Hong Kong - Sri Lankan veteran Kumar Sangakkara has called for Test cricket to introduce a minimum match fee for all countries to stop young players ditching the long-form for lucrative Twenty20 leagues.

Sangakkara, the fifth-highest run scorer in the history of Test cricket, retired from the first-class game last year but has continued playing for domestic T20 franchises around the world, including in this week's Hong Kong T20 Blitz.

The 40-year-old praised the shorter format for spreading the game's popularity to new markets but warned that without change Test cricket could face a battle to remain relevant for young players and fans.

"T20 is the ideal format to introduce - you talk about the Americas, with China," Sangakkara told AFP on Wednesday.

"Since its inception it's been a huge pillar of strength for world cricket.

"But there are a few negatives ... a lot of young players taking up T20 instead of playing international cricket.

"There are various things that have been discussed, about parity of pay, especially when it comes to match fees for Test cricket.

"Shouldn't there be a blanket minimum pay for Test cricketers?

"The top countries are being paid a certain Test match fee - shouldn't that be reflected all throughout the Test-playing countries?"

Currently, international match fees paid to cricketers from different Test nations vary wildly, with the sport's so-called "Big Three" - India, England and Australia - far ahead of the rest.

According to a survey last year by ESPN CricInfo, Australia's captain Steven Smith was due to earn $1 469 000 in 2017 while Zimbabwean skipper Graeme Cremer pocketed just $86 000.

Twenty20 competitions have sprung up around the world, from Australia's Big Bash League and India's IPL which stretch out over many weeks to smaller competitions in Hong Kong, Bangladesh, and the UAE which last just a few days.

Players from poorer nations can often earn more in the Twenty20 world than by representing their countries at Test level.

The MCC world cricket committee last month endorsed calls for wage reform at its annual meeting.

Fans as well as players need to be canvased on the changes required to keep Test cricket as the sport's pinnacle, including day-night and four-day Tests, said Sangakkara.

"We need to understand what Test cricket means to players and what it is to fans," he said.

"Relevance in sport is so important in terms of not just growing the sport but also sustaining it.

"I think international cricket is very strong still. For any player, I think the honour of representing their country be it in Test, one-dayers or T20 cricket, it's still the pinnacle of the game."

Sangakkara, who is appearing for Galaxy Gladiators Lantau in this week's Hong Kong tournament, also praised the shorter format for extending his career.

"T20 is definitely the easiest format at my age to stay competitive in," said Sangakkara, who retired from the first-class game in September.

Sangakkara went out at the top with a remarkable final flourish for Surrey in the English county championship, finishing as the competition's top scorer with 1 491 runs at an average of 106.50.

"I'm definitely a has-been!" he joked

So you expect them to leave 100,000$ for 1,000$? If ICC is slightly serious about saving the game, they should be banning circus leagues and asking their sponsors to back ICC events or quit sponsoring.

The sponsors go where the fans are. So the important question is where are the fans going?

Logic has left the building. Effect is being confused with cause.

It's all about demand.

You can't pay what you don't have. Setting a "minimum" on per match earnings is nice until you realize the board itself is earning chump change.

The percentages being paid out are often relatively the same.

If ZIM earns $5M annually and pays $100,000 per squad member (15 players)

While AUS earns $50M and pays $1,000,000 per squad member (15 players)

It still come out to 30%.

The only solution would be for the richer boards to help out the poorer boards. This is a bad idea since AUS/IND/ENG will start finding Test cricket worthless too since it doesn't earn them enough after getting "taxed" by the ICC.

Not practically possible. Payment depends on the board earnings, and test matches on whole do not make great profit

Lol. Cricket will die without 'circus leagues' as you call them. T20 is subsidizing Tests at the moment, so you are out of luck.

And if ICC did this, someone with money would organize T20 leagues and profit from it. Ultimately, demand is there, so you can't do anything to stop it.

Cricket was doing good for a decade without those leagues.
Demand is also there for weed, would you think its okay to supply it like that? Need to see what's good for everyone. Such flashy things would do no good for the game no matter how attractive they look.

Sponsors go if you give them option to choose from IPL vs ICC. Sponsors were going to ICL but ICC stopped them. ICC should be directing fans leading to sponsor-ships but no, they've become greedy.

Why should the fans be directed by the ICC or anyone else for that matter. We live in a free world. Let the free market decide. Let there be IPL, ICC events and everything else. The fans can and should make up their minds on their own and watch what they want.

Spot on. If the ICC shuts T20 leagues down, someone else will pick it up. And they will not be under the ICC's jurisdiction.

There is a big difference between WEED and T20 Leagues. Weed isn’t legal, so supply will not be openly available but leagues are legal in their respective market, so they will continue to provide what the fans want. Whether you like it or not, no one got time to watch 5 days of boredom. Heck even the test purists who degrades T20 would not sit in front of TV and watch ball by ball from Day 1 to Day 5. Test cricket will never match the financial might of T20s and THATS A FACT.

ICC do not have power to control the market. If they try to control the market it might just create a rebel league that would cause them more worries. Just recently when India decided to boycott champions trophy, that gave them ultimate scar and here you’re talking about challenging the same market. Remember, most Indian fans aren’t cricket fans, we are INDIAN CRICKET FANS, we watch if our team plays. Sponsors will follow where the fans are, they could care less about moral grounds. They only care where they will get maximum return.

Losing an Indian market will basically means going back to an era where Aus and Eng used to play each other.

This is really dumb. Sponsors go where they think they can get the most exposure to whatever they are selling. They are not sponsoring to satisfy their social responsibility. They are sponsoring to sell their wares. ICC stopping a sponsor would be really foolish as that said sponsor will either sue ICC (ICC will be bound by some rules at wherever their jurisdiction lies and will have to pick their sponsors relatively transparently) or sponsors will just go and create their own league if they feel there is enough demand. In the worst case they would go and find some other sport/events to sponsor. Despite all the chest thumping by the fans committed to test cricket(I love all formats by the way), it needs money to succeed. As of now very few countries are breaking even when they organize a test match. I doubt if any board outside of Aus, Eng and India makes profit organizing test matches. Teams like Pakistan and NZ have been moving away from tests even before advent of T20s. When was the last time you saw Pakistan hosting a four/five test match series? It is only Aus, India, England and SA which host longer test series. Three out of those four boards have been accused of being too money oriented and the irony is that they are the ones who are actually giving some importance to test matches

Chinese ways of living won't work in the rest of the world. Despite what some of our fans think, most of the cricket playing nations are relatively free and love to exercise their free will. Fans will watch whatever brings joy to them. Fans will stand in line and buy tickets when they think it is worth their time and money to do so. No amount of ICC direction or naivety on the part of die hard test fans will change it.

Okay, people also want to fix games to earn cash, you'd allow them? No? There are always some limits. Right? That is the job of ICC, to make sure that NO NATION NO MATTER HOW POWERFUL IT SEEMS TAKES CONTROL OF THE GAME THROUGH MONEY OR OTHER WAYS.

Leagues are 'made' legal by same corrupt ICC which was supposed to keep it fair for everyone.

Okay, no one likes that. Agreed! But why IPL/PSL/T20B/CPL/BBL/Circus instead of International T20 games/cups?

They had this power before 2007. They let it go when their pockets are being filled in. They STOPPED ICL when their pockets were left out.

Indian fans would prefer to see their team playing against outsiders instead of inter-city.

If the ICC does force the T20's to shut down and focus on tests, a new entity will spring up, that is not under the control of the ICC. The entity will take the T20's and run with it. Along with that it will take the fans and the sponsorship. Resulting in potential revenue losses. The ICC will stand the loser.

and where is fixing legal? You cannot stop anyone making money legally. irrespective of how angry you get and how much shouting you do (your caps lock)

How do you know this? Because, all evidence to the contrary.

Let us INDIAN FANS DECIDE WHAT WE WANT TO WATCH

ID rather be watching IPL then these boring one sided bilaterals.

Okay you got to cool down. You are not thinking straight. ICC cannot make laws for another country. ICC cannot make any league illegal. Boards can make it illegal for their contracted players to play in leagues not directly supported by them. That is what BCCI did with respect to ICL. They can do that because they have a legal frame and agreement with the player. Players are free not to sign any agreement with their boards and go ahead and play in any league they want. That is what scores of WI Players and retired mercenaries are doing. There is nothing anyone can do about it. they are legally earning their livelihood. Just because ICC or some deranged fans don't like them, no one can go ahead and make leagues illegal

Just remember what is circus for you is entertainment for all those folks who are paying to attend that circus.

Who says Indian fans would prefer to see their team playing against outsiders? did you go and ask all Indian fans? the only practical way is to arrange both IPL and international T20 matches and see which makes profit. As of now IPL is making hell lot of profit so BCCI will arrange them. if tomorrow situation changes and suddenly T20Is are more popular they will arrange it. Not sure what is so difficult to understand basic finances

This guy retired when he could have played couple of more years and helped smoothen transition to youngsters. with such a bare bone bench SL is struggling to be relevant as an international team. what did he do after retirement? go around playing the same t20s leagues as a mercenary. So it is alright for him to give up on his country and make some money but not right for the boards to prioritize a format which brings them profit? Irony died a thousand death

You nailed it. Sangakara is a hypocrite and was cheat during his playing days.

Bury test cricket into the ground and build a road on it. This pathetic joke of a format should've died 40 years ago when ODI was introduced. Can't believe people indulge this crap in 21st century
