England and Nottinghamshire batsman James Taylor’s career has been sadly brought to an end by a serious heart condition.

Taylor originally withdrew from last week’s fixture against Cambridge MCCU with what was believed to be a viral condition.

However, specialist scans revealed yesterday that the 26-year-old has the very serious heart condition, ARVC (Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Arrhythmia).

Taylor played the first of his seven Tests against South Africa in 2012 and was part of the England team that won famously against the same opposition last winter.

The middle-order batsman also played 27 ODIs and was captain for England’s trip to Ireland last May.

England Team Director Andrew Strauss said: "It is both shocking and saddening to hear that James' career has been cut short in such a sudden and unexpected manner.

“Throughout his career, he has constantly impressed with his determination to make the absolute most of his ability, and it is immensely cruel that such a hard working player will be unable to fulfil his great potential in the international arena.

“The ECB will work closely with Nottinghamshire and together we will do everything possible to help James through this difficult period, and aid him in his recovery."

Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell added: "Myself and all of James’ teammates and colleagues are terribly sad to hear this news, which comes as a big shock to us all.

“He is a model professional, the most hard working I’ve ever known in cricket, making it all the more difficult to accept that his career has been cut short in this way.

“It goes without saying that he has the very best wishes of us all in terms of recovering from his operation, and that we are looking forward to seeing him back at Trent Bridge when he is fit and able.”

Yea just saw it on the ECB facebook page. Very sad news!

Only 26 years old and with an average of 42 over a short ODI career so far he certainly was a very promising prospect. Wish him all the best and hope he makes a speedy recover back to full health

Damn, that's very saddening to hear. Thought he had a lot of potential :(

This is so saddening! He was such a promising player! Was excited to see him and Root form England's backbone.

Oh God!!! Extremely sad news. So young and talented. Had such a bright cricketing career ahead of him. I hope he gets well soo .

Big, big shame. He was a great prospect who could have been England's second best batsman for years to come.

Largely underutilized in the last few years.

However, life is more important than cricket.

Quite shocking.

You don't expect that sort of thing to happen to a bloke his age.

He's made the right decision though. All the best James

Im shocked...

I was always a massive fan of the guy and thought he could be Englands permanent number 4 in ODIs and tests. He was going to become a great player. Really sad news

Shocking news.

But as people have said, cricket takes a backseat in such situations. Wishing James all the best for a quick recovery.

wow, this is a loss to cricket, the guy could have been a class player, been fan of his for a while

The poor guy has dodged a bullet. It appears that he has the same condition which almost killed Fabrice Muamba on the pitch - and rather like the one that actually did kill Marc-Vivien Foe in the middle of an international match.

There is no way back in terms of cricket. We must simply hope that the pacemaker does its job and that he lives a normal life span.

very sad to hear this. He looked like a top prospect for England particularly in Test Cricket him and Root could've been the bedrock of the English Middle Order. My condolences go out to him and I wish him the best in his future endeavours.

Shocked really.

Was a very promising player for England, especially was their best player in spinning conditions imo.

Sad to see that his career has been cut short, but life is more important than anything else and he has taken the right decision. Wish him the best for his life.

Awful news, stunned. Feel desperately for the lad, he had such a promising future ahead of him.

I hope the ECB can find an alternative role for him in the game instead.

Very sad news. I wish that medical science would advance significantly within a few years and we would see him back on pitch.

Extremely sad, really did expect him to have a big kick on and become one of our best batsman. Dreadful for someone to be forced out of the sport they love like this.

Very sad to hear this news. He was a fine player and a real prospect in the test and ODI side. A big blow for England, at least he got to live his dream and I hope he finds a way to still be involved in cricket.

Horrible news..sad for him...but health is more important hope for a speedy recovery.

What a terrible terrible news :(

Wish him all the best for the future

This is really sad news shocked to see this he is a talented youngster.wish him all the best for future and get well soon

Very sad news. Easily the best English batsman after Root! Her's wishing him a speedy recovery..

Sad news thought he had real potential seeing as I live in England I have seen him bat in many domestic games on tv thought he should have been playing for England years ago. Hope he recovers and good luck to him in whatever he does

It's a very sad time, and leaves a gap in the England middle order as they go into Tests against Sri Lanka's puny bowling attack in a month, followed by Pakistan's much tougher attack in July.

James Taylor has played in England's last five Tests, batting at number 5 and scoring:

14 and 24
7 and 2 not out
0 and 27
70 and 42..........in the Tests v South Africa, immediately preceded by.....

76 and 2 v Pakistan.

I feel desperately sorry for poor Taylor.

As an Englishman, I'm pretty confident of battering Sri Lanka next month. I'm not so sanguine about Pakistan, because Taylor's exit leaves us with the following batting order:

1. Alastair Cook - absolutely fine!
2. VACANT
3. Nick Compton - not quite Test class
4. Joe Root - again, absolutely fine
5. VACANT
6. Ben Stokes - realistically, batting one position too high in the order.

It strikes me that we will have to give the wicketkeeping gloves back to Jos Buttler and bat him at 7 so that we can use Jonny Bairstow as a specialist batsman at 5. But he is technically extremely suspect.

Or alternatively, you could feel happy for Taylor that he has been diagnosed early too.

It is truly shocking news about Taylor. I'm glad that they picked this up before anything more serious happened.

Think Hales will be given the Sri Lanka series, and they'll probably recall Ballance to bat at 5 if he does well in the early Championship matches for Yorkshire. Buttler's IPL sojourn might count against a test recall at this stage.

Vince will presumably be the other one in the running with Ballance if he can get some scores. Bell is currently batting for Warks and is 21*, if he absoloutely dominates in the first few games I wonder if they'd consider going back to him.

Sad circumstances, but Bell has a good chance of a recall if Ballance doesn't make any runs. Think Vince has more chance of replacing Hales as he bats in the top order for Hants. He had a horrible season last year, so they might wait before he finds form over the next couple of months before considering him for the test team. This opening bugbear will blight England for a while, I reckon. Their best long-term hope was Root, but they understandably don't want to burden him too much.

Vince has actually mostly batted at 4 for Hampshire although slotted himself up to 3 in his only innings this season so far thinking that would be his best shot at an England place. Think he'd have to out perform both Bell and Ballance though to get a spot v SL. Also just took Trotts wicket with his bowling :D.

Was always my impression that he batted at 3 or opened the batting. Maybe it was because he does so in limited overs cricket. Anyway, I definitely agree Bell and Ballance are ahead at this stage.

Very sad news indeed. He was one of the most promising players in world cricket and I am sad that he won't be representing his country again. Cricket is just a game though and so more than that, I am really sorry to hear of his condition. I really hope that this is something that can be managed and that he can live a long and normal life.

James need to get some rest and have a nice, HEARTy meal so he can recover and play some cricket again!!!

My HEART bleeds for James.

Making puns over someone having a serious illness that has quite probably just ended his sporting career and that notably nearly killed an English footballer on live television just a few years back?

Very sad news. An excellent cricketer and a really nice guy.

Had the pleasure of meeting him several times and he was always pleasant and very friendly.

Really sad news and hope he makes a full recovery to health, its a shame he probably wont be able to play cricket again.

What a shame, really enjoyed his batting and he was more than capable of being the next Joe Root or Williamson.

Hope he fights this out and can once again bat.

Get well soon James !

I saw this earlier today, very depressing, he is a very good prospect and he was gonna play for England for another 12-13 years.

This is why one should be fortunate to live with an able, body and mind. Imagine putting all the hard work, in the gym and in the nets ? Imagine finally making a name for yourself and then this happens ?

Feel very sorry for him. Kieswetter had an eye injury and had to retire early. Two promising players lost due to ill fate.

He can't play again. He will have a defibrillator installed to regulate his heart beat and can't play any competitive sport again

terrible news . he had a promising career ahead of him. wish him the best.

Very sad. Guy has serious potential with the bat. Was set to be a mainstay for the next 6+ years.

Hope he finds some other way to channel his love for the game.

Extremely sad news. All those hours on the cricket field and nets for nothing. Just gotta feel for him.

Just saw this now.

Really sad as he had a good start to his career. Even so, I hope he recovers well and manages to have success in whatever he does now.

All the cricket players who take representing their country for granted should look at how a potential England great in james taylor has lost this honour out of nowhere.

There is no one more deserving than James to have a good cricketing career.

My heart goes out for him, i really wish him all the happiness. Take care champ.

Sad news. He was making his mark on the Test squad as well as cementing a place in the ODIs too. Even though we're gonna be playing England soon it's a real shame that this guy isn't there. Huge blow for England, as well as the cricketing world.

Poor guy. He was the one for future but hopefully he can overcome his condition. Life is more precious than a cricket career.

Wow. Very sad news. His life has been turned upside down in one day. Best wishes for the future. Huge loss for England.

So sad. Hopefully he can live a normal, happy and long life. I know its a long shot but hopefully someday he can play again (unlikely). Still life is a lot more important than sport.

Saddened by this news. I felt that his England career was just about to take off, and that he would do well in India.

He was one of my favourite players, very busy at the crease.

At least they found out before it was too late...

Sad news. But I'm also happy that his condition was diagnosed before something happened to him whilst playing. Life is way more important than cricket.

A gutsy, underutilized player.. Quite sad news this

With hope he'll be able to find a job, perhaps in cricket, following the disaster he has unfortunately now found himself in. Has been in the sky studio a few times in the last I believe so maybe he'll be able to find some work there once he's recovered.

I hope he lands a long contract in Sky to make a career as a commentator. Read Muamba is pursuing journalism too.

Also some good psychological counseling too. I can only imagine how hard it must be for him when something for which he worked so hard all his life vanishes within a day.

Sad news.

Always thought he should be in the ODI xi for England and liked him as a batsman.

Hopefully all goes well.

Geez.

Was an awesome prospect.

Hope he gets better as that is most important.

Sad news this, lot more important stuff in life than just cricket or your profession.

This has to be the worst cricketing news to have hit the ground in the recent days.

Such a talent he was and always backed him and should've played more than he did for England but it just wasn't meant to be I suppose.

Can't imagine the feeling here on out from him.

Few months down the road seeing his contemporaries score runs or face a difficult situation where they're 3 or 4 wickets down, and he'd be cursing everything thinking "Damn it, if I was there, I could've saved the game" or if a year goes by thinking "I would've had 1000 runs by now"... to work so damn hard, to reach the intl stage only to have it all ended like this must be incredibly painful.

Now he'll just have to blend in with his society and become an ordinary citizen with a 5-9 job after he set himself up for a potentially glorious career.

I saw his instagram pic, and he was smiling in his hospital bed. I expected a sober expression, but no, this guy was smiling brightly. Good attitude to have, hope he finds success still.

Extremely sad news, he had such a promising career ahead of him. Gotta feel for the guy.

To all the doctors on PP, I know that this condition doesn't really have a cure, does this permanently rule him out of playing cricket or is there possibility he can come back?

Wow shocking! Best of luck for future hopefully stays connected to the game indirectly.

No possibility. There is no cure, but the condition can be managed through carefully managing his lifestyle. I believe he'd be asked to give up all strenuous activities even including things like running on a treadmill. Really sad and I can't imagine what he's going through right now.
