Kapil Dev, India's World Cup-winning captain, believed a mix of youth and experience in a well-balanced squad would work in India's favour at the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup 2019.

Dev, who led India to their first title in the 1983 event, backed the team to reach the knockouts in this edition, going in as one of the strongest sides.

"India has a great combination of youth and experience. In a way they are more experienced than the other teams," he said at a promotional event on Wednesday, 9 May. "They have the right balance – four fast bowlers, three spinners and they have Virat Kohli and [MS] Dhoni.

"Dhoni and Kohli have done extremely well for India. Both of them are unmatchable."

Dev, who finished his career with 253 wickets in 225 one-day internationals to be arguably India's greatest fast-bowling all-rounder, was all praise for the team's pace attack. "The four fast bowlers we have are fantastic," he said. "The English conditions will help them swing the ball. Then players like [Mohammed] Shami and [Jasprit] Bumrah can bowl 145kph, have swing and pace."

The pacers will be backed by Hardik Pandya, the all-rounder. Since his debut, Pandya has prompted high expectations among fans that he could be a cricketer in the Kapil Dev vein. However, the veteran dismissed comparisons.

"You should not put pressure on Hardik Pandya," he said. "He has enough talent, let him play his natural game. I don't like anybody being compared to anyone because that puts pressure on that player."

Naming India as one of the favourites, along with Australia and England, with New Zealand and West Indies as the dark horses, he added, "I think India will definitely finish in the top four. After that it will be really difficult. After the semifinals, stroke of luck alongside personal and team performance will determine who goes forward."

Really not much to disagree here, India as well balanced a side as any other and with great match winners

theyll get to the final quite easily inmho..then you never know..their spinners will cause massive problems..I expect us to get hammered pretty badly when we play them and they should beat NZ, Bang,Win,Lanka,SA..hence will cruise into semis..

Kohli with the bat and MSD in the field will be key for India at the WC.

Kohli - Yes
Dhoni - :)))

What has MSD done in the last WC? 4 years later at age 40, he is supposed to win us the Cup?

India are the firm favorites to win the world cup with england being distant second.

MSD won his team a WC by playing a crucial knock in the all big final! Kohli gifted his wicket twice to Md. Amir and bottled the chased in the CT 17 Final! :))) That's Kohli's achievement so far in 50 overs ICC tournaments! :)))

Dev is correct that you shouldn’t put pressure on Pandya with comparisons. There is no point of making these comparisons- mostly the media make these ridiculous comparisons.

Kapil Dev is an ex cricketer and has actually experienced what winning world cup is all about. He is right about Dhoni because we are just keyboard warriors and none of us have played any professional cricket. Am I right? Mp812 RamLakhan :inti

Unpopular opinion: Pandya will have a better WC than Dhoni and surprise a few people with a string of decent performances.

Gambhir was the unsung hero, but everyone remembers MSD's knock as he hit the winning shot with a six. Anyway, it was 8 yrs ago. What has MSD done lately. I mean in the last 5 years. He plays well once every 10 matches and in the rest, he leaves everything to other tailenders.

Talking about today, MSD will not be much of a factor. Kohli is the only real match winner in the team. DHawan, Rohit and Pandya are you next best options.

Former Indian captain Kapil Dev believes Virat Kohli’s Indian team has the quality to make it to the semi-finals of the World Cup. The legendary all-rounder said that Kohli’s team will definitely make it to the top four, following which it was difficult to make a prediction.

“The team has a great combination of youth and experience. In my opinion, they have the right balance and of course, there is Dhoni and Kohli. India will definitely be in the top 4. But that is where it gets tricky. They have a good team but belief and performance will be key,” Kapil said on the sidelines of an event in the capital.

Talking about the teams that he thinks will make it to the semi-final, Kapil picked three teams while kept one slot open as he thinks there will be a big fight for the fourth spot.

“The top three teams in the league stage will be India, England and Australia. The fourth one is doubtful as I expect a group of teams to fight for it. Can be between New Zealand, Pakistan and South Africa,” Kapil said.

Kapil also spoke about Hardik Pandya and said that the all-rounder will be very important for the Indian side but believed people should not put extra pressure on him. Kapil sounded very confident about the performance of the pace attack.

“Don’t put pressure on him. He is a young player and he should be allowed to play his natural game. There should be no comparisons at this point. They (pace attack) are fantastic and the English conditions will help them a lot. Bumrah and Shami are bowling brilliantly and they will be a very important part of the team in the World Cup,” Kapil signed off.

Pakistan a reluctant choice for many pundits - only because of the CT17 heroics.
