Saturday he faces Gilbert Burns, his toughest opponent to date.

Khamzat is nothing short of a brutal fighter. His confidence levels have rarely been seen in all of Combat Sports history.

So far he has backed up his wordsbeating all his opponents, in total dominance.

Is he for real , a new superstar or will he be exposed?

As we all know UFC is perennially on the look out for the next super star. The current one that is being highlighted is Khamzat.

Let's get the positives out quickly - this guy is obliterating opponents in two divisions - yes - you read that right - in two divisions. His brutal style attracts a lot of casual fans but as the OP has mentioned - and I agree with him - Gilbert Burns is his toughest opponent to date.

There are some absolute sharks in the Welterweight division - and on top of the mountain is the undisputed KAMARU USMAN - followed by Colby Covington who probably would be the champion but for a guy called Kamaru. There's also Gilbert Burns and Leon Edwards and a few more.

So this will be Khamzat's sternest test yet. Serious fans like me would be really keen to see how he fares against an elite fighter like Burns. If he clears this fight - he probably would have to fight at least one or two more before he can take aim at Kamaru.

But let's say Khamzat has a spectacular knock out this Saturday - Dana White might be seeing huge dollar signs and he may graduate Khamzat directly for a title shot but I suspect that may not happen.

Overall this is going to be a super exciting fight.

Imo The Wolf looks far too big for the Welterweights. Burns used to be lightweight. I dont want to disrespect Gilbert but he could be thrown around like a rag doll on Saturday. Unless Burns pulls out a spectacular KO shot, I cant think of any other way he wins this.

Kamaru will be a challenge if he's fully fit but again the size will come into it.

Izzy is simply not great on the ground. As Khamzat pointed out , if Whittaker could get his back, he will never escape from him.

So there's a couple of things - Khamzat I believe is a natural -given his physique and weight- at Middleweight and not at Welterweight.

Not many fighters cope well with weight cuts and Khamzat I am pretty sure would be torturing his body and mind at Welterweight.

And he is yet to fight a top 10 guy - so while his wins looks very impressive they all have been against lower tier guys. Burns is a legitimate top tier/top 5 fighter and that is where Khamzat's test lies.

Some fighters cut weight better than others, genetics. I think he will be fine.

I would like him to be hit hard, get a negative position on the ground against Burns. As you are aware, being a GOAT MMA is also about how you take it not just how you give it.

Really excited for this fight.

Also his friendship with Darren Till on SmeshBros is very funny and inspiring watching him train. His dedication is second to none!
 
Khamzat looks like the real deal to me, i think i read in his first few fights a punch or kick wasnt even landed on him , Saturday will be his first real test howeveri think he will come through no problems.
 
Looks the real deal BUT we will see what happens if someone, possibly Burns can hang in there for a while. He is so aggressive and burns a ton of energy that you have to have to wonder if his cardio can hold up if a fight can last a few rounds. If he runs through Burns, I think Usman will be a very worried man. Down the line, looking forward to him fighting Shavkat Rakhmonov who looks very good too.

I think Usman is already worried. He seems to prefer a boxing fight against Canelo which could be even more dangerous. lol.

How good is the guy in the OP title, I haven’t watched him but will do as he closes in on a title shot I believe. And everyone is looking for that Boxing money, Dana is such a hustler lol look at what he pays these guys its crazy, Jake Paul is a nutcase but he isn’t wrong about things like fighter pay. Ngannu could face Fury in the future to
 
What a first round. Khamzat gets Burns down but not for too long. Wow, Khamzat catches Burns with a clean jab that rattles Burns and he falls to the ground.

Overall I'd give Khamzat the first round.
 
What a fight so far. Already Khamzat's toughest fight.

He is finding out fighting a top 5 guy is a completely different deal to the lower tier fighters. What a great round.
 
What a recovery by Burns - he clearly wins the 2nd round for me. Khamzat got a bit stunned in that round.
 
Oh my goodness. This has to be one of the fight of the year fights. Khamzat and Burns what a fight.

But Khamzat is a long way away from challenging Usman or even Colby at this point. It's a great learning experience though. A very very close fight.
 
A very close but unanimous decision win for Khamzat. I have no issues with it at all. Khamzat has proven that he belongs to the big league. His tougher fights wait for him ahead though.

Burns what a fighter. Had he been Chimaev's size things would have been different.

Both fighters have enhanced their reputations tonight.

Overall a "paisa vasool" fight.
 
Okay, things get interesting Dana White said if Khamzat wins he could be facing Colby. I cannot wait for that fight.

Looks a beast . 5th fight in UFC he beats a tough tough 2nd ranked experienced skilful in all departments Burns .

What a brutal fight this was. Mostly stand , huge strikes by both men , the durability of these two on another level.

Must watch . what did you make of the stand up ?! Crazy humans

I think Khamzat was fasting . He looked drained in the body compared to previous fights . But the experience will be huge going forward.

Colby got no chance , Burns Is superior

Hmm he definitely has cardio and pacing issues.
 
Khamzat has the Luke Rockhold disease of sticking his chin straight up and his striking defence is below par. Still a lot to work with but he really needs to learn to set-up takedowns like Islam does using trips and sweeps. Beasting people down drains the gas tank. If he utilises his reach he is still more than a handful for everyone. It was only when he started jabbing and landing those straights that Gilbert was in trouble.

I think Dana is lining him up against Colby next which will be very interesting indeed. Khamzat will have to pace himself, use better fight IQ and try to get him out of there nice and early or Colby could easily outwork him in a 5 round-fight. Having said that, Colby will probably still try and duck Khamzat.

I would love to see Khamzat take on Luque who is down to throw with anyone (not named Burns), both these dudes would take the fight as a clear number one contender fight for the winner of Usman-Edwards. Luque is a savage.

But what a Chin he has ! Hit multiple times with huge shots but ate them really well. No knockdown scored against him in the fight & no take down.

It was huge pressure going against the genuine no 2 , a great fighter in only his 5th ufc fight . I think the occasion got to him , wanted the knockout . Overall was never in any real danger of losing imo . Great performance by both men.

Khamzat mentioned he was reluctant to take it to the ground because Burns is an expert ground man , possibly could get him into an armbar . Smart move . I don’t think colby could submit him & colby will struggle to get a takedown . Easier fight for Khamzat imo .

Imagine in 12 months what Khamzat will be . Scary

Yep, the fact that he managed to win nevertheless is a true proof of Khamzat being a total bad-***. Because he still has many shortcomings, most of which come down to lack of experience: But he can work on all of these. What he showed is heart and chin. I suppose these are the 2 attributes you can't really teach and Khamzat got them.

There's no way Colby is submitting him, I don't think he ever has to any of his opponents but he does have cardio for days and is dangerous in the later rounds if you can't finish him.

I agree his performance was effected by anxiety. Big crowd, hype, people's main event, big jump in competition and he still got the W.
 
Looks to be the next big thing, needs to work on head movement it was nonexsistent in this fight, and cardio, he looked gas in 2nd round and caught a 2nd wind in the 3rd.

Other then that, i didnt see khamzat winning easily, it was always gonna be a tough fight, burns is no joke.

Haven’t watched much of UFC these days but I caught some of the highlights and was looking at his stand up, it is obviously a little different to Boxing when it comes to range/defence but there is potential there for him build on, his right hand is pretty heavy and he is effective when trying to get his jab going. However, I saw him overreaching twice and he was made to pay, first instance he is a little too square and in front of the Brazilian guy, goes for a straight left and is caught with a massive counter left hook, even though he was in a bad position, if he kept his right hand up he may avoided that. Then again, too close in range, right hand is hanging too low and he throws a clumsy jab (in a weird position where he throws it from below his chin rather then down a straight line) and is countered with a big right hand over the top. It may be partly fatigue to especially late in a fight because early on in the fight his 1-2 was a lot sharper and he commanded distance better to, fighters can get overzealous sometimes and it appeared as though he went head hunting at times. Also could do with improving his footwork and if that’s difficult head movement. Having said all that, it was a great fight to watch and gutsy performance from both

It’s a good fight for him to learn from, muslims should never fight in Ramadan and especially fasting during camp
 
I was surprised how little boxing skill he has. Previously he has just blown everyone away by overwhelming them, but in this fight he was made to miss a lot, and while Burns is an excellent fighter, he shouldn't be outboxing Khamzat. Fair play to the Chechen though, he showed a tremendous chin to take those shots and come back swinging every time.

Not sure how he'll fair against Covington unless this was a below par showing due to fasting. This is obviously a big step up in class.
 
After watching the fight live and then re-watching it again - I have to say this. I don't know much about Ramadan and if he actually fasts etc., but he looked gassed out by the 3rd round. The one thing we know about Colby or Kamaru - is that they have gas tanks for ages. In all their fights even after the 5th round - they looked ready to go for another 5 rounds.

I still absolutely think he actually belongs in the 185 lbs and not 170 lbs. He's not going to be a champion in this division.


Now every fighter evolves and learns - so Khamzat will learn from this experience but if a fight were to happen between Colby and Khamzat - I will put my money on Colby.

And I am not even talking about Kamaru - that guy is a beast who TKO'd Burns in the 3rd round despite some minor hiccups.

Overall I will give Khamzat credit for actually living up to his hype and prevailing over Burns in a close bout for the ages.

Quick look at his resume and he had never been past round 2 in his career thus far, that may not have been just physically exhausting but also mentally draining. He needs more rounds under his belt, best way to further his conditioning and build some mental confidence when it comes to his engine.

No doubt he has a lot to learn. Only 5/6 years ago he was a doorman, worked normal jobs. His rise to a title fight within 6 years in the UFC is like nothing seen before. For sure he needs a proper striking coach, his head movement was non-existant at times.

Yes Ramadan is not time to fight but its probably because he didnt want to refuse a fight, as Dana is pretty ruthless.

Didnt Amir Khan lose to Prescott in Ramadan or was it another fight of his?

Round 2 - Gilbert Burns 10-9
Round 3 - Khamzat 10-9 .

One of the rare occasions my scorecard perfectly agreed with the judges. In fact that is how I scored live in my original commentary on this very same thread.

For Khamzat for a guy who's so far used to blitzing opponents - the first time he got pushed -especially after losing the 2nd round - it is very creditable how he bounced back. The guy is a legitimate contender if he can fix his gas tank and striking in my opinion.

That is amazing but his team need to make sure that rise isn’t a curse, too often such fighters will get thrown in at the deep end too soon, I guess it’s a lot harder in the UFC with their stacked division but I would put my promoters hat on and take some time with this fella and build him up steadily. Totally agree there, I think there have been some MMA fighters who even work with pro boxing trainers, if he fights out the US there are plenty of options

You know what that rings a bell lol I remember coming home from Taraweh prayers and checking on my phone that he lost. I just think Amir was starting to outgrow the division a bit maybe due to the nature of his training camps and was foolish to abandon Oliver Harrison at the time, Frank Warren made a big mistake trusting Rubio as well, they could have found someone less risky and still sold it on PPV. Looking back if Khan had a sensible team behind him he could have been champion at 135, if I recall then he was rated in the top 10 in the world so early in his career prior to that defeat. I do feel he may have been fasting during that camp because since then, Amir has always taken Ramadan off

His opponent was more experienced and had been the distance quiet a few times so was crafty enough to push him to the end, Khamzat could easily have folded in the final round but he has a great chin and fighting spirit, qualities you can’t teach but he can certainly improve in the areas you mentioned

I sometimes train while fasting, light weights, slow jog at most. Footballers play after fasting, Benzima scored a hat trick, he played the match 13 mins after breaking his fast. He scored again tonight in extra time. But Boxing and MMA is a different beast. As you know when you are hit hard on the head it can have a serious impact on your balance, legs, oxegyn to the brain. I think those big shots Khamzat took made him some what delirious. Imo its very dangerous esp after cutting weight the day before and not being able to re-hydrate properly. Its a fascinating discussion, so much science involved. But also imo those who fast reguarly often to gain a stronger mental gain, as long as they dont fight in Ramadan.

I only want to comment on the Dana White issue. From the people who I speak to in the UFC business - Dana is zeroing on Khamzat as his next big cash cow/superstar of UFC. I am pretty sure if Khamzat wanted to not fight during Ramadan - Dana would have certainly agreed to that. In the grand scheme of things the fight would have been moved maybe a few weeks/months later. As I mentioned Khamzat currently is in Dana's good books.

The only reason I can think of is Khamzat himself did not want to wait too long after his previous fight which perhaps was back in October 2021 if I am not wrong.

Yep, he seems to be the next megastar in the UFC. Jon Jones is still around but not the same fighter as before. Connor is pretty much done but might have few more big money fights but wont win the title.

Bro - Colby is one of the best wrestlers in the division. Usman who is an accomplished wrestler himself - fought Colby for 10 rounds in 2 separate title fights and not one time did he attempt to take him down - such is Colby's prowess in wrestling.

The reason Usman beat Colby was simply in striking - they both basically nullified each other's strength in wrestling - so it all came down to the stand up game which is kinda weird because each of them respected the other's wrestling game - Colby officially may have gotten one takedown of Usman which is still debated.

Colby's strength is relentless pressure, pouring insane volume of jabs (I believe he holds the record in UFC for over 500 strikes in one fight against Robbie Lawler) - constantly pushing you to the cage- level change and get a takedown and basically grind you for 5 rounds. And he has insane gas tank.

I just want to clarify - at the current moment - with things remaining the same - which is Khamzat's supposedly weak gas tank and his wrestling being nullified - I don't see how he can win unless he has a puncher's chance. But that again is debatable because Colby has never been knocked out in his entire UFC career.

The big upside for Khamzat is - the guy just fought Burns - a top tier fighter - and actually beat him. No reason why he cannot improve.

I was merely suggesting if that day Khamzat would have faced Colby instead of Burns - he probably would have lost - especially considering as you pointed out he may have been more fatigued than usual given the Ramadan fasting - which plays straight into Colby's strength with his top class conditioning and enduring gas tank.

Happily for fight fans like us - if this fight were to happen in the future - Dana will ensure this will be the main fight in the card even though it's not for the title - that I can guarantee.

I just think Colby's wrestling will be nullifed by Khamzat. Burns was not close to a take down, so I cant see how Colby will take him down. Then we have striking, Khamzat superiour. The only method of victory I can see for Colby is points but only if the fight is 5 rounds. Colby has the cardio, has the experience and if Khamzat becomes gassed, he could outpoint him.

Would be a great fight. Also imagine the build up for this, it wont be clean. Dana must ensure they social distance until they reach the Octogan. I think the build up could rattle Khamzat esp if Colby mouths off about his mother etc. But I think Khamzat seems the type of person who will then be so motivated, to seriously hurt Colby but not stupid enough to do what he did against Burns, swing wildly going for the KO.

Masvidal recently knocked out Colby's tooth at some restaurant for all his talk about how Masvidal is a bad parent etc., I actually think Colby is probably a little rattled/scared.

Unlike Masvidal who is a legitimate street fighter and badass - Colby is simply a fighter who wants to sell his fights.

It is actually a sad indictment of the UFC cut throat culture -that a fighter like Colby was about to be cut from UFC because supposedly he has a "boring" fighting style. Damn the casual fans.

Anyway for his next fight with his career on the line - Colby went to Brazil beat Damien Maia and called Brazil "A Dump". Overnight a star was born and he simply never shook off that persona.

There are youtube videos of how his interviews were before and after that fight. Colby was basically a very well behaved, nice guy which translates to boring in the UFC parlance.

Anyway I don't know if Colby wants to risk saying stupid things to Khamzat. Colby might get physically assaulted again - Masvidal was foolish enough to do it himself (he sucked punched Colby) -and got charges pressed against him. Khamzat isn't a LW like Poirier or a broken WW so chances of Colby taking the fight are pretty slim. I don't think Dana will follow through on offering either the fight, Khamzat is a huge draw and a cash cow and if he loses the hype will fade quickly. Also, it would mean Colby getting another title shot and a 3rd fight against Usman which no one wants to see. I think Dana wants Colby "smeshed" and should strong-arm or give him a payday worthy of fighting Burns or Edwards should he lose to Usman.
 
Hamza is gonna be the two divisions champ.
He has everything to be successful in two divisions.
Israel adesanya is an easy matchup for Hamza than kamaru Usman.
After that war against burns he has probably learnt his lesson and will listen to his coaches more and he will fight smart.
Colby Covington is way too easier matchup for him than Gilbert burns who has legit threat on ground. Colby Covington has pillow hands he can't knock Hamza out and he certainly can't hold him on ground.
Hamza has 100 percent takedown defence.Colby is way too easier fight. Hamza will take him down and rearrange his face with ground and pound.
Hamza will chain wrestle that Colby fool just like habib did with his opponents.
I hope this fight happens soon.

Seems as you were correct. Looks like Colby has refused the fight.

Not official but leaked card is showing Khamzat v Nate Diaz. Which for Khamzat is great in the short term, good money fight and also when he feeds on Nate who is as tough as one can be, he will be seen as a destroyer again, gaining more popularity and experience, which he needs. He will be on the Izzy undercard.

I would prefered if Khamzat fought in UFC London July, would enjoy seeing him live.

Nate was a legend in his time but that was a decade ago. He's just took too much tissue damage down the years, he cuts open if he blows his nose these days. Not sure why he's still getting fights like this, I mean he was a great, but he's not that fighter now.

I think Nate just wanted a way out of UFC, wanting to fight Youtubers for bigger money.

The official trailer for the fight has dropped.

In MMA there is always a chance for the underdog as we saw with Leon recently beating Usman. If the fight goes to the 5th round, it will mean Diaz could win.

In my own MMA circle I don't think of any recent fighter whose credibility has taken a sharp decline as has Khamzat's. And it all boiled down to him missing his weight by 8 pounds and he did not even show a glimpse of contrition.

You are a "professional" fighter and you miss your weight by a whole 8 lbs. Ridiculous really.

I am not even sure if this card will even happen.

Khamzat hopefully will learn from this the hard way. He beat one legitimate elite opponent in Burns and that too in a closely contested fight and that seems to have gone to his head.

How did this even happen, was he carrying any niggles? any reports of a bad camp? or maybe issues behind the scenes with pay and what not

So, Dana had no choice but to shuffle the card.

Khamzat is now fighting Kevin Holland at a "catchweight".

The main card is now Tony Ferguson vs Nate Diaz. Two certified legends from the past but will this be a high quality fight?
 
Huge respect for Kevin Holland for taking this fight at such a short notice and against a fighter like Khamzat. Whether he wins or loses Kevin's already won the respect of the fans. He's essentially saved the card.

Wait so you’re saying him missing weight wasn’t his unprofessionalism but rather a UFC ploy?
 
A fighter's ability and a fighter's personality attributes and lifestyle are two completely different things. 99.9% of UFC fighters' lifestyle or behavior is not what I wish to emulate.

So having laid that out, whatever you think of Khamzat's attitude - you cannot ignore that he has a fighting style that fans like and he wreaks havoc in the octagon.

But as far as this fight is concerned - he was a heavy favorite against Kevin Holland. I mean he was not even meant to fight Kevin. Typically these fights are announced months' in advance and a lesser fighter would obviously need more time to prepare for a particular style of fighting. So Kevin knew he was walking into a lion's den and promptly got decimated. It was incredible how quickly Khamzat took him to the ground and rag-dolled him.

But this adds nothing to Khamzat's legacy. For most casual or normal fans Kevin Holland is not even particularly known.

Look forward to the next fight of Khamzat's - hopefully this time against a proper elite opponent. After Burns he should have fought a higher ranked fighter anyway. But UFC business does not work like that. Otherwise they would have never had Nate Diaz fight Khamzat in the first place.

Do you know why he had a difficult cut?

This isn’t something new but I am interested to understand why weight cuts are not managed so well compared to Boxing, it seems to me MMA fighters literally kill themselves each time. Do they not get enough time or what? I guess they are guaranteed x amount so I don’t know the level of financial penalty for missing weight while in Boxing there are serious financial penalties. Or was this a case of a poor camp? he was last out in April, say he took off a couple of months including Ramadan! he would have gone into camp in June, 12 weeks is plenty of time. MMA weight divisions don’t mimick Boxing, the initial bout was scheduled for 171lb right? which is closer to 175lb in the light heavyweight division in Boxing, are fighters unnecessarily cutting beyond their physical limits and then desperately wait to rehydrate by 20-30lb ?

8 pounds though suggests it was deliberate and from what I hear he was advised to stop cutting further for safety

But I do feel the UFC need to review their weight limits for each division

This reminds me of the casuals who worshiped AJ because he’s such a nice and humble guy.

These people go to war, who gives a crap about the rest? I really enjoyed the fight highlights, he played with this Kevin bloke like how a lion plays with his food

Was this fight in the US? Khazmat got booed heavily but he can play up the heel role and become a bigger attraction

But knowing Dana he's probably trying to protect Khamzat as Khamzat is arguably the hottest property of UFC.

Now as far as weight cuts are concerned since I do not follow boxing - I do not know the comparative dynamics involved in weight cutting in both fight forms.

As far as UFC is concerned I personally feel the weight classes are too widely spaced out. I do not know how many weight classes are there in boxing and what is the average difference in weight between two weight classes.

In UFC as you know on an average there's a 25 pound weight gap between weight classes. And the heavier the weight class goes up the tougher it is for a fighter to cut weight to the lower class.

And for a fighter like Khamzat who has actively fought in two weight classes -Welterweight and Middleweight - the difference between these two weight classes is 15 lbs on an average.

Which is why eventually they made a "catchweight" category which is neither here nor there.

But I agree with you - there's been too many UFC fighters who nearly fainted during weigh in sessions.

Man in the modern era that gap is insane to say the least! there are critics who argue there are too many divisions in Boxing but in UFC it’s the opposite. Dana White needs to introduce new divisions to protect fighters and ensure competitiveness / allow the safe movement between weights. There is plenty of talent out there and it would be a good opportunity to grow the UFC.

And on the weight issue involving Khazmat it was a good call on Dana’s end. How does Khazmat tend to perform at 171, are his endurance levels good towards the end of the distance? does he have gas tank issues deeper in a fight, does his offence begin to lack pop ? if so then he could be really tight at 171 and weight drained / may need to move up

Why has he not received a world title shot as of yet? He just seems to be running through these guys but is there a reason the title shot is being held off?

Got to feel for Dana though, he would’ve wanted at least 3 rounds from the co main, might have to get Khamzat to fight twice in one card.

He’s only had 2-3 fights at middleweight, plus he’s coming back from an illness so he’s not been as active.

They’ll probably have him fight Adesanya, and strickland vs the South African

It’s worse, brutal injury . Khamzat went early for the kill , knowing his wrestling is far superior. He deliberately went for the chin , the squeeze must have felt like iron vice , breaking the jaw . Hope he recovers well . Khamzat will be champion soon .

Adesanya has no chance against Khamzat, his biggest weakness is against wrestlers who take him to the ground, and Khamzat is the best there is at that. A far more interesting fight would be against Strickland who's high pressure boxing has been too good for some of the best fighters. He doesn't look particularly skilful, but he just keeps out-hitting his opponents relentlessly until they wilt. I think Khamzat would maul him though.
