What's new

Kane Williamson - the best batting prospect to come out of New Zealand?

He does look good. Very impressed by those late cuts against Stokes, though he couldn't get away with them on a track with any bounce.

You do know that London and Shahjah are not in the West Indies right?

I don't care about test matches in UAE where FTBs like :hafeez score big hundreds. His only series away from home in the last 18 months has been in West Indies . And this is just the first test in Eng so let's wait till the end of the series.

Its only his first innings in England and he has almost passed Kohli's 134 runs in 10 innings in England.

Has a match saving ton against SA
But was less than mediocre in rest of the matches.. And no one can forget the horror show when Nz went to tour Safrica.. Gotta be more consistent

That was a tumultuous time for NZ cricket and he was young in his career.

His last 15 tests he has 14 50+ scores and is averaging 350 or something so far this year. Id say his consistency is getting up there.

Not denying his potential.. That's why I said would like to seem him perform more consistently against tough bowling units.. His ultimate test will be to perform against SA in SA..

He yet again showed why he is one the best these days. The best thing about him is that he succeeds in every format with proper cricket. You need to be very gifted to be able to that these days. hats off to Kane W.

Quite hypocritical of you to take a dig at Kohli who happened to fail on his first tour to Eng and otherwise has a great record everywhere else he's toured and then go onto to make excuses for KW's first few years touring. :))

Not if you possess basic reading comprehension. I'm responding to a dig in which Kohli was used not taking a dig at him.

Try harder next time.

WILLIAMSON NAMED NEW ZEALAND CRICKETER OF THE YEAR

Kane Williamson’s stellar year on the international cricket stage was recognised at the 2016 ANZ New Zealand Cricket Awards function tonight when he was awarded the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal and named the New Zealand Cricketer of the Year.

Williamson, last week named the New Zealand Sportsman of the Year at the 2016 Halberg Awards, was also named the ANZ Test International Player of the Year, and won the Redpath Cup for first-class batting.

The latest swag of awards came on the back of an outstanding year for the 25-year-old Williamson, who – following the retirement of Brendon McCullum, will next month captain the BLACKCAPS at the ICC World Twenty20 in India.

Williamson scored five Test centuries in the period judged; set a New Zealand record for the number of Test runs scored in a calendar year, and just before Christmas rose to become the ICC’s No.1 ranked Test batsman.

NZC annual celebration of cricket – staged at the ANZ Viaducts Events Centre, in Auckland, saw Brendon McCullum formally farewelled by NZC and also presented with his ICC Spirit of Cricket Award, and the WHITE FERNS’ Sophie Devine recognised for her word record fastest T20 century, scored against India.

Martin Guptill was named both the ANZ ODI and T20 Player of the Year, and Trent Boult won the Winsor Cup for first-class bowling.

He has good chance to earn his place as best batsman in the history of NZ. Statistically he is already head of Martin Crowe , Glenn Turner and Ross Taylor.

The 2 test SA tour will be a big challenge for him especially with Steyn, Rabadda and Morkel combo.

Haven't seen Williamson struggle this bad for a while. Couldn't manoeuvre the ball for singles like he normally does so easily.

Pressure of scoring quickly on a wicket that was tricky against good bowling.

Ties Martin Crowe for most Test hundreds by a New Zealander-17.

What a player!

Special player.
Probably the most underrated player in world cricket.

Give him 3 v.good (not great just v.good) batsmen and see the magic.

Very good batsmen. Not as good Kohli, Smith, and Root but still a very good batsmen.

Should reach 30 test match centuries and finish as a atg in tests.

Kane Williamson at #3

Interesting stat on Williamson - He has 15 hundreds at #3, and the team's score he has come in at in these 15 has been:

1) 4/1
2) 57/1
3) 19/1
4) 9/1
5) 1/1
6) 51/1
7) 75/1
8 ) 148/1 (Eng)
9) 56/1
10) 6/1
11) 4/1
12) 169/1 (Zim)
13) 32/1
14) 15/1
15) 83/1

He has the weakest team out of the fabulous four (Root, Smith, Kohli) and very rarely does he come in with the openers having done their job, and only twice has he come in with his side firmly on top.

Think Smith is the clear number 1 batter in the world, and Williamson the clear number 2.
Think they both will get over 40 Test hundreds, perhaps challenge Sachins 50 hundreds, though I think Kane with his technique will get better as he ages, but Smith will probably suffer as he is a hand eye technique (like Ponting he will be out LBW a lot)

Kane is a brilliant cricket. An absolute gem. He will be a God in his own conditions and will be great overseas throughout his career. He won't have long patches of bad form. I really want to rate him above Smith but Smith is just beyond comprehension level good at the moment. Godly form everywhere. An average of 52 is amazing and Smith averages 62 over so many matches.

Kane is probably stronger in terms of tempremeant, but I think Root has the gears and ability to dominate a game which Williamson doesn't.

Root will finish as the better batsmen IMO.

That's possible.

Currently Kane is ahead for me though.

You can make that arguement for ODI's, but definitely not Tests.

Kane has scored 100's at a SR of 70 against some quality attacks. Also some 50's where he has struck it close to 100.

True, he is easily the no.2 best in the world; although Smith does enjoy more support then Williamson so you can make a case for him as the best in the world

Lots of people underrate Williamson, he had a not so good 2016 but I remember in 2014 he was one of, if not the highest scorer of the whole year in test cricket and I think he had a good 2015 too, with a 100 in England, and one in Australia where he scored 1/3 of his teams runs. I don't remember much more but he is class.

Williamson has a mediocre record in England, India and South Africa. He has a lot to do to catch up to Kohli and Smith.

It was his poor performance in India and SA last year which has resulted in him falling away from the other 3.

Tbh, a lot of it had to do with form, burden of captaincy and carrying the team.

Compare the innings he played against SA last game to anything after the 2015 Aus series, he looked like he was back to his best.

Don't think he offered a chance in his 170.

Root was good at a good strike rate vs India as well.

Williamson's record is poor in India, England and SA. That has to do with two things:

First, he played some initial series to these countries during his young days and his record was worsened due to that.

Secondly, he got some tough conditions and tough attacks in his recent tours to these countries.

For example, what Root got in India was much easier conditions than Williamson and latter was also unlucky to miss out playing on 2nd test where he could have done well as conditions were more seamer friendly. Kane faced Steyn/Rabada/Philander in SA while Root faced Morkel, Rabada and Morris. So, Kane had it tougher in those conditions than Root.

Kohli hasn't done much either barring the away Aus series and home Eng series both being easier conditions to score on.He did well in two test series in NZ/SA but hasn't done much on some tough home pitches this season.

Smith is well ahead of three as far as tests is concerned.

Kane Williamson wins Sir Richard Hadlee Medal at ANZ NZC Awards

Williamson wins Sir Richard Hadlee Medal at ANZ NZC Awards

BLACKCAPS captain Kane Williamson was recognised at the 2017 ANZ New Zealand Cricket Awards function when he was awarded the Sir Richard Hadlee Medal for the second year in a row.

Williamson won the Redpath Cup for first-class batting and was named the ANZ Twenty20 Player of the Year, while his impressive performances across all three formats were contributing factors in receiving the top honour.

Named in the 2016 ICC Test team of the year, this season saw Williamson take over the captaincy in all three formats and lead the BLACKCAPS to one of their most successful home summers. The 26-year-old maintained his excellence with the bat to average 59.94 in Test cricket, including four centuries and a high score of 176, while also averaging more than 50 in Twenty20 (52.66).

Amy Satterthwaite’s historic season saw her recognised as the recipient of the Women's ODI Player of the Year award. Satterthwaite finished the judging period with a staggering 935 runs at an average of 103.88, and a strike-rate of 95.89. Her four consecutive ODI centuries, scored against Pakistan and Australia, equalled the world record set by Sri Lankan great Kumar Sangakkara.

Neil Wagner was another winner of the night, claiming the award for ANZ Test Player of the Year. Wagner's remarkable season saw him pick up 56 wickets from 13 Tests, the second highest aggregate in New Zealand history after Sir Richard Hadlee's 1985 season (64). Wagner also became the second fastest BLACKCAP to 100 Test wickets (26 matches), second once again to Sir Richard Hadlee (25 matches).

WHITE FERNS captain Suzie Bates, who was named the 2016 ICC Twenty20 and ODI Player of the Year, won the Women's Twenty20 Player of the Year award for the second year in a row after leading her side to a rare series victory in Australia.

Opener Martin Guptill was named the ANZ ODI Player of the Year for the second year running, with an aggregate of 570 runs at an average of 47.50. A brilliant 114 in Sydney against Australia and match-winning 180 not out against South Africa in Hamilton highlighted Guptill's season.

Taranaki Cricket Association life member Neil Sulzberger received the prestigious Bert Sutcliffe Medal Award for Outstanding Services to Cricket. Having served as both a director and chairman of the Taranaki Cricket Association, Sulzberger's influence in the Central Districts region has been felt across junior development, district administration, finance, sponsorship and officiating, with his service spanning over 50 years.

Especially Kohli in England, a lot of work to do for Kane

The only place wherein Kohli is miles ahead is South Africa.

Williamson leads Kohli in England.

In India, Kohli is a different beast

Williamson versed swinging bananas in England, blazing Steyn in SA and black magic of Ashwin and Jadeja in India.
It was the hardest conditions possible in Test cricket today.

Conditions were very hard but he didn't do much either in India and SA in his recent tours either.
