Karachi, Pakistan – 24 March 2025 – Karachi Kings, the HBL PSL franchise of the largest city of Pakistan, today announced the appointment of Australian cricketing superstar David Warner as captain for the upcoming HBL Pakistan Super League (PSL) Season 10. The dynamic left-handed batsman, renowned for his aggressive leadership and match-winning prowess, will spearhead the franchise’s campaign in the highly anticipated season.

Warner, a World Cup-winning veteran and one of the most explosive openers in T20 cricket, brings a wealth of experience to the role. With over a decade of leadership in global leagues, including Big Bash League (BBL), Warner is poised to inspire a fresh chapter for the Kings. Notably, Warner was the first pick of Karachi Kings in the HBL PSL Players Draft 2025, held at the iconic Hazuri Bagh in Lahore on January 13, 2025, underscoring the franchise’s confidence in his abilities.

The franchise extended heartfelt gratitude to Shan Masood, last season’s captain, for his instrumental role in reshaping the team. Shan Masood’s steadfast leadership during HBL PSL 9 laid the groundwork for a revitalized Karachi Kings, blending youth and experience. The management praised his professionalism, tactical acumen, and dedication to fostering a cohesive unit.

Karachi Kings Owner Salman Iqbal:

“We are thrilled to welcome David Warner to the Karachi Kings family as our new captain. His track record as a leader and match-winner aligns perfectly with our vision for HBL PSL 10. At the same time, we extend our deepest appreciation to Shan Masood for his exceptional contributions last season. His efforts were pivotal in building a strong foundation, and we look forward to his continued role as a key player in the squad.”

The HBL Pakistan Super League Season 10 will commence on Friday, 11 April 2025. The Karachi Kings will begin their campaign on Saturday, 12 April 2025, at their home ground, the National Bank Stadium, Karachi, where they will face off against Multan Sultans. Fans can expect a thrilling showcase of cricketing excellence as the Kings, under Warner’s leadership, aim to reclaim the HBL PSL trophy.

It's a stupid move

Never make a foreigner a captain in the PSL

They don't know much about the local talent, hence will go with safety first names

Unless the coach (which is highly doubtful) is well versed regarding local talent, only then appoint a foreign captain

You think a guy like Warner won’t work out who is the best options and players out of those he will see in training?

Never doubt an Aussie stalwart and their leadership.

Well, I'm recalling from the past where an accomplished intl. cricketer was the captain and was completely clueless about the local talent

It was frustrating because rubbish locals were being played

Can't remember who it was or team, but that's why I said that

So Warner can't figure out whos a good player and who isn't despite playing for one of the greatest odi + test teams of all time and arguably being their top 3 greatest whiteball openers in the modern era (debatable with gilchrist and hayden) and probably their greatest ever t20 player ever.

But our local talented captains who have done a fabulous job turning our t20 team into a world class Canada and USA competing unit can?

Recon Shan Masood will just have a reserved seat on the bench next to Kane Williamson who he can chat too all the time now. That’s what he said at the PSL draft.

Not sure where he fits into this side

The top 3 will be Warner, Seifert and Vince

Why not appoint Williamson then?

He is even better than Warner

Also, read above what I said and it has failed in the past as well

For you to assume he'll be able to identify by looking at them in the nets is outrageous

Does he have track record of being able to identify talent?

No bro.As a srh fan since start, issue with him and his captaincy is that he is a huge egotistic. sometimes its die hard movie kind of stuff. He captained srh but never bothered to improve team mo which was a perennial issue for 6 seasons i believe. He wants himself to be the centre of attraction and thinks he has to be the only batting muscle.so he never brought any good middle order pool .he scored almost 800 runs when srh won last time.once he was done , that die hard approach failed quite miserably.Kane is better option to pick the team and nurture them.As Warner, Kane, Nabi together played for srh, its Kane to take care of backroom operations. Nabi will help him out with local players.i see a good squad .so they got a better chance to lift the cup.

Warner won an IPL title as captain and did a very good job managing the young Indian local and domestic talent.

One thing for sure he will demand 100% on the field. Can the local talent live up to that and not get offended needs to be seen.

Lmaooo

Karachi kings is a dumpster fire.

The guy who is said to be one of the worst mates in the dressing room and is most likely here for 1 season is now the captain of KK?

Would be hilarious if he is bought in an IPL team if any more injury occurs.

Are you upset because Tuk Tuk agenda Shan was booted out?

He’s not fully available, plus he isn’t really a top tier T20 player.

Warner is the right decision
Okay, that explains it

Personally, I'm not a fan of foreign captains and it did backfire previously

Well, that's positive and interesting to hear

However, I think in the ipl he would have worked at the same team for more than year or two right?

Here he is coming in probably for one season and that too without much experience around the team, plus for only 4-6 weeks and needs quick results

I hope he does demand 100% on the field and leads by example

Great pick for Karachi. David Warner is a legend of the game and even at this age he can contribute in T20 cricket with all his experience and talent. He just recently retired so almost an international athlete. Good bargain for PSL.

More than the money love for his game is endless. He made over 12 million USD from IPL alone. He could have happily been doing commentary. But he is still available to play league cricket.

even while being off form with the bat, Warner’s professionalism, work ethic and fielding has never been in debate: he plays hard Aussie style. However I did hear that he doesn’t have patience if you don’t give 100% with basic things like fielding, that’s why a more mellow character like Williamson is usually preferred even more so in subcontinent where our sensibilities don’t work the same way.

Kane is a bit more strategical. Warner is a bit more practical. Both are good. batting form of them can impact their captaincy.

Wondering if this will help the Franchise from a branding, marketing point of view.

He had a freak run at the IPLs over the years. Crazy consistency and impact. The guys been a top batter across all formats. Weird personality though. Aggressive on the field and off the field he’s totally different bloke lol

Good option for Karachi. There’s few Pakistanis in their squad to really choose from.

But bad for Pakistan as we need Pakistani captains to give them experience especially since we have such few teams.

David Warner is the GOAT IPL player. SRH won their one and only IPL trophy under Warner’s magnificent captaincy. Under his leadership, SRH’s bowling unit was absolutely lethal. Batting unit wasn't aggressive. Warner built a team around a solid bowling core that could defend almost any total.
Kane Williamson should not be playing T20 cricket, let alone leading a side in this format.

Probably the best decision KK could make. Shan Masood despite his domestic T20 numbers, doesn't warrant a position this tournament. Better to give a younger domestic batter a chance.

This would have made sense if he was captaining like Abbottabad in National T20. But in PSL it's no problem. He knows all the local players, have even played against them (eg. Hasan Ali, Shan Masood, Mir Hamza, etc).

Only the two emerging players he might not know of. Which is honestly not a big deal. Even many local fans get to see emerging player for the first time on a big platform. Not to mention there are local senior players and coaches who will be assisting Warner.

Maybe no. 4 if needed.

He will make Karachi Kings Great Again. Top players, hopefully he still has the stamina to score big runs.
