So both are fantastic openers who have helped modernize LOi batting for England.

I believe both have similar stats in ODI’s. Roy averages 38 with a 105 SR whilst Hales has a 37 average at a SR of 95.

The question is who do you think is better?

Hales without a doubt is a better hitter of the ball and a clean striker. Destructive on his day as we have experienced ourselves...

However, Roy is a better stroke player with a better balance and technique. Definitely more orthodox but still maintains similar stats to Hales and keeps up with the modern game.

Personally I prefer Roy and if he were to make his Test debut for England - I would think he would have a longer test career than Hales.

Thoughts?

Neither are fit for Test Arena. They are good LOI batsmen whom I dont see doing well in Asia if it spins.

Root, Buttler and Bairstow are bigger deal than these two.

Don't think Roy is a fair for test cricket.

I'll take Roy over Hales in LO though.

Roy is more talented & natural stroke maker.
Hales is gritty & has better temperament imo.

I prefer Roy over hales in odis & hales over roy in t20s.
I don't think roy should get chance in test cricket ahead of other deserving young cricketers like joe clarke, dan Lawrence, abell etc.

Neither are fit for Test cricket, especially outside home conditions.

In LO cricket however,Roy is better kin my opinion.

Roy and Bairstow as openers + Hales at no.3 is quite the top order.

Hales is a bigger match winner. He's also capable to play marathon innings.

Jason Roy's highest score in ODI's is higher than Hales'. Roy also have more 150's in ODI's than Hales.

This is Englands World Cup 11 followed by Alex Hales, Mark Wood, Tom Curran and Sam Curran

That can't be right. Hales recently scored a 180+ score. Did Roy score more than that?

I think you are mixing them up.

Roy scored 180 vs Australia at the beginning of this year. Hales highest score is 171 which he made against us in August 2016 (when England piled on a record 444 runs!)

I think Roy is better but both are equally destructive on their day. The reason I think Roy is better is because as a bowler, I'd rather bowl to Hales, I feel he has more weaknesses that can be exposed compared to Roy.

Roy is better because he doesn’t get bogged down. If you don’t get him out, it is almost impossible to keep him quiet.

Hales is very good but he can struggle to get going against tight bowling at times.
