What's new

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (374 and 265) beat Northern (256 and 214) by 169 runs to win the QeA Trophy Final

Frankly think Sindh and KPK should be playing the final seeing as they both have 4 victories, 1 loss, 5 draws and have a better NRR than Northern. Batting/bowling points should be secondary way of determining who plays the final in my view.

doesnt work that way.

In First class structure, even in Englands structure there are various bonus points related to batting and bowling both.

NRR means nothing in first class cricket.

They even lost more games than Sindh.

that doesnt matter, because thats the point system that is adopted world wide in first class strucuture.

I am just surprised the turn around of Northern because after 4-5 games they were at the bottom of the table

Still don't think it's fair and next year they should apply a semi final stage as oppose to just top 2 play the final.

The standard of cricket is much higher than the pointless games between some random Bank and the local gas board but there is a long way to go. The pitches lack bounce and that stops international level players developing. For example we have seen the incredible effort of Hurraira but no one is sure what to make of it in the bigger scheme of things because he hasn't faced quick bowlers on a bouncy track. It's same with the same spinners- Ali Usman is amongst the highest wicket takers in the comp but his action looks that of part time bowler.

A disgraceful thing happened last night in Karachi as the finalists of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy were kicked out of the five-star hotel by the management.

The players and officials from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Northern were out in the streets due to Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)'s negligence.

According to the hotel management, both the teams had bookings till December 22. As the booking time was over, the teams were ordered to go out.

Later, the PCB management took action and arrangements were made for the teams to stay at another hotel. Due to this process, the biosecure bubble of both the teams was broken.

It must be noted that PCB chairman Rameez Raja is also staying in the same hotel. The pink-ball final is scheduled to start on Saturday at National Stadium in Karachi.

This is ridiculous. Is that what PCB meant by bio secure bubble?

Speaking to the media, the PCB chairman said the matter was brought to his notice last night and added an investigation is being conducted as to why the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy finalist teams were kicked out of the local five-star hotel.

Pretty unprofessional from the hotel, should've just let them stay and let Ramiz sort it out with the manager or something. Only need it for 5 days and I'm sure PCB can give them extra.

I think the rooms might have been booked for those dates otherwise no hotel will refuse .

Imagine If It had happen whilst Wasim Khan was in charge

Yeah people would lose their minds even though the chairman isn't in charge of that or booking whatsoever.

Whoever is in charge of that is likely to lose their job though.

complete unprofessional behavior by the hotel, instead of kicking them out they should have asked PCB to confirm the stay.

Having said that, PCB should investigate the matter and hold the person in charge responsible for the fiasco.

Rameez raja as chairman..........

Now bio bubbles being violated and players being kicked out of hotels.

Had this been waseem khan there would had been 5 threads already...........

Also rameez said he is one man show thus this means he should be held responsible for this

Northern and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy in their sights

• PKR 10 million to be awarded to the winner of the five-day pink-ball final that will be played at the National Stadium, Karachi from Saturday

Karachi, 24 December 2021:

The five-day Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2021-22 pink-ball, day-night final will be contested by Northern and the joint-defending champions Khyber Pakhtunkhwa at the National Stadium, Karachi from Saturday.

The National Stadium staged the dramatic finale of the previous season between Central Punjab and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa which ended in a tie. Another absorbing final between two balanced and well matched sides is expected from Saturday.

After an action packed Karachi-leg of Pakistan’s premier first-class tournament, Northern and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa edged out Sindh to claim the top two spots in the six team points table.

Northern topped the table with 152 points from 10 matches (four wins, four draws, two defeats). Khyber Pakhtunkhwa sealed the second spot with a tally of 150 points from their 10 games (four wins, five draws, one defeat).

Sindh who were on top of the points table leading into the last two rounds, lost their way at the end and despite winning their 10th and final fixture against Southern Punjab finished with 143 points (four wins, five draws, one defeat).

The tournament came to life in the Karachi-leg after the Punjab-leg produced a single result in the first 15 matches.

Conversely, 14 out of the 15 matches played across three Karachi venues –NBP Sports Complex, State Bank Stadium and UBL Sports Complex, produced results as the teams fought tooth and nail for securing the two final spots.

Northern captain Nauman Ali: “We have peaked at the right time and due to an all-round effort secured a spot in the final. I have been hugely impressed by the fight shown by our young players in the final few rounds which resulted in us topping the table. The pink-ball final though will be a different challenge for players from both sides with conditions expected to change especially under the lights.

“However, I am confident that we possess the skills and the depth in our squad to compete at our best against a formidable side like Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.”

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa captain Iftikhar Ahmed: “This year’s tournament has proven to be as competitive as the previous two editions in the revamped domestic system. I am really pleased about our performances and how we have managed to secure a place in the final despite stiff competition. Our batters and bowlers have done admirably and raised the level of their game especially in the Karachi-leg which has produced results in almost every game.

“The pink-ball under the lights will be a big challenge for both sides and it in a way even things out. It is a bit of an unknown for both set of players so I feel the first two days will be crucial for both teams as they will seek to gain early advantage. I have full confidence in my players and I think they will rise up to the challenge as we seek our fifth consecutive domestic title across the three formats.”

Top performers:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa owe much of their top order and batting success to opener Sahibzada Farhan who presently occupies the number one spot in the run scorers chart with an impressive 924-run tally at 57.75 (three centuries, five half-centuries).

If Farhan manages to score 76 more runs in the final, he will achieve the 1000-run milestone for the season. Northern’s Mohammad Huraira has had a dream start to his first-class career, the 19-year-old right-hander who represented Pakistan in last year’s U19 World Cup in South Africa, has amassed 878 runs (three centuries, three half-centuries) in his debut season including a sensational 311 against Balochistan in the 10th and final round.

Huraira currently occupies the second spot behind Farhan, Southern Punjab’s Tayyab Tahir finished the tournament with 811 runs at 47.71.

Amongst the bowlers, Southern Punjab’s left-arm-spinner Ali Usman finished with 43 wickets and is likely to finish as the top wicket-taker of the season.

Usman is followed by Central Punjab’s pacer Mohammad Ali and Sindh’s seasoned fast bowler Sohail Khan with 32 and 30 wickets respectively.

Between the two finalists, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa pacer Sameen Gul is the leading wicket-taker with 29. Northern’s promising all-rounder Mubasir Khan has taken 25 wickets.

£2000 for being one of the best players in a 2 months tournament is a joke. pcb really need to put their money where their mouth is if they are serious about first class cricket and player development.

Northern win toss, decide to bowl first against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa in the D/N 5-Day final of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy being played at the NSK

Huraira & Haider to open for Northern could be potential ODI & test openers for Pakistan in the future. Hopefully at least one of them could cement his place as an ATG for Pakistan.

Sahibzada Farhan out for 0 and Fakhar Zaman out for 4. Both wickets to Waqas Ahmed.

KP steady now at 77/2

Kamran Ghulam and Ashfaq Ahmed batting well.

Looks a good surface, little bit of grass perhaps to protect the pink ball.

Kashif Ali has a nice bustling action.

Mubasir Khan has bowled with control although doesn't appear a big turner of the ball. Seems a decent second spinner.

Been a good partnership for KP.

Good partnership between Kamran and Iftikhar Ahmed

Yes could be a gun number 6 if his batting continues to improve who can be a second spinner in SENA and 3 spinner in asia

Great batting by Iftikhar. Pitch has become really flat despite the new ball though.

Well played Ifti. Departs after a well made hundred.

We do poke fun at his age fudging but he does have a grittiness about him.

advantage slightly to northern id say, kp have a longish tail, if they can be bundled out for 325 northern would fancy piling on runs considering rohail will pbly come in at 8. there's not much spin or seam movement after the first session.

huraira
bhatti
umar amin
haider
riaz
nawaz
mubasir
rohail

is pbly the deepest first class batting order ive seen in pak domestics ever. ironic given ppl thought northern would struggle with batting when this format of qea trophy started.

thinking kp have missed a trick by playing wasim jr. irfanullah has had good stats this year. a lot will be on imran khan jr and sajid khan. huraira (if he lasts long) vs sajid should be a great contest.

also from what little i watched, the cricket looked a good standard, lots of correct cricket shots, some decent line and length bowling, and good fielding. will be a tough game for either team to come through in the end.

Karachi, 25 December 2021: Captain’s innings from Iftikhar Ahmed helped Khyber Pakhtunkhwa post 252 for five on the opening day of the five-day pink-ball final of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2021-22 at the National Stadium in Karachi on Saturday.

The right-handed batter Iftikhar brought up his first century of the tournament facing 168 balls. He stitched a 104-run partnership for the fourth wicket with Kamran Ghulam who scored 72 off 196 balls, hitting 11 fours. The right-handed Kamran fell to Mohammad Nawaz in the final session of the day. Iftikhar was the last wicket to fall on the first day, when he was bowled by Waqas Ahmed for 102 facing 170 balls, which included 13 fours. Wicketkeeper-batter Rehan Afridi (23, one four, 53b) and Asif Afridi (three off seven) will resume their batting tomorrow.

For Northern, Waqas picked three wickets for 52.

Earlier Northern won the toss and opted to bowl first. Regular captain Nauman Ali was side lined due to a foot injury, Umar Amin was named the side’s captain for the final.

Seasoned pacer Waqas provided Northern the perfect start by sending back Fakhar Zaman and this season’s leading run-getter Sahibzada Farhan on consecutive balls of the second over the match.

The experienced pair of Ashfaq Ahmed and Kamran took Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to 77 for two at tea, adding 71 runs in the first session for their third wicket alliance.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa lost Ashfaq’s wicket soon after the break, the right-hander fell for 45 off 92 balls (five fours) with off-spinner Mubasir Khan taking his wicket – the 26th of the season for the youngster.

Captain Iftikhar joined Kamran at the crease after Ashfaq’s departure, Kamran reached the 13th half-century of his first-class career off 131 balls (nine fours).

Kamran and Iftikhar added 73 runs till the break, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were 158 for three at dinner after 55 overs.

Scores in brief:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 252-5, 87 overs (Iftikhar Ahmed 102, Kamran Ghulam 72, Ashfaq Ahmed 45; Waqas Ahmed 3-52)

Match points so far: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 2; Northern 1

I saw the highlights but Chacha Ifti looks a good bet for PK test team. I know he is a figure of fun but he looks a notch above the likes of Ghulam with a proper technique and shots.

Four things I want to see in this match. And four questions that I want to see an answer to:

1. Does Sameen Gul have the potential to be a tall SENA-specialist fast-medium bowler like a poor man’s Hazlewood?

2. I think that Mohammad Rizwan is the second best Pakistani Test batsman, so he needs to play as a specialist batsman. Does Rohail Nazir have the potential to bat at Number 6 in Tests and keep wicket? If he has the potential - not current level, just potential, then he’s my Test keeper straight away.

3. Exactly what is Mubasir Khan’s batting potential? He will only ever be a Shadab-style support spinner in Tests - but can he bat well enough to play at Number 5?

4. How far away is Haider Ali from being selectable in Tests now that Abid Ali has a heart condition?

My Test team for the future is:

1. Abdullah Shafique
2. Mohammad Rizwan
3. Vacancy - Saud Shakeel in pole position
4. Babar Azam
5. Vacancy
6. Wicketkeeper-batsman - Rohail Nazir in pole position
7. Shadab Khan
8. Faheem Ashraf
9. Sajid Khan (Asia) / Naseem Shah (SENA)
10. Pace vacancy - Hasan Ali as temporary stopgap
11. Shaheen Shah Afridi

So for me, Rohail Nazir, Haider Ali and Sameen Gul are auditioning for the national team.

While Mubasir Khan has to prove that he could fill a Number 5 batting berth.

Mubasir and Shadab would be the only spinners required outside Asia - allowing a 4 man pace attack in all SENA Tests.

I’m totally uninterested in Iftikhar and Umar Amin - the past is behind us.

Waqas ahmed bowled really well got swing with the new ball.

Shame he's too old .

Kashif ali looks run of the mill.

And musa looked pretty average and nothing special the few overs I saw him bowl.

1. No, seeing him bowl before he is not pacy and doesnt really utilise his height well. also i know ppl get senstive abt this, but there is no planet on where he is actually 23, so hes pbly pretty close to his ceiling in terms of development.

2. Rohail is pbly the most over rated player on this forum, hes barely averaged 20 this season playing 5 games on absolute roads. his keeping is okay, but unless he levels up i don't think he'll even hold on to his first class spot at this rate next year if some talented youngster shows up.

3. wont find anything out until hes played about 25 or 30 games, but he has time on his side, and there isnt any immediate openings for him in the test team anyway.

4. pak selectors and management are usually too conservative to select a haider ali type. also he hasnt opened this season, if hes fighting for middle order spots, the struggle is even harder given saud and kamran ghulam are ahead of him.

The pitch is a road ..kpk have better bowlers for this pitch. Because it is a 5 day there might be a result otherwise no chance.

Haider Ali batting gloriously so far. Needs to cash in on this start.

He will be perfect for no 5 in tests don’t think he’s an opener for red ball. Really heartening to see young batters with solid potential.

Oh dear, Rehan Afridi drops a dolly. Asif Afridi deserved a wicket.

Huraira's gone into ODI mode :))

Mohammad Wasim is trying to bounce him out but these short balls haven't been well directed.

Huraira has a no nonsense approach towards batting and silky smooth foorwork. Looks more polished than haider ali.

out on 51 - says on cricinfo that he's singled to the umpire that his bat touched it before pads, was that true?

Haider is playing some beautiful shots through the covers.

When he first came up, I didn't think he would be a Test player long-term but he is showing a good defensive technique and showing the patience to play the format. 55 FC average in 10 matches going into this game. Nice to see how well he is doing.

I watched HA and he also looked excellent. He just has one problem and that is the planting of the left leg and playing around it. Simple solution open your stance but then that would affect his off side play.

both haider and huraira have issues, but they look like they could have much higher ceilings than some of the players who have played a significant amount of games for pak over the last decade or two.

if u do a direct comparision huraira has a superior technique, especially against spinners, and seems to have a mental calmness about his batting but is obviously not a natural against the short ball. haider is more powerful, and has more natural flair against the pace bowlers but appears prone to brain farts, and hasnt worked out his game against spinners.

this is where A cricket could be so handy, as its obvious both players will thrive at first class level but are likely to still have weaknesses that top international teams would exploit.

Karachi, 26 December 2021: The Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2021-22 day-night final between Northern and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is on course for an exciting finish as Northern finished day-two at 184 for three in their first innings in reply to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s 374-run first innings effort on Sunday at the National Stadium, Karachi.

Shortly before close of play Northern captain Umar Amin (4) was dismissed by Sameen Gul which left the match evenly poised. Northern will start day-three 190 runs behind Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with seven first innings wickets standing.

Northern’s in-form young opening pair of Haider Ali and Mohammad Huraira got their side off to a flying start. The two right-handers played a series of stunning drives as the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bowlers struggled to find movement off the pitch under lights.

The duo took Northern to 96 for no loss at dinner, shortly after the resumption of play, Huraira was dismissed for 51 off 65 balls (seven fours, one six), the fourth fifty of his maiden first-class season. Off-spinner Sajid Khan dismissed him lbw.

Haider looked poised for his fourth first-class century before falling to Sajid in an attempt to clear the long-on boundary. His 81 came off 131 balls and included 14 fours.

Earlier, resuming at the overnight first innings score of 252 for five, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were helped beyond the 350-run mark by all-rounder Asif Afridi who scored 68. Asif was involved in useful 39 and 63 run partnerships with Sajid Khan (22) and Mohammad Wasim Jnr (21).

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were bowled out for 374 shortly after the tea break. For Northern off-spinner Mubasir Khan took four while pacer Waqas Ahmed took three wickets.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa collected three batting points in the first innings while Northern had to settle for two. After the first 100 overs, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were 308 for seven.

Scores in brief:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 374 all out, 118.2 overs (Iftikhar Ahmed 102, Kamran Ghulam 72, Asif Afridi 68; Mubasir Khan 4-52, Waqas Ahmed 3-94)

Northern 184 for 3, 56 overs (Haider Ali 81, Mohammad Huraira 51; Sajid Khan 2-30)

Match points so far: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa –three. Northern – two.

Seems like you don't rate Kamran Ghulam, Muhammad Hurraira or Shahnawaz Dahani that highly

Kamran Ghulam has had a rotten season. In 3 First Class matches he has a single 50 in five innings. Given that he is already at least his official age of 26, I'd rather go down a generation in age.

Mohammad Huraira has promise, but his season record is bloated artificially by that 300. Take it away and 939 runs in 17 innings becomes 618 runs in 16 innings, and he is barely averaging 40 in a season in which even Test failures like Imam-ul-Haq and Shan Masood are averaging 106 and 71 respectively.

Shahnawaz Dhani has only taken 5 wickets in 2 matches this season, at an average of 28. For me, he hasn't done enough with the red ball to be considered, but there is a much worse problem which makes him UNSELECTABLE.

Pakistan already has a Number 11 in Shaheen Shah Afridi and I will never again - never ever ever - accept the selection of multiple Number Elevens. It's just a guarantee that you will lose matches you should draw, which has been a Pakistan specialty since the exit of Imran Khan (who often refused to have Saleem Jaffer and Aaqib Javed in his Test teams because they could not bat).

Shahnawaz Dahani has the following record in official cricket:
10 runs in 14 First Class innings - average 1.11
0 runs in 3 white ball innings
10 runs total across all formats in 17 innings in 38 matches.

So no, I'm very sorry, but I have a minimum selection condition for Shahnawaz Dahani. He can be considered for selection when EITHER he has scored 200 First Class runs OR he is a good enough bowler that Shaheen Shah Afridi can be dropped from the squad to accommodate him.

I'm sorry, but I just won't tolerate batsmen who can't field or bowlers who can't bat. Those days are over.

Fair enough.

But I feel like Aus are also carrying two number 11’s in Lyon and Hazlewood. You yourself said Lyon can’t bat but plays because of Green.

Also wouldn’t Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi be considered as two genuine number 11’s ? As far as I remember you wanted both in the team.

For me, I won’t pick Hasan Ali unless he can last 40 balls every Test innings and average 20 from Number 9, and I won’t pick Naseem Shah unless he can last 30 balls every innings and average 13-14 from Number 10.

One bowler can be a hopeless batsman. And until 2035 that one bowler is Shaheen Shah Afridi.

All other bowlers are excluded from selection until 2035 unless they can guarantee to last

1. 30 balls per innings from Number 10,
2. 40 balls per innings from Number 9 or
3. 50 balls per innings from Number 8.

Shahnawaz Dahani is incapable, so he only gets in the squad by Shaheen being dropped.
