What's new

Lahore Qalandars (148 all out) beat Quetta Gladiators (131/7) by 17 runs in Match 18 of PSL 8

Sarfaraz is done. Both as a player and captain. Has been the case since 2019. Not sure why Quetta continue with him .

Waqar didn't hide his disgust for Sarfaraz slow batting. He didn't mince words that it wasn't the first time Sarfaraz came at number 6 and batted at less than a strike rate of hundred.

I wonder whether Quetta Gladiators sponsors demand any accountability. It is shambolic how Nadeem Omar is running the franchise and continuously striking with Sarfaraz as captain, Moin as coach and the same core group of players in the franchise.

The franchise definately needs a reset and a new direction.

Hafeez Iftikhar Sarfraz plenty of experience but not good enough to win a few matches in the PSL all 3 should be dropped for the remaining matches.

Shaheen Afridi | Lahore captain: (On his promotion to no.6 in batting) Reason was that we lost many early wickets and we needed to lengthen the batting, so I decided to go in there and try my best. There are games like these where you lose a lot of wickets early but what's important is for everyone to stick together. Raza and Rashid put their hands up today. The idea was to bowl your habituated lengths on this pitch and let the surface do the rest.

Sikandar Raza | Player of the Match: My plan was quite clear. I wanted to go hard. I didn't think that just batting out the overs and getting 110 was going to help us win. I just needed someone to bat along with me and fortunately Rashid did that. We eventually got 149, I thought maybe 10 runs short we were but nice to get the win. Me and Rashid agreed that we need to put pressure on the bowlers. There were a few overs where we didn't get boundaries but then we got one or two each over for a few overs. Was just telling Rashid yesterday that we've had some really good partnerships whenever we bat together, none more important than today. The fact that we run hard also helped us. The pitch was a bit two-paced, there was variable bounce and we always knew that we had a chance of defending 148.

Aaqib Javed | Lahore Qalandars Head Coach - It was an amazing win, this is what Rashid does, bring something with the ball. It's good for the team and for Shaheen, each and everyone contributed. Bowlers win you tournaments, no one can have a bowling attack like this, not even international teams. Sikander Raza is a brave man, he and Rashid have been a blessing for us. The crowd has backed Lahore a lot.

Sarfaraz Ahmed | Quetta captain: Yeah, wasn't a great day for us. We did bowl well, got them to 50/7 but then we let them get to 148. Can't give any good side that chance to come back in the game. We didn't bat that well either, especially in the middle overs where there were too many dot balls. Still felt that we could have gotten 52 off the last five if we had wickets in hand but wickets kept falling.

Best bowling line up in the tournament by a country mile.
What a Innings by Raza

Sikandar Raza’s splendid 34-ball 71 not out helped Lahore Qalandars to a miraculous 17-run win over Quetta Gladiators on Thursday night at the Gaddafi Stadium. Lahore Qalandars were seven down for only 50 at the halfway stage of their innings, but Sikandar’s sparkling innings propelled them to 148 after which an outstanding show with the ball restricted Quetta Gladiators to 131 for seven.

Lahore Qalandars lost four wickets for only 28 runs inside the Powerplay and by the end of the eighth over, they had half of their batters back in the pavilion after Quetta Gladiators inserted the hosts. But in an incredible rearguard effort, Sikandar pulled his side back in the contest, playing at a strike rate of 209.

The all-rounder put a 69-run stand with Rashid Khan who, with his 21 off 20, provided the desired stability from the other end. The pair took on the charge in the 13th over when they snatched 19 runs off Umaid Asif’s over. Sikandar dispatched Naveen-ul-Haq for three fours in the next over and hit Naseem Shah for another two in the 15th.

Rashid holed out in the 16th and that resumed the fall of wickets. Sikandar smoked two fours and a six towards the end of the innings to give his bowlers a respectable total to defend before Zaman Khan’s run out at the non-striker’s end in the last over brought an end to the innings. In total, Sikandar hit eight fours and three sixes.

Quetta Gladiators cruised to 53 in the Powerplay with Will Smeed playing the role of aggressor, but the dismissal of both openers in a span of six balls derailed what promised to be a smooth sail. Haris Rauf dismissed Yasir Khan on the last ball of the sixth in what was a brilliant over and Smeed fell to Rashid Khan on the last ball of the seventh.

From the end of the Powerplay to the beginning of the 12th, Quetta Gladiators could muster only 11 runs but at the cost of three wickets. Sarfaraz Ahmed made a consolation 27 not out off 28 balls, but failed to get any support as Haris sent back Odean Smith and Mohammad Nawaz.

Haris finished with three for 22 and Rashid took two wickets for 14.

Scores in brief:

Lahore Qalandars 148 all out, 19.2 overs (Sikandar Raza 71 not out, Rashid Khan 21; Mohammad Nawaz 2-19, Naveen-ul-Haq 2-36)

Quetta Gladiators 131-7, 20 overs (Will Smeed 32, Sarfaraz Ahmed 27 not out; Haris Rauf 3-22, Rashid Khan 2-14)

Player of the match – Sikandar Raza (Lahore Qalandars)

Lahore got out of jail courtesy Raza. Of course they have excellent bowlers but Raza's was key contribution.

Scratching my head as to how Quetta lost that match.

LQ were 50/7 and gone, but poor bowling and captaincy allowed them back into the match.

In T20s even one bad over can change the course of a match.

Quetta have had a forgettable season and Naseem Shah going missing at crucial stages has been a big factor. They have too many shot players who are too hit and miss i.e. Guptill, Hafeez, Roy, Iftikhar, Sarfaraz. No wonder they have only one win this season.
