Shane Warne has backed England, Australia, India and West Indies to reach the knockout stages of the World Cup. Nine of the ten teams competing at this World Cup have already got their campaigns underway, with India – set to play West Indies on Wednesday – the only side yet to step onto the field. England, Windies, New Zealand, Australia and Bangladesh all recorded wins first time out, but hosts and pre-tournament favourites England were beaten by Pakistan on Monday.

South Africa, meanwhile, are already facing an uphill battle to finish in the top-four after losing both of their opening two matches, to England and Bangladesh.

Warne, speaking before England’s 14-run defeat to Pakistan at Trent Bridge, said: ‘England look like clear favourites and will be very hard to touch in this World Cup. ‘India and Australia are the only two teams that come close to them on a regular basis really. West Indies will sneak in. It will be England, India, Australia and West Indies [in the semi-finals].’

Asked who he believes will emerge as the stars of the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Warne added: ‘I have tipped David Warner to be the Player of the Tournament. ‘He’s got so much to prove and he looked good the other day [in Australia’s win over Afghanistan].

‘Pat Cummins has taken his game to another level and Jos Buttler, who doesn’t love watching him play? And you can’t forget about Andre Russell.’ England made a fine start to their World Cup campaign by beating South Africa but were surprisingly beaten by Pakistan in the second outing.

Joe Root, one of two England centurions against Pakistan, said: ‘We did a lot of hard work to rebuild and get ourselves in a position to win the game so I was bitterly disappointed to get out. ‘The most important thing now for us as a group is not to panic. We know what works for us as a formula, and as a team, but other sides are allowed to play well and we’ve got to make sure we learn quickly and bounce back.’

Could England somehow be stopped from reaching semis

They lost to Pakistan.

Still odds on favourites to recover from the defeat and go to semis with 8 wins but funny things can happen!

Aussies and India are well ‘capable’ of dishing two more defeats to them.

Then eyes are on either of NZ and West Indies and it could well go down to NRR for them.

South Africa were similarly strong and favourites in 2003 remember.

Other teams like India, Aus and NZ are also capable of defeating them. Having already lost one they pressure will be on them. Yes they can be stopped no doubt about it.

I think PAK have just demonstrated that ENG can be stopped before the semis.

I think every team will have to claw their way into the semis. I can’t see a smooth ride for anyone.

I thought England would be the only team who would breeze into the semis. Now I feel they will find some resistance.

But they will make it :)

England won't reach semis. I have said this before wc started. They have no bowling.

England, Australia and New Zealand are sure shot.

India, Pakistan and WI will fight for the 4th semi slot.

I'm surprised at how bouncy the pitches have been in this World Cup. I haven't seen bounce like this in England in years.

West Indies therefore have a great chance of reaching SFs with their tall quicks.

I agree, I think it may be down to the weather cooling down and plenty of the venues receiving rain before the matches have made the pitches less dry. Also, the ICC have clearly used pitches with a slight bit more grass than usual in England.

In terms of the windies, I think their fast bowling offers them a great chance but I don't think they can beat England, India or Australia, meaning their path to the world cup has to rely on beating the remaining 4 teams (having already beaten Pak)...if Pakistan manage the same feat then it becomes a very tight affair.

England are still the favs to win it all.

Aus, India and WI all have a decent chance too after England. Australia is also loaded with fire power in all departments. India and WI have some weaknesses. NZ is another team that can come out of no where.

People need to stop giving NZ the luxury of being favourites for the semis, they're not invincible and can be beaten by the likes of India, Pak, Aus and Eng. They were fantastic in the 2015 WC but again they're just as beatable as any other team. Too soon to say that NZ are going to make the semis, this one will be tight.

Even after we won against england, i think warne is right. It will be these four. We just don't have the game & competency in the team to match those four. We will collapse again, probably against the three left from those four or against New Zealand.

We are one green pitch & pacey pitch away from airport. That's how i see it. Windies have tall bowlers. So, they extracted more bounce from back of length as commented by sir viv richards in salaam cricket program. It's the pace, of good old windies, which is being seen now.

I dont care about any predictions now, let all teams play at least 4 matches. All the useless predictions are getting wrong.

Ok strike that last comment. NZ batting looks a bit bog standard compared to other fancied teams.

West Indies really are looking a very dangerous team specially on pitches with a bit of bounce. They sure are a force to reckon with in this world cup...

Its impossible to say after a couple of games Its a long tournament and we arent a third the way through the group stages

Theres a lot of factors that could come in into play including the weather Only way to assess is after a couple more games each

England, India, Pakistan and Australia.
New Zealand will lose to Pakistan, Australia, England and India
Windies will lose to NZL, India, England and may even find a way to lose to one of Bangladesh and Afghanistan as they dont seem like they are great players if spin.

they playing SA tomorrow, SA need to win 1 at least, they are not that bad of a side.

i think india, eng, aus and nz will be in semi final.

Now if we manage to win aus then we are back in it at the moment no.

Lets see now..
India beat Australia
Pakistan beat England
Australia will now beat Pakistan
And England will beat India..

Somehow they will all get into the semis. Hooray!

India
Australia
England
Pakistan

I think that’s how the final 4 will look, England will be the only team most likely too defeat India at this stage of the tournament.

Don't rule out NZ. This WI team is playing T20 cricket. They could make a meal of few more matches.

Just because WI ran Aussies close, Warne thinks that they can make semis.

Warne has no clue. Australia and England may not even reach semis.

Biggest win so far is by Pakistan against England and that will make this prediction totally false one
I think tournament is now wide open as every match is important and even net run rate
As well

Sa need to do a favor to us .They should beat w.i today which will be good for us

Lol it wont have any impact to other teams. It will mean RSA will be back in contention and they are more powerful team at least on paper.

losing straight 3 matches and one win will bring them back for semi final spot?lets look at remaining fixtures

1]current nz team is much better than sa and will beat them

2]A much stronger Sa team was beaten by pakistan side in 2015 and in ct 2017 .they have mental block against pakistan

3]Aus will beat them easily due to there superior team .

Out of remaining 6 fixtures they will most probably lose atleast 4 fixtures which mean they will only manage 3 wins out of 9 which does suggest they will be out of worldcup

Australia should have lost 2 games out of 3 by now . . WI completely botched that chase when they were absolutely cruising!

i want india to beat kiwis so they will be over confident while playing pakistan and they will end up losing!!
India tends to get cocky when they win matches.

The game between NZ and India will be washed out, its pouring down at the moment, no chance of play today.

If India beats Kiwis today, they will get cocky and end up losing. If Kiwis beat India, Indians will get demoralised and lose momentum, so Pakistan will still beat India.

If India-Kiwi match washes out, India will be short of match practice and will obviously lose the next match.

In every scenario, India is going to get walloped by Pakistan.

Just like the other 6 times

This was the thought process of Pak supporters in 2003 world cup. For India it was not a must win match. Tendulkar went on to express himself. No team is going to take any game less seriously let alone India taking Pak game less seriously.

LOL! I guess that's the never give up attitude.

Logically we have very little chance vs India.

India in red hot form!

India is a methodical team. They will follow some logical set of rules. Match awareness is one of the key aspect that India has edge over lot of teams. On paper they are no better or worse than any team overall. Best way India can be beaten is by putting up decent score and pressurizing.

4 am now and it is pouring down, it's only 4 degrees, the forecast is not looking good at all it's raining cats and dogs. Been raining all day yesterday and all night tonight, forecast says 99% of rain on the radar it shows no sign of clearing up.
