Jahangir Tareen decides to establish new political party - Istehkam-e-Pakistan

Lawmakers supporting estranged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen on Saturday warned the federal government of ‘moving forward’ if justice was not delivered in the ongoing sugar scandal cases.

Tareen along with son Ali Tareen, PTI’s MNAs and MPAs reached Lahore banking court to attend their bail proceedings which later the court extended to May 3.

Speaking to the media MPA Raja Riaz said that they appeal to the prime minister for justice under the umbrella of PTI. We believe that Tareen is being humiliated through such moves, he added.

“Do not take this further,” Riaz said adding that 40 members of both houses of the Parliament were demanding justice from the premier.

On this occasion, MPA Ishaq Khan Khakwani said that today they were not seeking any relief and neither are they ‘blackmailing’ the government, but asking for more time to collect material which they would bring forward in response to the allegations.

Tareen said he had earned money in the proper manner and added he did not earn money in politics.
“He was being humiliated merely to corner him in those FIRs in which not even a single word about sugar scam has been mentioned”, he said.

“No allegation has been levelled on him in said FIRs about increasing sugar prices", but even then this matter is being attributed to him merely for the vested interests, he said.

“I will fight the legal cases and will prove my innocence in courts”, Tareen said. On a query, he said he had not visited PM Imran’s office and he does not know who is hatching conspiracies against him.

Among the MNAs and MPAs that accompanied Tareen during his appearance were Raja Riaz, Sami Gilani, Mubeen Alam, Khawaja Shiraz, Noman Langarial, Ajmal Cheema, Nazir Chauhan, Aslam Bharwana, Khurram Leghari, Umar Aftab Dahlon, Zawar Baloch, Nazir Baloch, Lala Tahir Randhawa, Abdul Hai Dasti, Faisal Jabwana, Rafaqat Gilani, Amir Muhammad Khan, Aun Chaudhry and Imran Shah.

On April 12, The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) sought record from Jahangir Tareen regarding his farmlands, machinery and overseas properties.

The investigation agency has given him till April 13 to file the document.

According to Express, the FIA sent an eight-point questionnaire to the estranged PTI leader in which he was directed to provide answers regarding the property, which the investigative body had sought from August 2020.

The FIA said Tareen can submit the answers by appearing in person or through the company secretary. Tareen promised to answer these questions on April 16.

On April 10, it was reported that Tareen had hosted a number of federal and provincial lawmakers at a dinner at his residence in Lahore.

PTI leaders expressed the former secretary-general of the party was not a threat to the government and the participation of the MNAs and the MPAs in the dinner was “no big deal”.

LAHORE: PTI leader Jahangir Tareen says he has nothing to do with the rising price of sugar or the sugar mafia.

Talking to media outside a banking court in Lahore, where Tareen and his son Ali Tareen were granted an extension in interim bail till May 3, Tareen said there is constant talk of the sugar mafia and the price of sugar going up.

"I have nothing to do with the increase sugar price or the sugar mafia. No one said anything about a sugar case against Jahangir Tareen," he said.

He called for people to read the three FIRs against him, saying there is no mention of sugar in any of them or any allegation.

"All three FIRs did not mention the rise in the price of sugar, but the FIRs picked up things relating to my business from eight to 10 years ago," Tareen said.

Tareen said a a fictional story has been fabricated against him. "My documentation is clear and transparent. I pay my income tax every year. Mine and my family's accounts are with the income tax people," he said.

"Ask any businessman," the PTI leader said confidently, explaining that they [businessmen] would say that if Jahangir Tareen is not the most transparent, then who is?

Tareen repeated that an attempt is being made to tarnish his reputation.

He said everyone will find out the truth.

"I have not even been accused in any sugar-related case in a year-and-a-half," he said, adding that he is present in court to fight the cases against him.

He said he did not know who is "doing this" to him, but "someone is".

The PTI leader further said that he has not been to the Prime Minister House for more than a year-and-a-half.

Jahangir, Ali Tareen get extension in interim bail
A banking court in Lahore extended till May 3 the interim bail of Tareen and his son Ali Tareen in a money laundering case on Saturday.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) sent notices to the father and son on April 14 and summoned the record of all businesses of the PTI leader, including dairy farms.

His lawyer, however, argued that it was not possible to submit all record on a day’s notice, particularly due to the law and order situation.

He told the court that Jahangir Tareen and Ali Tareen will appear before the investigation agency on April 19. The court adjourned the hearing till May 3.

The father-son duo have been accused of money laundering and fraud, with one of the case's registered by the FIA amounting to alleged fraud of Rs3.14 billion.

An FIR states that Jahangir allegedly transferred illegal shares worth billions of rupees to Farooqi Pulp Mills Limited (FPML), which is owned by his son and close relatives.

It says the transfers, especially after 2011-12, were "patently fraudulent investments which ultimately translated into personal gains" for Jahangir's family. Some Rs3 billion were invested and laundered through the same factory.

Sugar crisis of 2020 and its investigation report
Last year, PM Imran Khan had tasked the FIA to investigate the sugar crisis throughout the country and find out who benefited from it.

A report by the FIA released last year had claimed that top PTI members were among those who gained from the recent sugar crisis in the country.

Among the people named in the FIA report were Jahangir Tareen and a brother of the then Minister for National Food Security Khusro Bakhtiar.

Tareen was said by the report to have benefited the most from the sugar crisis followed by Bakhtiar's brother.

As the gulf between the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s estranged leader Jahangir Khan Tareen and his once close friend and PTI chairman Imran Khan widens over the ongoing sugar scam probe, some of the MNAs and MPAs in Mr Tareen’s camp on Saturday proposed resigning from the assemblies.

However, the idea floated during a meeting held at Mr Tareen’s residence was immediately shot down by a majority of the legislators.

According to sources, the few among the legislators, who were in favour of tendering resignations, had floated the idea if Prime Minister Khan refused to give the Tareen-led group an audience to thrash out the “injustices” being committed against the estranged leader.

Some 30 party parliamentarians accompanied Mr Tareen to the special court hearing banking offences case and returned to his residence with him. At the gathering held at Mr Tareen’s residence, the PTI parliamentarians decided to strengthen their narrative to secure a meeting with Mr Khan where they could explain that Mr Tareen was being victimised at the behest of non-elected people.

As many as PTI’s 31 MNAs and MPAs have signed the request letter sent to the prime minister for the meeting and are waiting for the latter’s response.

On Friday, Prime Minister Khan while talking to reporters in Sargodha said he was ready to meet and listen to the grievances (about Mr Tareen) of party’s MNAs and MPAs, but in the same breath added that sugar price was increased by Rs26 per kilogram which robbed the nation of Rs130 billion. Since it was the government’s job to protect the interests of people, he said, the government conducted an inquiry through the FIA that revealed that a cartel of sugar mills was fleecing the masses and evading taxes.

“We can still listen to the PTI MNAs and MPAs’ grievances but law of the land will be upheld at any cost,” the prime minister asserted.

Meanwhile, the parliamentarians showing solidarity with Mr Tareen suggested they needed to increase their strength to convey a strong message to the government. It is reliably learnt that Mr Tareen has decided to hold an iftar dinner for the party lawmakers on his next appearance at the sessions court on April 22.

In a significant move to increase his political connections among the party parliamentarians, Mr Tareen went to the residence of PTI MPA Khurram Ijaz Chattha in Muridke and offered his condolences on the death of Mr Chattha’s paternal uncle. He also met MPA Umer Aftab Dhilon, whose maternal uncle recently passed away. Mr Tareen was accompanied by Punjab Agriculture Minister Malik Nauman Ahmad Langrial, Adviser to the Chief Minister Faisal Hayat Jabwana and MPAs Tahir Randhawa and Zawar Warraich.

On the other hand, Punjab Governor Chaudhry Sarwar told media persons that Mr Tareen was facing cases in courts and his friends in party were accompanying him only to express their sympathies and solidarity. When senior minister Abdul Aleem Khan was facing cases in the NAB and courts, his sympathisers also used to go with him, he said.

“All politicians have their relationships within the party and they do stand by them and express their solidarity in trying times. Things will settle down soon,” he said.

Earlier, Jahangir Tareen said the cases against him did not even carry the allegations of having any link to sugar ‘mafia’ or a role in the increasing price of the commodity but he had been subjected to a targeted campaign of character assassination.

He was speaking to reporters outside the judicial complex after attending hearing of his pre-arrest bail in one of the FIRs before a special court for banking offences. His son Ali Tareen also appeared before the court.

At least 29 members of the National and Punjab assemblies belonging to the government and advisers to the chief minister accompanied Mr Tareen to the court.

Asked about those involved in the campaign against him, the sugar mogul said he would expose the hands behind the malicious campaign against him. He said the business community knew that he was a clean and reputable businessman.

“I was a farmer and then a businessman well before joining politics,” he said, dispelling an impression that he established his business after coming into politics.

Raja Riaz, an MNA from Faisalabad, demanded justice from Prime Minister Imran Khan for Tareen. He said they had been showing grace and were still standing under the flag of the PTI. He claimed that Mr Tareen had been given unfair treatment.

Mr Riaz threatened the prime minister to change his approach or they would be forced to take a step on their own. “We are making last humble request in the ‘Riasat-i-Madina’ that we want nothing but justice,” he said.

Earlier, the court extended the interim pre-arrest bails of Mr Tareen and his son till May 3.

Mr Tareen’s counsel Salman Safdar complained to the court that the FIA sent summons to his client at the eleventh hour. He said last time the agency summoned Tareen and his son on one-day notice.

An official of the FIA told the court that the suspects had not furnished the required data.

Tareen’s counsel said a reply would be submitted to the agency by Monday.

LAHORE: Estranged PTI leader Jahangir Tareen said on Thursday that his group will only meet Prime Minister Imran Khan and accused the ruling party of witch-hunting.

“When I stood with Imran Khan, PML-N investigated my business and sent me notices,” said Tareen while speaking to the media outside a sessions court in the provincial capital. He added that he is still facing the notices sent to him during the PML-N’s tenure.

“But what they [PTI government] did was not even done by the PML-N, a civil case has been turned into a criminal one,” said Tareen.

The PTI leader said that the case against him was made up and not related to the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).

He claimed that the cases against him were related to the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and the Security and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

To a question about a committee formed to address his grievances, Tareen said that he had heard about it on TV. He added that no one has contacted him neither will his group meet any committee.

“I have said that we will not meet any committee, we will only meet Prime Minister Imran Khan,” said Tareen.

A reporter had also asked the PTI stalwart about a meeting between one of his supporters with Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar.

“All friends who are called for a meeting with the CM, first ask me and take advice from the group and then go,” Tareen responded to the question.

Before the media talk, Tareen and his son Ali appeared before a sessions court for a hearing.

During the hearing, Jahangir Tareen’s lawyer told the judge that his clients were cooperating in the investigation.

He added that his clients were also providing proof to the investigating authorities in the money laundering allegations.

“We hope that we would be exonerated,” said Tareen’s lawyer. He added that they are hopeful that the FIA would backtrack on their allegations.

Meanwhile, the FIA’s investigation officer told the court that they were investigating all the allegations and shared the available record with the court.

Upon hearing this, the court reviewed the file and gave it back to the FIA for further investigation.

“Where is the complete inquiry report? It should be presented right now,” said the judge.

The investigation officer told the judge that the inquiry report is confidential.

The judge after hearing this, extended the bail of the two till May 3 and ordered the FIA to present the complete report in the next hearing before adjourning the case.

Prime Minister Imran Khan has agreed to meet and listen to the reservations of PTI lawmakers who have come out in support of estranged party leader Jahangir Tareen, sources said Monday.

The premier, according to sources, is scheduled to meet at least 30 PTI lawmakers tomorrow. The party's MPAs and MNAs, who are close to the estranged leader, will present Tareen's case to the prime minister, confirmed sources.

lawmakers backing Tareen refused to hold a meeting with a committee formed by the premier to hold talks with them, insisting they wanted the prime minister himself to listen to their reservations.

"Imran Khan is our captain, and we will present our grievances only in front of him," the lawmakers had said, according to sources.

PTI lawmakers propose quitting assemblies

Earlier, PTI lawmakers had offered to quit the assemblies in support of Tareen, during a meeting held at his Lahore residence.

Sources privy to the meeting informed Geo News that more than 30 members of both the national and provincial assemblies attended the huddle and discussed the roadmap ahead for the party, with a majority of them offering to resign.

According to the sources, the offer of resignations was not unanimously agreed upon by all lawmakers as a measure suited for the time being.

The lawmakers were, however, of the opinion that if "injustices" against Tareen continue, then the option of resignations from the assemblies must be exercised.

The sources said that the lawmakers also decided to contact others from the party.

In an interesting development, the government has changed the head of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) led joint investigation team (JIT) probing into a sugar crisis.

The government on Monday notified that the FIA Lahore Director Dr Muhammad Rizwan has been replaced with Additional Director Abu Bakar Khuda Baksh as an inquiry officer.

Dr Rizwan had not only supervised the crackdown against the sugar mafia responsible for shortage of the commodity but also carried out investigations against PTI disgruntled leader Jahangir Tareen and PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif.

The officer was not only personally overseeing registration of cases against influential sugar mills owners and speculators but was also analyzing all the data and evidence received from the State Bank of Pakistan, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and other departments.

According to sources, the JIT led by Dr Rizwan had been threatened as well as offered bribes but it had continued its crackdown against the sugar mafia and the process of collection of evidence.

The sources said the JIT has already completed 70% of its work. They said Dr Rizwan will continue to be a part of the JIT but not as its head.

They said this development may have a link with a possible rapprochement between Premier Imran Khan and Tareen. When contacted, Dr Rizwan refused to comment. The FIA spokesperson also did not speak on the development.

LAHORE: Apparently giving in to the demand of over 30 lawmakers backing the estranged leader of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Jahangir Khan Tareen group, the government on Monday removed the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officer heading investigation against Mr Tareen and his son in the sugar scam.

The significant development took place in the backdrop of a likely meeting of the ‘rebel’ PTI lawmakers with Prime Minister Imran Khan in Islamabad on Tuesday (today).

“The sugar scam inquiry team head FIA Director Lahore Mohammad Rizwan has been removed from the investigation with immediate effect,” a source in the information ministry told Dawn on Monday. He said Mr Rizwan got the marching order, adding that it was the main demand of former PTI secretary general Jahan*gir Tareen and the lawmakers who are with him.

It is yet to be confirmed whether Mr Rizwan has also been transferred from FIA. Interestingly, Mr Rizwan not only booked Tareen and his son Ali but also registered FIR against PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz in Rs5 billion money laundering and fraud charges in the sugar scam.

Mr Rizwan had also laid hand on the sugar mills of power federal minister from South Punjab Khusro Bakhtiar and his family members and two sugar mills of two media houses. The FIA investigators under Mr Rizwan had detected Rs110 billion earning by the sugar mafia during the last one year through ‘speculative pricing’. The FIA during the course of inquiry against the sugar mafia said: “It has transpired that sugar industry barons, sugar-brokers & their satta-agents (speculative pricing players), in active connivance with sugar-mills, have transformed into a clandestine sugar satta-mafia and are operating in a collusive but secret-mode, especially through electronic means/ WhatsApp groups to dishonestly and fraudulently maneuver, manipulate and artificially hike sugar prices, amidst hoax of impending sugar-stocks shortages (while sugar-stocks are lying ‘unsold’ or ‘sold/un-lifted’ in mills & godowns and demand-supply gap is artificial)”.

The inquiry reveals “the satta-mafia had already fraudulently ramped-up the (speculative) ex-mill price by Rs20/kg in last one year (from Rs70/kg on Feb 11, 2020 to Rs90 per kg on March 21, 2021; they are now conspiring to pump it upwards to Rs110 per kg in Ramzan.”

Mr Tareen and his son have been on bail till May 3 in the FIA cases.

Meanwhile the Tareen camp’s active leader Malik Nauman Ahmad Langrial said the prime minister had finally accepted the request of the parliamentarians and called all those 31 who had signed the (request) letter.

“We see this meeting as an ice-melting event and do hope that all of their concerns that Mr Tareen should not be victimised through the state institutions is given serious consideration,” he said.

Mr Tareen’s sympathisers in the Punjab and National Assembly had emerged after he was booked in different cases and summoned to appear before the banking and sessions courts. Tareen camp’s outspoken MNA Raja Riaz had demanded that the prime minister should give them time so that they could explain him their concerns as they believed that Mr Tareen was being victimised.

Mr Riaz had threatened the prime minister to change his approach or they would be forced to take a step on their own. “We are making last humble request in the ‘Riasat-i-Madina’ that we want nothing but justice,” he had said.

Mr Tareen, the sugar mogul, claimed that allegations in the FIRs lodged against him were not criminal in nature and fell within the jurisdiction of Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan. He said all of his businesses had been inspected during the previous PML-N government and nothing wrong had been detected by investigators.

https://www.dawn.com/news/1620772/pm-to-monitor-case-against-tareen-not-to-influence-fia

Prime Minister Imran Khan on Tuesday categorically said the Federal Investi*gation Agency (FIA) would not be influenced to give relief to the disgruntled leader of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), Jahangir Tareen, in the sugar scam probe but he would personally look into the matter to avoid any political victimisation in the case.

He was talking to a delegation of some pro-Tareen lawmakers who called on him. Punjab Governor Chaudhry Mohammad Sarwar was also present in the meeting.

The head of the MNAs’ delegation, Raja Riaz, told media after attending the meeting that Prime Minister Khan had assured them that he would personally look into the case and ensure that no injustice was meted out to anyone.

“We have full confidence that the prime minister will not do injustice to anyone,” he said.

Interestingly, the prime minister formed a one-man committee comprising his confidant, Senator Syed Ali Zafar, to ascertain whether the delegation’s concerns that some people in the government and the PTI were politically victimising Jahangir Tareen were genuine. The decision to form the committee was made a day after media reports claimed the government had changed FIA’s sugar inquiry chief.

According to media reports, the sugar scam inquiry team’s head FIA Director for Lahore Mohammad Riz*wan was removed from the investigation with immediate effect.

It may be mentioned here that Mr Rizwan’s removal was the main demand of the former PTI secretary general Jehangir Tareen and the lawmakers supporting him.

Information Minister Fawad Hussain Chaudhry confirmed that the prime minister had decided not to influence the FIA inquiry against Tareen and other sugar barons and that the case would be decided on merit.

“During the meeting, the prime minister was of the view that a party (PTI) formed in the name of justice could not allow two types of justice — one for the poor and the other for wealthy people,” he added.

“The prime minister said the FIA’s inquiry into the sugar scam would not be influenced at any cost. However, concerns of the MNAs will be addressed and it will be ensured that no one politically victimises Mr Tareen,” the minister quoted the prime minister as saying.

He said Mr Khan tasked Senator Ali Zafar to present a report to him, but no timeframe was given to the committee.

When asked whether there was a possibility of the MNAs supporting Tareen joining another political party, especially Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), the minister said they would remain part of the ruling PTI.

The parliamentarians supporting Tareen have accused Adviser to the Prime Minister on Accountability Shahzad Akbar of initiating undue action against Tareen and his son Ali Tareen by freezing their over two dozen bank accounts during the sugar scam investigations.

In a recent press conference, Jehangir Tareen had said that he was ready to face any inquiry but to drag his son into the case was unjustified.

The sugar baron had claimed the PML-N had also investigated his businesses during its tenure but even it had not turned a civil case into a criminal one against him.

The bail of both Jehangir Tareen and his son had already been extended till May by an additional sessions judge Lahore. Extending their interim bail, the court ordered the FIA to complete its investigation as soon as possible and submit the report.

According to their lawyer, there are three FIRs against Tareen and his son while the FIA had registered only two cases after a period of four-and-a-half months.

According to the FIRs dated March 22, two separate cases were registered under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating of public shareholders) and 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code (PPC), read with sections 3/4 of the Anti-Money Laundering Act, against Tareen and his son.

The FIA, in the first FIR, had stated that Tareen had fraudulently misappropriated the shareholders’ money after his company, JDW Group, transferred Rs3.14 billion to an associated private company identified as Farooqi Pulp Private Limited.

The FIR had stated that the private company was owned by his sons and close relatives. Additionally, it had said that Tareen, his son and another family member had purchased US dollars from the open market in Lahore in a “structured manner”.

The second FIR had said that “voluminous withdrawals amounting to at least Rs2.2 billion were fraudulently and dishonestly made through a trusted cash rider”, and large amounts were deposited into the personal and business accounts of Tareen and his family members.

On the other hand, the opposition, especially PML-N leaders Rana Sanaullah and Talal Chaudhry, in TV shows blamed the government and Prime Minister Khan for using Mr Tareen’s money to run party matters and even making him head of the task force on agriculture.

ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan will receive a fact-finding report next week on whether Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) is subjecting PTI leader Jahangir Tareen to fair, unbiased, and non-discriminatory treatment in the cases registered against him, The News reported on Sunday.

The report will be presented by Senator Syed Ali Zafar.

Initially, the investigations had been launched against Tareen in the light of the findings and recommendations of the Sugar Commission prepared by the FIA.

'Not a single case relating to the sugar scandal'
However, according to Tareen and his supporters, not a single case relating to the sugar scandal had been registered by the FIA or any other agency.

They said that the word ‘sugar’ doesn’t even occur in the three FIRs lodged by the FIA against Tareen and his son, Ali. Most of the cases pertain to money laundering.

An official said that once an FIR was lodged under the FIA law, the investigation has to be conducted by its officers strictly according to the FIA Act, Pakistan Penal Code, anti-money laundering law, Criminal Procedure Code, and Police Act.

He said that none of these laws gives any role to the prime minister, interior minister, advisor on the interior, MPs, or anyone nominated by the premier to ascertain facts about the probe. The FIA officers are duty-bound to inquire into the matter as per the law and the facts of the case on merit, he said.

Tareen alleges that the cases against him and his associates have been ‘directed’ from Islamabad.

He claims that the FIRs registered against him were provided to the FIA on a USB and were not the result of an independent inquiry by FIA officials.

'Both sides heard extensively'

Maintaining that both sides have been heard extensively, Zafar said that he has gone through the relevant documents provided by the parties.

He added: “I have completed the task assigned by the prime minister and will now start writing my report."

He said he had held multiple meetings with the legal and financial teams of Tareen, adding that the FIA presented its own side of the story about the investigations being conducted by it.

Zafar refused to divulge his initial assessment of whether or not Tareen has received a fair deal from the FIA and the other government agencies looking into his businesses, especially those related to sugar.

The senator’s mandate did not include a review of the role of the prime minister’s close aide on accountability Shahzad Akbar in the investigations being carried out by the FIA against Tareen, but his job was to ascertain the facts in order to remove the reservations publicly expressed by Tareen and his supporters.

Tareen puts pressure on government

As the FIA probe gained momentum, Tareen gathered more than 30 federal and Punjab lawmakers of the ruling PTI in his support to exert pressure on the government to first get the investigations slowed down and ultimately scrapped.

These legislators also met the prime minister to get some relief for Tareen and said after the session that their demands had been accepted.

They said Imran Khan told them that he would personally supervise the FIA investigation into the sugar scam and see no injustice was done to anybody.

A day before this meeting, the role of senior police officer Muhammad Rizwan, who was heading the FIA probe against Tareen, was radically changed.

He was removed as the head of the team and made subordinate to another senior official, Abu Bakar Khuda Bakhsh. Tareen had openly spoken against Muhammad Rizwan and had demanded he be sidelined.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government has faced another setback as estranged party leader Jahangir Tareen launched a group of like-minded lawmakers in the National Assembly and the Punjab Assembly at a dinner he hosted for his supporters, Express News reported late on Tuesday.

According to the report, Raja Riaz will be the parliamentary leader of the Jahangir Tareen like-minded group in the National Assembly, while Saeed Akbar Nawani will be the parliamentary leader in the Punjab Assembly.

Noman Langarial, one of the supporters of Tareen, who attended the dinner, said that 31 lawmakers attended the event. Punjab Assembly Member (MPA) Salman Naeem said during the dinner that supporters of Tareen decided to formally launch their own faction.

“Jahangir Tareen is scheduled to appear in court on Wednesday (today). What happened to Tareen is wrong,” Langarial said, referring to charges against the PTI leader related to the sugar scandal. “That's why we are supporting him [Tareen],” he said. “We have confidence in Prime Minister Imran Khan but we agree on our agenda,” he added.

MPA Naeem said that like-minded members have decided to hold their power show in the Punjab Assembly on Friday.

Sources privy to the development said a meeting of the group has been convened again on Sunday in which the next course of action will be decided.

Reacting to the development, PTI leader Senator Faisal Javed Khan wrote “Imran Khan is PTI & PTI is Imran Khan” on his official Twitter handle.

Tareen said earlier this month that PM Imran assured his friends – the ruling party lawmakers who have rallied around the PTI’s disgruntled leader – that “he [PM] is monitoring my matter personally".

"The PM met my friends and the meeting concluded on a positive note. My friends conveyed their concerns to the premier at length, who assured that he will see the matter personally," Tareen said while talking to the media after a court appearance.

"The premier assured that justice will be meted out," the PTI former secretary general said.

A total of 28 PTI lawmakers – including both National Assembly and provincial assembly members – called on the prime minister on April 27 for “seeking justice” for Tareen who is among the sugar mills owners facing a Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) crackdown.

ISLAMABAD: Estranged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen said on Wednesday that the likeminded group was formed in response to Punjab government's retaliatory action against his group.

"Prime Minister had promised to deliver justice but then Punjab government began retaliatory activities against us and pressurising us."

His remarks came as he appeared before a court in Lahore in the money laundering case registered against him.

In this situation, he added, "We decided that we will raise our voice in the Punjab Assembly. The entire responsibility [of this development] lies on Punjab government."

"We have not formed a forward bloc; we have appointed a focal person to represent us in the assembly."

Tareen urged the Punjab government to stop its "retaliatory activities" forthwith.

He further said, "My bail has been extended till May 31, and the FIA [Federal Investigation Authority] has been asked to complete its probe.

"We have submitted a complete money trail to the FIA, which is now verifying it with the banks," he added.

"I will reiterate that none of the three FIRs mention sugar [scandal]. The ongoing probe and the scandal have no connection," he maintained.

Refuting media reports, he said, "Let me make it clear that we are and will continue to be a part of the PTI."

"There are two issues, one is about Jahangir Tareen and the FIR, for which my allies are accompanying me. The other issue is about the Punjab government's actions."

"When they met the prime minister, he appointed Ali Zafar with the task to meet both sides and ensure justice by meeting both the FIA and us and determine the reality of the issue."

Ali Zafar, he added, has held consultation and I hope that his report will soon be unveiled or sent directly to the premier, so that this matter can be taken forward.

PTI leader Jehangir Tareen is being singled out in Pakistan’s sugar crisis investigation, Senator Ali Zafar told Prime Minister Imran Khan.

In a meeting with the premier, he said that other people have been named in the scandal as well but it looks like only Tareen is being investigated in the case.

Investigations against other leaders and influential groups part of the sugar mafia such as PML-N’s Chaudhry Munir are very slow.

Zafar said it was not just sugar mills in Punjab that were involved in corrupt practices, but those in Sindh and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are doing the same. There are three sugar mills that don’t sell sugar in the local market at all and smuggle the commodity to Afghanistan.

These mills have a monopoly. Last year in December, they had decided to keep the ex-mill price of sugar at Rs55 in February beforehand, which was more than that market price.

Tareen was disqualified from holding a public office in 2017 by the Supreme Court for misdeclaration of assets. He then reportedly grew disgruntled after he was named as one of the sugar barons that were allegedly involved in the sugar price hike. A sugar inquiry report by a government committee, issued on May 2, revealed how sugar barons had cheated farmers, benefited from subsidies and created conditions so that the price of sugar could go up.

Tareen was among the people accused of benefitting the most from the crisis. The report said that six major groups control 51% of the total sugar production. Tareen’s JDW Mills have the biggest share that is 20% of the total production.

LAHORE: As PTI Senator Barrister Ali Zafar who has been tasked by Prime Minister Imran Khan with overseeing the sugar scam probe has yet to complete the analysis of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) investigation, Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid says he (Zafar) should submit the report to the premier forthwith to bring forth the facts.

“Since both PM Khan and Jahangir Tareen group have reposed confidence in Barrister Zafar, he should have submitted the sugar scam report to the premier by now so that the facts come forth,” Mr Rashid told reporters after taking briefing from the FIA Lahore on several issues on Thursday.

The interior minister did not take briefing on the high-profile sugar scam in which the FIA has booked Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s estranged leader Jahangir Khan Tareen, his son Ali Tareen, PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz under money-laundering and fraud charges.

“(Adviser to the premier on accountability) Shahzad Akbar is looking into the sugar scam so I did not take briefing from the FIA on it,” the minister said.

Interestingly, on the Tareen group’s insistence, the premier had separated Akbar from this case.

Mr Rashid said the Tareen group was unnecessarily involving Shahzad Akbar and Azam Khan in this case.

He said the FIA performance was “unsatisfactory”. “I am not satisfied with the performance of the FIA as there are a lot of complaints against it especially cybercrime wing both here and in Islamabad,” he said and added that the ‘blue-eyed’ officials could not spend much time on one station as a rotation policy would have to be followed.

On the other hand, Barrister Zafar held meetings with Tareen’s legal team and the FIA officials to have their views on the investigation conducted so far into the matter.

“I am confident that the analysis of the FIA investigations into the FIRs against Jahangir Tareen would be complete within the shortest possible time. The final report will be submitted to the premier this month,” Senator Zafar had told Dawn.

On Thursday Zafar said in a tweet: “It has come to my notice that certain news are doing rounds of submission of report regarding JKT. This is incorrect & based on some misinformation. I have not submitted any final report so far.”

The prime minister last month had formed a one-man committee comprising his confidant, Senator Zafar, to ascertain whether the concerns that some persons holding key positions in the government and the PTI were politically victimising Mr Tareen, were genuine. The decision to form the committee was made after PM Khan met 30 lawmakers of his party backing Mr Tareen’s stance that he was being victimised.

On the pro-Tareen group’s demand, the government had also changed FIA Lahore Director Mohammad Rizwan who was heading the sugar scam probe.

Mr Tareen had demanded formation of a new team that should be “free of the influence” of prime minister’s adviser Shahzad Akbar.

Rashid’s advice to Buzdar

Sheikh Rashid has advised Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar to placate the concerns of the Tareen group.

“I met Buzdar today and asked him to listen to the concerns of the Tareen group. Issues crop up in the parties but it doesn’t mean Tareen group is going anywhere. It will vote for the government in the budget,” he said.

Earlier, Jahangir Tareen had accused the Buzdar administration of using vindictive tactics against those lawmakers supporting him (Tareen).

Rashid also said that Hudaibiya Paper Mills case against the Sharif family would be reopened in two to three weeks.

GHOTKI: Federal Minister for Planning Asad Umar said on Monday that Prime Minister Imran Khan neither wanted revenge from estranged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen, nor will give he be given any concession.

"Prime minister's struggle spanning 22 years isn't against one person; we go by the name of justice and we believe in justice," Umar said while addressing a ceremony in Ghotki today.

The minister claimed that the law is equal for both the powerful and the weak in the society.

Umar further stated that the demands put forth by Tareen group were 'simple' and that they have deliberated upon.

Sindh govt's performance

Criticising the Sindh government, the PTI leader claimed the provincial government was not allowing the federal government to work in the province.

"They have a policy of nor working [on province's uplift] themselves, neither letting anyone else do it."

Sindh, he added, had not witnessed any development work during the Pakistan People's Party's (PPP) rule during the past 50 years.

Tareen group's meeting

Two days ago, on May 22, Information and Broadcasting Minister Fawad Chaudhry ruled out a rift within the ruling PTI, saying that the estranged party lawmakers of the Tareen Group and the rest were all part of one family.

“We have decided to move forward as one family and any personal or collective problems would be addressed through talks,” the minister told reporters, accompanied by PTI leader Aamir Mehmood Kiani, after they both attended a luncheon hosted by Punjab minister Nauman Langrial.

Langrial is among the members of the group of lawmakers, who pledged their loyalty to Tareen in the wake of money laundering and fraud charges against him.

Other members of the Tareen group including MPAs Saeed Akbar Niwani, Nazir Chohan, Asif Majeed, Ajmal Cheema, Umer Aftab and Khurram Laghari also attended the luncheon.

During the meeting, the two sides discussed the reservations expressed by the group. Fawad said they were all united under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan and the opposition was celebrating for nothing. The minister added that he and Kiani had been assigned the task of addressing the reservations of group in an organisational manner.

LAHORE: Controversy over Senator Barrister Ali Zafar’s analysis of the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) cases against sugar baron Jahangir Khan Tareen deepened further on Wednesday when the PTI rebel group claimed that Mr Zafar had completed his probe and given a ‘clean chit’ to it’s leader (Tareen).

“Barrister Zafar has absolved Mr Tareen of all charges of Satta (sugar pricing manipulation), sugar price hike and any other illegal work in sugar related matters,” MNA Raja Riaz, a spokesperson for Mr Tareen’s group of lawmakers, told Dawn.

“Barrister Zafar had briefed adviser to prime minister on accountability Shahzad Akbar and Jahangir Tareen in a meeting on Tuesday in Islamabad on his findings about the sugar scam probe. Mr Zafar told them that Mr Tareen had not been found guilty of the charges framed by the FIA Lahore,” Mr Riaz said and added that a ‘clean chit’ had been given to Mr Tareen by Mr Zafar and the Tareen group thanked Prime Minister Khan in this respect.

Mr Riaz also said that Barrister Zafar had recommended that Mr Tareen’s case should be forwarded to the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) as FIA had nothing to do with it.

Raja Riaz claims clean chit for his leader; Zafar says report, yet to be submitted to PM, will have no legal value

“After Barrister Zafar’s findings the enemies of Mr Tareen stand exposed,” said Riaz. Both Mr Akbar and Mr Zafar denied having a joint meeting with Mr Tareen in Islamabad on Tuesday.

Mr Zafar said he had meetings with Mr Tareen but did not see him in the presence of Mr Akbar on Tuesday. Raja Riaz said he under oath could confirm this meeting as both gentlemen must be denying it under ‘some compulsion’. “Some persons/media are busy guessing on what my findings in JKT (Jahangir Khan Tareen) turn out to be. Let me make it clear that there is no report submitted by me. Any findings, not necessarily in writing, shall be purely internal to the PTI and have no legal value or status nor can the same have any relevance to or affect pending inquiries/investigations against the sugar barons or Mr Tareen,” Mr Zafar said in a series of tweets on Wednesday.

“As per the policy of the Government of PM IK there is no room for concessions against corruption. However I have been tasked to see into complaints of JKT and will be making my recommendations directly and only to the PM once I conclude,” Zafar said.

A PTI insider told Dawn that Mr Zafar had categorically told Mr Akbar that entire corporate structure might crumble if action on FIA probe in such cases was taken.

“The whole case against Tareen seems to be political, devoid of legality. It was not the domain of the FIA and the Tareen’s case should be referred to the SECP,” he quoted Me Zafar as having said.

He said FIA chief Wajid Zia in his report in sugar affairs had also recommended referring this matter to the SECP.

The insider further said since Zafar’s findings had landed the PTI government in an awkward position because of its ‘accountability narrative’ the cronies of PM Khan were trying to block his (Zafar) report. “Those around PM Khan do not want this report to be made public as it will compromise its NRO narrative,” he said.

Mr Tareen claims to have backing of around 40 lawmakers -- over a two-dozen MPAs and over 10 MNAs. PM Khan, Punjab Chief Minister Usman Buzdar had held separate meetings with this group and assured them of justice in Tareen’s case. The FIA in March last had registered two FIRs against Jahangir Tareen and his son Ali Tareen under Rs5 billion money laundering and fraud charges in the sugar ‘scam’. Both are on interim bail till May 31.

The prime minister last month had formed one-man committee comprising Barrister Zafar to ascertain whether the concerns that some persons holding key positions in the government and the PTI were politically victimising Mr Tareen, were genuine.

The Tareen group had named Shahzad Akbar behind victimisation of Tareen.

PTI’s Jahangir Tareen group has reacted strongly to the case filed against MPA Nazir Chohan by Interior Adviser Shahzad Akbar and said that this move is tantamount to creating a new crisis for PTI and the already troubled government.

The spokesperson for the group termed the move by Shahzad Akbar as reprehensible and said that if there was a problem, it could have been resolved through dialogue.

According to the spokesperson, this was an extreme step which caused irreversible damage to Tareen Group’s efforts to resolve disputes and issues through dialogue. The group has demanded that Shahzad Akbar should immediately withdraw the case and resolve the issues through dialogue.

The case against Nazir Chohan has been filed at Lahore’s Race Course Police Station under Sections 506, 258, 189 and 153. The complainant, Shahzad Akbar, maintained that the accused, Chohan, leveled baseless allegations against him in a TV program.

Shahzad Akbar took to Twitter and confirmed that a case against Nazir Chohan has been lodged over his complaint. He said some ignorant friends are still spreading misinformation on social media. The PM’s adviser also shared a copy of the FIR.

Barrister Ali Zafar may take a month to submit report on Jahangir Tareen, family

Barrister Ali Zafar will take at least one month to submit the report on estranged PTI leader Jahangir Tareen and his family, as per a report in The News.

Last month, Prime Minister Imran Khan assigned Zafar the task to ascertain the facts after a group of pro-Tareen lawmakers alleged that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) was victimising the former party secretary-general in the sugar scam.
Zafar has sought more time due to the heavy workload as he needs to go through at least 20 bank accounts of the Tareen family, says the report, adding that the senator had "stumbled upon these" after being tasked with probing only a few accounts.

He will not be able to furnish a comprehensive finding till he connects all the financial dots vis-à-vis the JKT business empire, sources reveal. This, by all means, doesn’t imply that the unfolding facts might go against JKT.

Speaking to The News, Zafar confirmed it may take him one month to submit the report, rejecting media speculation about the report he was about to submit. The PTI senator said he would deliver what was expected of him.

When The News approached Special Assistant to the PM Mirza Shahzad Akbar, he didn’t attend the calls or messages in this regard.

A senior legislator in the JKT camp also confirmed that the report was expected to be published in the time already mentioned.

"It has come to my notice that certain news are doing rounds of submission of [the] report regarding JKT [Jehangir Khan Tareen]," Ali Zafar said in a tweet last week.

“This is incorrect & based on some misinformation. I have not submitted any final report so far.”

A few days before that, Tareen said a detailed explanation had been given to Ali Zafar in a meeting which he held with the group.

“I am confident the report will soon be unveiled or given directly to the prime minister," he had said outside a Lahore banking court where he had appeared for a hearing.

The former PTI secretary-general had also pointed out that no sugar inquiry was underway against him.

"There is not a single investigation against me going on relating to the sugar scandal," he had said, adding that the three FIRs registered against him were not filed in any sugar inquiry.

On this occasion, Tareen had also reposed confidence in PM Khan and slammed the Punjab government over vengeance being directed to him.

"Khan sahab is an honourable man and I believe he is just," Tareen had said. "However, the Punjab government has started carrying out a vendetta against members of my group."

Expresses displeasure at registration of case against Nazir Chohan; delay in submission of report to PM

PUNJAB:
Estranged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen said on Monday Prime Minister Imran Khan had promised ensuring justice is delivered, saying it is time it was delivered.

"Baseless allegations were levelled against me and now a new date is issued on every hearing," Tareen said while talking to the media after his appearance before a court in Lahore in the money laundering case.

"I respect Ali Zafar [in-charge investigation] who made his effort to complete the report," he said and added, "We hoped that the report would be public by now, but that hasn't happened yet."

The PTI leader further stated that, "It is being speculated that he [Zafar] has submitted the report to the premier, while it is also being said that the report is a positive one for me."

"Prime Minister Imran Khan had promised that justice will be delivered, and so it should be delivered now," he remarked. "Provide justice and don't indulge in politics," the PTI leader stated.

Referring to the registration of a case against one of his aides, Tareen said, "The situation deteriorated when a case was registered against Nazir Chohan."

He clarified that he hadn't met any high-up from the government. "I will speak openly when I get the report."

Earlier, upon being inquired by the learned judge of the court, deputy director FIA, referring to the transfer of the investigation officer, said that changes had been made to the entire agency.

However, the judge asked how could a DG or anyone else transfer an investigation officer.

Subsequently, the court issued a show-cause notice to the officer who transferred the IO, and adjourned the hearing of Jahangir and Ali Tareen's case till June 11.

Last week, on May 24, Federal Minister for Planning Asad Umar said Prime Minister Imran Khan neither wanted revenge from Tareen, nor will give he be given any concession.

"Prime minister's struggle spanning 22 years isn't against one person; we go by the name of justice and we believe in justice," Umar said while addressing a ceremony in Ghotki today.

The Federal Investigation Agency has decided that it would not arrest estranged PTI leader Jahangir Tareen and his son Ali Tareen as well as PML-N President Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shehbaz in connection with its investigation into a multi-billion sugar scam.

Separately, the National Accountability Bureau told the Lahore High Court on Thursday that it did not need to arrest PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif's son-in-law Capt (retd) Muhammad Safdar in an assets beyond means case.

The FIA has sent its summary to Adviser to the PM on Accountability and Interior Mirza Shahzad Akbar and the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) will carry out further proceedings in the sugar case.

The authority has completed its investigation report, according to which the owners of sugar mills were found to be involved in making profits through speculative pricing.

They made a windfall profit of around Rs100 billion through this practice and were also hoarding the sweetener.

The “cash boys” and speculative brokers of Tareen, Shehbaz, Hamza, the brother of Federal Minister Khusro Bakhtiar and other sugar mill owners also turned out to be the same.

FIA sources said as the investigation had been completed, it was not necessary to arrest anyone.
They added that all records and investigation reports had been forwarded to the FIA DG and the prime minister's adviser.

The authority also detected tax evasion worth billions of rupees in the sugar scandal.

The FIA has fully investigated the fraud and could not recover the profit made through tax evasion. This is the job of the FBR, the sources added.

According to sources, the FIA has been provided with some more evidence by Tareen.

The evidence and documents obtained by the FIA were prepared by Tareen with the help of a chartered accountant and former senior FBR officials.

They have also been made part of the record and only the FBR would shed light on what action it could take on them.

The sources said the FIA had achieved the task it was assigned by Prime Minister Imran Khan.

They added that the government knew about how to proceed further on the findings of the FIA in its report.
A sugar inquiry commission – headed by the FIA chief – was formed to probe into a sudden shortage of sugar that resulted in a steep hike in its prices in January 2020.

In its preliminary report – unveiled on April 5 last year – the commission had claimed that sugar mills belonging to the families of the country’s top politicians including PML-N’s Shehbaz Sharif, PTI’s Jahangir Tareen and Khusro Bakhtiar and PPP’s Asif Ali Zardari were among beneficiaries of the crisis.

In its forensic report – issued on May 21 the same year – the commission had accused the sugar mill owners of earning illegal profits to the tune of billions of rupees through unjustified price hikes, benami transactions, tax evasion, misuse of subsidy and purchasing sugarcane off the books. Safdar case

A division bench of the LHC disposed of Safdar's plea for pre-arrest bail in an assets beyond means case after NAB informed the court that it did not require to take him into custody.

In earlier proceedings, the division bench headed by Justice Aalia Neelum was hearing the case.
However, a second member of the bench, Justice Asjad Javed Ghural, refused to hear the matter citing personal reasons.

A new bench was formed and Justice Shahbaz Ali Rizvi was made its second member.

On Thursday, as the proceedings started, the NAB prosecutor told the court that the arrest of the accused was not required by the anti-graft body. On this, the court disposed of the petition.

Tareen, co-accused withdraw interim bail pleas in money laundering case

LHC directs FIA to inform accused seven days prior to arresting them

Estranged Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen and other co-accused in the money laundering case withdrew their interim plea for pre-arrest bails, on Friday.

The Lahore High Court (LHC) heard the money laundering case involving Tareen, his son Ali Tareen among other accused.

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) deputy director told the court that there was no need to arrest Jahangir Tareen at the moment.

At this, the PTI leader's counsel, Salman Safdar, said they were withdrawing the pleas on the basis of the FIA official's statement.

Safdar further stated that the case doesn't even come under the FIA's ambit, adding that it is the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) that looks after matters pertaining to companies.

He observed that the investigative agency took the role of a petitioner unto itself. He asked for the FIA to inform the accused 10 days prior to their arrests.

Approving the request, the court wrapped up the matter of the pleas, directing the authorities to inform the accused seven days prior to arresting them.

Talking to the media after his appearance at court, the estranged PTI leader said that he had appeared in more than 100 proceedings pertaining to the case.

"I submitted all the details with the court and all transfers were made through banks. Now, after a hassle of 10 months, the FIA informs the court that there is no need to arrest me," he remarked.

A day Earlier, it emerged that FIA had decided it would not arrest the PTI leader, his son, Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz President Shehbaz Sharif and his son Hamza Shahbaz in connection with its investigation into the multi-billion rupees sugar scam.

The FIA has sent its summary to Adviser to the PM on Accountability and Interior Mirza Shahzad Akbar and the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) will carry out further proceedings in the sugar case.

Disgruntled leader of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Jahangir Tareen on Sunday pointed out that it was an undeniable fact that he had served tirelessly for the ruling party in good faith for more than a decade, lamenting the deepening rifts within the party.

“Distancing myself from the party’s establishment was an exacting decision but I was compelled to do so. It was a great test for me but I resisted and in turn, Allah made me happy,” Tareen said at a dinner hosted in honour of like-minded party members amid an ongoing feud of the estranged faction with the ruling PTI.

Addressing the workers, Tareen expressed gratitude to them for backing him and staunchly defying when pressed to stop lobbying for him. He also thanked the workers who reached Lahore to show solidarity with him while he was facing the FIA cases.

He lauded the party workers for refusing to relent and abandon him.

“The people of Lodhran love me and I love them too. I will go to greater lengths to fulfil their hopes and expectations from me,” he remarked.

The dinner comes amid reports that the Tareen group was planning to give a tough time to the party’s main leadership. The members of the faction are expected to hold a crucial meeting soon after Jahangir Tareen’s return from Lodhran to deliberate upon the future course of action of the group. Among the multiple strategies under the consideration is the option of turning in mass resignations.

Jahangir Tareen held separate meetings with each worker to discuss their problems and assured them of immediate solutions. The women's wing members also met Tareen.

MPA and Parliamentary Secretary Nazir Khan Baloch said that the people of Lodhran considered themselves incomplete without the leadership of Tareen. “The whole district stands with Mr Tareen and we are always ready to sacrifice our lives for him.”

Former MPA Rana Ijaz Ahmad Noon, District General Secretary PTI Rana Arsalan Khan, Chairman Ushr and Zakat Committee Sardar Irshad Abbas Ghalo, Senior Leaders Tahir Amir Ghauri, Hafiz Siddique Arain, Mehr Muhammad Ashraf Sial, Malik Mumtaz Joya, Sheikh Munawar Nadeem and Ashiq Khan Baloch Advocate also addressed the gathering and expressed full solidarity with Jahangir Tareen.

Earlier, former MNAs Nawab Qasim Malezai and Chaudhry Nawaz Warraich also met Tareen at his residence and discussed the political situation.

The Lahore police on Thursday registered a case against pro-Jahangir Tareen group MPA Khurram Leghari for allegedly harassing and blackmailing a woman.

According to the FIR registered at Defence A Police Station, complainant Amna Yakub stated that Leghari broke into her house, resorted to aerial firing and threatened to kill her.

The complainant adopted the stance that the MPA had been forcing her to keep illicit relations with him by pretending to be an unmarried man. She further said that Leghari had been compelling her for a year to meet secretly.

Leghari had also taken Amna’s signature forcefully on the nikahnama, the FIR stated.

The victim stated that she had also complained to the MPA’s father about his behavior.

Leghari had resigned from the post of adviser to the Punjab chief minister last year in October.

Tareen admits to his role in Punjab numbers game

MULTAN: Estranged leader of the ruling Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) Jahangir Tareen has for the first time publicly admitted that he had played a key role in the formation of the party’s government in Punjab by using his aircraft to approach the independents who had won in different constituencies of the province.

Mr Tareen made the confession while addressing a gathering at Kahror Pacca tehsil of Lodhran district on Monday in which he took the government to task over the growing price hike and advised the rulers to put all other issues aside and try to control inflation first.

A video clip showing Mr Tareen disclosing the details as to how he helped Imran Khan in forming government in Punjab went viral on social and main media on Tuesday.

The opposition parties have been accusing the PTI of committing horse-trading and purchasing loyalties of the independent members through the money of Mr Tareen for the formation of government in Punjab. This was for the first time that Mr Tareen at least admitted to his role in this regard, though he did not provide further details as to how he lured the independents to join the PTI.

Recalls PTI had eight seats fewer than PML-N after polls

Speaking at the gathering, Mr Tareen said though the PTI had succeeded in elections in the province, there was a shortage of some seats (to form government in Punjab).

“You all are well aware that then the plane flew. We had eight seats less as compared to them (the PML-N) while there were 23 MPAs who won the election as independent candidates out of whom some were from the PTI as well. I received a message from Imran Khan that there was no use of our government (at Centre) without (government in) Punjab over which I told him to not worry and with the grace of Allah it was done. Similarly, there was the shortage of eight to nine MNAs. However, I don’t want to go into details,” said Mr Tareen.

Without elaborating, he said soon after formation of government in Punjab, efforts were started to create a gulf between him and Imran Khan.

“I had no issue even with this but the conspirators were well aware that I will be a constant danger if my relations (with Imran Khan) are not severed completely and to achieve this purpose they worked for one and half year. They went against me to the extent no government went against any person. Again I stood honoured. Two ministers, (some) MNAs and MPAs took stand for my sake and even in front of Imran Khan they said that injustice had been done with me while people of their constituencies also welcomed their stance,” he said.

He said that his group was again active and they would take future decision while keeping in view the changing political situation in the country.

“Two years are left to the election ...... we will take decisions while keeping in view the changing political situation. We will take a good decision. A decision which will be in favour of Pakistan. A decision which will be in favour of Lodhran and I am thankful to all those ministers, advisers and parliamentarians who are standing with me,” he said.

Sharing his personal feelings, Mr Tareen said there were ups and downs in his politics but his efforts were for the sake of Pakistan, instead of any personal gain.

“I worked hard day and night for eight years and my efforts were not for my personal gains, rather it was for Pakistan. I was making efforts as I believed that Imran Khan was different from all other politicians”, he said.

Mr Tareen said when he was disqualified “in the outcome of a wrong and rubbish decision” only six months before the election, he left the country, but he didn’t leave Imran Khan. He said when he was abroad he had a discussion with his son who said that “if today I make an announcement that I will not work for the PTI anymore, it means whatever I was doing was only for the sake of personal gains.”

“Thus, I had decided that I will continue my struggle for the PTI with the same spirit and ultimately we succeeded,” he said.

Talking to media on Monday, Mr Tareen said the people were suffering because the government had failed to control price hike.

Shameful and pathetic, basically PTI was involved in horse trading something they cry about others doing.

A day after former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Justice (r) Wajihuddin Ahmed accused Prime Minister Imran Khan of taking money from disgruntled PTI leader Jahangir Khan Tareen to run his Bani Gala household, the latter said he never paid for the "household expenses of Bani Gala".

In a tweet, Tareen, who is reportedly not on good terms with PM Imran anymore, said that regardless of the current status of his relationship with Imran, he would not hide the truth.

"I did whatever was in my capacity to help PTI in the quest to build a new Pakistan but I never gave a penny for the household expenses of Bani Gala," he added.

"Just want to set the record straight," he added.

'Rs5 million to run Bani Gala'

A day earlier, Wajihuddin Ahmed claimed that the household expenses of Imran were borne by Tareen, saying that the former provided funds of up to Rs3 million per month.

Ahmed, who had parted ways with the party in the wake of serious differences with PTI chief Imran Khan, made the claim while chatting on a news programme on a private TV channel.

"The notion that Imran Khan is a [financially] honest man is completely devoid of truth," he said and went on to claim that, "he [PM Imran] hasn't been running his household himself for years”.

"Initially, the Jahangir Tareen group used to pay Rs3 million monthly to run his house and the amount was later increased to Rs5m after it was determined that Rs3m were not enough for the PTI chief's palatial Banigala residence.”

Bani Gala expenses: Govt to file defamation case against Justice Wajihuddin

Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry has said that the government will take action against ex-Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) member former Justice Wajihuddin Ahmed.

The retired justice had alleged that PTI's senior leader Jahangir Khan Tareen used to provide funds of up to Rs5 million per month to cover Prime Minister Imran Khan's household expenses.

"This belief is entirely false that Imran Khan is a financially honest man," Ahmed said while speaking on Bol news program 'Tabdeeli'.

"His condition is such that he hasn't been running his household himself for years."

In a presser on Thursday, information minister Chaudhry said that PM Imran's reputation was targeted and article 9 of the Constitution of Pakistan was also violated.

He said that a defamation case will be filed against the retired judge. Chaudhry added that the government would also serve notices on those TV channels that aired the allegations.

'Never gave a penny for the household expenses'

Meanwhile, PTI's Tareen has rejected the claims, saying that regardless of the current status of his relationship with Imran khan, the truth must be told.

"I did whatever was in my capacity to help PTI in the quest to build a new Pakistan but I never gave a penny for the household expenses of Bani Gala.”

"Just want to set the record straight,” he tweeted.

Estranged PTI leader Jahangir Khan Tareen has said that he was not a party in a petition against the principle of lifelong disqualification of lawmakers, clarifying that he was not consulted over the matter.

“The Supreme Court Bar Association has filed the petition,” Tareen said while speaking to media on Saturday. He said that the lawyers hold the view that the lifetime disqualification of lawmakers was not based on justice.

However, he maintained that in this case the opportunity of right to appeal and produce witnesses was not provided. The provision doesn’t give the right to appeal against a court verdict, which negates the principle of even-handed justice, he added.

Supreme Court Bar Association President Ahsan Bhoon recently filed a petition in the Supreme Court challenging Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution, which relates to the disqualification of parliamentarians.

Article 62(1)(f), which sets the precondition for a member of parliament to be "sadiq and ameen" (honest and righteous), is the same provision under which former prime minister Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by a five-judge SC bench on July 28, 2017, in the Panama Papers case. Similarly, Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen was disqualified by a separate bench of the apex court under the same provision.

Replying to a question, Jahangir Tareen said that the lawyers’ body did not consult with him over the matter.
“In the petition against lifetime disqualification of lawmakers, the SCBA president has stated that the top court couldn’t assume responsibilities of a trial court under Article 184 (3) of the Constitution.” DNA

A day after Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) officers probing Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif and disgruntled Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Tareen were transferred, an official sought the cancellation of the order on Wednesday.

According to Express News, a director of the federal agency wrote to the director-general seeking annulment of the transfer.

On Tuesday, this paper reported that the said officers were investigating important cases, including the money laundering case against the opposition leader and his son.

Sources in the agency revealed that while the cases were in their final stages, and their challans submitted to the court, they were baffled at the decision.

The decision to transfer nine officers probing high-profile cases came soon after the resignation of PM’s aide on accountability Shehzad Akbar. They were posted under the command of additional FIA director general (South) Karachi.

The officials include FIA Lahore Assistant Director Syed Ali Mardan, who is also part of the JIT investigating cases against Shehbaz, Hamza and former FIA director general Bashir Memon. FIA Assistant Directors Emad Arshad and Rana Faisal, who were investigating important cases, were also transferred.

Abdul Qayyum, Zawar Ahmed, Shiraz Umar, Nadeem Ahmed and Sibghatullah Khan were also among the other assistant directors transferred.

On Wednesday, it was reported that Adviser to Prime Minister on Accountability and Interior Brigadier (retd) Musaddiq Abbasi would visit the Lahore office, where he would be briefed by Director Zone One Dr Muhammad Rizwan on important cases. He would also be briefed on the cases against the said political leaders, besides other cases, it added.

Earlier this week, during a meeting between Brig (retd) Abbasi and Interior Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, the latter urged the newly-appointed official to work towards rectifying flaws in the prosecution process to “catch big fish”.

The meeting came at a time when the ruling PTI is under fire for not being able to act on its agenda of rooting out corruption. Recently, Pakistan went down 16 spots on the Transparency International’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), prompting the people to question the incumbent government’s anti-corruption stance.

During the meeting, Rashid guided Abbasi about government’s accountability drive, and called for speeding up the process to bring ongoing cases to a logical conclusion.

The Jahangir Tareen group is considering supporting the opposition in the no-trust move against the PTI-led government, sources said on Wednesday.

The Tareen group held a meeting at the residence of Awn Chaudhry under the chairmanship of estranged PTI leader Jahangir Tareen.

The group gave authority to Tareen to take a final decision.

According to sources, majority of the group’s members decided to enter the political arena with full force and launch the anti-government strategy.

Most members of the group suggested standing with the PML-N in the anti-government stance while those hailing from Jhang advised maintaining independent status.

Sources said Tareen Group decided to bring their strategy to the fore after formal presentation of the no-trust move.

They further said that the Tareen group could support the opposition when the no-trust move is presented, adding that the PTI position was “very weak” in the Tareen circle.

Tareen group expressed concern that key figures in the local government elections would not like to take the PTI ticket. It adopted the stance that inflation had broken the back of the common man over which there was a strong public reaction and that the group would play an active role in this regard.

Tareen group further said that it would hold meetings from time to time and would not discourage contacts from political parties.

In May last year, Tareen launched a group of like-minded lawmakers in the National Assembly as well as the Punjab Assembly.

Tareen had formed the group after the premier had categorically said that the FIA would not be influenced to give relief to the disgruntled leader in the sugar scam probe but he would personally look into the matter to avoid any political victimisation in the case.

The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) – the nine-party opposition alliance – with mainstream PML-N and JUI-F leading from the front has been active to reach out and persuade the ruling PTI’s allies after it made a “firm decision” to move a no-trust motion against the government in the coming days over rising inflation and “failure” to address people’s woes.

What has raised eyebrows is the dependence of the PDM on the largesse of government allies to make a no-confidence move a success. The move also means that the numerical strength of the opposition is short of the required magic figure to send the government packing.

A PML-N delegation led by its president Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday met with the PML-Q leadership at its residence in Lahore after a gap of 14 years as part of the efforts to muster support for the no-confidence motion.

The PML-N delegation discussed matters of mutual interest and the prevailing political situation with PML-Q chief Chaudhry Shujaat Hussain and his cousin Punjab Assembly Speaker Pervez Elahi.

In a related development, JUI-F chief Maulana Fazlur Rehman, who is also the president of the PDM, spoke to PPP co-chairman Asif Ali Zardari by telephone and told him about PDM’s consensus on the no-confidence motion.

Zardari expressed his willingness to throw weight behind the move as Fazl inquired after his health. The two discussed the overall political situation of the country.

Last week, Fazl visited the Gulberg residence of Chaudhry brothers and persuaded them to consider the PDM’s request to part ways with the government.

FIA Punjab Director Muhammad Rizwan, who was leading the investigation of important cases including the sugar scandal, has gone on leave and Deputy Director Nazia Ambreen has been handed over the temporary charge of carrying out his duties.

Rizwan was probing corruption cases against leading political personalities including PML-N-President Shehbaz Sharif, who is also the leader of the opposition in the National Assembly, and estranged PTI leader, sugar baron Jahangir Tareen.

Following the change in the political situation in the country, the officers involved in the investigation of the cases have started taking leaves to sideline themselves.

According to a notification issued by the FIA HR Deputy Director Headquarters, Rizwan, on his request, is taking leave with his complete salary from April 11.

On his return, he would be bound to report to the FIA headquarters.

Deputy Director Ambreen would replace him on a temporary basis.

On being contacted by The Express Tribune, Rizwan said he had taken a leave himself.

In November 2020, the FIA had registered cases against Tareen, his son, Shehbaz and his two sons and others in a multibillion rupee sugar scam under the money laundering, fraud and other charges.

Read Officers probing Shehbaz, Tareen recalled

An FIR was registered against Tareen, his son Ali Tareen under sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 420 (cheating of public shareholders) and 109 of the Pakistan Penal Code and r/w 3/4 of Anti Money Laundering Act.

Shehbaz and his sons — Hamza and Suleman— were booked under sections 419, 420, 468, 471, 34 and 109 — financial fraud, impersonation and forgery — of the PPC and 5(2) and 5(3) — criminal misconduct — of Prevention of Corruption Act and r/w 3/4 of Anti Money Laundering Act.

The FIR had said during the course of inquiry it was noted that an amount of at least Rs1.2 billion was overpaid (transferred by Tareen) from the accounts of a listed public limited company (JDW Sugar Mills Ltd) to another company (JK Forming System Ltd, hereinafter JKFSL owned by his children) while purchasing the assets of the latter (JKFSL) at an exorbitant non-arm’s length purchase price of Rs4.35 billion in November 2013. During the course of present inquiry, it had transpired that the JDW Sugar Mills recorded a false disclosure in its annual audited financial statement of 2014.

The FIR against Shehbaz and his sons read that during the course of the FIA inquiry, it was learnt that total deposits amounting to over Rs25 billon (2008-18), identified so far, were received in the bank accounts of various low-wage employees of Ramzan Sugar Mills and Al-Arabia Sugar Mills and accounts of fake companies set up and controlled by the Sharif group.

Beleaguered Punjab Chief Minister Hamza Shehbaz and the Jahangir Khan Tareen group on Friday decided to move the Supreme Court against the Election Commission of Pakistan’s decision that de-seated 25 dissident lawmakers of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf who defected in the CM’s election.

The decision to head to the top court was taken during a meeting Punjab CM Hamza held with the members of the disgruntled faction of the PTI, party sources revealed. Former lawmakers of the Punjab Assembly who were de-notified by the ECP earlier this month were also in attendance.

The sources added that in order to salvage the uncertain political future of the disqualified lawmakers, the two sides deliberated upon ways in which legal nuts and bolts could be tapped into, particularly the observations made by the CJP during the hearings of presidential reference on the interpretation of Article 63-A.

The de-seated MPAs belonging to Jahangir Tareen, who feel aggrieved by the ECP’s decision, were of the view that the decision of the electoral watchdog was arbitrary in nature, underscoring that the apex court had held a completely different opinion in the matter.

“Most of the members in the Tareen group had won the election as independents,” Faisal Hayat Jabboana, dissident PTI member of the Tareen group, said.

Meanwhile, observers point out that in case the PML-N decides to go to a fresh election, the allocation of five vacant reserved seats will assume an important role. Of the 25 de-seated PTI MPAs, five were elected on reserved seats, which would be distributed among parties on the basis of their current strength in the PA.

The Punjab Assembly’s current strength is 346 members: the PTI has 158 lawmakers, its ally PML-Q 10, the PML-N 165, PPP seven, five independents and one Rah-i-Haq Party.

The ECP’s verdict, following the apex court’s majority opinion on defection, had thrown the fate of the newly elected chief minister Hamza Shehbaz, who clinched the power by peeling off lawmakers from the PTI, into a new chapter of uncertainty.

It is pertinent to recall that earlier on Monday, the PTI had approached the ECP to stop Hamza Shehbaz from working as the Punjab chief minister after the poll supervisor de-seated 25 dissident members of the Punjab Assembly.

“Deciding on the reference, the election commission has terminated the membership of 25 dissident members,” PTI’s counsel Faisal Chaudhry wrote in a letter to the CEC. “Hamza Shahbaz has lost the majority in the Punjab Assembly after the decision of the election commission,” it added.

FIA closes case against Jahangir, Ali Tareen
Money laundering of Rs 7b 'could not be proved' against father-son duo

The Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has decided to close the money laundering case against former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Jahangir Khan Tareen and his son Ali Tareen.

According to Express News, FIA has sought a response from the Ministry of Interior in this regard, and an action plan has been prepared by its officials.

According to FIA, money laundering could not be proved against the father-son duo.

It should be noted here that a case of money laundering of Rs7 billion was registered against Jahangir and Ali by the FIA.

Now, as soon as orders are received from the FIA and Ministry of Interior, the concerned magistrate will be approached for the expulsion of the case very soon.

Sugar baron Jahangir Khan Tareen and his son, Ali Tareen, finally got relief after a local court on Friday dismissed the money laundering case against them as the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) cited a lack of ‘incriminating evidence’.

The orders in the case – involving the alleged laundering of over Rs2 billion – were passed by the judicial magistrate in light of the report submitted by the agency.

The investigation officer (IO) of FIA stated that, after conducting an inquiry, no allegations of money laundering were proven and that all the transactions were carried out in accordance with the laws of the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

The officer said since it was essentially an investment case, the relevant forum was a civil court. He further added that the accused could provide documentary evidence for all transactions in question, and no evidence of transactions in the form of dollars was found.

The court, after the IO’s report, ordered the quashing of the First Information Report (FIR) against the father-son due.

Tareen returns to fray amid talk of ‘parallel PTI’

A group of politicians — mostly belonging to south Punjab and led by Jahangir Khan Tareen — on Monday mulled a proposition floated by the powers that be to set up a ‘parallel’ Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf to contain ousted prime minister Imran Khan’s party ahead of the next elections.

The Tareen group held a huddle in which disgruntled MNAs and former Punjab MPAs, who were disqualified after voting for the PML-N candidate in the chief minister’s election last year, participated.

“The Tareen group has been given a go-ahead to focus on breaking the PTI, especially in the light of the possible disqualification of Imran Khan in any of the cases pending against him. And this meeting was primarily convened to discuss this,” a source privy to developments told Dawn.

He said that a dissident faction of the PTI, named ‘Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf Nazriati’, was already registered with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and it was likely that the Tareen group might use this platform to get the job done.

As per the ECP website, Sheikhupura-based Akhtar Iqbal Dar is the chairman of PTI Nazriati.

“A recent meeting between Senate Chairman Sadiq Sanjrani and Jahangir Tareen should also be seen in this context,” he said, adding that the discussion pertained to the “future of the PTI after its chair*man’s disqualification”, which the participants of the meeting thought to be “imminent”.

“A parallel platform would have all the support of the powers that be to dent the PTI,” the source said.

“Imran Khan does not respect anyone and takes all decisions on his own,” Mr Dar said. He was a classmate in college of the PML-N’s Saad Rafique and PTI’s Riaz Fatayana.

Akhtar Iqbal Dar, who hails from Sheikhupura, further said the PTI-N would become ‘relevant’ before the next elections.

Didn't Tareen take his crooks to Bajwa and the mafia. Tareen has trillions but no sukoon. Izzat is given by Allah

LAHORE: After remaining out of the scene, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf’s (PTI) estranged leader Jahangir Khan Tareen has decided to form a new national-level political party”, sources privy to the development told Geo News on Friday.

According to the sources, PTI leaders upset with the party are also expected to join the new setup. Apart from those, many political families from Dera Ghazi Khan, Rajanpur, Muzzafargarh, Lodhran and Multan are expected to join hands with Tareen.

The sources claimed that many “important leaders” from Sindh, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan have also contacted the former PTI leader.

Sources shared that Tareen will be patron-in-chief of the party.

Tareen was the secretary general of the PTI before he was ousted from politics in 2017 after the Supreme Court disqualified him for being "dishonest" on a petition filed by Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) leader Hanif Abbasi.

Abbasi had approached the Supreme Court seeking the disqualification of PTI Chairman Imran Khan, and Tareen.

However, despite the disqualification, Tareen remained part of PTI and was crucial in wooing independent lawmakers to join the Imran Khan-led party after the 2018 elections. His efforts proved critical as they helped Khan secure the prime ministership in 2018.

But after coming to power Tareen and PTI leader Aleem Khan’s relationship with the PTI turned sour.

In May 2022, the former prime minister revealed the reason behind his differences with both leaders and said that both were seeking “illegal benefits from him.”

Speaking during a podcast, Khan claimed that differences with both estranged leaders developed when he refused to entertain their requests.

“Aleem Khan expected me to legalise his 300-acre land near Ravi”, Khan said, adding “from then onwards, I developed differences with him.”

While talking about Tareen, Khan said: “Tareen stood with those who are the biggest dacoits in the country. When I ordered a probe into the matter [sugar scandal], differences developed with Tareen.”

After being sidelined both Aleem and Tareen remained quiet but came under the spotlight after the Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) moved the vote of no-confidence motion against Imran Khan in April of last year. The move eventually led to the ouster of Khan from the premiership.

However, during the no-confidence motion, a group of PTI dissidents emerged that supported Tareen. Among those is Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Raja Riaz.

Interestingly, rumours of Tareen forming a new party have been rife since last year.

In January of this year, it was reported that Aleem and Tareen along with other PTI dissidents were planning to launch a new party.

In March of this year, it was reported that the splinter group named “Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Nazriyati (PTIN) or Haqeeqi Tehreek-e-Insaaf (HTI)” would be formed to contest the upcoming elections.

Members of the Jahangir Khan Tareen (JKT) Group put forth a proposal during an Iftar dinner which was attended by several members of the dissident PTI groups and leaders including Raja Riaz and Awn Chaudhry.

Moreover, ever since the clampdown on PTI after the May 9 protests that were held following Imran Khan’s arrest, many leaders have parted ways with the party.

A faction called the PTI Haqiqi was formed a day earlier by Rao Yasir, who previously served as PTI Multan district Youth Wing president.

Jahangir Khan Tareen met PTI defector Firdous Ashiq Awan at his residence in Islamabad and discussed his future political plan with her.

Tareen group’s Aon Chaudhry was also present during the meeting.

Though there has been no word from the Tareen group regarding their re-entry to the political arena, reports suggest that the former PTI leader and financier would re-launch his political career with a new political party. Even before May 9, the idea of a ‘parallel PTI’ had been in the works.

Ex-PTI loyalists flock to new boss, JKT

• Aleem Kham keen to become president of ‘Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party’; Fawad, Zaidi, ex-governor Imran, Kiyani, Firdous, Maulvi, Chohan attend reception
• Zardari camped in Lahore to woo defectors

LAHORE: Jahangir Khan Tareen, who is reportedly on a mission to gather PTI deserters on one platform, made a notable progress on Wednesday when several key players of Imran Khan’s team joined hands with the sugar baron.

At a huddle in Lahore, former PTI stalwarts Fawad Chaudhry, Amir Kiyani, Ali Zaidi, Imran Ismail, Mahmood Maulvi, Firdous Ashiq Awan, Ajmal Wazir, Nauraiz Shakoor and Fayyazul Hasan Chohan embraced their ‘new boss’ with smile on their faces.

Interestingly, some of them had announced a ‘temporary break’ from politics while quitting the PTI in the wake of May 9 incidents. However, their break lasted only a couple of weeks before they formally entered the new political camp.

Former Punjab minister Murad Raas, who had formed the ‘Democrats’ group in league with another ex-minister Hashim Dogar a few days ago claiming support of nearly three dozen ex-lawmakers, also decided to side with Mr Tareen on the promise of getting a good position in the new party the latter is going to launch shortly.

Awn Chaudhry, a member of the JKT camp, said the name of the new party would be ‘Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP)’. A source told Dawn that there was consensus among the group members over the name, but a last-minute change could not be ruled out.

Disgruntled PTI leader and sugar baron – Jahangir Tareen – on Wednesday announced the formation of a new political party – Istehkam-e-Pakistan – comprising more than 100 former National Assembly members and leaders of the former ruling party.

The announcement was made at the residence of Aleem Khan – another estranged leader of the PTI, where a dinner was hosted for the former ruling party legislators.

Nearly 100 former PTI members of the national and provincial assemblies joined the new party, expressing confidence in Tareen’s leadership.

Those who joined the party include former Sindh governor Imran Ismail, ex-shipping minister Ali Zaidi, former federal minister Amir Kayani, Firdous Ashiq Awan, Mahmood Molvi, Fayyazul Hassan Chohan, Murad Raas and Jai Parkash.

Meanwhile, GG Jamal from erstwhile Fata, Ajmal Parvez, Nauman Langrial from Punjab and Naurez Shakoor also joined the new party.

Former adviser to Punjab chief minister for auqaf and religious affairs Syed Rafakat Ali Gillani also joined Tareen’s party.

Ex-MPA from Chishtian Mumtaz Mehrvi also announced joining Istehkam-e-Pakistan.

Similarly, former MPA from Sahiwal, Mehr Irshad Kathia, Mian Usman Ashraf from Nankana Sahib, and Major (retd) Khurram Rokhiri from Mianwali decided to join the new party.

Tareen is expected to hold an important news conference with his party members on Friday (tomorrow).

Several leaders of the PTI had parted ways with the party after the government held Imran Khan responsible for the riots that broke out across the country following his arrest in a graft case on May 9.

Protesters attacked the government infrastructure as well as the military installations and also vandalised the GHQ and the Lahore corps commander’s residence.

The disgruntled PTI leader is known to wield influence over important leaders from Karachi, interior Sindh, Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan.

Tareen, who was once a confidant of Imran and helped the PTI form government in Punjab in 2018, developed differences with the PTI chief after the latter allowed the FIA to lay hands on him in a sugar scam case in early 2021.

Later, Tareen’s group of 25 MPAs, including Aleem Khan, was instrumental in toppling the PTI-led Punjab government. These lawmakers had voted in favour of PML-N’s Hamza Shehbaz for the chief minister election in April last year.

In December 2017, the Supreme Court disqualified Tareen, who was the PTI secretary general at that time, declaring that he had proven dishonest under Article 62(1)(f) of the Constitution and Section 99 of Representation of People Act (ROPA) on one count among the multiple charges brought against him.

On September 27, 2018, the same apex court bench rejected a review petition filed by him.

Marriyum Aurangzeb reacts to launch of Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party

Federal Information Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb on Thursday reacted to the launch of the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP).

Taking to Twitter, Ms Aurangzeb bashed the embattled Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), saying, "There is no spirit left in the PTI. With the departure of the leaders who built the party, PTI is left with only statue."

Speaking about journalist Baqir Sajjad, Ms Aurangzeb said, "I have spoken to the Islamabad IG police regarding this incident. He has assured me that he will investigate the matter on priority and will speak to Baqir Sajjad soon".

On Wednesday, Ms Aurangzeb said the PTI was on a mission to cause damage to the economic, defence, and national interests of the country.

Expressing her thoughts, Ms Aurangzeb said, "History is witness that no one can fool the nation every time by resorting to false tactics and propaganda. The social media network was launched with foreign funding to malign the national security institution".

"The nation will never forget those working on an anti-state agenda. The cypher and the May 9 riots are two stages of a conspiracy. First, they resorted to propaganda against the United States under the guise of a cipher narrative. Then they beg the US after the May 9 vandalism," Ms Aurangzeb schooled the PTI.

Ms Aurangzeb asserted, "First negotiating with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and then violating the agreement was also part of the foreign agenda".

"The uproar caused by foreign media in connection with the human rights violations is also part of the foreign agenda to stop foreign financial aid to the country," she added.

PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi on Saturday said that the experiment of launching the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP), is bound to fail.

Likening the IPP to a patient’s arrival at the hospital after a lethal accident, he remarked that the doctors would check and write “patient received dead.” Exactly like that, the IPP is “launched dead” and it would not make any difference, he said.

However, Mr Qureshi said, all politicians have the right to make their political choices.

“Some of our heavyweight political friends have made their choices, which is welcome. How*ever, the experiment is bound to fail,” he said.

Jahangir Khan Tareen appoints ex-PTI loyalists as party officials

Few days after launching his new political party, Jahangir Khan Tareen announced the office bearers of the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP), most of whom are former PTI leaders who jumped ship following the May 9 violence.

The IPP patron also arrived in London on Monday to reportedly seek ‘guidance’ from PML-N supreme leader Nawaz Sharif.

“I am pleased to announce Abdul Aleem Khan as the president of the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party. Aamir Mehmood Kiyani as secretary general. Awn Chaudhry as additional secretary general & spokesperson of the party as well as of the patron-in-chief,” Mr Tareen said in a series of tweets on Monday.

He also nominated Ishaq Khan Khakwani, Nauman Langrial, Saeed Akbar Nawani, Dr Firdous Ashiq Awan, Fayyazul Hassan Chohan, Murad Raas and retired Maj Khurram Rokhri to represent IPP on all media platforms.

Interestingly, this was the first tweet from Mr Tareen’s account since December 2021. Mr Tareen, who was disqualified for life by the Supreme Court in 2017, has once again become active in politics after the May 9 violent attacks.

Tareen served notice for 'stealing' party’s name
Istehkam-e-Pakistan Tehreek says they were registered on May 17, 2022

Ishtehkam-e-Pakistan Tehreek has sent a legal notice to Jahangir Khan Tareen and Aleem Khan for stealing the name of their party.

A legal notice has been sent to Tareen and Aleem, the patron-in-chief and president of the newly formed party, respectively, by Ahmed Kaleem for stealing the name of the party.

The legal notice states that the Istehkam-e-Pakistan Tehreek was registered on May 17, 2022, and stealing the name of the pre-existing party is a clear violation of the Election Act 2017.

The legal notice sent to Tareen and Aleem gives seven days to them to suggest another name for their party which is in line with their personal ideology.

The legal notice also said that Istehkam-e-Pakistan Tehreek is not a party but an ideology with the slogan – stabilisation of Pakistan.

Party not to go for seat adjustment in election, says Aleem Khan

The newly formed Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP) on Tuesday disclosed that Jahangir Tareen – once a close aide of PTI chief Imran Khan – would be their candidate for premiership in the next general election scheduled to be held in October this year.

The revelation was made by party president Aleem Khan during Express News programme Kal Tak.

Expressing his views, Aleem maintained that his party would not go for seat adjustment with any political party in the election.

“[We] will contest against PTI and PDM in the next election because people are against both these parties. IPP will not make seat adjustment with any party in the polls,” he said.

Khan observed that Tareen would be their candidate for the premiership.

He predicted that the end of PTI was near, adding that several lawmakers would join the IPP after Eidul Azha.

More people left Imran khan and flew towards a new party.

Over 30 ‘disgruntled’ PTI UC chairmen join Tareen’s party

KARACHI: More than 30 disgruntled union committee (UC) chairmen belonging to the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI), who had defied their party decision to vote for Jamaat-i-Islami candidate Hafiz Naeem ur Rehman in Karachi mayoral election in June, on Tuesday announced that they would ‘support’ the Istehkam-i-Pakistan Party (IPP) — the new home of most PTI ‘deserters’, which was launched in June by sugar baron Jahangir Khan Tareen.

The announcement came at the residence of former Sindh governor and founding leader of the IPP Imran Ismail who, along with his new party leaders and more than a dozen UC chairmen of PTI, addressed a press conference and described the decision as a beginning of a new chapter in Karachi politics on Tuesday.

The IPP leader termed the development significant in the run-up to the February 8 general elections in the metropolis and other parts of Sindh.

“These 32 UC chairmen were actually given tickets by us [estranged PTI leaders] and they all stood with the party for their ideology,” he said. “But what happened on May 9 forced everyone to rethink their loyalty. So their ideology is still there for peaceful and prosperous Pakistan, but they can’t stand with the party which is in direct conflict with national institutions.”

He, however, didn’t come up with a clear answer to a question about any change in loyalty of these 34 UC chairmen in the City Council where in June they abstained from voting in favour of their party-backed JI candidate.

Responding to a question, he said the IPP would contest the general elections from Karachi with full force and saw the Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) as the main rival in the Feb 8 polls.

He admitted that the PTI chairman was still the most popular leader of Pakistan but added that ‘popularity alone’ couldn’t help anyone win elections.

“No doubt that he’s [Imran Khan] still very popular leader. But being popular is other thing and favourite contestant in the polls is another. So I don’t think that despite this fact he and his party could do much in the upcoming elections,” added Mr Ismail.

Mahmood Moulvi, the Sindh president of IPP, shared details of the party’s engagements in the province where the party had held several meetings with leaders of different political parties.

He said the party believed in true essence of politics and dialogue for which it had engaged in talks with different leaders and parties.

“We are frequently meeting people and leaders,” he said to a query. “This is what politics is about. Being opponent or rival doesn’t mean any enmity. This is the true essence of politics and this is what unfortunately we lost over the years.”

Tareen refutes impression of enjoying establishment’s support ahead of poll

Jahangir Khan Tareen, the chairman of the newly-formed Ishtehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP), on Sunday refuted the impression that the military establishment was favouring the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) and his own party ahead of the general elections, as reported by Express News.

Tareen emphasised that only Pakistan was the establishment’s ladla (darling), as it only desired the country’s well-being.

He expressed these remarks while responding to a journalist's query ahead of his address during the party’s rally in Punjab’s Kamoke.

The journalist asked whether the IPP is more favoured by the establishment or the PML-N, Tareen clarified, "The establishment's favourite is only Pakistan."
