What's new

His record is nothing to write home about but he has vastly improved as a white-ball batter in recent times. Easily an improvement over RVD.
Carey is someone who is better than what his record suggests. But I am not sure if he is good enough to bag a foreign player spot in the eleven. He is not as good as Billings, Inglis, Rickleton etc.

Replacement player for Rassie Van Der Dussen, Alex Carey will not be attending this PSL season as his team reached the domestic final in Australia. Rassie will be joining team soon.

What’s your issue with him? Did you not see the way he creamed Pakistan in the T20 series? Guy is a good batter on these pitches.
It's Pakistan bro. That's hardly a barometer for being good, let alone great.

He's a 129 SR player. That's his career SR for South Africa, that was his SR for MI Cape Town last season in the SA20. And that's roundabout what his SR was when he last played for IU. Bombed massively in the IPL too in the one season he played where he struck at 91.

If the idea is to get the best foreign players possible then I don't see how he fits the criteria.

Correct. But last season of PSL he had 72/150 + stats.

Seemed to enjoy batting on Pakistani pitches.

Carey chosing domestic Aussie Cricket over PSL. Guy knows his priorities. Good on him.

Though PCB is very lax. They easily allow foreign players to push them around.

Matt Short Ruled Out of HBL PSL 10 Due to Injury Recurrence

Islamabad United regret to announce that Australian all-rounder Matt Short has been ruled out of the remainder of the HBL PSL 10 due to a recurrence of the injury he sustained during the IC Champions Trophy earlier this year.

Following his arrival in Pakistan, Matt had shown encouraging signs of recovery. However, discomfort resurfaced during training sessions, prompting immediate assessment by Islamabad United’s medical team in close consultation with Cricket Australia’s medical staff.

After a thorough review, the joint decision was made in the best interest of the player’s long-term fitness and career. As a result, Matt Short has returned to Australia to continue his rehabilitation under the supervision of Cricket Australia.

Islamabad United remain fully committed to the well-being of all our players and extend our support to Matt during his recovery. We thank him for his professionalism and positive presence in the camp and wish him a swift and complete recovery.

Big blow.

Oh well. Excellent recruitment in picking up Sahibzada beforehand

I’ll ping Rehan ul Haq to draft in Muhammad Faiq.

This is really disappointing news. He was supposed to be the key overseas batter. Not sure if he can be replaced by anyone big at this point.

They can get someone like Hales, Guptill, that South African opener with a difficult first name I can't recall.

Guptill is waaay past his prime. Breetzke is in IPL, I think.

Hales feels like the best and most logical choice right now.

Evin Lewis would have been great but I think he has been picked by an IPL team too.

Is Duckett not available? Kyle Mayers or Tom Banton?
They are not that desperate as it seems. They won 4 comprehensively without Short. Sahibzada Farhan is their Matt Short, he wasn’t in their initial plans at the draft. So he’s covered brilliantly for him.

They should either go with Hales for the sake of it, he will be a boost.

Or back Gous, he’s a good player and will fire.

Or try pulling off another masterstroke with Muhammad Faiq Butt from Lahore Whites. He’s been a gun opener in the national T20 cup too just like Sahibzada.

With Faiq, it can also make their life easier with the emerging player category.

So far they are rotating between Shahzad and Saad…but not fully convinced to bank on any of the two.

With Faiq, you can just back him to go out and have a blast with Sahibzada

Agree with all the points. They don't need tinkering at the moment. Was just considering options if they do decide to get someone.

No it was something like Luhan Pretorius or something.

Kyle Mayers will join Islamabad as a Replacement Player as both Matt Short & Rassie van der Dussen are ruled out

Rassie van der Dussen won’t be able to join us this season due to personal reasons. Islamabad United stands firmly with Rassie van der Dussen during this difficult time. After discussions with Rassie, both parties have mutually agreed that he will not be participating in this season’s HBL PSL. We extend our full support to him and his family.

With both Rassie van der Dussen and Matt Short ruled out of the tournament, Islamabad United has decided to bring in one overseas replacement.

We are pleased to announce the inclusion of West Indian all-rounder Kyle Mayers as a replacement player. Mayers is expected to join the squad ahead of our sixth match in Lahore.

Head Coach Mike Hesson commented:
“We certainly fully understand Rassie’s decision and support him and his family at this challenging time. On the field, while we’re happy with the way we’ve started the season, we’re not taking anything for granted. Kyle Mayers is a proven T20 performer, and we believe he can make a significant impact for us.”

General Manager Rehan Ulhaq added:
“Mayers fits right into the Islamabad United philosophy. He’s dynamic, multifaceted, and brings balance to the squad—exactly the type of player we value.”

Islamabad United remains focused and committed to its goals for the season, both on and off the field.

Kyle Mayers is a fantastic pick. I thought he was playing the IPL. Glad to see he was available. He is someone who should have been picked outright in the draft, rather than being brought on as a replacement.

Kyle Mayer's is a interesting pick. With Sahinzada Farhan & Colin Munro becoming a hits for IU, Andries Gous scoring runs in the last game. Agha returning from injury will likely draft into No.4, Shadab at No.5 will probably make Mayers either No.6 ahead of Azam or No.7 behind Azam.

IUs biggest and perhaps only real weakness is Azam’s embarrassing keeping. You just can’t have someone like him in the most specialized position in cricket.

They need to play Mayers at 3 or 4. Mayers plays way too many dot balls. Gous is doing fine as an opener.

Alex Hales apparently coming in as a replacement for someone

Not really keen on this, I wanted Faiq Butt to have a go with Sahibzada Farhan

If true, I am guessing it will be either for Munro or Gous.

Holder coming back or not???

He is their key player atm. Islu needs him

Alex Hales on rejoining Islamabad United:

“Islamabad United has always been very close to my heart. They were the first PSL team I played for in Pakistan, and the support I’ve received from the fans and the franchise has been incredible throughout. When they signed me back in April, I was really looking forward to joining up with the squad for the latter stages of the tournament. With the change in PSL dates, I’ve had to reshuffle a few commitments—but I’m absolutely thrilled to be back in Pakistan playing in Red. Hopefully, I can contribute and help the team push for another title.”

IU definitely need Rassie more than Hales at the moment

They are slumping every time if Farhan doesn’t fire or Munro isn’t holding it together for them.

All depends on who isn't coming back.

My guess is Mayers is one name who isn't returning.

*Rassie van der Dussen Joins Islamabad United for The Remainder of PSL X*

Islamabad United is delighted to welcome South Africa’s star batter *Rassie van der Dussen* for the remainder of *HBL PSL X*

We are delighted to announce that Australian allrounder Ben Dwarshuis will be returning to Pakistan for the remainder of HBL PSL X. A familiar face in red, Ben’s return adds further depth and balance the star studded lineup of the Pakistan Super League. We look forward to welcoming him back.

Islu will be happy. Their squad is almost fully back

Munro, Mayers and Holder don't look like they are coming back.

I think RVD and Hales were replacements for Munro and Mayers.

Hales
Farhan
Rassie

Solid top 3

Now they have that big slide in the middle. Agha needs to up his game

Gous should fit in and keep it real

Good replacement players drafted

Farhan and Hales can be a dream combo for Islu... Not sure about Hales' form atm. He is getting left behind but he is a dangerous player.

Hales is definitely a good selection. I wonder why he was not selected in original draft

IU needs to settle into a fixed eleven now with no more experimentation.
Hales
Farhan
Rassie
Agha
Neesham
Shadab
Azam
Imad
Dwarshuis
Naseem
Shehzad

So none of the original oversees players except Dwarshuis is returning it seems.
Yeah. Holder is a big loss. I like Neesham but I don't feel he has the same ability with the ball as Holder.

Mayers and Munro hadn't done anything anyway. So I'm not sure if they are really missed at all. RVD is definitely an upgrade over Munro and Hales may be an upgrade over Mayers.

Tymal Mills is okay as a back-up but he shouldn't be playing over Dwarshius.

tbh I think Meredith is a bigger loss with the ball. Mayers as good as he looks while batting plays too many dots in between those brute shots. Munro was doing well but Rassie is a much better strike rotator than Munro something IU needs more atm.
The pace unit has gotten weaker but Neesham is a much better t20 batter than Holder. Gous is a big loss as now the humpty dumpty Azam will have to play now. 4 pacers 3 spinners would do now. Shehzad can't be trusted yet so Neesham could be used situationally. Imad should be a sole spinner and Shadab and Agha to only bowl once pitch is slow. Shadab's form with the ball has been pretty woeful.

Yes, Gous is also a big loss. But not sure if I agree about Riley Meredith. He has done nothing all tournament. By comparison Dwarshius is far more of a thinking bowler and can offer something with the bat too.

I'd blame the consistent chop and change for that. None of their oversees pacers got a stretch of games to build any sort of rhythm or get used to the different grounds. Meredith was bowling better in patches and swinging it at good pace.

Shadab has bowled well in the PSL this season so I think they can rely on him to bowl a full spell.

Don’t think so

Shahzad can bat. He’s got that spark about him, plus he’s a gun fielder

The Shah bros are rubbish fielders
Shahzad's bowling is pedestrian and he has only played one innings of note in a match that was already lost when he came in. What's the point of playing him if he will bat somewhere between 8 and 10 and bowl one over?

Hunain Shah is atleast a more reliable option with the ball. Shahzad is neither a reliable batter nor a reliable bowler.

I'm not sure what they were thinking with their strategy of giving everyone a chance. Clearly it did not work as they lost 5 of their last 6 matches. But personally speaking, I wasn't really impressed much by Meredith even when he did play.

I think they should give him another go at 3.

I was genuinely very impressed with him at that position. He’s a fearless batter.

I wouldn't send him above RVD. But I don't think it matters. They will probably send him at 9, if he plays.

Experimentation is fine especially in franchises as it helps players get exposed to new roles. But you need to figure out your best eleven at some point. IU went overboard with rotation and experiments

Shadab is a weird deal. When he is bowling well (like in wt20 2021 and 2022), he looks like a million bucks. Same thing with his batting, when he is batting well, he makes it look so easy and has incredible range. But when it doesn't come off, he ends up looking like an unfit club player. And I don't get why the guy has been dealing with a groin injury for last 2 years now.

Not sure what happens to him when he plays for Pakistan or why he has been throwing full-toss after full-toss for the last two 2 years

His form just fell off a cliff after 2022

Hales only came for 2 games! :ROFLMAO:

Islamabad United would like to clarify the situation regarding Alex Hales’ unavailability for the remainder of HBL Pakistan Super League Season 10.

Alex was originally available for the full duration of the tournament, as the playoffs were scheduled to conclude by May 18. However, following the rescheduling of the PSL, which extended the tournament dates beyond May 18, Alex had to attend a pre-agreed personal commitment.

He is traveling to Spain for the wedding of his best friend—an engagement he had communicated with the franchise about at the time of signing. This understanding was mutually agreed upon between Islamabad United and Alex.

Alex remains a valued part of the Islamabad United family. We thank him for his professionalism, his contributions this season.

Hales said, “It’s always a pleasure playing for IU—this franchise feels like family to me. I’ve loved being part of the group again this season and wish the boys all the best for the rest of the playoffs. I’ll be cheering the team on from Spain!”

I assume they have his replacement ready to play tomorrow since it was all "pre-agreed"?

Alex Hales update: He was originally available for the full tournament. After the HBLPSLX was rescheduled beyond May 18, he had to leave for a pre-agreed personal commitment, his best friend’s wedding in Spain. This was communicated & mutually agreed upon with IU.
