Islamabad United 2020 | Squad and Discussion Thread

Amad has to play -- they should really use him as a pinch hitter -- would like to see Zafar play instead of Musa and Saif for Talat. Rumman on the bench

Calm down.

Amad is mediocre, and no, he doesn't appear to be a pinch hitter. Unfortunately, we don't have the luxury to experiment after his extremely poor first outing, losing us the match.

We can't afford to lose any more matches.

Need either proper hitters or proper bowlers. Already have good allrounders.

Imad as expected will get spanked.

Also not surprising that ISLU won.

Karachi will end up last or second last. Provided Sharjeel doesn't activate his beast mode.

Scored 50 off 30 though.

If shadab was not the captain would have played zafar in his place . Rumman for ammad is thr only change I expect . Rizwan hussain for talat could be a good option too.

Colin Ingram in the post match presser:

"I have seen a lot of these rain-affected games in my career but it wasnt nice to end up on the losing side tonight"

"After the batting performance we put in today, and well played to Peshawar today, but it (this defeat) is a difficult one to swallow as they were 15 runs behind at the same stage of the game"

"The crowd support has been absolutely fantastic to be honest; Even in the game like today when a lot of rain arrived, the crowd has been in full voice; They have been fantastically supportive throughout Pakistan; We are especially grateful to our local fans who have come out in their droves and we definitely felt their warmth"

"Shadab Khan has a massive heart and he is a big character and its fantastic to see how his game has grown; Its been great to have him firing with the bat as he has, and with his bowling he is learning all the time and getting better and better all the time; He is a 3-in-1 cricketer and really exciting for the future; His captaincy has been brilliant, he is a warm person and gets the guys around him; There was a small moment today when Akif dropped a catch and Shadab went all the way to him and said its OK, its all good and we can move on; He is growing as a player and a leader all the time"

"To play in front of your home audiences is always special; This ground (Pindi) has a warm atmosphere and the wicket's been brilliant; We havent won as many games here as we would have wanted to but there is a sea of red out there and a vocal crowd and we have really enjoyed their support; I'd have to say Pindi (has been the best for us)"

Islamabad messed with the combination they had gotten right in the last game. There was no reason to bring Faheem back.

Islamabad messed with the combination they had gotten right in the last game. There was no reason to bring Faheem back.

Talat was completely obsolete in that team. He can’t bat at number 7 and his bowling is worse than Faheem.

The messy team selection / batting order this PSL shows Misbahs credentials as a limited overs coach. He really has no idea how to build a team and just throws random people in random positions hoping it pays off.

He’s trying something similar for the international squad, randomly selecting Shehzad, Umar, khushdil, Ahsan, irfan etc and then dropping them just as quickly.

Now all they need to do next is remain in the play-offs.

A series of bad decisions - these experiments need to end:

1. Shadab coming up the order
2. Shadab's bowling changes - he needs to be overruled on bowling Faheem
3. Acting like a clown when on the field, running to the bowler after every ball and acting as if he's proactive
4. Sack Shadab as captain if he doesn't learn and continues to make bad bowling changes

Remain calm.

As long as ISLU is in the play-offs, final is an easy game.

ISLU deserve this humiliation for unceremoniously giving Dean Jones the boot for Pakistan's greatest tactical failure, Misbah.

Munro speaking after the game vs MS

"Last year I didnt have a great season so didnt think I would be coming back, but was fortunate to be picked up by Islamabad and had a pretty slow start but its nice to have couple go good scores under my belt"

"The bowling attacks we face here are near the best in the world I think; You have young boys coming up bowling really fast and you have some quality spinners; The wickets tend to be difficult to play on in the start in the first 2-3 overs, but once the shine gets off the ball it becomes a little easier to bat on and if you can give yourself some time at the front then you can capitalize at the end"

"The crowd is crazy but in a good way! I have had a lot of fun with the crowd especially here because whether they are supporting us or not, its about interacting with them; We are in a sport but its also about entertainment, so if we can interact with the crowd and get them going then its also part of the game and I have enjoyed it so far"

"I am tired of seeing him (Imran Tahir) celebrate like that and I called him a clown and he took it the wrong way and then you saw what he said to me, so we will leave it at that, eh?"

Our bowling is rubbish. We really need to improve in this aspect. Ingram should not be batting below Shadab. Shadab has missed out on a lot of boundary balls which has cost us games despite him getting big scores.

PCB to facilitate safe return of four Islamabad United players

Karachi, 13 March 2020:

Following the Pakistan Cricket Board’s decision to provide an option to squad members to withdraw from the ongoing HBL Pakistan Super League 2020, four Islamabad United players and a member of the coaching staff have decided to return home.

United players Colin Munro, Dale Steyn, Dawid Malan and Luke Ronchi and trainer Corey Rutgers will not take any further part in the tournament.

As such, the PCB will facilitate their safe return and United, who play their last group match against Karachi Kings on 14 March at the National Stadium, can bring in the players’ replacements following the Event Technical Committee’s approval, as per the HBL PSL 2020 regulations.

Misbah should make himself availible and play as a player.

Seen him struggle to get going. Not as fluent as Ronchi and Munro. Not someone who can hit 3+ boundaries an over.

I think he's pretty decent. Doesn't always bat in the powerplay so he's not really required to start smashing right away.

Well let's see what he can do today. If he can win us the match then all good.

IU boys club needs a major shake-up from top to bottom.

What worked years ago has been worked out by opponents.

Same tactics, similar players, a captain who was out of his depth, coaches who are not really ideal for such tournaments, behind the scenes hangers-on who need kicking out, many players who have underperformed.

I think IU's best performance has been doing the Dastak dance....maybe they should just stick to doing that in future :P

The difference between Dean Jones and Misbah is clear as day. Atrocious selections throughout the tournament, the same strategy from start to finish, even though it was quite clearly failing. Benching Zafar when he has shown in three games, why he needed to play every game. Playing Faheem again and again, despite zero return.

This is the first time Islamabad United hasn't qualified for the playoffs, meanwhile Karachi has qualified with a game to spare. That says it all.

Going forward, we need big changes. I will retain Shadab, Zafar and Musa maybe. I like Amad too but he hasn't done anything of note, though he hasn't gotten many chances either to be fair.

Faheem and Asif need to be released. Ronchi is going to be past it too, so we need someone at the top of the order too. This time look for someone from our own domestic setup. Get some batsmen in the emerging category this time. I'll go with Zeeshan Malik or Abdullah Shafique.

Hopefully this is the end of Misbah's stint as well. This result shouldn't be acceptable.

Finally we need good bowlers. Either get some overseas talent or get someone from other teams who are good say like Naseem. The pace attack in current form is not good at all. Ruman is not the same and Akif give 3 boundary balls each over.

After QG's win today, IU finish bottom of the table.

Thats an unfair table. You need to exclude all rain affected matches and the final match where the international player's were unavailable.

Also Shadab being promoted up the order was unfair on the likes of Asif Ali and Faheem Ashraf who are better hitters, so 20 runs need to be added retrospectively to IU totals in the tournament. Once that is done, you should get a more fair reflection on how they did this tournament.
