We have ended the tournament in the most spectacular fashion as we could have. We had a remarkable PSL 2023 final. Well done PCB is getting this tournament done without any undue controversies.

In my personal opinion this season of PSL unearthed a lot of new faces in which regards past PSL seasons did not do much with exception of PSL 1 and to a slight extent PSL 2. It was refreshing to see that we have a young lot coming up who should look to take over the reigns of LOI in the next 2-3 years. In fact it was so pleasing to see that we can now put together a T20 team with seasoned campaigners taking time off. Well done again to PCB for Afghanistan series squad selection.

The manner in which this PSL has been concluded PCB should start thinking at long-term results and should manage the workload of the players correctly going forward. In the recent past we saw Shaheen and Fakhar missing out on T20 WC games due to injuries whilst half fit players like Shadab were playing the matches. Had we had a fully fit squad we just might have been able to lift the cup. Nevertheless we need to look forward now.

The first priority of PCB should be to plan for World Cup 2023. In my opinion the following core players are someone PCB should manage their workload and restrain them from playing any meaningless games including T20s or T20 leagues across the world; Babar, Fakhar, Rizwan, Shadab and Shaheen. Ideally speaking these are our core players that we need fully fit for the WC later this year.

This means the bi-lateral games till the time of WC should be used as the playground for young players to showcase their talent and make a name for themselves to be considered for the WC. What PCB has done with Afghanistan series paves the path correctly. I want PCB to take equally bold step and give youngsters the full opportunity in the limited overs series against New Zealand that would follow the Afg series.

Next steps should be to give long-run to players identified through PSL. These players are ideally the investments that should bear fruit hopefully in WC later this year. The players that I want to see given a long rope are; Ihsanullah, Naseem Shah, Azam Khan, Abdullah Shafique and potentially Saim Ayub. All the mentioned players are young players and have it in them for a good Pakistan career.

Lastly and more importantly I hope PCB management selects their team for the world cup based on team's roles and responsibilities rather than individual names. Also we need to consider Indian pitches in terms of team selections, we can see low scoring games at this time of the year which would replicate the pitches in India in Nov time as well given the weather is eerily similar. Therefore we need to have 2 combinations for Indian WC.

It is important to note that on bowling friendly wickets our established batsmen would be very hand and it would be our bowlers that would win the games. However in batting friendly conditions its our batsmen who would ideally win us the game. Therefore its important our squad covers for both possibilities and we can use this PSL as a base to build a strong team for the upcoming WC.

It was a rare tournament where a few local batters caught the eye - Saim Ayub, Mohammad Haris and Haseebullah all showed flare and promise.

Ihsanullah was the find of the tournament for me.

Other batters (Saim, Haris) were well-known quantities from before.
