Islamabad United appoint Shadab Khan as captain for Pakistan Super League

Is Shadab Khan boldly leading the charge as both captain and bowler in this PSL?

Shadab Khan bowls a classy spell against PZ in the second Eliminator of PSL 9. His figures today were 1/36 in 4 overs.

In a post-match ceremony after winning the final of PSL 9, Shadab Khan said:

"Ever since I was appointed as captain, I've taken the initiative to promote myself in batting and I've performed really well because batting has always been my forte. I've always believed that regardless of the time I get, I can excel as a batsman. As you know, playing as an all-rounder and being positioned at 6th or 7th doesn't give me the batting strength I need. I believe I can contribute more effectively batting at the 4th or 5th position which would also greatly benefit the team."

"I faced some struggles when I started playing in this tournament so I've been working on improving my technical issues and that progress is ongoing. Hopefully in the coming days I will enhance my skills further as a bowler because I firmly believe that whenever I play for a team as a bowler it adds strength to their lineup."

"Watching the match from the sidelines is quite tough for me, but when I'm on the field, I don't feel any pressure. As you know, when I get out and leave the ground, it becomes very difficult for me to watch the game. In fact, I feel like anyone sitting with me feels pressure, which is why I avoid sitting with anyone next to me who might feel the pressure while watching me."

"It was a very good final but we couldn't perform the way we wanted to. You know, this is the mark of a great team that even when it doesn't play its best, it still manages to win. The support from our management and owners really helped us a lot. As you know, I've been a captain for the last 5 years but couldn't win any titles, so in this PSL there was a lot of hard work and belief which is why this trophy means so much to us."

With a remarkable tally of 305 runs and 14 wickets throughout the tournament, Shadab 'Superstar' Khan is rightfully awarded the player of the tournament title.

Good performance by Shadab but the real player of the tournament was Imad Wasim.

-Big match performance against Multan in virtual knockout
-MOM v Quetta Gladiators in eliminator 1
-MOM v PZ in eliminator 2
-MOM in the PSL final v Multan

That’s 4 clutch/match winning performances in 4 knockout games basically

This is the real player of the tournament performance

Shadab had the best squad under his belt but Imad clicked at the right time for him and his team to make it happen. Shadab had a good tournament himself. A good combined effort won them the cup for the third time.

@Mamoon

Is Mike Hesson the Mikel Arteta of PSL cricket?
It is difficult to make parallels with football managers and cricket coaches, completely different dynamics.

Also, winning trophies in cricket is not the only measure for long-term success as a coach because consistency matters that too across formats.

You have people like Intikhab Alam part of two World Cup winning coaching staff.

But I think Mike Hesson deserves more recognition for the work that he did with New Zealand. New Zealand saw a clear shift in culture and mentality during his coaching tenure and they are still riding on that momentum.

New Zealand cricket pre and post Mike Hesson are not the same. I know that some would say that it had to do with the way McCullum led the team but we have to understand that it was Mike Hesson who convinced New Zealand cricket board to replace Ross Taylor as captain.

It was quite a cold move at the time and he received backlash for it but it showed that he had the chops to take tough decisions.

It might be McCullum’s aggressive brand of cricket that helped New Zealand level up, but we have to understand that a cricket coach is an enabler. He saw that McCullum would be a better leader for New Zealand than Ross Taylor.

I don’t know if he is in the running as Pakistan coach or if he would be willing to do it but he is definitely worth an option exploring. He can’t be worse than that fraud Mickey who is a yes man.

With Mike, you can foresee him letting PCB know in clear terms that for example, a shockingly bad player like Masood cannot continue as Test skipper.

Pakistan needs a coach who can bring his own personality and ideas and not just to do the popular or the politically correct thing.

Shadab with his well-earned prize. He led his team well throughout the PSL. Certainly making a strong case for his comeback to the national team.

It took Mike Hesson to make the best pre draft trade to make this happen. The additions of Imad and Naseem were vital.
Was it Mike hesson or Rehan ul haq.

Also, the trade wasnt really a good one.

For this trade they had to move abrar away to get Imad for the spinners option. The trade will come back to bite us like the Iftikhar and azam trade has many times.

Abrar was in a lower category, which meant we could had utilized abrar for 3-4 more seasons as a spinner. And once quetta got abrar, along with akeal hossain, there teams spin bowling became the most threatening.

Imad is platinum, shadab and maybe naseem will also stay platinum. All these guys cannot be retained and there will be some movement again in the next draft.

The trade messed the team up for the longer run

Nope. Player of the tournament is given to guy keeping inview of all the games. You cant just select the games you like.

Remember, to be in the play offs you need to win the league games, so lets not pretend those league games were not important, winning thos egames is the reason why we did not end up like kk and lahore

Also, one thing i will add, yes Shadab Khan won, but we did not really win because of his captaincy. If it werent for Imad, we were done and would had been out of the tournament during the first play off game which has been the story of Shadab khan.

He was a poor captain.

First of, when Imad and Faheem were both playing poorly why was Shadab giving them every game. Imad could had been rested earlier in the tournament and been given more games during karachi leg. Alsp when everyone knows faheem is not gonna offer anything eith the ball or bat, why go with him in every game? We had Qasim Akram, he could had played a few games.

Ok give faheem games in pindi, but what was the point of giving him every game to play?

Than another problem with Shadab khan is that he does not know how to develop a player. There were games where Hunain was only in the playing 11 just to fulfill the youth player qouta and he would not give him an over.

You need to delevelop youngsters because in future you might get games where they would be required to do something.

If you did not want to play hunain, than might aswell add a junior batter and get a few runs.

The better captain was obviously Rizwan while Shadab has not learned from his mistakes.

Had imad not saved Isb during the last 4 games, isb would had been out and it would had all been cause of shadabs poor captaincy. The guy fluked a trophy in his favor.

I am a united fan, but i know for a fact that shadab is a terrible captain and winning this trophy does not change that fact. Even Lq winning the trophy did not make Shaheen a good captain either.

The games I like? They were all knockout games in a tournament

4 in a row for his team in knockouts

He is the real Player of the tournament. Even Shadab would acknowledge this. Babar didn’t win the Batsman of the tournament award even though he had 150+ more runs than Usman Khan
