KFC has announced that it will break with its meat-loving tradition and begin testing a vegetarian alternative to chicken later this year in the United Kingdom.

They're not just winging it: The US fast food chain said the move is in line with its UK commitment to reduce calories per serving by 20% by 2025.

"We always look to respond to the latest changes in lifestyle and dining habits of our customers," said a company spokesperson. "That's why we're looking into vegetarian options."

Colonel Sanders is keeping the details of the vegetarian experiment under wraps.

"The development of the recipe is still in its very early stages and so the options we're exploring in our kitchen are still top secret," a spokesperson said.

The company said a vegetarian menu item could be officially launched as early as next year in the United Kingdom and Ireland. US customers may have to wait longer.

UK health officials have launched a campaign that encourages people to aim for 400 calories for breakfast, 600 for lunch and 600 for dinner, plus balanced choices in between.

In addition to the vegetarian option, KFC has said it will offer low or zero calorie soft drinks and trial a behavioral change program designed to "nudge" consumers toward lighter options.

"We know people are more passionate than ever about eating well," Victoria Robertson, a food innovation executive at KFC, said in a statement.

KFC ran into major trouble in the United Kingdom earlier this year, when a logistics snafu caused a chicken shortage and forced the extended closure of hundreds of restaurants.

The chain, which is owned by Yum Brands (YUM), issued an apology to outraged -- and amused -- customers.

Wow. Finally vegans can go and get something that isn't a side dish .

By simply grilling the chicken instead of deep-frying it, they can reduce the amount of calories by more than 20%.

Deep fried vegetarian items are also rich in calories.

Are there any Halal KFC's in UK?
There used to be here, in the Netherlands, but then KFC changed their chicken supplier.

Takes too long, not cost effective. Just big corporation paying lip service. Even the article isn't taking it seriously as they have playfully put "nudge" in inverted commas.

Most vegetarians and vegans will not be swayed by this because KFC (like McDonalds and Burger King) due to being a massive fast-food chain are perceived as having the very worst kind of record on animal rights.

They have a good veg menu in India ,but still only the people that don't eat meat on certain days will go there.

I remember 3-4 years ago going there and giving company to Mrs with paneer zinger which was pretty good in certain branches.

Dropped a tray of Extra Crispy today.

We still ended up using the chicken though. :uakmal

I'd say about 55-65% of them generally are Halal, it depends on the region and muslim population but in most big city's you will find Halal KFC's.

KFC is in a downward spiral in the US, it’s sad for me to say. KFC in the Middle East is amazing because you still have all the nice menu options, but it’s been 5 years since I’ve had KFC anywhere but the US.

No Zinger, no sandwich options, just the chicken with pathetic portion sizes and weird smell.

It’s sad because as a kid this was one of my favorite places, back when they had two mascots one being that big white bird. It’s US origin but nobody gives a hoot about it here. We have much better options like Raising Canes and Chick Fil-a.

I'd have thought in the US it would be amazing, here in the UK it's generally consistent; solid if not spectacular but the wings are always good and the quality can depend on the branch as well. Best KFC I ever went to was the one in Pindi when I was there as a kid, it was around the time it first opened

Think, that's the reason most customers go due to the deep fried chicken, Nandos would cater for the former.

Ah okay..
I must come soon to UK to eat some....... :))

Yeah surprisingly the best KFC I had was in Pakistan as well, back in Karachi when I was 3-4. It was a traumatizing day though because after I finished the leg piece boti, I went into the payplace with the slides and everything, and got stuck in it :))) They had to send some employee to rescue me. My parents were having a laugh.

The Zinger Burgers and Broast Chicken were the best. The Mrs still swears by them along with the fresh Dahi and chips (french fries) guys.

P.S - I was talking generally and not about KFC in general. Wouldn't dream of eating it whilst in Pakistan.

Current sandwiches are Chicken Little and Crispy Colonel (new).

I was told the Zinger was too spicy and that's why it wasn't selling enough.

With CC Filet it's just a larger version of a chicken tender and it works well with the Nashville Hot, Georgia Gold and Smoke Mountain BBQ sauces.

Another thing is that these sandwiches only come with pickle and mayo. Weird.

Where I live we don't have Halal KFC close. There is one in Brooklyn (90 min), but nearby there are bootleg versions like Kennedy Fried Chicken. Lol.

Yeah I've given up the whole halal mantra. I still abstain from pork, but literally every other race of Muslims eats non zabeeha meat without any qualms like Turks and Arabs. After you've lived in the US for a few years and the nearest halal shops are more than an hour away and only one good halal restaurant in your vicinity you kind of reach your limit, you have literally no where else to eat out.

But yeah the new KFC specials are crap. The Nashville hot chicken was terrible, and yeah wth was with that pickle lol?

That's why I think UK is still the premier place to be if you want to enjoy worldly luxuries and still be honest to your culture and faith.

See you'd think Pakistan would be the last place to eat anything fast food, but it was surprisingly good.

Fast food in Pakistan is the best. Canada and the US aren’t nearly as good when it comes to taste

Plenty.

I went to the one in Birmingham a few weeks ago before Ramadan and it was like eating cardboard. All fast food outlets serve rubbish food. Vegetarian or not it wont be any good for you.

Don’t lie... :mv

Been ages since I had a KFC, just usually settle for Dixy's, don't know if it's as good, but seems fine to me. Can't imagine a vegetarian option tasting that good, usually they have a rubbery taste. Not bad, but not worth the bother either.

Pepes > KFC

Their wings are top drawer and the Pepe's feta salad with chicken is as pukka a salad as you will find on the high street.

Pepes is nice but that's grilled food :)) when it comes to fried chicken KFC is probably the best, the wings especially
