Kerala Discussion Thread

We like middle eastern, thai food etc but we don't name anything malabar for the sake of it. We have our own traditional malabar cuisine for that. And who is baying for blood here?

malabar belongs to everyone. funny malayalis dont have problem with the mallu specialty of entertainment, but a paneer is polluting their name. I know how the streets were full when some actress had recently visited the pure lands of kerala. But giving paneer a malayali name is what offends them.. no wonder this place is going to be the next battleground of intolerance.

Nopes, they just love fancy cooked up names, especially the hindus and Christians. Muslims do it too , but past decade has seen them return to more "Arabic" sounding names.

Different Kind of mallu naming conventions :
 1. The parents try to ensure that all the kids have either the 1st or the 2nd half of the names identical. Back when everyone had 10-12 children this would've helped them remember the kids easily, but I see no reason why people do it now . So you have : Bineesh-Saneesh-Sajeesh, Biji-Riji-Siji, Liju-Biju-Siju, Bibin-Cibin, Shyma-Shyja, Anagh-Anagha etc etc
 2. Some parents will attempt to add one or both of the spouses names to form the Kids name - Beena's children will be named Beenu/Seena, Rajan's children will be Raji, Rajeev , Bose's daughter will be Bosmi, Jose's daughter will be Josmi/Josnie etc
 3. Random inanimate objects - Sony, Mony (pronounced Money) , Daisy, Honey, Happy, Sun, Tini
 4. Random cooked up names which actually mean nothing, but are usually 2 syllable - Tinu, Mini, Simi, Lini, Siby, Mittu, Tity (I kid you not !)
 5. "Viraat" Hindus these days (mainly upper castes and rich OBCs ) love to give their kids highly aryanised/sanskritised names - Dushyanth, Aarav, Deekshit , Aayush etc etc , a far cry from typical mallu hindu names like - Vishnu, Shivan, Krishnan, Raman, Prakashan
 6. A lot of Mallu muslims, upto our millenial generations were named with silly first names preceding the proper muslim names . I bet kaayal would have one too :D - Like Sana, Niya, Sija, Aby, Neethu , Amal , Febina/Febi etc
 7. Syrian/Catholic Christians have a peculiar habit , the 1st son will be named after the maternal grandfather always ! - So if your daddy was Cherian and your name was Joseph CHerian, your son will be Cherian Joseph, and his son will be Joseph cherian and so on. :)))
Not all Catholic Christians do that. It depends on the region. I know few folks from Ankamali who does that. But in my place, nobody follows it. But we do have two-syllable meaning-less names though.:ds

Kerala Gold Smuggling Case: CM Vijayan Writes To PM Modi As Oppn Demands His Resignation

A political row has broken out in India after gold was found being smuggled into the country in diplomatic baggage.

Customs officials at the international airport in the southern state of Kerala found more than 30kg (66lb) of gold hidden inside bathroom fittings.

The package was addressed to the United Arab Emirates' consulate in Thiruvananthapuram.

The UAE has denied any knowledge of the package and said a former local employee had been arrested.

Local reports suggest another person has also been detained.

In a statement on Twitter on Tuesday, the UAE's embassy in the Indian capital Delhi said an investigation had been launched after the discovery was made.

"The [Emirati] authorities have stressed that the culprits who not only committed a major crime but also sought to tarnish the reputation of the UAE mission in India will not be spared," the embassy said.

"We remain committed to cooperating with Indian authorities in getting to the root of the crime."

The UAE's ambassador to India told the Gulf News newspaper that the former worker at the consulate had been dismissed several months ago "because he was not doing his job".

The chief minister of Kerala has faced calls from the opposition to resign over the case, although he has denied any involvement. A senior official in the state has been removed from his post, however.

According to a report by Reuters news agency, the lack of international flights because of the coronavirus pandemic has led to a fall in the amount of gold smuggling to India, as well as a rise in the price of gold.

Somasundaram P.R., head of the World Gold Council's Indian operations told Reuters: "Smuggling can be expected to go down substantially in the current scenario. Smuggling logistics were also severely affected during lockdown.

He expects smuggled volumes this year to be significantly below the 115 - 120 tonnes of gold that was smuggled into India in 2019.

For the second time this year, Kerala’s Information Technology department – more accustomed to plaudits for innovation and efficiency – has become the focal point of a controversy that has caused deep embarrassment to the Chief Minister’s office. The din over the Sprinklr data privacy issue had only just died down when IT secretary M. Sivasankar was linked by opposition parties to one of the accused in a high-profile gold smuggling case.

In the space of two hours on Tuesday, Sivasankar was removed from both that post and the role of principal secretary to chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan. As they did during the top IAS officer’s ‘buck stops with me’ defense in the Sprinklr row, the opposition contends that Sivasankar was a convenient ‘fall guy’ to deflect blame from Vijayan. The most serious charges lobbied at the CMO are allegations of active involvement in the smuggling of 30 kg of gold (said to be valued at Rs 13.5 crore) seized from a diplomatic bag at Trivandrum's international airport on Sunday.

After issuing calls for an independent probe into the case, both Leader of the opposition Ramesh Chennithala and BJP state president K. Surendran have called on Vijayan to resign. The rhetoric and local news media coverage have also tended toward the scandalous by drawing parallels to the ‘Solar scam’ that plagued former Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, who has also weighed in with a comparison. In both instances, the list of suspects has featured a prominent woman who allegedly used her clout with the CMO and other top government officials to circumvent rules.

Noting that the case has “more than one angle” and had “serious implications as it undermines the national economy”, Vijayan in a letter to PM Narendra Modi on Wednesday asked for a “thorough, effective and coordinated investigation into the incident by central agencies” that should “cover all aspects from the source (of the gold) to the end utilisation” and “unravel every link of the crime”.

The police are on the hunt for Sapna Suresh, formerly an executive secretary at the city’s UAE Consulate General who had since been contracted to work in the Space Park project under the Kerala State Information Technology Infrastructure Limited (KSITIL). Suresh and Sarith Kumar, a former PRO at the embassy who was arrested and questioned on Sunday, are alleged to have run the smuggling racket by utilising their knowledge of diplomatic credentials and the robust protection that applies to diplomatic caches under the Vienna Convention. While it has been reported that the bag was addressed to an official at the UAE mission, the consulate has issued a statement said that neither it nor its diplomats were involved in any smuggling activity and has offered to co-operate with and assist the investigation. A parallel inquiry is reportedly being conducted in the UAE.

“It will be interesting to find who the other players, especially the ringleaders. The Trivandrum airport has always been a favourite for smugglers operating out of the Gulf corridor due to its many blind spots, especially in the CCTV coverage net, and the frequency of flights from GCC countries. Gold biscuit hauls are commonplace, but what sets this case apart is the use of the diplomatic channels. From my experience, this speaks to the role of a well-connected insider, both in the UAE and in Kerala,” said a retired customs official who has been posted at airports across the state.

In the wake of the haul, the opposition contended that Sivasankar was involved owing to his reported links to Suresh as also irregularities in her hiring, which supposedly overlooked or ignored a number of red flags. Besides raising other salacious charges, opposition leaders accused Sivasankar using his clout to ‘shield’ Suresh. Until his dismissal on Tuesday, they levelled much the same allegations against Vijayan for ‘protecting’ his top aide.

“That he continued in the IT secretary post as long as he did is because the Chief Minister had to think of his own interest. When the solar scam made headlines, former CM Oommen Chandy had also said he had no links to Saritha (the woman whose solar energy company was at the centre of that incident) Pinarayi Vijayan is also claiming not to know Sapna although there is plenty of photo and video evidence of them at programmes and functions, including the Loka Kerala Sabha (a high-profile non-resident Keralite meet). The truth will come out soon,” Surendran said.

Thiruvananthapuram: The case involving the smuggling of 30 kg gold in Kerala will be taken over by the National Investigation Agency, the Union Home Ministry declared today, saying the "organised smuggling operation may have serious implications for national security". Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan wrote to Prime Minister Narendra Modi yesterday, seeking a thorough investigation and promising all possible support.

The nod from the home ministry came amid a political firestorm in the state over the case, in which the opposition in the state - the Congress and the BJP -- have alleged the involvement of the Left Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's office.

The gold, concealed in a diplomatic package linked to the United Arab Emirates consulate in the state, was detected by the Customs Department at the Thiruvananthapuram airport last week.

The UAE said it is investigating the case and "the culprits who sought to tarnish the reputation of the UAE mission in India will not be spared".

A former employee at the UAE Consulate, Swapna Suresh, who was also a marketing officer working on contract for one of the firms linked to the Kerala government's Information Technology department, is among those who staked claim to the baggage, said customs sources.

Chief Minister Vijayan has denied that anyone from his office made to attempts to shield any suspect in the case.

"This controversial woman in gold smuggling case has no connection with the Chief Minister's Office or IT department. How can this new gold smuggling case anyway related to state government? The parcel did not come to any of the state government agency. The parcel came for UAE consulate. If there is any failure how can state government be responsible? The state government has no role in it," Mr Vijayan had said.

Sources at the Chief Minister's Office told NDTV that the "contract of the concerned person has been terminated since the serious allegations emerged".

In his letter seeking the Prime Minister's intervention, Mr Vijayan wrote, "The case has serious implications as this undermines the economy of the Nation. In fact, it has more than one angle warranting a thorough investigation".

The woman, who has been designated as a "person of interest" by the customs department, has applied for anticipatory bail, denying any wrongdoing.

Thiruvananthapuram: Swapna Suresh, designated as a "person of interest" by customs authorities in the Kerala gold smuggling case that has pulled Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan's office into a political firestorm, has applied for anticipatory bail. Claiming innocence, she said she did not have anything to do with the smuggling and was facing a "media trial".

In the petition filed online before the Kerala High Court, Swapna Suresh said that she had no involvement in the racket uncovered with the seizure of around 30 kg gold worth about Rs 15 core, by the customs department at the Thiruvananthapuram airport on July 4.

The gold was found in diplomatic baggage linked to the United Arab Emirates consulate in the state.

Swapna Suresh in her anticipatory bail application to the court said that she checked on the cargo with customs on instructions from the Acting Consulate General at the UAE mission in Kerala.

A former employee at the UAE mission and a marketing officer for a firm linked to the Kerala government's Information Technology department, she said she was associated with the consulate on a "work for request basis".

Sources in the customs department said, "We have been expecting her to come and explain herself since 5th of July. She hasn't come till now. Since she has the legal duty to explain being one of the people who showed interest in the package."

The Kerala Chief Minister's office was accused by the opposition of links to Swapna Suresh and a senior bureaucrat was removed from the post of principal secretary to Mr Vijayan on Tuesday. The opposition Congress has demanded the Chief Minister's resignation and announced state-wide protests.

The Chief Minister has refuted allegations of his office shielding anyone saying, "Elections are nearing, government cannot be discredited by creating smoke."

Mr Vijayan had on Wednesday sent a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking his "intervention for an effective investigation" into smuggling case.

The UAE Embassy in Delhi earlier had tweeted saying an investigation to find out who sent the cargo has begun, and, that "those responsible had not only committed a major crime but also sought to tarnish the reputation of the UAE mission in India" and they will not be spared.

Sarith Kumar, an accused in the case and a former public relations officer of the UAE consulate at Thiruvananthapuram, was arrested on Monday

My home state, always makes me proud. I wonder if the smuggled Gold from the gulf region was for the distribution of Islamic terrorism across India.. We Keralites I believe (could be wrong) also hold a proud record of providing the highest number of recruits to ISIS from India. Well done Malayalees...

National Investigation Agency files case against 4 in Kerala gold smuggling scandal

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) on Friday filed a First Information Report against four accused in the case of gold smuggling via diplomatic channels. The FIRs were filed under the stringent Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

It is the first time the premier agency, which handles national security, terror and security-based cases, is investigating a gold smuggling case.

In the FIR, Sarith Kumar, who is in the custody of the customs, is first accused; Swapna Suresh is second; elusive UAE-based smuggling kingpin Fazil Pareed is third; and Suresh’s friend Sandeep Nair is the fourth accused.

With NIA invoking the UAPA, Suresh and Sandeep are likely to surrender in a couple of days and the agency may start extradition proceedings to get Pareed.

The NIA said the accused were part of a well-entrenched smuggling racket and the first accused and Suresh were actively involved in arranging the diplomatic papers for the delivery of the consignment.

It also said a good portion of money generated through smuggling was used to fund some anti-national activities.

The Ministry of External Affairs has also made a request to the UAE embassy in Delhi for a meeting with some employees at the consular office in Thiruvananthapuram to get more details.

On Sunday, the Customs Department had seized 30 kg of gold from an air cargo consignment from the United Arab Emirates to the country’s consulate in Thiruvananthapuram.

Suresh, who was working as the operational manager of the Kerala State Information Technology Infrastructure Limited under the state IT Ministry, had gone underground after the seizure. Later, the CM had transferred his principal secretary M Sivasankar, who was reported to be close to Suresh.

The Union Home Ministry had handed over the probe to the NIA on Thursday.

The issue took on political colour after the Opposition Congress and BJP claimed that chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan knew about his principal secretary Sivasankar’s alleged link with the second accused Suresh.

The Maharashtra -based varsity, Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Technological University, from where Suresh reportedly obtained her BCom degree made it clear that the varsity did not have such a course. Later, the controller of the examination Dr Vivek S Sathe sent a mail to a news channel saying it was a fake certificate. She was given a job at Air India-SATS and the Kerala IT department based on this degree. Two days back, her estranged brother also claimed she did not even clear her class 10 examination.

Meanwhile protests by opposition parties seeking the resignation of the chief minister Pinarayi turned violent at several places in the state.

In Kozhikode, many people were injured after police resorted to baton charge on agitating Youth League workers. In Kochi too, Yuva Morcha protests turned violent. In Kannur, police lobbed teargas shells to control Youth Congress workers who held a rally outside Vijayan’s ancestral house.

“It is a big racket. Reports have emerged that they smuggled many such consignments. The CM can’t keep silent saying he was not aware of the appointment of Swapna Suresh. He has to take moral responsibility and resign,” said state opposition leader Ramesh Chennithala.

State health minister KK Shaialaja said at several places protesters ignored social distancing and they were not wearing masks also.

“We are in the midst of the worst pandemic. Hope protesters realise this,” she said.

“Our unwavering commitment to social welfare is reflected in this achievement that will be be a huge boost to our efforts to eradicate extreme poverty,” Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan tweeted.

Kerala is always much maligned in the national media because the right wingers hate the state.

So I thought it was important to highlight the good news of Kerala. Have always been envious of the neighbours on how much progress they have made in terms of social development and development of human capital. It's the most progressive region in the subcontinent when it comes to social development and if they can progress in terms of economic development too, they would be unbeatable.

Kerala Congress Leader Irks Ally Muslim League With Nehru-RSS Remark

Kannur/Kozhikode: Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) chief K Sudhakaran on Monday said India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru was a great leader who had shown his "magnanimity" to include RSS leader Shyama Prasad Mukherjee in his Cabinet, drawing sharp criticism from key Congress partner Muslim League (IUML) and the ruling CPI(M). Mr Sudhakaran made the remarks while addressing a Children's Day programme organised by the Kannur DCC to celebrate the birth anniversary of Nehru, days after his revelation that he had given protection to RSS shakhas decades ago, irking the Muslim League.

"The generous gesture he (Nehru) made to include Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, an RSS leader, in his cabinet; his magnanimity to align with communal fascism...the leader who showed the nation the great values of democracy...We have to learn a lot from Nehru, we have to understand a lot from him, one has to read and learn about him to know about his mind," the KPCC chief said.

Mr Sudhakaran also said Nehru gave the responsibility of making the Constitution to Dr BR Ambedkar, who was not a Congress leader.

Nehru also made Ambedkar the Law Minister in his government. Mukherjee was inducted as a Minister for Industry and Supply by Nehru in the interim government he had formed after independence. Mukherjee quit the government in 1951 and founded Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the political wing of RSS. He was the founder-president of Jana Sangh, considered to be the earlier avatar of the BJP.

While senior IUML leader MK Muneer criticised Mr Sudhakaran for his remarks, accusing him of trying to "provoke many and please the fascists", the ruling CPI(M) and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, in separate statements, slammed the KPCC chief, alleging he was trying to take the Congress in the tent of the Sangh Parivar. "If Sudhakaran has made such remarks, it is certain that he has not read history completely," Mr Muneer told reporters in Kozhikode.

He said Nehru's first election victory was against the fascist forces like Hindu Maha Sabha.

Mr Muneer, who had also served as minister in the previous Congress-led UDF governments, said a meeting of IUML leadership will be held on November 16 and the issues being raised by Mr Sudhakaran may also be discussed.

Irked by Mr remarks, the IUML leader also claimed that Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who is participating in the Bharat Jodo Yatra, has made it clear that those Congressmen who have pro-RSS thinking should leave the party.

Accusing the KPCC chief of trying to "whitewash" the RSS, that too on Children's Day when the country remembers Jawaharlal Nehru, Mr Vijayan sought to know why is he taking such efforts.

Hailing Nehru as a true secular leader, the Marxist veteran said Nehru, in a letter sent to the Chief Ministers on December 7, 1947, had explained the nature of the danger posed by the RSS. In another letter, he had warned against falling for claims that the RSS was not a political organisation, he said.

He alleged that the Congress always had had communalists and RSS supporters like that of Mr Sudhakaran's mindset.

Mr Vijayan claimed that Mukherjee was made a minister, succumbing to pressure exerted by such people in the Congress.

By comparing Shyama Prasad Mukherjee and Dr Ambedkar, Mr Sudhakaran not only distorted history but also insulted Dr Ambdekar, the CM said.

In a statement, the CPI(M) state secretariat urged the Congress's national leadership and the UDF to clarify their stand on Mr Sudhakaran's remarks.

"The other day he had also openly said that he had given protection to the RSS shakhas. Instead of correcting such pro-RSS positions, Sudhakaran again tries to justify his position by portraying even Jawaharlal Nehru as a leader who allied with communal fascist forces", the CPI(M) alleged.

Earlier in the day, Muslim League expressed reservations regarding Mr Sudhakaran's revelation that he had given "protection" to RSS shakhas decades ago.

Mr Muneer said that in view of the differing opinions within the Congress on various issues concerning the Left front, a high-level meeting of UDF should be held to discuss such matters and then come out with a joint stand.

Mr Muneer said his party expects the Congress would have an internal discussion on what Mr Sudhakaran said and the reasons given by him for his actions.

"Therefore, any action to be taken in relation to that (Mr Sudhakaran's statement) is by the Congress," Mr Muneer said.

He also made it clear that there was "no doubt" that "there should be no move to legitimise the RSS by words or actions".

Mr Sudhakaran recently courted controversy by saying that when he was part of the Congress (Organisation) decades ago, he had sent his men to "give protection" to some RSS shakhas in the state.

While speaking at a function in Kannur, he had said that the CPI(M) had tried to destroy the shakhas when it had been launched in places like Edakkad, Thottada, and Kizhunna here, and he had sent people to "protect" it from being destroyed by the Left cadres.

Congress (Organisation) came into being after the 1969 split of the Congress party. The Congress (O) later merged with the Janata Party.

Mr Sudhakaran had also clarified that his actions back then were not because of any affiliation towards right wing outfits, but guided by his belief that all parties, including the RSS, have the right to function in a democratic country.

A Muslim body in Kerala on Friday came out against soccer-crazy youth in the state, who have erected cutouts of star-players in support of their teams participating in the ongoing World Cup by saying worshipping football celebrities is against Islam and urged them to not wave flags of Portugal which had colonised many countries.

Nasar Faizy Koodathayi, general secretary of the Qutba committee under the Samastha Kerala Jam-Iyyathul Ulama, expressed concern over football fans spending so much money on the cutouts of Argentina's Lionel Messi, Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo and Neymar Jr of Brazil.

He lamented that students were losing interest in studies due to the games in Qatar.

"It is not right to wave the flag of Portugal which colonised many countries," the cleric said, adding that it was not right for Indians to respect and wave the flags of other nations.

Nasar Koodathayi said he, however, was not against football.

"The game should be seen in a sportsman's spirit. Football is becoming a fever people are getting addicted to. This is not good," Mr Koodathayi said.

According to him, the sport should be promoted only as a game which encourages physical activity.

"Instead, football has become a fever and fans are engaged in worshipping sport-stars. Today, people are respecting and waving the flags of other nations over their own," he said.

"Instead of loving our nation, some are engaged in worshipping football stars. There is a limit to worshipping people, when it comes to Islam. Also, people are waving Portugal flags...A country which colonised many countries...," he said.

Meanwhile, State Education Minister V Sivankutty and Indian Union Muslim League leader M K Muneer reacted against the statement of Samastha leader and said watching football and becoming fans of football legends were part of one's personal freedom.

Mr Sivankutty said no one has the right to encroach upon another's.

"People becoming fans of football legends and worshipping them are part of their personal freedom. No one has the right to encroach upon that freedom. A person can decide whether he needs to watch the match or not, listen to music or not, read a book or not... it's their choice. Our Constitution has given us all the freedom. No one can ban that," Sivankutty said.

He said if the intention of the organisation was to create awareness, it can. "But, people, too, have the right to decide whether to accept that or not," he said.

Muneer said football is a game enjoyed not only by students but also elders.

"Not only students but also elders watch and follow football with fervour. About what was said by Samsatha, you should ask them," Muneer told reporters when asked about the Muslim body's opinion on football-crazy fans in the State.

Kerala is known for its craze for football.

Fans of Brazil and Argentina religiously follow the football season and celebrate the World Cup.

Police said they have registered many cases against fans fighting over the sport across the State.
