Islamabad United, the most successful franchise in HBL PSL history, and the winner of the first and third editions of the tournament, is pleased to announce that Azhar Mahmood will be joining the franchise as the Head Coach for the seventh edition of the HBL PSL. Johan Botha, Islamabad United’s Head Coach in HBL PSL 6, will be unable to join the franchise this season due to his commitments in Australia. Under Botha Islamabad United finished with the best league stage of any team in HBL PSL history last season.

Mahmood, the former Pakistan international, played 164 matches for the national team, in addition to playing franchise T20 cricket in England, New Zealand, India, Australia, South Africa and the West Indies. He was part of Islamabad United’s title-winning squad in HBL PSL 1. Following his playing career he has gone on to have a successful coaching career in the PSL as part of the staff of Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans, in addition to being the Bowling Coach of the Pakistan national team from 2016 to 2019. Most recently he was brought in as a consultant for the England national team in the summer of 2021, following his stint as the bowling coach of the Oval Invincibles in the Hundred.

Regarding his appointment Mahmood said, “I was part of Islamabad United’s title winning team in PSL 1. The franchise and the twin cities of Islamabad and Rawalpindi are quite close to my heart as my hometowns. United have always paved the way and provided a platform for emerging players, from Shadab to Asif to most recently Wasim, all started their careers here. It is not only a great platform for grooming local players but coaches too. Saeed Ajmal is such an example and I look forward to working with him this year now that I take a new path in my career as the Head Coach of Islamabad United. I am obviously familiar with most of the guys there. It was an absolute pleasure to be the bowling coach of Hassan, Shadab, Faheem and co in my stint as Pakistan’s bowling coach. Together we became the number 1 T20 team in the world for an extended period of time. I have played franchise cricket all over the world and I look forward to sharing my experience with the guys at Islamabad United. The franchise believes in unity, empowers youngsters and believes in data; those are values which are dear to me. I thank Mr Ali Naqvi for the trust he has put in me and I will do my best to deliver to his expectations. At the end of the day we are a family and #UnitedWeWin.”

Ali Naqvi, the Owner of Islamabad United, said, “Azhar was with us back in 2016 and his subsequent success as a bowling coach is not a surprise to anyone who interacted with him then. Seeing the development of so many of the young bowlers in the national team over the last five years is a testament to his work ethic. Islamabad United believes in grooming our players and coaches from within, and we are pleased to have Azhar back as part of the family. The development of our players has been a source of pride for us, with three former Emerging Category players being part of Pakistan’s T20 World Cup squad this year, but the same is true of our coaching staff. We began this journey with only one local as part of our coaching staff back in 2016, and we are pleased that our staff this year will be overwhelmingly local, led by Azhar. Furthermore, Azhar provides the progressive understanding of T20 cricket that we pride ourselves on, and we are confident that he will do his utmost in achieving our shared goals.”

Surprised they didnt went after Misbah. Maybe he rejected the offer and doesnt look to work as coach in near future.

Was hoping to see him as coach for my hometown team

Nothing against Azhar but they are likely saving some $$ in this move and may look to bring some more star players this PSL perhaps.

Lol @ he rejected the offer.

Azhar has following coaching credentials:

- He is title winning coach of Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans.
- In his coaching, Pakistan team sustained No.1 position in T20Is for a long period of time.
- In his coaching, Pakistan had a decent ODI world cup.
- He has played league cricket around the world and was part of the coaching setup in England as well (in 2021 I think).

Now what are Misbah's credentials as coach? From the top of my mind, he has achieved the following:

- Losing against SL C team at home in T20Is.
- Losing against Eng Z team in ODIs.
- Playing unfit players like Akmal, Irfan, Sharjeel, Azam e.t.c.
- IU had a terrible season when Misbah was coach.
- Rankings go down in every format.
- Running away from the job when a world event is approaching.

Yes, sure he rejected the offer. :D

Surrey have promoted assistant coach Gareth Batty to interim head coach for the 2022 season following the departure of predecessor Vikram Solanki.

Batty, 44, will be assisted by Azhar Mahmood and Jim Troughton.

Mahmood returns to The Oval following an eventful playing career with Surrey, while ex-Warwickshire head coach Troughton joins for the first time.

Gareth Batty will step up as Surrey’s interim Head Coach for the 2022 season – supported by Jim Troughton and Azhar Mahmood, who will shortly join the Club as interim assistants.

Batty who has been serving as an Assistant Coach at the club across all aspects of the professional squad since finishing his playing career, will take over from Vikram Solanki on an interim basis, serving as Head Coach until the end of the 2022 season.

Batty will be assisted by Jim Troughton, who joins Surrey for the first time, and Azhar Mahmood, who is returning to Surrey as a coach after a storied professional career that saw him win the County Championship, the National League and the T20 Cup for Surrey.

Troughton is a former Head Coach of Warwickshire, who worked as a batting consultant to Somerset last year. He enjoyed a fifteen-year career as a player, playing six One Day Internationals for England and captaining Warwickshire to the County Championship in 2012.

Azhar will assist until the end of July, when he will return to an existing role with the Oval Invincibles in The Hundred. As a coach he has international experience as bowling coach with Pakistan as well as working with the Karachi Kings and Multan Sultans. He is currently Head Coach of Islamabad United in the Pakistan Super League.

Both Troughton and Azhar will arrive at the Club in early March, in time to play a full role in the Club’s pre-season programme.

At the end of the season the club will advertise for the new coaching roles when a full recruitment process, including the implementation of the Rooney Rule, will take place.

Speaking this week, Gareth Batty (above working with Ben Foakes last summer) said: “To be offered this opportunity is a great but very unexpected honour for me. After retiring last summer, I was really enjoying working under Vikram and I see this as a great chance to keep working with this group of players.”

Jim Troughton (below) added: “I have a huge amount of respect for Alec Stewart and Vikram Solanki. Both were instrumental in me making this decision to join an illustrious club such as Surrey CCC. Alec’s vision for the role and the chance to work with some fantastic senior and junior players in the current set up is extremely exciting.

“Surrey have the ability to compete in all forms, possess current and potential England players and to be a part of that is a fantastic opportunity. I can’t wait to get started.”

Speaking from Pakistan, where is working on the Pakistan Super League, Azhar Mahmood (below) said: “I’m very excited and thrilled to be back at Surrey County Cricket Club. The club is very close to my heart and I’m looking forward to working with old friends and new and a very talented and skilful squad.”

Surrey CCC Director of Cricket, Alec Stewart, concluded: “Losing our Head Coach and an Assistant Coach so close to the start of the season is not ideal but I have every confidence in Gareth, Jim and Azhar stepping up to the plate and passing on their vast experience and knowledge to the squad.

“Gareth knows the club inside out and already has the respect of the dressing room which will make his transition to Interim Head Coach a seamless one.

“Jim and Azhar are both excellent additions to our coaching team and I look forward to them working with the players and being an important part of our set up this season.”
