England batter Jonny Bairstow has been ruled out of the third Test against South Africa and the Twenty20 World Cup after sustaining a possible broken left leg while playing golf on Friday.

The 32-year-old slipped walking to a tee box and will see a specialist to ascertain the extent of the injury.

Bairstow confirmed he will need surgery on his Instagram account.

Nottinghamshire's Ben Duckett has been added to the squad for the series-deciding Test at the Kia Oval.

The Yorkshireman has been in brilliant form in 2022, scoring 1,061 runs and six centuries in 10 Tests, and remains a key part of England's white-ball teams.

Earlier on Friday he was named in England's squad for the T20 World Cup in Australia, which begins for England on 22 October, with managing director Rob Key confirming Bairstow was set to open the batting.

Instead, a replacement for the 15-man group must be found, with the England and Wales Cricket Board confirming that an announcement will be made in due course.

Ex-England spinner Alex Hartley, speaking on BBC Two, said: "It's devastating news, he has been so good for England this summer. To sustain a freak injury playing golf is such a blow for England, but more importantly for Bairstow."

With Bairstow missing, his Yorkshire team-mate Harry Brook could be in line to make his Test debut against South Africa. The 23-year-old has been part of the England squad throughout the summer and will now compete with left-hander Duckett for a place in the XI.

Duckett, 27, is also an option to replace Bairstow in the World Cup squad. He is one of three batters included in the touring party to take on Pakistan later in September not named in the tournament squad.

Step forward, Harry Brook.

Even more pressure on 66 now.....

Didn't think things could get any worse for England going into the T20 World Cup. But seems like they just did...

Nah. They still have solid batting line up.

Buttler
Salt
Malan

Willey/sam curran
Woakes/Jordan/wood
Rashid
Topley

Bairstow is a big loss , he makes a very strong impact and can win a match on own.

Big loss for India losing a classy player like Jonny. Don't know how anyone can break a leg playing Golf!:inzi2

Its a good batting line-up. But not nearly as dangerous as it would have been with Bairstow and a firing Morgan and Roy.

Salt and Brook are largely untested. And Malan is highly overrated in my opinion. He's the kind of batter who can easily go out there and play and 40 off 39 and damage the teams chances of getting to a big total.

They had bairstow in the last world t20 and still lost in the semis. Considering the plethora of white ball batsmen England produce, they will easily find a replacement.

Test cricket is the bigger concern. Whatever chances England had in Pakistan are now severely diminished.

The Pakistan-England test series is after the World Cup.

Jonny Bairstow: England cricketer out until 2023 after breaking leg in golf accident

Jonny sustained the injury last month after slipping during a round of golf and will miss the T20 World Cup in Australia and his country's subsequent Test series in Pakistan

England's Jonny Bairstow has announced he will not play again this year after undergoing successful surgery on a broken leg and dislocated ankle.

The 33-year-old, who sustained the injury last month after slipping during a round of golf, will miss the T20 World Cup in Australia and his country's subsequent Test series in Pakistan.

"The actual injury was as such... a broken fibula in 3 places which required a plate, I dislocated my ankle which in turn meant I did my syndesmosis joint and lateral ligament along with a couple more bits," he posted on Instagram. "All in all I have done a proper job on it!

"Anyway... on the positive side the operation went well and I am now three weeks post surgery and my staples have been removed. It's now all about swelling prevention and getting my ankle moving once again. These next few weeks/couple of months are the key to the recovery.

"As for a time scale on return to play I'm afraid it is too early to say, the first targets in mind are getting me back on my two feet again and making sure it's right.

"One thing is for sure and that is I shall not be partaking in anything more during 2022...however I cannot wait for what 2023 holds!!"
