career havign played mostly on Indian tracks.

Apart from being the leader of India's pace attack he is also the leader of style.

I love the fact that Ishant put arrogant Jadeja in his place too.

Ishant Sharma is James Anderson 2.0. From a spray gun he has improved immensely.

Ishant has never been a spray gun. He's lacked disciplined partners to hunt together, now he has two. He's not a bowler who can take wickets on his own. He needs sustained pressure from both ends.

Congratulations to Ishant, is really enjoying his stint as a test bowler

I think this is a fair summary. with 2 other world class bowlers to support him he has truly managed to reach his potential. He is only 30. Another 3- 4 good years left.

He needed a leader who invested in bowlers and he finally got one in Kohli.

It is largely accepted among Indians Dhoni with his defensive mindset was a disaster for our bowling line-up.

Kohli for all his faults, has been a great leader for the bowling attack. Under him every Indian bowler has delivered more than he did under Dhoni.

7 calibre bowlers Bumrah,Shami,Ishant,Bhuvi,Ashwin,Jadeja,Kuldeep that operate together as a group in every match..... that can benefit every body in the group far more than normal. That seems the secret of Ishant's late resurgence.

saini and avesh khan will be next to join them.

The New Zealand tour in early 2014 was the turning point in Ishant's test career - that's about the same time he stopped being selected regularly for ODIs too.

Before that tour Ishant had 149 wickets at 39 with a strike rate of 70. Since that tour it's 123 wickets at 28 with a strike rate of 56.

Credit goes to his county stint. He has improved just like Zak did in his last few years as a cricketer. :inti

Real credit goes to his fitness actually.

He's played 91 test matches already, Zaheer RETIRED after 92nd test.

Ishant may not be as skilled as Zaheer but he's proven himself to be a better athlete by far. If he sustains this form for 2 more years he will surpass Zaheer as an Indian pacer.

A good bowler who has improved quite a lot with experience. Most Indian bowlers would have faded after such a poor start.

seems like india only needs one of the three pacers to be in form. One of these 3 always have a dood day. Good to see india with one of the best bowling attacks. If shami or bomrah could learn to defend and bat a bit, it would be even better.

Exceptional turnaround from Ishant.

He is still only 30 so can play for a few more years yet.

Scored his first test half century in his 125th inning.

Only James Anderson took more innings to get there - 130

fun fact:

Since Bumrah made his Test debut in Jan 2018, he has taken 61 wickets at an average of 19.31, a strike rate of 43.8 and an economy of 2.64.

During this same period, Ishant has taken 51 wickets at an average of 19.70, a strike rate of 44.3 and an economy of 2.66.

There is literally nothing separating the two during this period. That tells you the EXTENT of progress Ishant has made in recent times.

Ishant has done pretty well to hang in there for so long but biggest improvement seen is his art of taking wickets. Thinking bowler, another late bloomer and would retire pretty happy with having played more than hundred test matches. If he continues for another couple of years with similar performances then investment was well worth it.

Pakistan 537 all out. Ishant dismissed Faisal Iqbal, Yasir Arafat, Mohammad Sami, Shoaib Akhtar and Danish Kaneria with 130kph thunderbolts.

What a fiery spell :ishant

Surely BCCI's social media team could have found something better, this is probably not close to being one of his best spells.

It has more to do with the poor guy's career being wasted on a captain who didn't know how to use pacers. Kohli for all his tactical errors is a fantastic captain to have as a bowler as he seems to back his guys to take risks while searching for wickets, dhoni's whole philosophy away from home was don't take risks, hope that batsmen do their jobs and opposition makes mistakes.

This is only a 19 year old ishant though . In his first series. Not the beast we know today :sa

Dhoni was an defending/counter attacking captain which didn't allow him to take too many risks. You have Kaptaan saab on the other hand who takes aggressive posturing in pretty much whatever he does. He is a bowler's captain naturally.

One of the most significant change i have noticed is he is focusing on his stock ball which is inswinger. Under Dhoni he rarely put his best ball to use. Infact Dhoni instructed him to bowl bouncers in one of the test. When he gets his inswing going he can be a handful.

Most epic turnaround ever in a fast bowler's career?

He now officially has a better test bowling average than Zaheer Khan!!!! Let that sink in.

Closing in on 300 test scalps.

Always remember the people who supported and believed in Ishant through tough times!

Bhaijaan

Wicket in the first over for Ishant vol. 2.0

6th of the match

Bangladesh 0/1

Averages mere 15 in 2019 in test cricket

22 wickets in 6 tests

Ishant picks 2nd wicket

1/2 for him

7th of the match

Bowling beautifully. Swing it a lot.

Currently he is the best bowler against left handers in test matches. Excellent control and late out swing.

292 test wickets for Ishant now in 96 tests.

9 in this match.

He seems set now to surpass feat of 100 tests and 300 wickets.

Lots of good things to feel excited about this current Indian test team.

People are tuning in to watch our pacers. That never happened AFAIK

I'm at that stage in my life where I don't worry about these things'

Ishant Sharma is not wasting time thinking about being overlooked for limited-overs internationals https://es.pn/2Obespi

Fantastic rply. Good one

Taking an exception from my retirement as a cricket fan to congratulate Ishant Sharma on playing his 100th test.

A special achievement for a fast bowler, more so from India.

Well done.

I stood by Ishant Sharma when everyone had written him off. I am glad he made people like me proud by his hard work.

That's all.

Because Indian cricketers have proven to be mere puppets of our fascist government, I will not be devoting any more time on these spineless people.

Bhaijaan, you are not allowed to take a retirement.

We have a glorious test match coming up. Make a comeback in a BOOM BOOM style :afridi

Since 2018,

Ishant 76 wickets AVG 19
Bumrah 83 wickets AVG 21
Shami 85 wickets AVG 24
Umesh 49 wickets AVG 19

Success is hard.

I remember the days when i would watch Ishant Sharma bowl his heart out and go back in the pavillion with figures like 100/1. People would ridicule him but I knew that he had given his 100%.

Never had an ounce of doubt on his committment.

I knew he would succeed when everyone called him a loser.

I am glad you kept the faith.

This is your moment and you have earned it.
