Jack Leach - England slow left-armer

Jack Leach Update

Jack Leach has symptoms of concussion following his head injury whilst fielding. As per concussion guidelines, he has been withdrawn from this Test.

We will confirm a concussion replacement in due course.

*Concussion replacement update *

Lancashire spinner Matthew Parkinson has been confirmed as Jack Leach’s concussion replacement. He will join the England camp later today and can go straight into the XI.

oooooh, just saw the replays-nasty tumble, hope he recovers quickly and is back in action.

Word is that Jack will miss the second Test as well due to the concussion recovery time protocols.

Smashed to all parts again.

This time by New Zealand at Trent Bridge.

Hard to blame him too much for this.

Poor captaincy to bowl first on a phatta and low quality fast bowling.

He wouldn't get anywhere near the team in most other countries but with Moeen and Rashid chickening out its all England have got.

Über road. First innings. Catch dropped.

He’s been messed about by strange managers making face-fitting Bess first choice. Give him a dry track and he’ll deliver.

Agree.

I would add that as well as being a road, the pitch is also dry and it might break up later on.

“if” England can bat out another 3-4 sessions (lol), then late on the fourth day and on the fifth morning a guy like Leach could really come into the game.

A five wicket haul for Jack Leach at Headingley! Amazing performance!

Five wickets at a traditional spinner’s graveyard of a venue.

His best bowling performance for England.
Hands down.

Has to be said that some of the credit goes to Captain Stokes also, for sticking by his man and backing him throughout.

I am pleased for the guy - he has a big heart.

Michael Bracewell as the NZ spinner has been absolutely tonked. Shows how well Leach bowled

Nicholls c&b Leach! 5 down!

New Zealand are going down like skittles now!

Not a great series for Nicholls.

Leach having a good game here.

A five wicket haul in each innings and a ten-fer in the match!

Well done Jack Leach. Excellent.

Jack Leach: Ten wickets is special

"Great day for the boys," said Leach.

"The way we batted there was unbelievable and great day.

"It was very special here at Headingley, I had good memories from 2019 and first game back here and I enjoyed it.

"I want to be contributing to wins so I am really enjoying working with Stokesy.

"So I say what about mid-on back and he says nope.

"It is really attacking and I am enjoying bowling like that as well.

"Stokesy's confidence in his decisions and in us 11 is like nothing I have ever experienced before."

Always maintained that he is the best long format spinner in England ahead of pretenders like Moeen. England should look to get the best out of him for the next 6 years . No more chopping and changing.

Not as good as Swann.

But Jack is improving.
His best match for England this.

Not as good a bowler, not as good a batter, not as good a catcher, and lacks Swann's tactical acumen too.

But he's a wholehearted trier, liked by the team, liked by the fans for his committed chasing of the ball and of course his 1 not out in support of Stokes' wonder innings in 2019.

He is the best ‘prospect’ in the country probably, still a prospect after 24 matches. There’s a reason Brendan went to Mo because they need to be flexible with their options.

And there are places where England will need two spinners.

And there are places where England will need two spinners.

Even ignoring that, Leach is about 3 runs cheaper then Mo. That is poor for a specialist and he’s not as good a bat, also consider how mismanaged Mo has been as well. Leach is sadly the best prospect we have and Bess is a bit crap to. It’s also a bit sad we need to call Rashid for the leg spin option

I think he’s quite a fragile and needy guy (but crucially not a troublemaker) who lacks self belief & has had quite a few physical and mental health issues, and he needs a lot of mollycoddling and handholding to perform his best. But our man Stokes totally gets this, and is doing it for him. Stokes is already proving himself as quite an adaptable and adept leader of men.

Aye, should have got the armband earlier.

Aye, should have got the armband earlier.

We have seen how supportive and proactive Stokes can be on nights out, he should have been made captain back then, for once now we have a leader who doesn’t instil much fear and the players can see him as one of the lads, this should have a positive impact on the mental fragility of Jack Leach and also allow Zack Crawley to play with more freedom

Happy to see Leach performer, hopefully this closes the door on the mentally weak Moeen and his delusions to stage a comeback in Test cricket.

Leach is less talented for sure but he has guts and heart that Moeen lacks.

Leach is less talented for sure but he has guts and heart that Moeen lacks.

Mo never called it in due to some mental issues, Leach is significantly weaker mentally, he wouldn’t last if he was shuffled in and out constantly and needs constant reassurance to do well.

Moeen has an OBE, as for heart and mental fragility, he isn’t a pathan thief or one who misleads people by assuming the identity of others, that’s what cowards do.

Eligibility criteria for MBEs and OBEs for English cricketers:

1. Must be deeply mediocre
2. Must be mentally weak
3. Must have chickened out of international cricket at least once
4. Must have been pounded in an Ashes series in Australia at least twice

You tick all 4 boxes and you will be rewarded for your services to English cricket.

Jack Leach is only the 3rd bowler to take 5 wicket hauls in each innings of a Test in England. The other 2 bowlers on this short list: Muttiah Muralitharan and Shane Warne.

Spinner Jack Leach says he has "never experienced anything like" playing in England's thrilling new Test era.

Leach took 5-66 on day four of the third Test against New Zealand at Headingley to give him match figures of 10-166, his first 10-wicket haul.

"It is very special to be a part of it," Leach told Sky Sports.

"I've never seen it or felt it this good. Stokesy has confidence in his decisions and also in us as 11 blokes."

Leach, who is the first England spinner to take 10 wickets in a Test since Moeen Ali in 2017, said the approach is changing the way he views the longest format.

"You realise teams I have played in, the way I have thought, a lot of decisions are made around negativity," he said.

"A lot of four or five-day games you give up on the win quite early but [under Stokes and McCullum] it feels like you are always pushing for that win, so there is never really too bad a situation."

Leach has struggled to hold down a place in the Test team in recent years because of illness, the balance of the side and, earlier this month, concussion.

"My biggest thing is having belief in myself and that is what Ben and Baz [McCullum] have helped me with," he said.

Some have taken more that five in each innings though - Laker and Massie spring to mind.

Gets his 100th Test wicket.

Then his 101st.

Than his 102nd.

3 for 8 in this spell.

Superb bowling from Leach.

England spinner Jack Leach said he surpassed his own expectations after getting his 100th test wicket on Saturday, calling it a "special" achievement.

On day two of the second test against Pakistan, Leach dismissed Saud Shakeel to reach the milestone in his 31st test.

The left-armer ended the innings with 4-98, having helped put England in command of the match.

"I just felt like... 100 wickets feels like quite a lot," said Leach after stumps on the second day.

"And it's more than I felt I'll ever achieve."

"I need to remember that. As sportsmen and as people, it's easy to just push on to the next thing and the next thing and the next thing, and nothing's ever enough."

"If you told me that when I was a kid that I’d take 100 wickets, I would have laughed at you," he added.

"So yes, it is special."

Leach has had health struggles during his career, including Crohn's disease, a bowel condition.

"There's been some definite lows along the way, but it does sort of make it all worth it."

England lead the three-test series 1-0, having won the first match in Rawalpindi by 74 runs.

Congrats to Leach has done a god job for england in this series, our batsmen do make decent spinners look world beaters though at same time.

Leach should be looking for more wickets in final inns.

Despite his obvious limitations as a cricketer, through hard graft and mental resilience more than anything Leach is making the spinner’s role in the England Test side his own.

A lot of the credit for this goes to the man-management of Ben Stokes, who has really looked after him and supported him, after Root used to inadvertently expose Leach at the wrong moments in the match.

Stokes seems to have managed all the players well and is getting the best out of them, every player is different and some need extra Guidance and to be given confidence. As was case with white ball re-set england players have freedom to play how they want knowing they will get decent backing and wont be dropped if they fail a few times.

Bowler-captains understand bowlers.

Leach is a good bowler to right handers, but doesn’t always find an appropriate length for left handers.

He does however have a bit of a knack of staying in the game, and his wicket of the leftie just before the Day 3 close was crucial.

<b>"It is amazing to think I have 100 Test wickets” — Jack Leach speaks openly about long term health challenges</b>

[Jack] Leach was diagnosed with Crohn's, a condition that causes inflammation of the digestive system, when he was 14.

On the New Zealand tour three years ago, Leach contracted gastroenteritis, then spent time in hospital with a bout of sepsis caused by his body's reaction.

He later said he was scared to fall asleep because he "might not wake up".

Leach also suffered a fractured skull when fainting in his bathroom in 2015, and has been concussed on the field twice - hit by a bouncer batting for Somerset in 2018, then in England's first Test of the past home summer when diving to make a save on the boundary.

"I didn't think it would have been possible, health-wise more than anything," said Leach.

"There have been lots of challenges along the way. Everyone has their challenges and mine have been out there. That's good because I want to be open and honest."

Leach was playing in his 31st Test this week in Multan, having made his debut against New Zealand in 2018. In Multan, he became the 20th England spinner to reach 100 wickets in Tests.

Leach is the only frontline bowler to have played in all of England's nine Tests since Ben Stokes became captain.

not the most consistent or best bowler but does his job , even in the countries where he got pummeled ( Australia and Pakistan ) he has some crucial 4 fers.

Yes, he has resilience and a big heart.
He doesn’t give up.

One of those guys who is good for morale no doubt. He would have gained a lot of credibility after that miracle charge with Stokes.

4 wickets in the first innings at Multan, 4 wickets in the first innings in Karachi.

He’s currently the top wicket taker in Tests this year across all teams I believe.

Sometimes goes for a few runs but he’s doing a good solid job for England and often posing a threat to batsmen.

Was disappointing to see him being owned by Shan Masood as if he was Brian Lara all of a sudden.

Very painful to watch

Broad: Leach has emerged as a leader for England

England bowler Stuart Broad, speaking to Sky Sports...

"He's had a great year. We've talked how much he's grown as a bowler and a leader throughout Stokesy's captaincy, and he has to take a lot of credit for that personally.

"Stokesy has helped him out with fields, but it looks like he's grown in stature and confidence."

Those three wickets in the morning session for Leach were superb. Turned the game on its head.

He's being smashed all over the park by Adair and McBrine of Ireland.

I really don't get what the big deal is about him.

Maybe saved from humiliation by the Aussies.

England spinner Jack Leach has been ruled of the LV= Insurance Men’s Ashes series with a low back (lumbar) stress fracture.

The 31-year-old Somerset slow-left-armer developed low back symptoms during England’s LV= Insurance Test victory over Ireland on Saturday. A scan on Sunday in London has revealed a stress fracture, which will keep him out of the forthcoming Ashes Test series, which gets underway at Edgbaston on Friday 16 June.

England will announce a replacement for the Ashes series in due course.

Seems like part of the reason was that he was bowling with a serious injury that developed yesterday. That’s his season over.

Might be a blessing in disguise for England though, because whilst Leach does take a decent number of wickets he also gets absolutely tonked on occasion.

Who do they give a go now? Rehan would be a very Stokesy/BazzBall like pick

Options are thin.

Leach was doing a good job, can’t overly criticise a man bowling with a bad back.

Rehan very young. He’s played ten red ball games only. It would be a big risk to feed him to the Aussies. He might do well, but it could go disastrously.

At the moment, in a fairly empty field, I am leaning towards Liam Livingstone. A competent bowler who will significantly beef up the batting.

(There are some rumours of Moeen Ali getting a phone call and being asked to make a one-off series comeback, and with his experience and all-round abilities he’d be the best choice by far, but I’m not sure he would do it.)

Dawson should really be in the conversation. Very experienced, having a good championship season so far (and had a good one last year), capable of being a bit more defensive and just holding down an end if that's what we need and also one of the better fielders on the county circuit to go with it all.

Mo would be in a no win situation, to have to be that guy again, only when needed. There’s more to lose, inevitably, he would be scapegoated. However, England would need someone like him, to be that scapegoat to, rather than risk damaging their future prospects. If am Mo, do I think it’s worth the risk? he is just shy of 3k runs and 200 wickets which are big milestones, plus the idea of signing off with a triumphant Ashes campaign must be alluring. If they really want him, I think Stokes and Brendan could be key.

But personally, I agree with you, Liam is probably the best option, also considering the long term. But I don’t know how hard he works on his leg spin behind the scenes, and it’s a bit much expecting him to take 6-8 wickets in a Test with favourable spin conditions.

Then there’s the safety first option of including another seam option, but this would be defensive imo

Interesting selection.

Bazball have the choice of going;

Dawson- ultra safe pie chucker. One of those defensive picks so bad they backfire because they can't get a wicket and get thrashed once the attack tires.

Rehan- aggressive Bazball pick. talented. is he ready? Possibly get thrashed or possibly get wickets too while doing it.

Liam Livinstone? 43 FC wickets in 65 FC games... as a bowler?

Is Mo retired from red ball?

Slim pickings for England. Better make 'em green!

Stokes has already placed a pre-order this year for flat pitches.

The pitch we saw for the Test against Ireland is how the pitches for the Ashes are planned to look.

England need a spinner.

Moeen has had the call and now we await his reply.

English spinner is as perfect as a well oiled machine and then we have our spinners too who play less and get injured more. Why Pakistan spinner and players have so poor fitness level and are prone to injuries? Why these issues only occur to Pak side but not others?

England's bowling coach Jeetan Patel speaking on TNT Sports:

Patel: Leach has bumped his knee

"A tough day. The reality is the guys put on a fantastic performance. They batted well and formed some great partnerships. We're proud of the fact we keep coming and creating opportunities.

"Leach would have bowled more overs but he bumped his knee. We have to be careful with how we manage him. Rehan created some flair around the game and so did Root. Hartley has created opportunities and taken wickets. His time will come.

"Hartley started with a great wicket and there was chat about how we were going to get into the day.

"The only thing that matters is the three wickets, once we bowl them out. There are still positives."

I kinda suspected he was not totally fit. Why are they having him half fit for a long tour like this.

Leach has been a decent servant to England particularly during the Stokes captaincy, but he’s becoming very injury prone, and could easily be shunted out of the side this summer if Hartley, who looks a much better batsman and at least a good a bowler as him, continues his impressive start.

There’s also the issue with Leach that he gets the occasional battering from the likes of Warner/Pant etc and it seems to affect him a lot mentally, with the captain having to do a lot of babysitting and mummying to bring him back round to form. In Test cricket, a low level of resilience like that is not sustainable in the long term.

England’s frontline spinner, who sustained injury during the first Test of the ongoing World Test Championship series against India, revealed that he is scheduled for surgery on his left knee.
Jack Leach sustained the injury during Day 1 of the series opener in Hyderabad during India's batting innings. He fell on the outfield and ended up jarring his left knee.

The spinner soldiered on despite the pain and bowled a total of 36 overs in the entire match in short spells, claiming two wickets in England’s 28-run victory. After the completion of the first Test, he was subsequently ruled out for the rest of the series.

In a recent interview with BBC Radio 5 Live on Saturday, 24 February, Leach disclosed the extent of his injury and the need for surgery.

"I'm going to have an operation to get the rest of the swelling out because it's not budging," Leach revealed. "I obviously knocked it a few times throughout that game and it has just created a long period of recovery. I need to get the operation done and then hopefully I can get back to playing cricket.

“I'd love to have a run of playing cricket and getting into a bit of a rhythm again and hopefully that can happen again once I've got this sorted."

Leach, who has accounted for 126 wickets in his 36 Test appearances so far, also missed last summer’s Ashes series due to a stress fracture of the back.

In his absence, England relied on the likes of Tom Hartley, Rehan Ahmed, and Shoaib Bashir to lead their spin bowling attack in the India series. However, they dealt with another blow after young spinner, Ahmed, had to return home due to an urgent family matter ahead of the fourth Test.

India are leading the five-match series 2-1, with the fourth Test ongoing and growing increasingly exciting in Ranchi.

England spinner Leach extends Somerset contract

England spinner Jack Leach has signed a new two-year contract with Somerset.

The 33-year-old has 36 Test caps and has taken 126 wickets for his country at an average of 34.40.

Leach has spent his entire career at Somerset, having been born and raised in Taunton.

He has made 162 appearances across first class, List A and T20 formats, taking 466 wickets.

"Somerset is home and I feel very lucky to continue to represent the club I love," he told the club's website., external

"The support I've had from the club and the fans over the last 12 months whilst out injured has meant so much and I look forward to repaying that faith with performances on the pitch."

Somerset are third in the County Championship Division One table.

‘I feel I am getting back to my best’ – Jack Leach targets England’s winter tour

Jack Leach is determined to play for England again and has targeted a place on the winter tour to Pakistan after he inspired Somerset to a crushing 293-run victory over Durham.

Leach claimed match figures of 12 for 174, with seven scalps in the second innings helping bowl out Durham for 126 on day four of the Vitality County Championship Division One match at Taunton.

The 33-year-old has not featured for England since January after he was overlooked this summer in favour of Somerset team-mate Shoaib Bashir, but has not given up hope of forcing his way back into international reckoning.

“I totally understand the reason why ‘Bash’ has been selected. I rate him really highly and think he is already a very good bowler with a lot of promise for the future,” Leach told reporters at Taunton.

“We have worked together a lot and I am very proud of him and want to see him flourish but there is a tour to Pakistan coming up and if England need me, I am more than happy to go.

“I would imagine they will take more than one spinner and I feel I am getting back to my best after almost a year with niggles that have taken some overcoming.

“You don’t always realise how hard it is to come back from injuries. Long spells like I have had against Durham certainly help in that respect.

“It would be nice if both Shoaib and myself could make the Pakistan tour and there is no reason why that can’t happen.

“I don’t want to get my hopes up, but I am as determined as I ever have been to play for England.

“In the meantime, I want to do all I can to help Somerset win the Championship. We are all excited at the prospect of facing Surrey at Taunton next as one of three hugely important games.”

Jack Leach in his last two County Championship games:

12-174 against Durham
9-142 against Surrey

In excellent form ahead of his return to England’s Test squad

Sky Sports' Michael Atherton on Jack Leach:

"He was England's best spinner in the first Test, he certainly out-bowled Shoaib Bashir.

"He is the more experienced spinner and until the last 18 months or so, he has been England's first-choice spinner.

"It was no surprise to see Leach given first dibs today, albeit Bashir come on in the very next over...

"Leach picked up the two wickets... the one that picked up Abdullah Shafique was a pretty good ball, but the second one was a poor shot from Shan Masood."

Leach had fears over England career after omission

Spinner Jack Leach feared his international career may have been over when he was left out of the England team during the home summer.

The left-armer was overlooked in favour of Shoaib Bashir but has returned for the series in Pakistan to form a spin tandem with his Somerset team-mate.

The 33-year-old is the leading wicket-taker on either side with 14 victims going into the series decider in Rawalpindi from Thursday.

"After a long time out with injury, I felt maybe that might be it, even though I knew this tour was the other side of the summer," Leach told BBC Sport.

"At that point it was very much about me getting back to my best and enjoying my cricket, and being injury-free for a good amount of time."

Leach lost his place after being injured on the tour of India earlier this year, when Bashir emerged on the international scene.

Leach suffered a leg injury in the first Test and missed the rest of the series. That was his first Test back after sitting out the home Ashes in the summer of 2023 with a stress fracture in his back.
