James Anderson was involved in a heated exchange with umpire Kumar Dharmasena and India captain Virat Kohli on Day 2 of the fifth Test at The Oval.

The incident took place after Dharmasena gave Kohli not out after an appeal for leg-before by the English team off Anderson's bowling during India's first innings.

In the 29th over, Anderson hit Kohli on his pads and immediately appealed for a wicket. But Dharmasena declined the appeal after which the decision was reviewed. While the replays showed that the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps, Kohli was saved by the fact that review turned out to be umpire's call as the ball hit Kohli just outside the line of off stump.

Here's a recap of the appeal and review:

28.3 overs: J. ANDERSON TO V. KOHLI

Not Out! Kohli hangs on to his life and so frustrating for Anderson. He has bowled 254 balls to Kohli as of now and he is yet to get the Indian skipper out in this series. This one looked out though. Anderson bowled a full ball coming in with the swing after pitching. Kohli plays all over it and fails to connect. The English team cries out in an appeal but the umpire, after a lot of thinking, declines the request. Jimmy is convinced and so is his captain. They take the review. The replays roll in. The impact is umpire's call and that is what saved him else it would have been curtains for Kohli. England does not lose their review but Anderson has a go at the umpire for no reason. He desperately wants to get one up on Kohli for sure. The match referee might request his presence soon!

Anderson was frustrated with Dharmasena's decision and that led to a exchange of words between the umpire and the bowler and later between Anderson and Kohli.

Anderson, who dismissed Kohli four times during India's tour of England in 2014, is yet to dismiss the India captain in the series. Something which could have led to the unruly behaviour on the part of Anderson.

Including the delivery on which the appeal was made, Anderson had bowled 254 deliveries to Kohli in the series without dismissing him even once.

Meanwhile, Kohli who scored a mere 134 runs in the 10 innings in the 2014, has improved his record in the country drastically.

In the four matches of the ongoing series ahead of The Oval Test, Kohli had scored 544 runs at an average of 68.

Anderson, however, took two wickets immediately after failing to dismiss the India captain. He removed Cheteshwar Pujara and Ajinkya in the space of two overs. Anderson is now heading the list of bowlers with most wickets against India in Test cricket. He went past Muttiah Muralitharan (105 wickets) after picking Pujara's wicket.

At the time of publishing this article, India were 109/4, 223 runs behind England's 1st innings total of 332.

No doubt Kohli has scored 500+ runs and hasn't got out to Anderson but Kohli has been most lucky a batsman could ever be. He has got one or two chances in every innings he has played in this series.

Nothing wrong with a bit of aggression. It's right up my alley!

Yes, but the good players make it count

It’s a good trade off for losing 5 of 5 tosses in this series. I bet kohli would take those tosses over those lucky instances any day.

Hahaha Delusion is high, As if batting 1st india would score 500 every time, Even in the match they won they got lucky because conditions were good for batting, but if they batted 1st in other matches they wouldn't have crossed 200.

Very common in England.

Chanceless innings are quite rare even for English players. When that ball is moving, you're prone to get rapped on the pads or see a ball edge to or past the slip cordon.

Without a doubt, he's looked the best batsman from either side.

How is an apparent statistic delusional. We KNOW the teams who bat first have almost a 5 fold chance of winning the test. It’s not some assertion I’m making.

I saw the whole thing. The altercation was between Jimmy and Dharmasena the umpire. I do not know why Kohli got involved in it and start gesturing so wildly.. it seemed to me he was annoyed thst jimmy was annoyed over the decision not going in his favor! I mean which bowler doesnt feel aggrieved over something like that?

Jimmy has last chance to dismiss kohli in 2ndinnings thats why Jimmy desperately want kohli wicket
He has troubled kohli enough.. he will soon be the highest wicket taking fast bowler in history of test cricket.. i dont think he will lose much sleep over kohli.. he has played an integral role in blanking india in this series

Jimmy is 3 wickets short of McGrath's record. Should break it in 2nd inning.

Pathetic from Anderson if he did get into an exchange with the umpire. Match referee should hand out demerit points.

You guys ain't seen nothing yet. 5 tests in England have been (expectedly) very sedate.

Just wait for a single test to conclude in Australia...

Mo Ali played and missed as many balls in the 1st innings at Oval as Kohli has in the entire series.

Apart from Root and KLR every batsman in this series has been lucky.

The bowling from both sides has been top drawer.

No Jimmy hasn't been effective at all in this series the only difference between india and england is samcurran and buttler if you watch entire series closely

The Indians are all right. Never any nastiness when they visit.

Games against South Africa and New Zealand are always very pleasant. There have been one or two rare incidences with England but it's been good most of the time. Now Australia is a different story altogether.

Jimmy anderson is officially eliminated from the list of bowlers who trouble kohli.
Kohli is no longer his bunny.

England fast bowler James Anderson has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during the second day of the fifth Test against India at The Oval.

Anderson was found to have breached Article 2.1.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to “showing dissent at an umpire’s decision during an International Match”.

In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to the disciplinary record of the fast bowler, for whom it was the first offence since the introduction of the revised Code in September 2016.

The incident happened in the 29th over of India’s innings when Anderson snatched his cap and jumper from umpire Kumar Dharmasena and then spoke to him in an aggressive manner following an unsuccessful LBW review against Virat Kohli. Anderson admitted the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by Andy Pycroft of the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Match Referees and, as such, there was no need for a formal hearing.

The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Kumar Dharmasena and Joel Wilson, third umpire Bruce Oxenford, all from the Emirates Elite Panel of ICC Umpires, and fourth umpire Tim Robinson.

Level 1 breaches carry a minimum penalty of an official reprimand, a maximum penalty of 50 per cent of a player’s match fee, and one or two demerit points.

The decision from Dharmesena was pretty poor to be honest, it was a dead straight ball that Kohli missed and it really should have been given out. Pretty much everyone in the stadium (English and Indian) was expecting it to be out until Dharmasena shook his head.

When the bowler thinks he has the best player in the world trapped in front of the middle stump, and then it’s given not out AND then not backed on review (the ball hit Kohli on off stump, not outside) it is understandable that Anderson got a bit brassed off.

Fair play to him for admitting the offence and taking the sanction, because it was undoubtedly a conduct violation, but he has my support after another Kohli-centric umpiring decision in this series (there was another one in the previous match).

Australia could have been a different story. But this time around I doubt that because there is no Warner in their XI and there is no Smith as well and that whole fiasco in the SA tour must have put them on backfoot.

The way I see it I am not expecting too much of give and take from Australians when India tour Australia during the end of the year.

There will be one or two heated conversation amidst the series but dont think it will be much of a controversy to talk about.
