Ahed Tamimi rose to prominence in 2017 after a video of her slapping an Israeli soldier went viral, bringing renewed attention to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict -- especially Palestinian children living under Israeli military occupation.

At the time of the confrontation, the 16-year-old girl was indignant over news that an Israeli soldier had shot her younger cousin Mohammad in the head with a rubber-coated bullet, seriously wounding him. It wasn't the first time Tamimi stood up to an armed soldier, nor was it the first time such an encounter had been captured on film.

But the image of a fearless teen, with curly blonde hair and pink shirt, slapping a heavily armed soldier sparked interest and debate across the world.

I'm surprised this took you so long to pick up...the Palestinian poster girl has been doing the rounds now...Al Jazeera had an appalling article comparing her to Malala...one was shot in the head for demanding girls be educated...and Tamimi?...provokes and hits soldiers on film...and said following her arrest that she wants to die a martyr...

I feel sorry for her in some ways. Her family have raised her to provoke soldiers while they film her.

Videos of her punching, kicking and slapping two Israeli soldiers is her latest hit. The idea of somehow exposing how brutal the IDF are towards children/women by manufacturing a situation. That isn’t resistance.

I find it odd actually how both her and her family are being presented as ‘peace activists.’

It’s akin to that silly placard a guy had in London ‘behead those who say Islam is violent’.

I mean the peace loving daughter loves to attack soldiers who haven’t attacked her.

The mother Nariman has praised terrorists who killed 55 Israelis (21 of whom were children). She has praised the murderer of Hallel Yaffa who was a 13 year old girl murdered in her sleep.

She has praised Ahlam Tamimi who after the Sbarro bombing which killed 15 civilians including 7 children had this to say:

"I admit that I was a bit disappointed, because I had hoped for a larger toll. Yet when they said "three dead," I said: 'Allah be praised'...Two minutes later, they said on the radio that the number had increased to five. I wanted to hide my smile, but I just couldn't. Allah be praised, it was great. As the number of dead kept increasing, the passengers were applauding.

During the wave of stabbing attacks she shared ‘a map of the spots that have to be targeted in the filthy body of the Israeli soldier.’

They are not opposed to what they call ‘armed resistance’ and openly praise terrorists attacks. Yet they are ‘peace activists.’

Manal Tamimi has tweet after tweet of praising of terror attacks.

One such example:

“I do hate Israel, i do hate zionisim, i wish a thrid Intefada coming soon and people rais up and kills all these zionist settlers everywhere.”

I’m not sure the above statement is particularly peaceful really?

Bassem to his credit has cultivated his image a lot better. However not always. It’s on record. Bassem has had a freudian slip on quite a few occasions.

“If there is a third intifada … we want to be the ones who started it.”

Is This Where the Third Intifada Will Start?

He’s also done the standard ‘blood libel’ thing. And he advocates rock throwing. Last time I checked throwing rocks isn’t peaceful protest.

But a question for the supporters I guess. Isn’t it a bit shameful that children are being used as part of the ‘resistance?’

It’s immoral and it’s cowardice. But unfortunately Ahed Tamimi isn’t the first kid to be exploited nor will she be the last. I mean there was a 13 year old boy sent out to attack not that long ago. Child sacrifice as resistance?

The Tamimi’s encourage children to take part in their confrontations with the IDF. Something which Bassem calls ‘their duty.’

I wouldn’t ask my child to throw rocks at soldiers, or slap them in the face. I certainly wouldn’t film them doing it. I also wouldn’t praise a child for committing a terror attack. No responsible parent would. The Tamimi’s have raised their child with hate and exploited the fact that she is photogenic and used her for their propaganda.

For all the chatter about what Israel does to their children. It would help if some Palestinians didn’t actively push their children to the front line and showed more care for their own children instead of using them.

What a pile of rubbish. You are supporting the most evil people in this world.

I just think it's a shame...there are a lot of videos of Ahed...her parents have been getting her and her brother to do this for years...she goes up to the soldier...mum gets the camera...the confrontation starts...

Like i've said Bassem Tamimi says its important for children to get involved in these activities...whether it be confrontations of stone throwing...

Like I said...as a parent would you tell your child to start kicking and punching a soldier?...would you pick up a camera and film it?...

Do tell me in any of the videos she is in...what are soldiers doing in the video?...they are standing...she approached them on camera...and then berates them...now she's 17 and she's using her fists and legs...her parents have been getting her to do this for 5 years...

“We have the right to resist. Our children are doing their duty and must be strong.”

The rest you are free to try and disprove...

Feel free to check out Ahlam Tamimi in particular...

This is her dad's response...

She's very pale ... Thought she wa Israeli at first.

More brutality by IDF towards minors.

:))) You alright mate ?

Perfectly fine thanks :) ...

You know what...no-one is expected to agree with me...or even discuss with me...but if you really are interested then feel free to check things out yourself...and you might realise it's not nearly as simple as 'Evil IDF arrests poor, innocent girl'...

This is just hypocrisy on your part, assuming you aren't actually pretending to be an ex-Muslim. She's clearly an activist, and that is similar to Malala. Malala was using the British media to attack the Taliban, and in fact she was pushed and supported by her father to do so. It was a noble effort to be sure, and the Taliban being religious fundamentalists punished her far more severely than the Israelis who are more sophisticated in pushing Zionism as a concept.

But this girl is fighting for a just cause every bit as much as Malala was. Both deserve your support, and for you to castigate her family while not doing the same for Malala just reeks of double standards.

Completely different situation...

Unless I'm unaware which I might be...did Malala's parents advocate violence and terror?...Malala was an activist and she got shot for it...she wasn't attacking soldiers nor was she throwing stones...and she was legitimately at risk...

Now in Ahed's case...I can't quite see the activism part?...her given role is to be filmed shouting and assaulting soldiers...with her family knowing full well that the soldier won't react...what's heroic about this exactly?...there is absolutely no risk involved here...

There's no comparison here between the two whatsoever...the reason the Tamimi's are being castigated here...is because they speak about the importance of children to the resistance...and that essentially is their 9 year old son throwing stones at soldiers (a duty)...or their daughter who for 5 years whose 'activism' is provoking soldiers on camera...without getting a response...

She assaulted a soldier...she got arrested...should be the end of the story...

There are plenty of Palestinians doing useful things...this is certainly not one of those examples...

The young lady is an inspiration and a hero in my view.

She is under occupation and has every right to resist the **** who are oppressing her and her people.

She slapped the IDF terrorist and it was great to see. They came at night and arrested her. Such are these cowards they are scared of a young girl.

Israeli soldiers killed Ahed Tamimi's cousin Musab today. Shot her cousin Mohammed in the face two weeks ago. Killed her uncle Rushdi in 2012, and killed her cousin Mustafa in 2011.But SHE faces up to ten years in jail for slapping an Israeli soldier.

Which person with any self respect would not want to resist an army who kills their family at will? Yet we people on this forum supporting occupation and barbarism in 2018.

In your opinion, are her punishments justified based on what you've gathered?

The Tamimi's filmed the Rushdi shooting if you wanna have a look...again have a look at how many children are being told to throw rocks at the soldiers...the arms used by the Israeli army are tear gas and rubber bullets...

Mohamed...rubber bullet during a protest and stone throwing...

Mustafa...hit in the face by a tear gas canister while throwing stones at a jeep...

In Musab's case...the initial suggestion is he might have been carrying a gun...not confirmed...

Which kinda brings me back to daddy Bassem...who calls stone throwing 'peaceful protest'...it's usually rocks and molotovs...it's not placards...tear gas and rubber bullets are used for dispersal...we see that in Iran right now...the same method was used by Pakistan during the sit in a couple of months ago...and if I remember right the 'peaceful' protesters were throwing rocks at police...

Stone throwing is a pointless exercise which achieves nothing...but according to Bassem:

“Yes, we use stones to protect our land and our kids,” he said. “It is part of our way of struggle.”

In what way does it protect their kids or their land for that matter?...he may quote Martin Luther King but his resistance is essentially sending kids out to throw stones at police...

Soldiers and police are protected in every country in the world...6 people died in Islamabad...and 250 were injured by police...i presume everyone here is asking for these policemen to be brought to justice too?...

But it's a lot easier to just drop a tweet which gives the impression that unarmed people were shot in cold blood...it's of course a tragedy that anyone has died...especially in doing something so pointless...

To put things in perspective a bit more...in 2014 there were over 18,000 stone throwing incidents by groups...so by and large most incidents don't end up anything fatal...

Attacking police is a crime everywhere...and in Ahed's case...she's kicked and punched an officer...if a policeman shot a member of my family and i went up to a policeman and punched him I would be arrested also...

I'm not suggesting Ahed has no reason to be upset or angry...but it's a shame how she's being used by her parents since she was 11...why isn't her parents going up to the officers and complaining?...why send a child and then film her?...

In your opinion, are her punishments justified based on what you've gathered?

It's against the law to punch and kick an officer...she's on film punching and kicking an officer...

You know the day after there was a Palestinian cartoon essentially portraying the officer as a wuss for not doing anything in response...the idea was to humiliate the army by sending a girl...who they knew wouldn't be touched by the officer...he was on film after all...

And yeh feel free to check out Ahlam Tamimi...how she gloats about killing unarmed civilians...not people with rocks...not people at a protest...but people eating pizza at a restaurant...7 children of whom were killed DELIBERATELY...her interviews are on youtube...she's a free woman because of the Gilad Shalit prisoner exchange...

Like I said...no prospect for peace at all...

lol. Are those in the West Bank bound by Zionist laws? The occupiers were on her land not theirs , she has a right to resist them from strolling around with guns on land which doesnt belong to them. Y

Like I said...no prospect for peace at all...

Correct. End of the day, stones aren't gonna do anything against guns and tanks. Israel has no intention of adhering to peace a two state solution.

Allah is just. Everyone will answer one day.

Those aren't officers, they're an occupying force on her land, her country. Moreover they killed her relatives, she's brave and principled for this.

Israel army is pretty lenient considering what other armies would do to someone like her.

Israel army is pretty lenient considering what other armies would do to someone like her.

Lenient or not ...in short to the posters here Israelis are fair game ...so even if they shoot someone who is armed and shooting them it is murder because they are an 'occupying' force ...ie the fact that the Palestinian leaderships and some people threaten them has no bearing at all ...

I mean KKWC has used the reservist argument to defend attacks on civilians before ...for all the sympathy for Ahed ...it's of no interest to anyone here that the aunt coordinated suicide attacks or Ahed's mum praised terrorists who killed civilians ...

Point that is often lost is that Israel exists ...and that's a reality ...they know the objective of their opponent is for it not to exist ...so they do what's necessary to maintain security ...

They gave Gaza away and Hamas took over ...of course they are going to stay in the West Bank ...it would be negligent not to ...

Will appreciate it

I answered the question...she's been charged with three things...preventing the soldier from doing his duty, hitting the soldier, and throwing rocks...all these things are offences...she hasn't denied doing them...and she's been charged accordingly...

She has since said she wants to die as a martyr...

So iyo...she should just be allowed to walk?...

I mean I am not fan of the Arabs and I'd prefer Pakistan to recognise Israel at some point but shaykh what are you smoking? A slap is nothing compared to what Israelis have been doing to Palestinians.

They were both resisting occupational powers, only difference is this Arab girl is resisting against the aggression and that obviously burns you up badly for some reason, that much is apparent in your last few threads in support of israel I support both Malala and this Palestinian girl equally, I feel their fight is just. May Baghwan give them both justice inshallah!

How was she punished based on those crimes ? and in your opinion was it justified, it's nothing to do with charged accordingly etc you're not a copper

When you cant debate, make up lies. What a civilian is in your mind is not the same in my view. Anyone who has been part of the occupation is not innocent and while the occupation is on-going they are IDF.

Well she has been charged...she hasn't been sentenced as yet...so what do you want me to comment on exactly?...whether she should get 10 years for the crime?...she won't get that...and no I don't think she should...

Should she have been arrested...yes...

Typical Zionist, when you cant debate, make up lies. What a civilian is in your mind is not the same in my view. Anyone who has been part of the occupation is not innocent and while the occupation is on-going they are IDF.

Exactly we differ on what a civilian is...so i'll ask you again...is a reservist a legitimate target or not?...

tbh she is a trouble maker and an attention seeker

feel sad for her parents and Palestinian activists using her as a pawn as part of their game

Victim blaming a child who has grown up under Occupation.

I’m a little confused by what you’ve said.

How is she a trouble maker and what do you think she should do against such a brutal regime?

Israel official doubted Palestinian protest icon, her family

JERUSALEM (AP) — A senior Israeli official on Wednesday said he led a secret investigation into 16-year-old Palestinian protest icon Ahed Tamimi and her family, in part because their appearance — including “blond-haired, freckled” children in “Western clothes” — made them seem less like “real” Palestinians.

The stunning comments by Michael Oren, a deputy minister and former ambassador to the United States, promptly drew accusations of racism from the family — the latest twist in a case that has turned into a public relations headache for Israel.

The case revolves around Israel’s handling of Ahed Tamimi, who was arrested on Dec. 19 for slapping two Israeli soldiers outside her West Bank home four days earlier.

Video of the scuffle quickly spread, giving Ahed worldwide attention. The girl, noticeable for her long blond curls, and her mother are now being held in jail. Ahed faces charges that carry up to 14 years in prison.

Oren told The Associated Press that he had led a classified parliamentary investigation into the Tamimis two years ago in which Israeli security agencies and diplomats participated.

The family has a long history of leading protests against Israeli policies in the West Bank that often turn into clashes with soldiers in their village of Nabi Saleh and Ahed has been involved in highly publicized scuffles with soldiers in the past.

Oren said his investigation looked into whether the protests were genuine or whether the family members were provocateurs, paid to send children to clash with soldiers.

Derisively calling the skirmishes caught on tape “Pallywood,” Oren claimed that “someone” was funding the unrest to harm Israel’s image, without providing evidence.

“The Tamimi family and those claiming to be part of the Tamimi family have been provoking Israeli soldiers for many, many years now,” he said. “The children were chosen on the basis of their external look, to look Western, freckled, and blond-haired.”

“They were dressed as Westerners,” he added. “They don’t dress the way children dress in the West Bank, for a very specific purpose: to get soldiers to react violently to them, to take pictures of this violence and to spread it around the world in order to delegitimize, discredit the state of Israel.”

He called it a “very sophisticated operation” that has succeeded in manipulating the Western press.

In an interview with Israeli Channel 10 TV, Oren claimed one boy appeared in different videos with a cast on one arm at one protest, and on his other arm at another protest, before disappearing from demonstrations altogether.

In a statement from his office, Oren said: “In discussions held in the committee, the issue of the family’s credibility was raised and if it really is a real family.”

Ahed’s father, Bassem Tamimi, called Oren’s investigation “silly and stupid” and said the investigation was racist.

“We, the Tamimi family, were here in Palestine before the creation of Israel, and we will stay,” he said. “Denying that Palestinians could be blond reflects racism in the Israeli society.”

Ahed has been celebrated by Palestinians as a national hero, and Israel’s treatment of her has drawn the attention of international activists, human rights groups and U.N. officials.

In the Dec. 15 video, she is seen approaching two soldiers standing outside her home. She yells at them, tells them to leave, then kicks and slaps them as they stand silently.

The family says the girl was upset because a young cousin had been shot in the head and seriously wounded with a rubber bullet fired by Israeli troops. But the altercation drew outrage in Israel over what some had seen as a humiliation of the military.

In a reflection of the tensions, Israel’s defense minister, Avigdor Lieberman, ordered the popular Army Radio station to ban any songs composed by Yehonatan Geffen, a leading journalist and songwriter, because of a poem he published that praised Ahed. Israel’s attorney general ruled that Lieberman has no authority over the station’s programming.

Opposition lawmaker Nachman Shai, a former chief military spokesman who is often critical of the government, acknowledged that the incident has become part of the war for the “hearts and minds” of people around the world.

But he said Israel had no choice in how to handle the case.

“She does not deserve to return home as if nothing happened,” he said. “You cannot ignore it, because that will cause other Palestinians to follow her.”

Tamimi was arrested in an overnight raid on Dec. 19, and her mother was arrested when she visited her daughter at a police station.

An Israeli military court has ordered they both be held for the duration of their trial — a process that is expected to take months. Ahed has been charged with 12 counts of attacking soldiers in five incidents going back to April 2016, while her mother has been charged with incitement. A cousin arrested with Ahed has been released on bail.

The family lawyer, Gaby Lasky, said the trial is scheduled to begin on Jan. 31, Ahed’s 17th birthday. She said she was hopeful the prosecutors would not seek the maximum 14-year sentence for the girl and would agree to a reduced sentence of several months.

Ahed is currently being held in a special prison wing for minors, where her conditions have improved, Lasky said. For the first week while she was interrogated, she said Ahed was not provided with a change of clothes or a coat, and threatened with the arrests of other family members if she didn’t talk.

Asked about Oren’s investigation, she said she was “ashamed” to hear a parliamentary committee was dealing with “wild conspiracy theories.”

Child Prisoner: Parliament Debate

We need your help! On Wednesday 7th February, Parliament will debate the military detention of Palestinian children by Israeli authorities. You can find information about the mistreatment of Palestinian child prisoners in the PSC Factsheet.

Israel is the only country in the world that systematically prosecutes children in military courts – between 500 and 700 each year. The Israel Prison Service revealed that an average of 204 Palestinian children have been held in custody every month since 2012.

Ill-treatment in the Israeli military detention system remains “widespread, systematic, and institutionalised throughout the process”. These were the conclusions of the UN Children’s Fund (UNICEF) report ‘Children in Israeli Military Detention Observations and Recommendations‘.

Palestinian children as young as 12 are routinely:

- Taken from their homes at gunpoint in night-time raids by soldiers.

- Blindfolded, bound and shackled.

- Interrogated without a lawyer or relative being present and with no audio-visual recording.

- Put into solitary confinement.

- Forced to sign confessions (often in Hebrew – a language they do not understand).

Please take a moment to send a message to your MP asking them to stand up for the rights of Palestinian children on Wednesday.

Israel/OPT: Palestinian child activist Ahed Tamimi sentenced to 8 months in prison

The continued imprisonment of Palestinian child activist Ahed Tamimi is a flagrant attempt to intimidate those who dare challenge the circumstances of the ongoing occupation, Amnesty International said today after she was sentenced to eight months and a 5,000 shekels fine (around US$ 1,400) with a three year suspended sentence after entering into a plea deal at Ofer military court in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

17-year-old Ahed Tamimi was accused of aggravated assault and 11 other charges after a video showing her shoving, slapping and kicking two Israeli soldiers in her home village of Nabi Saleh on 15 December 2017 went viral on Facebook.

“By sentencing Ahed to eight months in prison the Israeli authorities have confirmed yet again that they have no regard for the rights of Palestinian children, and have no intention to reverse their discriminatory policies. Under the Convention on the Rights of the Child, to which Israel is a state party, the arrest, detention or imprisonment of a child must be used only as a measure of last resort and for the shortest appropriate period of time,” said Magdalena Mughrabi, Amnesty International’s Deputy Director for the Middle East and Africa.

“Today’s sentence is another alarming example of the Israeli authorities’ contempt for their obligations to protect the basic rights of Palestinians living under their occupation, especially children. Ahed Tamimi is a minor. Nothing she did warrants her continued imprisonment and she must be released immediately.”

Ahed was convicted on four of the 12 charges against her including incitement, aggravated assault and two counts of obstructing Israeli soldiers. Her mother Nariman was sentenced to eight months in prison in addition to a fine of 6,000 shekels (around US$ 1,780) and a three-year suspended sentenced for assisting in assaulting a soldier, obstructing a soldier and incitement. Ahed’s cousin, Noor Tamimi, was fined 2,000 shekels (around US$500).

“The Israeli authorities must stop responding to relatively small acts of defiance with such disproportionately harsh punishments. By ruthlessly targeting Palestinians, including children, who dare challenge Israel’s oppressive occupation, the authorities are neglecting their responsibilities under international law as an occupying force.”

Hundreds of Palestinian children are prosecuted every year through Israeli juvenile military courts. Those arrested are systematically denied their rights and subjected to ill-treatment including in some cases physical violence. There are currently approximately 350 Palestinian children in Israeli detention.

Background

Ahed Tamimi was arrested on 19 December 2017 after her mother, Nariman Tamimi, also a prominent activist, posted the footage of her altercation with Israeli soldiers online. Nariman Tamimi was arrested later that day, while Ahed’s cousin, Nour Tamimi, was arrested the following morning. Nour was released on 5 January pending trial, and was sentenced today to the time she had already spent in prison.

Ahed confronted the soldiers amid a demonstration in Nabi Saleh against US President Donald Trump’s recent decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.

The incident took place on the same day that one of Ahed’s other cousin, 15-year-old Mohammad Tamimi, was hit in the head at close range by a rubber bullet fired by an Israeli soldier and sustained serious injuries.

Prominent Palestinian activist Ahed Tamimi is on the list of 30 Palestinian prisoners, all women and minors, slated to be released from Israeli jails today.

Tamimi was arrested some three weeks ago after posting on social media that Palestinians will “slaughter” settlers and “drink your blood.”

“Our message to the herds of settlers is that we are waiting for you in all the West Bank cities, from Hebron to Jenin,” Tamimi wrote. “We will slaughter you and you will say that what Hitler did to you was a joke, we will drink your blood and eat your skulls. Come on, we’re waiting for you.”

Tamimi became an icon of the Palestinian cause at age 16 after she was jailed for slapping an Israeli soldier. She served an eight-month sentence in an Israeli prison, and after she was released, went on a victory tour, crisscrossing Europe and the Middle East.

So far, the terror group Hamas has released a total of 61 Israeli hostages and 20 foreign hostages during the five days of the temporary truce. The original deal stipulated that the pause in fighting could be extended up to a total of 10 days, including the first four — if Hamas releases at least 10 additional hostages each day, with Israel freeing more Palestinian inmates at a ratio of three prisoners for each hostage.

Israel has so far freed 180 female and underage Palestinians serving time in Israeli prisons for security offenses, and is expected to release 30 more today, including Tamimi.
