Lahore, 2 March 2020:

Lahore Qalandars will be hoping for a change of fortune when they take on defending champions Quetta Gladiators in the 16th match of the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020 under Gaddafi Stadium lights on Tuesday.

Qalandars are winless from three matches to date with their six of the remaining seven fixtures now on home turf and in front of their fans. Their only league match outside Lahore will be against Karachi Kings when they will travel to the National Stadium for the 12 March match, which will be their sixth game.

Qalandars’ losing streak had started at the Gaddafi Stadium on 21 February when they lost to Multan Sultans by five wickets, which was followed by a one-wicket loss against Islamabad United two days later at the home of Pakistan cricket. In Rawalpindi on 28 February, they ended up on the losing side when Peshawar Zalmi won a 12-over-a-side fixture by 16 runs.

This has left Qalandars languishing at the bottom of the six-team points table, with their nearest rivals Karachi Kings sitting on four points with two wins. The top four sides after 30 league matches will progress to the three play-offs, followed by the 22 March final which will be played at the Gaddafi Stadium.

In contrast, Gladiators are occupying second place with six points from five matches. Their wins have been against Islamabad United (twice, by three and five wickets respectively) and Karachi Kings (by five wickets), while they have suffered defeats against Peshawar Zalmi (by six wickets) and Multan Sultans (by 30 runs).

Head to head, Gladiators lead Qalandars 5-3. The only time Gladiators won both their league fixtures against Qalandars was in 2017; otherwise the sides have shared spoils.

Qalandars coach Aaqib Javed, looking forward to the upcoming matches, said: “We have lost three games because the other sides were better than us at key moments of those matches. Let’s not forget we lost by one-wicket to Islamabad United and a reduced-overs match against Peshawar Zalmi.

“We have the experience and class in our ranks, and all we need is one strong performance to turn things around. I think the match against Quetta Gladiators provides us that opportunity to regain the confidence, inject some momentum and put our campaign back on track.

“Irrespective of whether you have won all matches or none, at this level there will always be pressure. The game is all about handling that pressure and performing when the chips are down. The stakes are high and so is the expectation level, so we need to remain positive and don’t forget the basics.

“I am hoping our top-order will soon start firing so that our bowlers have the runs to defend, it’s as simple as that.”

Gladiators’ captain Sarfaraz Ahmed said: “It is good to have collected three wins from five matches, but the critical and crucial phase for us starts now. We now need to win as many matches at the backend of the league matches as possible to secure a place in the top-four.

“We have a pretty settled side but I still feel we have a little inexperienced though a talented bowling attack as compared to last year. We have a number of options in that department, so it is also a good headache to have.

“Qalandars is a good side and I will not read too much into their three loses to date. We need to be at the top of our game on Tuesday to overcome them as we have repeatedly seen one over here and there can change a match. That’s the beauty and cruelness of this T20 format.

“No doubt majority of the spectators will be behind Qalandars and rightly so, because they are the home side. But, we will be playing our first match at the Gaddafi Stadium as reigning champions, so we will also have the crowd support. In Pakistan, we have a knowledgeable crowd who always appreciate good cricket, irrespective of who is playing.”

Rumours are Shaheen might not be playing today. So LQ probably will be without Shaheen and Rauf both today.

I read a tweet from an unverified journalist that Shaheen isn't playing due to an injury.

That's like "dus nakammoun ka aklota kamaao putt" getting sick and not going to work. Don't know how they do it, but season after season Qalandards continue to exceed expectations when it comes to disappointing their fans.

Just read that he got hit by a bouncer in nets.

Looks like Shaheen has recovered.

Never even heard of sohail akhtar before last year how is he captain of Lahore. Definitely have to give it to Fakhar or Hafeez

Is Salman Irshad playing just because he's from Kashmir? I don't see anything special in him.

I think of the sake of being responsible they may go in shell and lose their only strength which was quick score in PowerPlay, strange but expected form LQ.

Feel sad for LQ.... they have just gone from bad to worse because of Aaquib Javed. They had the best franchise logo and color scheme (first season), and every season they have only deteriorated. This might be the depth of their decline having a nobody like Sohail Akhtar with his fat belly as captain

Fakhar needs to prove that he is not one trick pony. He needs to develop his game as he has been miserbaly found out by opposition teams. Needs to add variety and stop behaving like a gully bully.

He is still not middling the bowl but he is gaining back some confidence

Their management in the first session was pretty good. It was Paddy Upton who has won IPL and worked in big teams but they wanted to give 'chances' to 'local' coaches. Aqib isn't that bad tbh. The problem is withe the owners. When your team's media manager is an owner of the team then you should know how professional the team is.

In my opinion, he needs to get his feet moving in order increase the chances of bat meeting the ball sweetly or holding the shape. I believe, hand eye coordination is a gift and he seems to have that. He should just back his ability albeit just get his feet going a little bit more to meet ball more perfectly.

I still don't understand why Lahore is named Lahore Qalandars. There are hardly any Qalandars in Lahore except for in Daata Darbar. Qalandar is a Sindhi thing. Even Lahore Paindoos would have been a better name.

CT17 was more like a curse for Pakistan to be honest. It made our players arrogant and gave us a goof like Fakhar.

Why is the LQ captain not batting himself ahead of this joke Ben Dunk?

Lahore Lions sound a lot better, ya Lahore Legends, and this chnge in name may change their fortunes as well.

Ben Dunk looks like a security guard who has been asked to play a charity game with professional cricketers

Dunk is like a country mile away from Australian team and yet he's playing in PSL. He failed in BBL as well.

Both batsmen without helmet with their helmets on crease:moyo2

I think its a much better use of Ben Dunk as he has opened mostly in white ball cricket.

Sohail Akhtar. Does he even play cricket outside PSL? He looks like a halwai.

LQ imploding again

Competition has been too tough for them from the first season itself. They rely on individuals while other teams have individuals along with a solid team

kaya catch practice krwai hafeez bhai, I think he thought there was no fielder there, but LQ walun and aqal se kam lena, big no

Hafeez, cutting the shot when there is a fielder there at slip. Unbelievable.

I dont remember any team showing as much loyalty to their coach in history of T20 cricket as LQ has shown to Aqib Javed.

Been supporting Arsenal for 2 decades and now Lahore as family and myself are from there. Why do I do this to myself *** :))

Other teams no. 5
KK: Walton/Imad
IU: Ingram
PZ: Malik
QG: Sarfraz
MS: Rossouw

LQs: Samit Patel.

I bet Lahore Lions team would've done better than Lahore Qalandars.

Such shame. From Lahore Lions (Faysal Bank T20 Giants) to this.

LQ reminds me of Misbah's Pakistan team during 2013 onwards

Yea. Even Islamabad United booted out Dean Jones (Most Successful PSL Coach) for Misbah.

How can Lahore be called a team of stars. Even local lahore playing 11 would be better than them. Lahoris misery is not ending, then they expect lahore crowd to come and support them. 🤦*♂️🤦*♂️🤦*♂️ Terrible team selection, samit ahead of captain.

Although i do think this is spin pitch and we playing 4 pacers.😂

Samit Patel and Prassana are spinners.

I am seeing a ganja player and mediocre player in PSL, which is a shame for the lahore franchise as they are v expensive franchise.

Two international flops at the crease and people think the standard of PSL is good.

Fakhar Zaman, CA Lynn, Mohammad Hafeez, BR Dunk†, Sohail Akhtar*, Muhammad Faizan, SR Patel, S Prasanna, Dilbar Hussain, Salman Irshad, Shaheen Shah Afridi

Other than Shaheen this is a horrific and mind numbingly boring line up.

Such a shame.
