Manchester United are set to appoint Jose Mourinho as their new manager, BBC Sport understands.

It is believed a deal with the 53-year-old Portuguese was agreed in principle before United's FA Cup final win against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

With United failing to qualify for the Champions League under Louis van Gaal, the Old Trafford hierarchy is thought to have decided a change is required.

Mourinho has been out of work since he was sacked by Chelsea in December.

The club plan to announce his arrival early next week after telling Van Gaal, 64, his reign has come to an end.

In the post-match news conference following United's FA Cup win, the Dutchman said: "I show you the cup and I don't discuss it [my future] with my friends of the media, who already sacked me for six months. Which manager can do what I have done?"

When pressed on whether he will be at Old Trafford as manager of United next season, he replied: "I hope to see you. I don't want to talk about about leaving this club."

The Dutchman still has one season remaining on his three-year deal, but despite spending £250m on new players, his tenure has disappointed many fans, the club finishing fourth and then fifth in the Premier League.

Van Gaal's grip on his job has seemed increasingly fragile this season, with Mourinho known to covet the task of masterminding a revival at United three years after legendary former manager Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down.

The Portuguese was at heavyweight boxer David Haye's win in London on Saturday evening but repeatedly declined to comment on whether he was about to succeed Van Gaal.

Mourinho is one of the game's most successful coaches, winning three league titles in his two spells at Stamford Bridge, as well as guiding Porto and Inter Milan to Champions League victories in 2004 and 2010 respectively.

He also led Real Madrid to the Spanish La Liga title in 2012, and his arrival will mean a mouthwatering resumption of his rivalry with former Barcelona manager Pep Guardiola. The Spaniard will take over at United's arch-rivals Manchester City this summer.

Having sacked previous manager David Moyes just 10 months after he succeeded Ferguson, United's executive vice chairman Ed Woodward was desperate for Van Gaal to see out his contract.

Some senior figures at United were also known to have serious reservations about the prospect of the controversial Mourinho, with some preferring Ryan Giggs as an alternative.

The Welshman, who made a record 963 appearances for the club, took over as manager on an interim basis in April 2014 following the sacking of Moyes, and was understood to be keen on the job.

In February however, BBC Sport revealed that United had held talks with Mourinho's representatives, and they have now come to fruition.

Woodward - and United's American owners, the Glazer family - still hoped Van Gaal would lead the club to a top four finish, and up until last month Mourinho's advisers were concerned the club might remain loyal to the Dutch coach.

But fans were not convinced by Van Gaal's tactics. The club's 49 goals in the Premier League this season was United's lowest total since 1989-90, coincidentally a season that also ended with an FA Cup final win over Crystal Palace.

There were occasional high points, not least Van Gaal's theatrical dive in front of the dug-outs during the 3-2 win over Arsenal in February as he accused the Gunners of diving.

But since collecting only three points in six games at the end of 2015, Van Gaal has been under intense pressure.

He has accused the media and former players of "sacking him", and cited injuries as the reason why United have been unable to sustain a title challenge.

Nevertheless, Van Gaal's side still had Champions League qualification in their own hands 14 minutes from the end of their penultimate Premier League game at West Ham, only to concede two late goals, lose 3-2 and allow Manchester City to claim the fourth qualifying slot.

And, after members of the United hierarchy suggested in December that the season was 80% about the Premier League, it is the failure to qualify for the Champions League that has appeared to seal Van Gaal's fate.

Despite his track record, some will question United's decision to appoint Mourinho.

He was sacked by Chelsea in December just seven months after leading them to the Premier League title, with their season overshadowed by a spectacular slump in form and issues off the pitch that included a public fallout with club doctor Eva Carneiro.

Ultimately however, United appear to have decided it is a risk worth taking.

Mourinho has never hidden his admiration for United, and for Ferguson. Now it seems he will have the opportunity to follow in his footsteps.

The appointment will mean some long overdue issues can be dealt with, not least whether the club's second longest-serving player Michael Carrick should be awarded a new contract.

It remains to be seen what Giggs will do.

Having served under Moyes and Van Gaal, the prospect of continuing his apprenticeship under a third United boss may not appeal.

It remains to be seen whether the club can find an alternative role for their most decorated player.

Giggs would not be short of offers if he decided to join the management ranks.

But many of the Welshman's former team-mates - most recently close friend Gary Neville at Valencia - have not found management easy.

Good appointment for Manchester United. Although I'm a little surprised that they are hiring someone who goes against the ethos and beliefs of the club. Lets see how he does. Can't wait for him vs klopp, and when he faces pep

Seemed like it was bound to happen. As someone that isn't really into football, I'm glad he's back in the PL, adds a bit of entertainment.

I've a bad feeling about Jose. There are many people at the club such as Sir Bobby Charlton, Sir Alex, Giggs who don't like him and want him as the manager. And I'm pretty sure that there are players in our team who don't like him either. I just hope we don't get a Chelsea like situation where the players are so obviously not playing for him but I just have a feeling that he would do something which would **** off a lot of players.

He will wreck you , but before that he will win a fair few trophies

Depends on the individual if that's worth the cost

That's my worry. He normally stays at a club for three years. First year, we will challenge. Second year, we would probably win the title and then third year, he will probably get sacked after destroying us.

Thats fine. Kick him out after 3 years and give giggs the team. Its the 4th season he struggles

Manchester United vs. Manchester City

Jose Mourinho vs. Pep Guardiola

We have come full circle. :D

I'm not so sure about Jose or Giggs. Giggs won't be at United next season if Jose comes in which would be sad as he has been at the club since 1990. But Giggs does need some managerial experience before managing United so I think he should start applying for jobs right now.

It's obvious that Man United fans have unreasonably high expectations given their past success.

Mourinho will need to turn things around quickly as I doubt there will be much patience.

It's obvious that Man United fans have unreasonably high expectations given their past success.

How is top 4 football unreasonably high for Manchester United? It's by far (by about £800m in fact) the biggest club in English football, it has the biggest budget in English football, it makes more money than any club in England so its far from unreasonable to expect a minimum of CL football.

Can't believe that this guy would be the manager of my team. I've to support this eye poking thug. I'm absolutely devastated by LVG's sacking but it was coming. I wish him all the best for the future. I hope Jose doesn't destroy the youngsters that LVG brought in such as Lingard, Martial, Timbo, CBJ, Rashford and actually gives youth a chance for once. And hopefully he has learnt a bit of class since that whole Eva Canero thing.

Must say as a Chelsea fan; it will be fascinating to watch this from the opposite perspective for once. :D

But we know in all sports it doesn't necessarily work like that - as Leicester just proved.

Don't really know whether Jose will work for United or not ..but won't do worse than LVG...Always better to see traditional clubs Like united Arsenal Liverpool doing well instead of plastic clubs like Chelsea or City

LVG had to go.Even though I don't support any PL team,I watched the English season quite keenly.I hated LVG second most after Brendan Rodgers, who Liverpool sacked midway through the season.LVG's style of play is not suited to a big club like ManU.

Eagerly looking forward to seeing how Manchester United's fans react to Mourinho's style of play.

Shall also be interesting to see how Jose handles the rather young United squad as he's tended to favour experience over potential in the past.

Mourinho’s United move hits snag over rights to his name

José Mourinho’s appointment as Manchester United manager may be complicated by the fact that Chelsea still own the trademark of his name.

The Portuguese is expected to be appointed at Old Trafford this week following talks with his agent, Jorge Mendes, in London, but after agreeing personal terms United must now address the fact that Chelsea own the rights to his name.

The European Union’s Intellectual Property Database confirms that ‘José Mourinho’ is registered as a trademark of Chelsea Football Club Limited. The application was received in March 2005 during Mourinho’s first season at the club. It was registered the following year and Chelsea’s ownership of the name is only due to expire in 2025. The 53-year-old’s signature is also trademarked by Chelsea, having been registered in January 2006.

Mourinho has left Chelsea twice since then and taken charge of both Inter Milan and Real Madrid. The trademarking of his name was not a barrier to him managing either of those clubs and it is not expected to be one in United’s case either.

A number of other conflicts of interest must also be resolved before the appointment can be confirmed. Mourinho and United each have different official watch sponsors - Hublot and Bulova respectively – while Mourinho also has a partnership with Jaguar, the car manufacturer, while United’s main shirt sponsor is competitor Chevrolet.

No pressure, Jose!

The whole agreement process is taking so long that there will be absolutely no surprise/excitement factor when it does actually happen.

Awkward moment for United fans - he has gone from overrated to the best in the world in a few months.

Not sure what United fans are looking forward to - Guardiola will continue to outclass him to the bone.

No one said he was overrated, just that his tendency of falling out with his staff and his need to play politics wherever he went might be a concern. When you give him the keys to the kingdom he ends up doing what he did at Inter and Porto. Guardiola had the best club side ever assembled and he still managed to compete with them and win a league title. Tactically he's as good if not better than Pep because he actually adapts to different situations and oppositions.

Expect him to wind up Arsene " Expert in failure" Wenger at some point during the season.;-)

I'm the only United fan whose opinion on him has not changed. Always hated him, may be a good manager but how he falls out with his stuff and how he makes so man excuses really angers me and I'm really annoyed that he is the new manager. He doesn't care about fans either, he's gonna sell Mata again, rather have David Moyes back

I wonder if Wenger be able to get his first win against Mourinho.
So far he's failed in 13 attempts... :razzaq

Same here. I don't like the guy and I think LVG was harshly treated. Still I'm ready to back but given the hype that he has got so far from United fans, he better win the league in his first season or I'll be on his back.

Arsenal fans like Mamoon and Hasan worried because their daddy is back to haunt them again :misbah

:)))

Forget about Guardiola, you will see him get outclassed by Mourinho even with your tinted glasses on.

until then you need to worry about your team, which will turn into a midtable team and your manager who has become a specalist in failure. worry son worry. Times going from bad to worse for you.

Say goodbye to your young players. I wonder if we will see Rashford get more than 5 games next season.

United sold their soul, hiring tactically outdated and past it Jose shows their desperation.

Attacking football and youth is what Man United has been about, goodbye to both now.

Same daddy whose players didn't give a damn about him last season and got him sacked in the most humiliating fashion. :misbah

You are right about us selling our soul. Jose probably won't give youth the chance but I disagree that he doesn't play attacking football. He can play both ways. I mean you guys should know this better than anyone as he trashed Arsenal 6-0 on your 'great' manager's 1000 game in charge. You can't score 6 goals if you are playing defensive football.

And Jose might be tactically outdated but he is definitely more up to date with modern football than your 'great' manager who is still living in the 90s.

Who said Wenger is not outdated? He is finished at this level. Really don't see him winning the league again, but he is still and always will be good enough for a top 4 finish no matter what.

Please forget Arsenal getting out of the top 4 like Man United.

I wonder if Wenger be able to get his first competitive win against Mourinho.

Fixed. :mv

A victory for Arsenal in the 2015 Community Shield was some consolation for Wenger, but Mourinho will be eager to preserve his unbeaten record in competitive games.

I really hope he turns around things, being one of the richest clubs in the world to not finish in top 4 also is pretty disastrous, especially with the rich recent history we have..

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho has signed a new contract until 2020, with the option of another year.

The 54-year-old Portuguese's previous deal at Old Trafford was due to expire in 2019.

He said he was "delighted" that United "feel and trust that I am the right manager for this great club for the foreseeable future".

He added: "I would like to say a big thank you to the owners and to [chief executive Ed] Woodward."

Mourinho, appointed as Louis van Gaal's successor in May 2016, won the EFL Cup and Europa League in his first season.

This season United are second in the Premier League, behind runaway leaders Manchester City, with the club still in the Champions League and FA Cup.

"We have set very high standards - winning three trophies in one season - but those are the standards I expect my teams to aim for," Mourinho added.

"We are creating the conditions for a brilliant and successful future for Manchester United. I love my players and it is a pleasure to know that we are going to be together for at least the next three years."
