What's new

Lahore Qalandars (241/3) easily beat Peshawar Zalmi (201/9) by 40 runs in Match 15 of PSL 8

Shaheen poor captaincy

He needs to use one of his seamers now

Lol these English guys will clear this 60 mtr boundary while having sandwich held in one hand.

Wow,these modern English batters with such effortless ball striking ability! Astonishingly SB & TKC aren't even good enough for second Eng XI. Babar actually saved himself from massive embarrassment, should thank Shaheen for that. He would have dragged himself to a 50 ball 70 at best. Now PZ actually can win this. They still have two more clean hitters on the bench.

TKC, the one guy who won Zalmi the opener. Or else, the Zalmi are a pure bottom table team.

At the halfway mark of this innings, PZ have now kept in line with the run rate required.

You expect Rashid Khan to deliver here with his subtle variations but he's been terrible.

Powell is equally as dangerous if not more than Cadmore

Need him out

Brilliant slower ball from Haris Rauf.

TKC wicket is huge. Looked flawless for his 55.

Saim Ayub is a better opener than Babar

Saim Ayub is a better number 3 than Babar

Being robbed of Fakhar-Sharjeel opening together in LOIs up until 2020-2021 is one thing.

But now we’re being robbed of Haris-Saim opening together. The tuk tuk opening pair always get a long rope in Pak.

Haris's slower ball is the best I reckon .. sametime he overdo it and become predictable on Int stage

Saim Ayub is a better opener than Babar

Saim Ayub is a better number 3 than Babar

Not only that. But him and Mohammad Haris seem to be the only true next-generation batting talent Pakistan has produced in that past few years (actually a decade). They could be opening together and Haris could be made captain.

Ouch... Rashid's experience get the better of the youngster.. well played and keep playing like that.

Fakhar, M Haris and Saim type of players are needed for their selfless performances. Their 50s are far superior to the match losing 50s of guys like Babar, Rizwan and Shan.

These players have class to hit centuries. But they are forced to be Sloggers due to other slow batters and passengers in the team.

Absolutely they must be playing T20 for Pakistan .add to that Azam khan if he sorts himself . Hope to see all 4 of them play for Pakistan together

Let’s not forget Fakhar Zaman and Sharjeel Khan too. They’re absolute guns to add to the arsenal.

Impressive bowling by Arshad Iqbal from the little I saw. That work with Ian Pont probably paying off.

Anyone else impressed by Shaheen's captaincy? Comes off as a pretty attacking captain.

Should have played Shanaka over Rajapaksa. He is the man for situations like these

Captained very well. The only thing he could've done better is to bowl that 3rd over in his first spell after dismissing Harris and Babar because TKC was always going to be the most important wicket. Fortunately for LQ, Haris Rauf bowled a good slower ball to dismiss him.

Even with injuries and without having 100% fitness, Shaheen still delivers. He's on a different level to all the other bowlers.

Pakistan's best bowler and player by a country mile.

LQ have reduced the intensity really.

They could have won this match by a much bigger margin.

Disagree. I think Shaheen at the death is just as important as Shaheen with the new ball. Had TKC played out his potential third over, Zalmi would have less to worry about. But with Shaheen, Rashid, Rauf all having overs remaining at the backend, Zalmi were never able to release the pressure. Even when they were going at 11 RPO.

If Zalmi were batting first then it could have been a different story.

It worked out today but TKC when set is a beast. You can't let him get set under any circumstances.

But at least Shaheen is developing his ability to bowl at the death because that's his only weakness. If he can get that right, he'll become the undisputed best white ball bowler in the world.

Needham is a waste of a pick. Useless with the ball and bat.

Shaheen used to be a very timid and shy individual. But recently he has been looking very confident as captain. So much more than the opponent.

I wouldn't call it a weakness. He's certainly not one of the premier death bowlers in the world. But he has been a pretty good death bowler for quite some time now. Even till a year ago he had one of the best economy rates at the death in T20Is (among fast-bowlers). Not to mention, he has one of the best yorkers in the world.

Lahore have the best bowling attack in the tournament. So much versatilely and variety in this attack.

Mis-match.

The best bowling attack of PSL8 against the worst bowling attack of PSL 8.

Babar Azam | Peshawar Zalmi captain: The way we started, we did well in the first 3 overs but after that, the batters put us under pressure. We lost it in the first six overs. When you are chasing such a big total, you try to keep the run-rate in check. Saim Ayub batted well, he has been in very good form. We need to improve our bowling. We conceded too many runs. If you do not execute your plans well, the batters will keep giving the charge and cash in. We need to correct our mistakes as soon as possible.

Fans in Lahore could not have asked for a better match than what they were treated to on Sunday night as a terrific 96 by Fakhar Zaman, a sublime half-century from Abdullah Shafique and Shaheen Afridi’s scorching five-wicket powered Lahore Qalandars’ to a 40-run win over Peshawar Zalmi at the Gaddafi Stadium.

Lahore Qalandars posted their highest HBL PSL score as incredible knocks from Fakhar, Abdullah and Sam Billings propelled them to 241 for three, which is also the third best score in the tournament history for any team.

Abdullah’s first HBL PSL 8 outing turned out to be an exciting one as he made 75 off 41 with the help of five sixes and as many boundaries. He arrived in the middle when Wahab Riaz rattled Mirza Tahir Baig’s stumps in the second over. He played the role of aggressor in chief during his 120-run partnership with Fakhar Zaman.

But, when Abdullah fell in the 13th over, Fakhar unleashed his batting firepower and at times it seemed that the Peshawar Zalmi bowlers had nowhere to hide.

Fakhar smoked 10 sixes – the joint-second most in an HBL PSL innings – in the 45 balls he played, along with three fours. He was supported well by Sam Billings, who returned not out on 47 after playing 23 balls, as the two racked up 88 runs in just 30 balls, before Fakhar fell in the 18th over.

Shaheen produced a scintillating opening spell accounting for Mohammad Haris on the very second ball with a perfect yorker and striking Babar Azam’s middle stump in the third over. That fiery burst upfront took away the realistic chances of the run chase, but Saim Ayub’s 34-ball 51 – full of gorgeous-looking strokes as he struck seven fours and two sixes – and Tom Kohler-Cadmore’s defiant 55 off 23, which was studded with five sixes and three fours, made for fantastic viewing for the jam-packed crowd.

Saim and Kohler-Cadmore added 91 for the third wicket before the latter was removed by Haris Rauf in the 11th. Saim Ayub fell in the next over to Rashid Khan. Three overs later, Zaman Khan dimissed Bhanuka Rajapaksa, who holed out to deep long on off Zaman Khan after an exciting cameo of 24 from 14 balls, and bowled Rovman Powell.

From there on, it was Shaheen’s show as he first sent back Wahab in the 17th and removed Saad Masood and Jimmy Neesham in the 19th. Peshawar Zalmi finished on 201 for nine.

Lahore Qalandars now have three wins from four matches and host Islamabad United tomorrow night. Peshawar Zalmi – who have lost three matches and won two – travel to Rawalpindi to play Karachi Kings on 1 March.

Scores in brief:

Lahore Qalandars 241-3, 20 overs (Fakhar Zaman 96, Abdullah Shafique 75, Sam Billings 47 not out; Wahab Riaz 2-45)

Peshawar Zalmi 201-9, 20 overs (Tom Kohler-Cadmore 55, Saim Ayub 51, Bhanuka Rajapaksa 24, Rovman Powell 20; Shaheen Afridi 5-40, Zaman Khan 2-28)

Player of the match – Fakhar Zaman (Lahore Qalandars)

Record number of sixes today. Are the boundary dimensions in line with international standards?

Boundaries were well in.

I don't think they confirmed what the ground dimensions were.

Securing Zim Afro T10 title and successful player development program in Zimbabwe are our two major achievements in one month, Chief Executive Lahore Qalandars Atif Rana

Chief Executive Lahore Qalandars Atif Rana has described the successful launch of player’s development program and securing the first Zim Afro T10 title as two major achievements of Lahore Qalandars. “We have been approached by many cricket playing nations as they are interested to adopt such fast track talent hunt system. The demand of the coaches and the players of Lahore Qalandars has significantly increased in last couple of years, in this regard my visit to Zimbabwe has been very effective and memorable.”

The Chief Executive was also delighted to share the features of the landmark deal signed by Lahore Qalandars and Zimbabwe Cricket, under which now the new center of Zimbabwe Cricket will be Qalandars High Performance Center Lahore. According to the agreement, 8 talented players who performed prominently in the successful Players Development Program held recently in Zimbabwe will reach Qalandar's High Performance Center in Lahore next month. The training of these players will be our responsibility now.
