Karachi, 29 November 2021: Sindh will begin the seventh-round of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2021-22 from an unfamiliar top position in the six-team points table. Sindh had failed to make it to the top-three in either of the previous two seasons since the revamped domestic structure was put in place in 2019.

This season has brought a positive change in fortunes for the Asad Shafiq-led side that thumped Balochistan by an innings and 188 runs in their round-six match to not only record their first win of the season but also accumulate enough points (28) to upstage Southern Punjab at the top of the table.

Sindh have a tally of 80 points. Central Punjab, who also registered their first win of the season in the previous round, a resounding innings victory over Southern Punjab, are at number two on the table with 76 points.

The innings defeat to Central has brought Southern down from the top to the third spot with 74 points.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa are placed fourth. They also recorded their first victory of the season, a closely fought four-wicket triumph over Northern at the NBP Sports Complex, Karachi.

Northern are fifth with 53 points while Balochistan are a point behind and languishing at the bottom spot among the six teams.

Southern Punjab will take on Balochistan in their seventh-round fixture at the UBL Sports Complex, Karachi.

Imran is Balochistan’s leading run-getter with a tally of 510 runs in six matches at 56.67. The 23-year-old has a tally of 27 wickets in eight first-class matches so far. Leg-spinner Abrar Ahmed recorded the best innings figures of the season as his six wickets for 40 runs in the sixth-round match sent Balochistan packing for an innings defeat.

Sindh Opener Ahsan Ali has been in smashing form this season, after posting a triple-century, the right-hander plundered the Balochistan attack with a scintillating 194 in the previous game. Ahsan is third amongst the highest run-getters (567 runs in only three matches at 283.5). Left-arm-spinner Mohammad Asghar has collected 20 wickets so far for Sindh.

The joint reigning champions will also be relying on their experienced middle and lower-order led by Adil Amin, the right-hander pulled his side out of trouble in the first innings against Northern last week with the help of contributions from seasoned all-rounders Asif Afridi and Khalid.

Adil scored 128 in his rearguard effort that lifted the side from a precarious 77 for six in the first innings to their eventual four-wicket win in the match. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be further bolstered by the return of the seasoned Iftikhar Ahmed who was part of Pakistan T20I side on the tour of Bangladesh.

The left-hander hit 34 fours and three sixes as Central Punjab posted a mammoth first innings score of 459 after restricting Southern Punjab to 228. Rizwan ensured that Central don’t miss their top run-getter Abid Ali (611 runs), Abid is currently playing the first Test for Pakistan against Bangladesh in Chattogram. Amongst the bowlers, pacer Mohammad Ali (17 wickets) and left-arm-spinner Zafar Gohar (17 wickets) have served the side well in the tournament so far. I have said this before and I'll say it again, making the tournament a six-team affair was a good idea but we need more rounds in the tournament instead of two along with better talent distribution to get some improvements in the players. The QEA should be held in one city each year to remove the travel issues and have at least three rounds if not four. The matches should be played over five days (a trial should be held) as well to see if that improves the temperament of our players.

Our premium players should also play a few rounds of this instead of the T20 dross that we continue to play these days. Once the team is back in Pakistan, elite talent like Rizwan, Babar, and Shaheen should be rested from the Windies T20 series and asked to play one or two rounds of the tournament. We have enough T20 players in the country who can fill in the shoes of these players and we have already qualified for the next world cup so the result of the series really doesn't matter.

A T20 fifteen like this should be something that we can easily try against the Windies without worrying about the consequences so much.

Babar really needs to get his test groove back, playing the T20's so much is really causing a negative impact on his technique and we cannot afford this at all with more test assignments coming our way.

Not sure if 5 day first class match can be played. That will probably qualify as a test match.

Sindh eye place in final, Quaid-e-Azam Trophy round-eight begins Monday.

Karachi, 5 December 2021: The eight-round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2021-22 season begins at three Karachi venues from Monday. Table-toppers Sindh are eying their first-ever spot in the revamped tournament’s (2019-20 onwards) 25-29 December final at the National Stadium Karachi.

Sindh have had a dramatic change in fortunes after recording back to back wins since the 2021-22 edition of the prestigious tournament moved to Karachi following the first five rounds in Punjab.

After a single result in the first 15 matches played in Punjab, the tournament sprung to life since moving to Karachi with results in as many as five out of the six matches played in the city so far.

The trend is expected to continue with the three eight-round matches commencing from tomorrow.

Sindh will take on Northern in their eight-round fixture at the UBL Sports Complex, Karachi.

Sindh are on a high after registering a fine comeback victory over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the State Bank Stadium courtesy a six-wicket haul by left-arm pacer Mir Hamza in KP’s second innings on Friday.

Hamza (second-most wickets in the tournament – 23) and the Sindh battery of pacers (Sohail Khan, Mohammad Hasnain and Shahnawaz Dahani) were the architects of the 127-run win which earned Sindh their impressive victory following their comprehensive innings thrashing of Balochistan in the sixth-round.

They will however be up against a rampant Northern side that handed a nine-wicket drubbing to Central Punjab at the National Bank of Pakistan Sports Complex courtesy a maiden double century by Haider Ali and first-class career-best bowling performance by Haris Rauf.

Both Haider and Haris along with Shahnawaz are not going to feature in the match as they are set to join the Pakistan squad for the white-ball series against West Indies.

The win over Central Punjab earned Northern valuable points but they are still languishing in the fifth-spot in the table with 78 points, an outright win with bonus points will surely see them surge ahead in the table.

Southern Punjab tie against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the State Bank Stadium, Karachi will be live-streamed on PCB’s YouTube channel.

Southern Punjab arrived in Karachi at the top of the table but have since lost the top-spot to Sindh. After enduring a comprehensive defeat to Central Punjab in the sixth-round, Southern Punjab played out a draw against Balochistan in the seventh-round. The high scoring fixture at the UBL Sports Complex ensured that Southern Punjab don’t slip further then their second spot in the table.

They at present, enjoy a five point lead over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa who after beating Northern in the sixth-round lost to Sindh in their seventh-round fixture.

The top two run-getters in the season KP’s Sahibzada Farhan (688 runs) and Southern Punjab’ Tayyab Tahir (644 runs) will be hoping to play a leading role for their respective sides in their quest for crucial points as the teams vie for an entry into the tournament final.

Central Punjab to play Balochistan at the NBP Sports Complex, Karachi. Fourth in the table, Central Punjab will be eying valuable bonus points and a win over the sixth-placed Balochistan when the two sides clash in the eight-round fixture.

Both 2021-22 season matches at the venue have produced result with Central Punjab on the receiving end against Northern in the seventh-round match last week.

Central Punjab, the reigning joint champions, are currently 20 points behind Sindh and would need at least a draw with some bonus points in their kitty to retain a realistic chance of sealing one of the two final berths.

Balochistan with 64 points are still not totally out of the run for a final-spot. The team received a boost with the inclusion of Shan Masood in their ranks in the round-seven match. The left-hander responded with a blazing century as his side amassed a 606-run total with Ayaz Tassawar and captain Bismillah Khan also scoring centuries.

Balochistan would be hoping to maintain the batting form on a venue where bowlers have remained in the hunt in both round-six and seven matches.

Southern Punjab vs Khyber Pakhtunkhwa –State Bank Stadium, Karachi

Shan Masood hits second successive century

Karachi, 6 December 2021: The eight-round of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2021-22 season began at three Karachi venues today. On a day dominated by bowlers, Balochistan opener Shan Masood scored his second successive century.

At the UBL Sports Complex, Northern (fifth on the points table) got off to a fantastic start against table-toppers Sindh by reducing them to 70 for six in 25 overs before lunch. Northern who opted to bowl first were rewarded by their bowlers in the opening session of the match as Sindh’s batting line-up stuttered on a pitch that offered early help to the bowlers.

Sindh continued to lose wickets in the post-lunch session and declared their innings at 98 for nine (31 overs) to ensure Northern do not collect the full six bowling points that they would have salvaged by bowling out Sindh inside 100 overs. Omair Bin Yousuf (33) was the top-scorer for Sindh in what was otherwise a disappointing batting performance. For Northern, Ather Mahmood took four wickets for 23 while Kashif Ali captured three for 42.

In reply, Northern lost their openers with only 18 runs on the board before captain Umar Amin revived the innings with an unbeaten 118-run third-wicket partnership with Sarmad Bhatti. At close of play, Umar was batting on 69 (119 balls, 11 fours) while Sarmad was 53 (141 balls, six fours) not out. Northern ended the day at 136 for two, having already accumulated a 38-run first innings lead.

Sohail Khan took the two wickets to fall.

Over at the State Bank of Pakistan Stadium in the match between Southern Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa which is being live streamed on PCB’s YouTube channel, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa opted to bowl and their bowlers made most of the conditions by taking four Southern Punjab wickets in the morning session as lunch was taken with Southern Punjab wobbling at 51 for four.

Southern Punjab got some respite through all-rounder Muhammad Imran’s fighting 64 off 83 balls (four fours, four sixes). Like Sindh, Southern Punjab also managed to avoid conceding full six bowling points to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa by declaring their first innings at 166 for nine.

Fast bowler Arshad Iqbal took four wickets for 41. Left-arm-spinner Asif Afridi who is captaining Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in this match took two wickets for 36 runs.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were also off to a shaky start as they finished day-one at 45 for two. Opener Musadiq Ahmed and number three Israrullah were the two batters dismissed.

Over at the National Bank of Pakistan Sports Complex, Balochistan openers got their side off to a flying start by reaching 97 for no loss at lunch on day-one. Left-hander Shan Masood continued his rich vein of form by scoring his second successive century for Balochistan in as many appearances.

Shan hit 13 fours and three sixes in his 102 off 142 balls before falling to Bilawal Iqbal. Shan added 157 runs for the first-wicket with Imran Butt who contributed 65 off 136 balls (seven fours, one six).

After losing the openers, the Balochistan middle-order went cheaply to leave the side in slight discomfort at 247 for five. Ayaz Tassawar (36) and Kashif Bhatti (30) took the side to stumps without further loss. The two had so far added 36 runs for the sixth-wicket. For Central Punjab Hussain Talat and Zafar Gohar took two wickets each.

Good to see some results. Sorting these pitches out has to be a priority for next season. 25% of games drawn is a better level than over 50%

I completely forgot about Farhan, he was a poor man's Awais Zia when he made his debut.

Why is Abdullah Shafique in the PCT squad as the travelling reserve for WI series when he should be playing first class cricket like Abid Ali & co.

Nice to see Abrar Ahmed get a game. He completely disappeared after his 11 wicket haul. Strange.

In lahore there were dead wickets an 12 drawn matches...in karachi complete opposite

Sohail khan has been in good form but he's too old now to represent the pakistan side.

The other guy supporting him mir hamza has good figures this season , he should be given a chance in test cricket for Pakistan at the expense of m abbas . He deserves it .

Sameen gul is another but he averages 35 +

Arshad iqbal has good stats this year but there are concerns with his fitness level at test cricket same goes for irfanullah shah.

Mir hamza deserves an extended run , has played for Sussex as well.

Abrar Ahmed returns and gets a 6 wicket haul, no idea why he didn't play after his 11 wicket haul.

Noticing some weird declarations in recent rounds - Sindh on 155-9 and Central Punjab on 187-9 from their fixture.

Are they trying to deny bonus points to the opposition ?

Seriously what, 20 overs were lost in yesterday's play of televised match. Why isn't PCB doing anything, why can't they start half an over earlier. They shouldn't hold Quad e Azam trophy matches in Dec.

Some people never learn or perhaps don't want to learn.

Basically I came here to write this.

Babar Azam has issues with spin, playing 4 days domestic would have helped him especially before Australia series.

Yah they need to play domestic cricket to get better. Fawad alam and abid ali are still playing and scoring runs.

His technique looked dodgy yesterday not seen todays innings but i think this is nly his 2nd or 3rd good innings today

Its his first season and already 3 hundreds , over 700 runs. Looks amazing at the moment ,amazing timing.

huraira is a special player of spin, best by far in Pakistan apart from Fawad Alam. He is ideal for middle order but needs another season to be ready for Pakistan.

Did you look at his 6 against taj wali today . That was mind blowing. Very good cover drive as well . Looks like a well organized player as well.

He is decent against pace but his game is against spin is very good. We saw his potential against Afghanistan U19 where everyone was struggling against Afghan spinners

Hm.
Another good season and hopefully he is ready for international duty. The most impressive thing about him is the footwork.

Pakistan really now needs to look beyond Yasir Shah. He's been utterly toothless and has been for a good 3 years now.

People want more teams in the domestic tournament and here we cannot actually have six good teams because of various reasons.

Balochistan has Jalat Khan who's a left-arm spinner keeping and before that, it was Azeem Ghumman and Raza-ul-Hassan. Umer Akmal was played as a wicketkeeper when he hasn't really done any keeping before that; why was he picked straight away into the Balochistan team first 11?

Yasir Shah continues to gain weight, he's also standing in the slips or places where he doesn't need to run. The overrate and the captaincy is a joke from both sides and this is supposedly our premier cricketing competition.

I do feel sorry for Balochistan though. It's basically a "Rest of Pakistan" team in all but name because the local talent depth is still quite bare.

That's due to years of shameful neglect which is only recently starting to be addressed.

It's not just them, Central Punjab's batting looks very weak apart from the Test players and got bundled out for 110 all out on a deck where even Sajid Khan made 50.

There isn't a cricketing argument for expansion beyond six teams other than an emotional one about fewer opportunities etc.

Looking at this season's numbers. Huraira and Saad Khan amongst the youngsters who have scored well.

In the bowlers, disappointing to see the same names up amongst the leading wicket-takers and not many youngsters there apart from Kashif Ali and Mubasir.

Karachi, 21 December 2021: Northern have been fined for maintaining a slow over-rate in their fixture against Balochistan at the State Bank Stadium in the final round of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2021-22.

Northern were found six overs short of their target after taking into account time allowances and, as such, were charged under Article 2.22 of the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with the minimum over-rate offences.

As such, all members of the playing XI were fined PKR72,000. Northern captain Nauman Ali accepted the sanction proposed by match referee Nadeem Arshad. The charges were levelled by on-field umpires Nasir Hussain and Qaiser Waheed.

Everybody was saying Northern are in the final yesterday but i believe both Sindh and Khyber somehow managed to get 10 wickets in one day and are in one point ahead of Northern and in the finals.

Frankly think Sindh and KPK should be playing the final seeing as they both have 4 victories, 1 loss, 5 draws and have a better NRR than Northern. Batting/bowling points should be secondary way of determining who plays the final in my view.

In current point system, declaration at 9 down should be allowed only after 10 wicket partnership bats out 7-8 overs or strecthes beyond 15 runs. The trend of declaring at 9 wickets down is unprofessional behaviour but no rule against it.
The very basic concept of sports is to compete and win by performing better than others. PCB is training teams to win by crippling the opponents instead of training for fight.

I must have got the wrong info. It is Northern who are through then

Did you understand my statement? I said that the first weighting/priority should be victories/losses/draws, secondary NRR and then batting/bowling points.

BOTH KPK and Sindh have 4 wins, 1 loss and 5 draws as oppose to northern who have 4 wins, 2 losses and 4 draws. Hence, why I THINK both Sindh and KPK should be playing the final.

WHATTTTT?

Last time i checked Northern were the bottom team, how did they top the group to reach the finals???
