How Lalit Modi's single brain child changed Indian sports

Today while watching the Indian Super League, it made me realize how the IPL, Lalit Modi's brain child, revolutionized Indian sports. His brain child not only made India Cricket richer and dominate World Cricket, but it also caused the introduction of Hockey Premier League, Pro Kabbadi and Indian Super League. Kabbadi, a kind of sport that one would find it boring, but the indians changed the whole concept of it and made it more entertaining. While ex-Chelsea stars like Nicolas Anelka are playing in Indian Super League.

And yet after all that, Pakistan is still only day dreaming of having Pakistan Super League(cricket)

Huge population and large appetite for sports + Sponsors who can churn out millions without blinking an eye + Jingoistic population who encourage anything and everything Indian

Bingo!

All it tells me is that people in the subcontinent don't have access to top level football. Why would anyone pay to watch has beens like Anelka if they lived outside of India? Of course for Indians themselves it's perfectly understandable as it is their own domestic league. But if you aren't an Indian national it wouldn't be of much interest.

But they just got smashed in England, I wouldn't call that dominance.

No team can dominate forever. India did quite well post-IPL by their standards, that should be good enough. It has been a steep fall, but last 7 years have been very good overall.

India have been decent since I can remember. They always have lots good batsman and some brilliant ones and contrary to popular opinion, I have always believed that their fast bowlers are very talented but have always lacked belief. Take for example Srinath- good height, pace and decent movement but for the most of his career lacked belief.

Who cares?

Waiting for the brainchild who can bin the IPL - that will do the trick.

I wouldn't credit him for originality because he himself just stole the idea from ICL and created the IPL model through inspirations from other sports leagues. What i would credit him is for his relentless work to get things done in a very small span of time. The guy had ridiculous efficiency rate. Apart from IPL as well, he just did a lot of work to get millions of dollars worth deals for BCCI be it kit sponsorship from Nike, tv rights etc, he is the guy who totally revamped BCCI into the dominant force it has become today. Lalit Modi got everyone running right, left and centre. He had an incredible vision and sky high dreams. And sure he was corrupt as hell too, ultimately his over smartness got the better of him.

As for other leagues, IPL has been an inspiration but i would thank Star Sports for showing faith in other sports and backing them.

Though tough to imagine, back in the day, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) lived in a cluttered two BHK apartment. Its South Mumbai address might have impressed those who corresponded with it, but not the postman who climbed those dark, dingy stairs leading to the file-filled rooms with peeling walls.

Typical of those wily kinds with old money, they were low-key and conservative. And then Lalit Modi came along. He got the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well as the International Management Group and subsequently, more worrying acronyms — ED, CBI — would follow. But let’s not get ahead of ourselves in this story of how cricket couldn’t handle money and fame.

Modi always had a knack of pulling off surprises, like he did late on Thursday when he announced on Twitter about a “new beginning” with former Miss World 1994 Sushmita Sen. The post also had a suggestive ‘better half’ hashtag. Within minutes he would add a twist to his viral tweet. “Just for clarity. Not married – just dating each other. That too will happen one day,” was to be a quick rejoinder. With Modi there is never ever a dull moment.

The early Modi days in the BCCI were interesting times. The old-timers hated him. He was seen as an upstart. His Twenty20 venture bred mistrust. The maidan cricketers-turned-administrators in safari suits were slowly getting replaced by Armani-clad MBAs. The World Cup veterans of 1987 and 1996 — the ageing administrators who had greased palms, sought countless permissions from governments, worked on shoestring budgets from cubby holes to successfully host cricket’s biggest tournament — were seen as misfits in Modi’s project, IPL season one. They sulked silently. When they spoke, they bad-mouthed Modi. But the whispers would die soon as the IPL brought money, serious money. Franchise teams got sold for $725 million, and the television deal was worth $1 billion.

Not far from its old modest abode, the BCCI was now housed in a sprawling building next to the Wankhede Stadium, called Cricket Centre. When IPL stakeholders would meet Modi at the new headquarters, Bentleys, Mercedes and Rolls Royces sat in the parking area. The team owners had demands, some old, some new. While asking for passes for their celebrity friends and parking tickets for their VIP friends, they would casually inquire if the stadium had a helipad. Many would fly in from SoBo and be air-dropped at the training ground at the D.Y. Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai to see the Rajasthan Royals win IPL 1.

Cricket’s good old political takeover, which seemed unshakably permanent for eternity and beyond, was now threatened by a corporate coup. Power equations, rules, culture and even the BCCI constitution — nothing was untouched by change. Cricket was in a tearing hurry, thanks to the Twenty20 format. The aesthetics of the game were sacrificed on the field. In the BCCI’s corridors, due diligence and institutional ethics were alien words. There was no time to sit and brood. It was time to make quick millions, virtually everyday. Even Modi-baiters were enjoying the new perks. They had plush offices and revised travel allowance/ dearness allowance at the end of business-class travel. That’s when everybody shut their mouths and, sadly for cricket, their eyes too.

The enfant terrible Modi was now the BCCI’s blue-eyed boy. It didn’t check his homework or his pocket money. Maybe he was too well connected to be questioned. That stingy spender, the BCCI, was now a stinking-rich squanderer. It was one big roaring party. Modi invited his friends and family in. There was no one stopping them at the gate, as everyone was part of the party. Old hand N. Srinivasan helped himself to one franchise, of course after the BCCI had collectively erased those all-important three words — conflict of interest. Now, everyone was connected to someone in the incestuous chain. Any indiscretion could be brushed under the carpet by putting in a word or by making a phone call to an uncle, father or father-in-law. And it is also why the Rajasthan Royals team is still part of the IPL, despite the taint on its players and owners. The Chennai Super Kings had an insider-trader in the dugout but still the franchise wasn’t ejected. The rulebook is still ruthless, but the rulers aren’t non-partisan.

BCCI insiders say that the reason the Modi chapter ended was because he became too brash and stepped on too many toes. There are those who say that he was outfoxed by the more ambitious and masterful vote-manager Srinivasan, combined with the fading power of his mentor, Sharad Pawar. Hardly anyone speaks about his financial misdeeds. This, despite the fact that a disciplinary committee concluded that Modi rigged bids, arm-twisted certain franchises, signed a scam television contract and favoured his stepson-in-law in an internet deal.

Now consider this — Modi did all this while he was being watched by a high-profile governing council, plus the BCCI’s executive. Not to miss the fact that the governing council had the country’s best legal brains, top politicians and legends of the game. None spotted anything amiss while Modi was minting millions. Clearly, the checks and balances were either not there or were not effective. Later, even the Supreme Court, at the end of the IPL corruption case hearing, had appointed a committee to suggest structural changes and propose election reforms for the BCCI.

Despite the controversy, the IPL remains cricket’s most lucrative brand. And there are many, like the BCCI-contracted commentator Ravi Shastri, who still see Modi as Moses. Based in London, the flamboyant cricket administrator would regularly receive invitations from universities and business schools to give lectures. Once during a casual meeting with us journalists on the tour of England, the one-time IPL chief spoke about enjoying his days away from cricket, watching top European football games from VIP boxes as a guest.

Not sure if belonged to cricket section as article deals with Lalit modi's personal life.
Never a dull moment with this guy though.

Never knew that Sushmita Sen of all people is a gold digger!

I’m certain if she wanted she could had found richer people, over here I just want to say Love is blind.
Even though I don't know her personally but one thing I'd say this is not love, surely.

As for her finding richer people than Lalit Modi, well I think boat has already sailed for that. She is what close to 50 now, if not 50 already.

Also Lalit Modi is still rich, very rich, in fact.

'KKR was his eventual pick' - Lalit Modi reveals IPL franchise Shah Rukh Khan wanted before KKR

The first chairman and league commissioner of the IPL (Indian Premier League), Lalit Modi, recently came forward and revealed the team that Bollywood superstar Shah Rukh Khan wanted to own in the IPL before he finally opted with Kolkata Knight Riders.

Modi said that SRK wanted to own Mumbai Indians before KKR, adding that he had to go for the Kolkata-based team as Mumbai Indians was acquired by Reliance Industries Ltd. Modi also talked about how Shah Rukh Khan owning a team in the IPL helped the tournament and also narrated the tale of convincing the Bollywood superstar to join the cricket arena by owning an IPL team. Modi further revealed the idea behind creating, reckoning that Bollywood and cricket are the two things that Indians have always been crazy about.

Setback For Ex-IPL Chairman On Demand Of Rs 10.65 Crore Penalty From BCCI

The Bombay High Court has imposed a cost of Rs 1 lakh on former cricket administrator Lalit Modi and dismissed his petition seeking an order to Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to pay penalty of Rs 10.65 crore imposed on him by the ED for violating Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). A division bench of Justices M S Sonak and Jitendra Jain, in its order of Thursday, said the petition was "frivolous and wholly misconceived" as the adjudication authority under the FEMA has imposed the penalty on Modi.

Modi in his plea said he was appointed as BCCI vice president, during which period he was also chairman of Indian Premier League governing body, a subcommittee of the BCCI.

The plea claimed the BCCI is supposed to indemnify him as per bylaws.

The HC bench, however, referred to a Supreme Court judgment of 2005 which said the BCCI does not fall under the definition of 'State' as defined under Article 12 of the Constitution of India.

Despite clear orders from the apex court, Modi has filed this petition in 2018, the HC bench noted.

"In matters of alleged indemnification of the petitioner (Modi) in the context of penalties imposed upon the petitioner by the ED, there is no question of discharge of any public function, and therefore, for this purpose, no writ could be issued to the BCCI," HC said.

Lalit Modi's Plea Seeking BCCI To Pay ED Penalty Dismissed By Supreme Court

Supreme Court on Monday junked a plea filed by former cricket administrator Lalit Modi seeking an order to the BCCI to pay a penalty of Rs 10.65 crore imposed on him by the ED for violating the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA). A bench of Justices P S Narasimha and R Mahadevan, however, said Modi will be entitled to avail civil remedies as available according to law. The Bombay High Court on December 19 last year had imposed a cost of Rs 1 lakh on Modi while dismissing his petition seeking an order to the BCCI to pay a penalty of Rs 10.65 crore imposed on him by the Enforcement Directorate for violating FEMA.

The high court had said the petition was "frivolous and wholly misconceived" as the adjudication authority under FEMA has imposed the penalty on Modi.

Modi, in his plea, said he was appointed as vice president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India, during which period he was also the chairman of the Indian Premier League governing body, a subcommittee of the BCCI.

The plea claimed that the BCCI is supposed to indemnify him as per the bylaws.

The HC bench, however, referred to a Supreme Court judgment of 2005, which said the BCCI does not fall under the definition of a 'state' as defined under Article 12 of the Constitution.

Despite clear orders from the apex court, Modi filed this petition in 2018, the HC bench noted.

"In matters of alleged indemnification of the petitioner (Modi) in the context of penalties imposed upon the petitioner by the ED, there is no question of discharge of any public function, and therefore, for this purpose, no writ could be issued to the BCCI," the HC had said.

"In any event, the reliefs are wholly misconceived. This petition is frivolous, and accordingly, we dismiss this petition," the court had said and directed Modi to pay a sum of Rs 1 lakh to the Tata Memorial Hospital within four weeks.
