What's new

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (374 and 265) beat Northern (256 and 214) by 169 runs to win the QeA Trophy Final

just goes to show what an impact an untimely dismissal like haiders has. northern folded in front of wasim jr, disappointing given how deep they had packed their batting order.

kp likely to try to get to 200 by day end, bat a bit tomorrow and set northern around 350 to win.

Horrible collapse of 7-36 for Northern. Looks like we may have a result after all.

Good to see the pitch. The ball is carrying to slip on day 4.Also there is help for good spinner.

KPK fast bowling riches currently

2. Arshad Iqbal (Tall, good bounce but lacks accuracy. Pace: 135-140 kph range)
3. Sameen Gul (Tall, seam, bounce can set up batters. Pace: 135-145 kph range)
4. Shaheen Shah (Tall, international material. Pace: 135-150 kph range)
5. Imran Khan Sr. (known quantity, good at the domestic level. Pace: 130-140 kph range)
6. Muhammad Waseem Jr. (Raw, can bat a bit. Pace: 135-145 kph range)

That's a pretty good bunch of bowlers to work with

Add Ahmed Khan to the list as well. Future looks very impressive for this region.

There is Sirajudin as well who looks like a fine prospect.

Wasim, Arshad Iqbal and Musa seem like test material.

Not convinced with Hasnain, Rauf, Akif etc for tests uptill now atleast.

has actually been a good match, waseems pace in the middle overs swung it for kp. i was skeptical abt his selection but it might prove the difference between both teams.

having said that northern have played the defensive position well, they havnt let kp run away with it and kp will have to bat at least 25 overs tmoro to get the target about 350.

whens alls said and done that may leave northern around 70 overs to get 350, which may give them the freedom to hit out.

Karachi, 28 December 2021: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa have one hand on the prestigious Quaid-e-Azam Trophy after a commanding performance on day-four of the five-day, day-night final of the 2021-22 edition at the National Stadium, Karachi on Tuesday.

After winning the first innings points race besides a 118-run lead, the Iftikhar Ahmed-led Khyber Pakhtunkhwa reached 152 for five at close of play in their second innings, an overall advantage of 270 runs with five second wickets in hand.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were in a spot of bother at dinner at 69 for four. In the final session of play, they lost the wicket of Asif Afridi after a dogged 60-ball 15. But an unbroken 49-run sixth-wicket stand between captain Iftikhar Ahmed (20 not out) and wicketkeeper Rehan Afridi (42 not out, 61 balls, five fours, one six) took Khyber Pakhtunkhwa to a formidable position by close of play.

Earlier, eleven wickets fell in the first two sessions on Tuesday. After losing four wickets in relatively quick succession before the tea break, Northern lost three more in a jiffy after the break, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa lost their first four till the dinner break with Fakhar Zaman blazing away with 50 off 53 balls (nine fours, one six) before falling to pacer Musa Khan minutes before the end of the session.

Northern took tea at 255 for seven after resuming their first innings at 184 for three. Despite losing Sarmad Bhatti for 57 (157 balls, three fours) Northern were well placed at 220 for three before a sensational spell on the eve of the tea break by Mohammad Wasim Jnr turned the match on its head.

The Waziristan-born pacer took three wickets in the space of 10 balls to leave Northern reeling, Wasim dismissed Faizan Riaz (30) and Mubasir Khan (0) in the same over before getting rid of Rohail Nazir courtesy an outstanding catch in the slips by Kamran Ghulam.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s stunning afternoon continued post tea-break as Northern folded for an addition of a mere one-run. They were bowled out for 256 in 83.2 overs handing Khyber Pakhtunkhwa a 118-run first innings lead and more importantly four bowling points.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa collected a total of seven first innings points while Northern had to settle for four, if the match ends in a draw on day-five (tomorrow), Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be declared winners due to their higher first innings points tally.

Northern need an outright win to secure the trophy.

Scores in brief:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 374 all out, 118.2 overs (Iftikhar Ahmed 102, Kamran Ghulam 72, Asif Afridi 68; Mubasir Khan 4-52, Waqas Ahmed 3-94) and 152 for 5, 54 overs (Fakhar Zaman 50, Rehan Afridi 42 not out; Musa Khan 2-37)

Northern 256 all out, 83.2 overs (Haider Ali 81, Sarmad Bhatti 57, Mohammad Huraira 51; Sajid Khan 4-54, Mohammad Wasim Jnr 4-65)

First innings points: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – Seven. Northern – Four.

having seen highlights of the game, the difference between the level of cricket on display now, and lets say four or five years ago is obvious. the new system is producing good cricket, and if its left in place for two or three years it will only get better.

Def much better, very few that don't deserve to be there. No place to hide for poor players because people are watching. And if the wickets get more bounce than the last vestiges of the jobs for life brigade will also be history.

They need to produce the feeder base underneath this six-team structure for this to be successful otherwise it won't last long. We all know how this is the vision of just one person and once the new government takes over we'll revert back to the department system or some other amalgamation of the older system. Currently, KPK can almost field an international level quality team from their resources while Balochistan struggles to field a domestic level team despite importing talents from other regions.

KPK could have fielded this team for the final as there was no international cricket ongoing but they chose to give rest to the international players.

Fakhar. Ishfaq. Sahibzada. Kamran. Iftikhar. Rizwan. Wasim Jr. Asif. Sajid. Shaheen. Sameen.

That's a pretty solid team despite missing some players to injuries like Adil, Nabi, etc if you ask me this team can compete with some lower-tiered international teams.

Wasim spell yesterday was very refreshing I think he is a cricketer with an x factor I hope we give him a longish rope to find feet at top level

agree with you. unless we reach a point where all the old school players, who still have departmental contracts have retired and departments have disbanded their teams, there is massive risk that the system will be undone after PTI are gone. the patron in cheif model means that if the departments have the next PM's ear its pretty much certain.

also on second point, its not just KP

CP full strength team:
Abid, Shehzad, Azhar, Babar, Salahuddin, Ashfaq, Faheem, Zafar, Hassan, Bilal Asif, Mohamad Ali

would also be very strong, despite having lost abdullah shafique and naseem shah.

Northern are also likely to become quite strong given a lot of their premier players are quite young. just need a consistent pacer, and a keeper who contributes with the bat.

Does anybody know, In case of a draw, will KP win?

They had lead in the first innings.

This lady commentator and that sikandar seem to have no brain at all. They desperately want Kpk to lose saying give the opposition a chance. Who hired these idiots?

Fair play to Mohammad Nawaz.

He’s been brilliant with the ball. He has become a poor man’s Shakib-Al-Hasan, incredibly similar to Ravindra Jadeja.

This system has been successful in that the total dross has gone. It has produced cricket that looks like FC cricket with teams that look like FC teams. My only criticism is that we need more games and the players need to be paid better And along with good wickets, we have a recipe for success
If the govt changes no doubt the system will be gone. Everywhere else in the World the depts sponsor teams or buy franchises, these guys want total control without any responsibility. T

Unbelievably brainless run chase.

Their only chance after reaching 105-1 in 14 overs was to just aim to hit a run a ball for the next 20 overs.at 225-3 in 35 overs they could have given it a crack.

Instead they have slogged their way to oblivion.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 374 & 265 defeat Northern (45.2 ov, target 384) 256 & 214

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa win the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy Final by 169 runs

That ended up being the most pathetically brainless run chase that I have ever seen.

Whoever coaches Northern should get his IQ tested, because that was like watching lemmings race off the edge of a cliff.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa retained the prestigious Quaid-e-Azam Trophy with a resounding 169-run win over Northern in the five-day day-night final for the 2021-22 edition at the National Stadium, Karachi on Wednesday.

Northern who were set a 384-run target on the final day, went down fighting as they were bowled out for 214 in their second innings with 18.4 overs left in the final session of the match.

Huraira, later adjudged the best batter of the tournament, got Northern off to a flying start in their monumental chase. The right-hander made history when he scored the seventh run of his innings as he surpassed Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Sahibzada Farhan tally of 935 runs in the tournament, setting a unique record of topping the batting charts in his maiden first-class season.

The Sialkot-born played a series of delightful shots in his 57 off 49 balls (six fours). Huraira’s dismissal at 105 was a big setback for Northern as their hopes of chasing down the target subsided quickly. Captain Umar Amin followed Huraira to the dressing room after contributing 33 off 40 balls (three fours).

Northern kept losing wickets in their hunt for quick runs as Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bowlers kept making inroads. Northern were 156 for five at the dinner break and their batting efforts quickly subsided as the lower-order was sent packing cheaply.

Mubasir Khan, who was later adjudged the player of the tournament for his all-round contributions for Northern was the last player dismissed with a delighted Khyber Pakhtunkhwa captain Iftikhar Ahmed taking his catch off off-spinner Sajid Khan.

Sajid who took four wickets in the first innings added a five-wicket haul in the second innings to spearhead the Northern batting demise in the second innings.

Iftikhar who was later declared the player of the match for his all-round efforts in the final, took two wickets with his off-spinners while Mohammad Wasim Jnr took two wickets for 38 runs.

Earlier, resuming their second innings with a 270-run advantage, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa succeeded in taking their lead to 383 courtesy Rehan Afridi’s 79 and Sajid Khan’s valuable 39-run contribution in the lower-order.

Afridi who was unbeaten overnight, reached his 50 today. He was dismissed for an enterprising 79 off 110 balls (eight fours, one six). Sajid used the long handle effectively in his 39 off 48 balls (two fours, two sixes).

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were eventually bowled out for 265, setting Northern a 384-run target in a minimum of 64 overs. Left-arm-spinner Mohammad Nawaz took four while Musa Khan took three wickets conceding 65 and 71 runs respectively.

Scores in brief:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 374 all out, 118.2 overs (Iftikhar Ahmed 102, Kamran Ghulam 72, Asif Afridi 68; Mubasir Khan 4-52, Waqas Ahmed 3-94) and 265 all out, 79.2 overs (Rehan Afridi 79, Fakhar Zaman 50, Sajid Khan 39; Mohammad Nawaz 4-65, Musa Khan 3-71)

Northern 256 all out, 83.2 overs (Haider Ali 81, Sarmad Bhatti 57, Mohammad Huraira 51; Sajid Khan 4-54, Mohammad Wasim Jnr 4-65) and 214 all out, 45.2 overs (Mohammad Huraira 57, Faizan Riaz 49, Umar Amin 33; Sajid Khan 5-33, Iftikhar Ahmed 2-32, Mohammad Wasim Jnr 2-38)

First innings points: Khyber Pakhtunkhwa – Seven. Northern – Four.

Tournament was much better once it shifted to Karachi. Think Sindh should host FC matches with Punjab hosting the white ball competitions for now until all the pitches across the country improve.

The standard of FC cricket has improved immeasurably since 2019 with the deadwood being filtered out and a few youngsters making a name for themselves instead of being lost in the system.

It's First Class cricket.

Unlike in white ball cricket, better to come second with a draw than to come second by losing.

Additionally, for the likes of Haider Ali and Rohail Nazir they would have been better scoring 95 from 95 balls by fashioning a run a ball rather than slogging themselves to oblivion.

The whole point of first class cricket, especially for lads as young in their career as Rohail and Haider is to learn and develop. Sometimes that learning comes via failing spectacularly in a high stakes game. Hopefully they learn from this and kick on.

Good point.

The situation called for Michael Bevan, not Shahid Afridi.

They just needed to try every two overs to do something like this:

• 1 • 2 • 1
• 4 • 2 • 1

After 50 overs they would have been 275-3, requiring 100 runs in the last 12 overs.
