MUMBAI: The coronavirus pandemic, it seems, is not preventing cricket boards around the world to announce their leagues. On a day when the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) organisers announced the dates of the next edition of their tournament, in far-off Sri Lanka, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) unveiled their ambitious T20 project — the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League.

In a clear clash of dates with CPL, which is supposed to begin from August 18 and end on September 10, the first edition of the Lanka Premier League will be held from August 28 to September 20, and will involve 23 matches which will be played across four venues. It clearly means that the players participating in these leagues will have to make a choice between either of the leagues.

The approval for the tournament came at an SLC Executive Committee on Monday.

Five teams, named after the cities of Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna will participate in the tournament, with 70 international players and 10 high-profile coaches having confirmed their availability.
The matches will be played at the Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium and Suriyawewa Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium.

Wonder if any Pakistani players will play in this?

Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan and New Zealand opener Martin Guptill are both interested in being a part of the Lanka Premier League (LPL).

A report in the Sri Lankan newspaper Daily News said that Pathan and Guptill are among 143 international players in the list for the tournament that will begin next month.

"There are about 143 overseas players in the list who are very keen to play in this tournament and now it is up to the respective franchises to select these cricketers," a high ranking official at Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) told Daily News.

"We have also asked the local clubs to nominate two players for this event and so there would be a total of 48 top domestic players from the 24 Premier Clubs who would be eligible to represent the four franchises.

"In addition, we have a total 80 national players who are currently contracted with SLC and they will also be strong contenders to make it to the final squad.

"Some of the Premier Clubs have also named young promising players in the Under-23 and Under-19 category but altogether it is up to the four franchises to make a final decision in picking their squad."

The tournament, which will consist of 23 matches, will be played in four stadiums: R. Premadasa Stadium, Dambulla Stadium, Pallekele Stadium and Mahinda Rajapaksa Stadium in Hambantota.

Franchise teams from the cities of Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna will partake in the league.

SLC, which had conceived the league in 2018, was earlier optimistic of conducting the event from August 8 to 22, pending government's decision to open the country's border for foreign arrivals.

COLOMBO: A total of 93 international cricketers, including England's World Cup-winning pacer Liam Plunkett and New Zealand seamer Tim Southee, have been listed for the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) beginning on August 28.

Veteran Pakistan all-rounder Mohammad Hafeez and West Indies opener Dwayne Smith are also part of the list, according to a report in 'Ceylon Today'.

The report also said that Dubai-based sports broadcasting company, Innovative Production Group (IPG), has been awarded "total rights" of the LPL for five years.

"IPG has total rights over ground, production, franchises and TV rights of the tournament where they pay $2 million annually for the said rights," the report said.

"...it's now up to IPG and franchises to finalise their players via negotiations with the players, or any other suitable method, and SLC will not be further involved in the matter."

The report also stated that "a total of 30 international cricketers (six each per franchise) and five coaches will be selected for the league". In addition, a pool of 130 local players will be available to the franchises to select from.

"A Sri Lankan icon player would get a salary cap of $60,000, while a top cricketer would be in the range of $50,000 to 40,000. Others would fit into the $40,000 to 30,000 and $20,000 to 10,000 ranges, depending on their stature.

"International players are expected to be in the $10,000 to 60,000 range."

Sri Lanka will become the second nation to host a multi-team T20 league as the country will stage the Lanka Premier League. The tournament will kick off on August 28. The SLC is yet to come up with the fixtures of the league but it has been confirmed that it will end on September 20.

A total of five teams - Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna - will be participating in the tournament. Since it's a franchise-based tournament, every state will have some unique name to attract the fans.

The SLC is yet to confirm it, but the names of franchises have gained much popularity. As per a report in the Sunday Times, the teams' names are Colombo Super Kings, Galle Lions, Kandy Royals, Jaffna Sunrisers and Dambulla Capitals. All the five names are inspired by the names of IPL franchises.

Colombo's team name has been inspired by Chennai Super Kings while Galle have taken a cue from Gujarat Lions, who were part of IPL 2016 and 2017. The names of Kandy, Jaffna and Dambulla are inspired by IPL franchises Rajasthan Royals, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Delhi Capitals. It remains to be seen how the IPL franchises will react to these names.

As per a report, a total of 70 cricketers have been listed for the tournament. The list includes Liam Plunkett, Dwayne Smith, Tim Southee and others. The draft is likely to take place soon.

Multiple reports had also suggested that Irfan Pathan was among the players who were listed for Lanka Premier League but he denied the rumours and revealed that he hasn't confirmed availability for any league. "I wish to play T20 Leagues around the world in future, but at this stage I haven't confirmed my availability in any Leagues," he had written on Twitter.

With LPL running till September 20, Sri Lanka's Lasith Malinga (

What is this Sri Lankan Poverty League ? Even GT20 Canada played some players closed to 300K and other players closed to 100K. Only the local Canadian players were paid peanuts. Stupid idea to play during IPL season. This is kind of whack. 6 International players are good because no one wants to watch these C grade Sri Lankan players. SLPL the first season was hard to watch even with Mahela, Sangakara and Dilshan. This is going to be a nightmare.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has postponed the inaugural edition of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) due to unavailability of top foreign players who would have had to undergo 14-day compulsory quarantine owing to rising cases of Covid-19 in the country.

The T20 League was scheduled to start on August 28, subject to approval from the government and Ministry of health but the 14-day compulsory quarantine period turned out to be an issue with regards to foreign players.

“We had a discussion with the health authorities and the 14-day quarantine period for anyone entering the country is compulsory. So, it’s difficult to play the tournament at the end of August,” SLC President Shammi Silva told NewsWire. “We will play the tournament in mid-November after IPL,”

Silva’s information indicated that they are looking at roping in the best T20 freelancers. The Indian Premier League (IPL) is slated to be held in UAE from September 19 to November 10. A total of 23 matches were scheduled in LPL which was supposed to end on September 20.

It will be played at four international venues of R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Rangiri Dambulu International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium and Suriyawewa Mahinda Rajapakse International Cricket Stadium.

Hastily arranged - and now a reputation problem already!

What's up with SLPL? Most Test nations have T20 leagues. Even Afghanistan have one.

I want LPL to happen in near future. Watched SLPL way back in 2012.

KARACHI: A team from Pakistan is likely to be a part of the Sri Lanka Premier League. The dialogue has reached its finals stages and an announcement is expected in the near future. According to details, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has been attempting to start a league of its own however the dates have been constantly changing due to the ongoing coronavirus epidemic.

The tournament will include Dambulla Hawks, Galle Dolphins, Jaffna Cobras, Colombo Lions and Kandy Tuskers. A total of 23 matches will be played where each team is likely to play a minimum of eight matches and a maximum of 10 matches. According to sources, a team from Pakistan might soon be added to the league with its owner rumored to have a considerable amount of cricketing knowledge.

The event will be held in a window between November and December of the current year. The management has added big names such as Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Malik and Mohammad Hafeez in the initial list of icon cricketers.

International players such as AB De Villiers, Eoin Morgan, Yuvraj Singh, Sunil Narine, Lasith Malinga, Angelo Matthews, Irfan Pathan, Chris Gayle, Alex Hales, Shane Watson and Shakibal Hasan could also be part of the tournament. A total of 30 international cricketers are expected to participate in the league. The inclusion of Indian players is subjected to the issuance of NOC’s by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

It should be noted that the SLC has granted franchise ownership rights, media broadcasting rights and ground sponsorship rights to a Dubai-based company IPG for five years which were sold at the cost of $11 million. The SLC will receive $1.9 million annually for the first two years while a 10 per cent increase will be made for the next three years. The SLC will have to look after the management of the grounds and umpires while all other activities would be handled by the company.

190 overseas players to fight for 30 spots in LPL auction

A total of 190 overseas players will fight for 30 places in the five teams that will participate in the Lanka Premier League (LPL); the T20 tournament scheduled to take place at four international venues from 14 November to 8 December.

While Sri Lanka Cricket is awaiting clearance from the Health Ministry for the tour to Sri Lanka by the Bangladesh national and Development teams as well as the LPL due to COVID-19, work has been going on in the meantime to make LPL a reality.

“We are basically almost in the process of signing the agreement with the event holder IPG (Innovative Production Group). We shared the draft with the event holder and they have basically said that they can share the names of the franchise owners by 7 September,” said Sri Lanka Cricket CEO Ashley de Silva.

“We have also got all the names of the players who would be available which we have shared with the event holder and finalised the itinerary. Almost 70-80 percent of the work is being done,” he said.

“There are about 190 overseas players who have shown interest to play in the LPL. A lot of them are high profile players. Out of 190 only 30 will get picked. By 7 September we will share the names of the franchise owners after that hopefully by the end of September they will go for the auction of players,” De Silva added.

Each team is entitled to six overseas players in a squad of 16 but only a maximum of four can play at any given time. The five teams named after the cities of Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna will play a total of 23 matches at four international venues in Sri Lanka – the R Premadasa International Cricket Stadium, Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium and Suriyawewa Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium.

De Silva said the coaches for the five teams has not yet been finalised. “Those who are available we have shared with the event holder. They will finalise it and let us know.” IPG, a company based in Dubai has secured the event sponsorship rights of the LPL for the next five years. The sponsorship is expected to enrich the SLC coffers by over US$10 million over the next five years.

Galle Gladiators, the first team of Sri Lanka’s upcoming franchise based T20 tournament, Lanka Premier League (LPL), will be launched in Pakistan today.

The franchise will be signed and launched by the Pakistan-based company which owns it.
The Cricket Tournament will be held from November to December 2020.

Dubai based sports broadcasting company, Innovative Production Group (IPG), has been awarded ‘total rights’ for Sri Lanka’s upcoming franchise based T20 tournament, Lanka Premier League. (Newswire)

Another T20 league kicking off. Where is the time/space in the calendar? How will the international schedule be squeezed in with all these T20 leagues?

Now every single board has a T20 league. Looks like there is no more guessing which format has the most fans. Also where the boards think $$$ can be made.

A board like SLC seems to have absolutely no interest in test cricket. Where does this leave test cricket? Are boards like SLC, WI, BD and to a lesser extent, PCB, CSA and NZC reluctant hosts of test cricket?

Shahid Afridi still plays? Hasn't he retired??

From what we understand, Salman Iqbal (Karachi Kings) is also interested in purchasing one of the franchises in this tournament.

not sure how to react to this, so the galle team will act as a feeder team for quetta? im guessing they will get dibs on any exciting young local players?

also i thought the psl franchises were supposedly fiscally stressed, doesnt seem to add up if they investing in even more teams.

Former Pakistan skippers Shahid Afridi and Sarfaraz Ahmed will play in the upcoming Lankan Premier League for Galle Gladiators, a team bought by the owner of Pakistan Super League franchise Quetta Gladiators.

The announcement of the inclusion of Afridi and Sarfaraz in the franchise was made by Nadeem Omar, who owns Quetta Gladiators, during a reception held here on Wednesday to unveil the Galle Gladiators outfit.

Afridi was named the icon player of the Galle Gladiators and the former allrounder took to twitter to thank Omar.

“Proud to be the icon player for Galle Gladiators. I want to thank Nadeem Omar bhai and also congratulate him for being the first franchise owner from Pakistan in the #LPL. I’ll be seeing you all in,” tweeted the 40-year-old, who last played a T20 event for Multan Sultans in the PSL this year.

The inaugural event is scheduled to be held from November 14 to December 6 and the Sri Lankan board has already sold all rights of its league including broadcasting and media rights.

Five teams representing five cities will take part in the Lanka Premier League but with the Pakistan Cricket Board also announcing that it would hold its remaining four PSL matches between November 14 and 17, many Pakistani players might be unable to attend the initial part of the event.

The Sri Lankan board is counting a lot on the premier league to resume full time cricket activities at home after cancellation of five international commitments due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sri Lanka has comparatively seen only 3000 cases of the virus since March with around 24 deaths which is a low number compared to the cases in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh.

Omar said the purpose of buying stakes in the Galle team was to help promote the Lanka league and also because of the old friendly ties between Pakistan and Sri Lankan cricket.

The tournament will be played at three international venues -- Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium and Suriyawewa Mahinda Rajapakse International Cricket Stadium.

Five teams will compete in 23 matches over a 15-day period.

To me, the name SLPL sounds better than LPL.

Want Sri Lanka to arrange LPL after PSL final as I want all the overseas players of LPL involved from the onset.

Also will the national players of Pakistan be available for LPL ?

With the inaugural Lanka Premier League scheduled to be held in November, Sri Lanka Cricket is now planning to launch a T10 tournament in December. According to a report in Daily News, the SLC executive committee had already given a go ahead to the event.

“At a meeting held at the Sri Lanka Cricket headquarters yesterday, the executive committee unanimously approved to conduct the inaugural T-10 cricket tournament in December this year,” the report said on Wednesday. “After the conclusion of the Lanka Premier League (LPL) in November, all players who participate will be free without any further engagement and as a result, SLC opted to use this time frame to give these players a further opportunity to get into action, which will be conducive for their future tours.”

Eight teams comprising six foreign players each will compete in the tournament in two venues. “The names of teams and the venues are yet to be finalised,” the report said. “SLC has decided to have six overseas players in a squad, and the tournament will be conducted on par with International T20 standards. This is going to be the second event after the LPL.”

Five teams representing five cities will compete in 23 matches in the Lanka Premier League which is scheduled to be held from November 14 to December 6 at three international venues - Rangiri Dambulla International Cricket Stadium, Pallekele International Cricket Stadium and Suriyawewa Mahinda Rajapakse International Cricket Stadium.

Sri Lanka's cricket board will auction some 150 players next month, including international stars, for the five teams that will make up the virus-delayed premier league, officials said Friday. The 23-match Lanka Premier League (LPL), originally due in August, will now be played from November 14 to December 6, with matches in Dambulla, Kandy and Hambantota.

"The player auction of the LPL will be held on October 1," the board said in a statement.

Five teams named after the Sri Lankan cities of Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna, will take part.

Sri Lanka Cricket said 30 foreigners including Chris Gayle, Darren Sammy, Darren Bravo, Shahid Afridi and Shakib Al Hasan will play in the tournament.

"Each franchise can buy up to six international players," the board said.

The five teams will consist of 30 international cricketers and 65 local players.

The LPL was due to start on August 28 but was postponed after health authorities insisted on lengthy quarantines for foreign players.

International cricket came to a halt in Sri Lanka on March 13. The visiting England team pulled out on the second day of a practice match ahead of their two-Test series as the coronavirus pandemic spread.

Since then, South Africa and Bangladesh have cancelled scheduled tours of Sri Lanka.

https://sports.ndtv.com/cricket/lan...er-auction-to-take-place-on-october-1-2294075

According to media reports regarding LPL auction:

Shahid Afridi is among the most expensive foreign players with base price of $60,000.

Shoaib Malik is in the $50,000 price category

Mohammad Amir, Mohammad Hafeez, and Wahab Riaz have a base price of $40,000

Other Pakistan players available:

Sarfaraz Ahmed,
Kamran Akmal,
Sharjeel Khan,
Mohammad Irfan,
Yasir Shah,
Imam-ul-Haq,
Haris Sohail,
Mohammad Sami,
Umar Gul,
Mohammad Abbas,
Sohail Tanvir,
Junaid Khan,
Imad Wasim,
Anwar Ali,
Mohammad Nawaz,
Hussain Talat,
Asif Ali,
Iftikhar Ahmed,
Ruman Raees.

So KKR's feeder team is Trinidad like that Quetta's feeder team is Galle ?

T10 over is pathetic and makes the tournament look like a circus. It is good that LPL will have 6 overseas cricketers considering no will watch 7 SL domestic bowlers during this day and age. Carribean players will add some spice. Maybe have few Australia, South African and some English and NZ players and this can be a global tournament. If Canada can have a T20 league so can Sri Lanka.

Karachi: The Sri Lanka Cricket have shortlisted 150 players for their upcoming first edition of the Lanka Premier League, scheduled from November 14 to December 6 at their backyard.

Not a single deserving youngster in this lineup of Pakistani players to go in the auction.

This is perhaps an indication that how poorly managed and advertised the younger generation are in Pakistan in general really.

QAE trophy is clashing with this, it is fully understandable if young pacers and batsmen aren’t available.

I don't mind. I'd rather have our young players toiling in first class cricket at home rather than chasing cash in a low quality t20 league.

QAE trophy is clashing with this, it is fully understandable if young pacers and batsmen aren’t available.

I don't mind. I'd rather have our young players toiling in first class cricket at home rather than chasing cash in a low quality t20 league.
In that case send all the FTB's and over 30's there so the youngsters get max exposure in domestic FC and T20 structure.

Sri Lanka Premier League likely to be postponed to January 2021

LAHORE: The Lanka Premier League (LPL) could face another delay with the primary reason being the 14-day quarantine period mandated by the government. The LPL was scheduled to be played from November 14 to December 6. A short while after the announcement, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced the resumption of the remaining Pakistan Super League (PSL) 5 matches from November 14 to 17. The PSL’s Quetta Gladiators franchise will also take part in the LPL as Galle Gladiators. According to reports, the Sri Lankan government’s insistence on a mandatory 14-day quarantine period has left the timely start of the league in danger. Bangladesh’s tour of Sri Lanka is also not confirmed yet due to the same issue.

A busy schedule will not allow international cricketers to be in isolation for two weeks in the month of November. Pakistan’s former all-rounder Shahid Afridi will be representing the Multan Sultans franchise in the PSL. If the legendary all-rounder goes into a 14-day quarantine after the PSL matches, he will not be able to play any matches in the LPL. These issues could mean that the dates of the LPL will change in the near future. The tournament’s draft will take place through video link on October 1.

Meanwhile, the T10 League was originally scheduled to be played in Abu Dhabi from November 18 to 28. However, the shift in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to the UAE has forced the organisers of the T10 League to make some changes, which is why it is likely to be postponed till January 2021. The IPL is scheduled to end on November 10, just eight days before the T10 League was originally scheduled to begin. Fan interest would have been hard to maintain just days after a huge event such as the IPL which is why the decision was made to postpone the league. An official announcement in this regard will be made soon. The Pakistan Super League (PSL) franchise Lahore Qalandars will take part in the T10 League as Qalandars.

Any update on LPL ? Full player list of the draft slated for Oct 1 ?

No Bangladesh players, including star all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan, will feature in the upcoming Lanka Premier League (LPL) in Sri Lanka, in what looks to be a fallout of the eventual postponement of the Test series between the two nations over COVID-19 regulations. After postponement of Bangladesh tour of Sri Lanka, now Bangladesh Cricket Board has declared that no Bangladesh cricketer will participate in the Lankan Premier League.

According to Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hasan, be it Shakib or anyone else, NOC (No Objection Certificate, effectively a permit) to play will not be granted to anyone.

“I don’t see any possibility. And at the same time, we also are going to host domestic cricket,” Nazmul Hassan said replying a question regarding Shakib’s participation in LPL. ”I don’t think there is any possibility to see Bangladeshi cricketers taking part in the LPL, because at that point of time we will have domestic cricket and they will be engaged here,”

Shakib is currently serving a ban imposed by the ICC due to failing to report corrupt approaches made to him. However, his ban will come to the end in October. The LPL 2020 is scheduled for 14 November to 6 December 2020.

The new franchise-based league was originally scheduled to be held in late August was rescheduled for November 14 to December 6. But as reported by InsideSport earlier is all set to be postponed once again due to the mandatory 14-day quarantine, which forced postponement of Bangladesh tour of Sri Lanka.

About 150 players was listed by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) for the auction including Chris Gayle, Daren Sammy, Darren Bravo, Shahid Afridi, Colin Munro, Munaf Patel and Ravi Boapara along with Shakib, who was banned by ICC last year in October after he failed to report corrupt approaches on three occasions, will be able to return back to cricket from October 29 as his ban is set to come to an end on October 28.

It was reported that apart from Shakib, a few other Bangladesh cricketers who were expected to under the hammer were Mushfiqur Rahim, Mahmudullah Riyad, Mustafizur Rahman, Sabbir Rahman and Mohammad Saifuddin.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka boards were forced to postpone a three-match Test series which was scheduled to take place from October 24. As per the regulation of the Sri Lanka government, everyone entering Sri Lanka needs to maintain a 14-day quarantine. BCB had asked their counterparts Sri Lanka Cricket to trim this period to seven days, but Sri Lanka’s government refused it.

BCB said it’s not possible for them to continue with this tour maintaining the health guidelines provided by the Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC). While Sri Lanka tour is postponed, BCB is eying to host domestic cricket from mid-October. Shakib might resume his career with domestic event once his ban is over on October 28th

30th September, 2020

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) decided to readjust the commencement date of the ‘Lanka Premier League’ (LPL) in order to ensure that participating players have adequate time to meet ‘Quarantine Requirements,’ as per the Government’s health regulations.

Accordingly, the commencement of the LPL, which was scheduled to start on the 14th of November 2020 will be shifted to 21st November 2020.

Whilst creating space for meeting quarantine requirements, the move is also aimed at giving an opportunity for the players taking part in the Indian Premier League (IPL) to make it to the LPL.

Adjusting the commencement date of the LPL gives adequate time for the players playing in the IPL to make it to the LPL.

“Since the IPL will go until the 10th of November, we thought to keep some space for the players taking part in the IPL, and who wish to make it to the LPL to take part in the tournament’’ said Mr. Ravin Wickramaratne, The Tournament Director, LPL.

Accordingly, the ‘Player Draft’ of the LPL, which was to take place on the 01st October is now shifted to 09th October.

The Lanka Premier League will consist of five franchises, whilst each can buy up to six international players.

The Lankan Premier League (LPL 2020) is still to take off but Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) has launched another ambitious project – this time it is T10 League of Sri Lanka. SLC has released a tender to identify Sports Marketing & Management Agency that will join hands with SLC to manage franchise ownership and identify sponsors for the league.

This is first time that any ICC Full Member will host a T10 league. No details, dates for the tournament are yet finalized. The only information as per the Tender invite is that in the first edition 17 games will be played in the T10 Format over 11 match days.

The T10 League will have 6 teams and each team can have a squad of 16 players. In the first season of the league all matches will be played at two venues Dambulla and Pallkeke International cricket stadiums.

While the finer points of the tournament are yet to be finalised, SLC hopes to hold the tournament sometime in 2021 according to the information provided by SLC.

LPL 2020 : When is LPL 2020 player auctions ?

Though their is little information coming in from the board in regard to the Lankan Premier League 2020 (LPL 2020), but SLC has announced that auctions for the first edition of the league will be held on 9th October.

The T20 tournament, originally scheduled to start on November 14, has now been “readjusted” to November 21.

The player draft, which was to take place on October 1, has now been shifted to October 9.

“Since the IPL (Indian Premier League) will go until the 10th of November, we thought to keep some space for the players taking part in the IPL, and who wish to make it to the LPL to take part in the tournament,” LPL’s Tournament Director Ravin Wickramaratne said in a statement.

Five teams will compete in 23 matches over a 15-day period.

The five teams are named after Colombo, Kandy, Galle, Dambulla and Jaffna districts.

Their is little clarity come in from the SLC till date about who are the franchises of LPL 2020 and which all players will be participating in the auction.

The draft for Sri Lanka's upcoming Premier League tournament has been postponed, the cricket board said Thursday, as the island nation battles to contain its biggest-ever coronavirus outbreak. Leading internationals including Chris Gayle, Darren Sammy, Darren Bravo, Shahid Afridi and Shakib Al Hasan had been up for grabs at a Friday ceremony ahead of the Twenty20 competition. But with more than 1,000 workers at one factory near the capital Colombo testing positive in just 72 hours this week, the government has locked down some regions and banned public gatherings.

"The 'Player Draft' will not go ahead as planned, owing to the current health situation," governing body Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) said in a statement.

The auction-style event was rescheduled to October 19, and SLC added that it would continue to "closely monitor the health situation" over the next few days.

The 23-match event has already been rescheduled twice. It was due to kick off in August but was moved to November 14 and then November 21.

Sri Lanka has reported almost 4,500 coronavirus infections and 13 related deaths so far.

The decision comes just over a week after Bangladesh called off its Test series in Sri Lanka, saying the hosts' virus restrictions were too onerous.

The Tests in October-November were meant to mark the two nations' return to international cricket after a months-long lockdown halted professional sports worldwide.

October 10 (ANI): Having overcome quite a few hurdles, the Lanka Premier League (LPL) is finally scheduled to be played at five different venues across the Island Nation from November 21 to December 13.

Seeing the light of day after hitting a dead-end after just two seasons, the league is set to bring cricket back in the country which has seen the coronavirus pandemic affecting normalcy just like other countries across the globe.

With Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) awarding the rights for the league to Dubai-based Innovative Production Group (IPG), the group will oversee the handing of franchise ownership rights, global broadcasting and media rights, on-ground sponsorship, and event production rights.

Speaking to ANI for the first time after winning the rights, IPG CEO Anil Mohan said that not only are they looking to organise a world-class league, but also have their eyes on the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to allow participation of a few recently retired players as that will further enhance the level of competition.

"I can't divulge details but, yes there are a few recently retired Indian players we are expecting to see in action subject to BCCI clearance. The excitement for LPL, both among fans and also the media is quite palpable. Not only Sri Lanka, the entire sub-continent and its neighbouring countries, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Afghanistan and the UAE, are looking forward to the LPL with a lot of expectations.

"Due to the immense potential it holds, both for the game and business opportunities, it was enough to start the conversation among the people, though most of it was way off the mark. But those are things of the past, the tournament is all set to kick-off from November 21 and the players draft is slated for October 19," he said.

Asked what made IPG take up the opportunity that comes with promoting the league, Mohan said: "After IPG conquered the world of sport production it's a natural next step to start owning league rights and what better opportunity than to own the Lanka Premier League. Sri Lankan market shares the same mindset as India where cricket runs in the bloodline.

"IPG has shared a long history by producing most of the cricket in the Island with Sri Lanka Cricket and it's an amazing board to work with, and therefore the decision to build a stronger bond with the board by picking up the LPL rights."The love for cricket in the Island Nation is well documented, but will it be the same post the coronavirus impact? Mohan is positive that it will be a breath of fresh air for the people who will get to watch top stars in action on the cricket pitch.

"Over 90 per cent of global sport halted as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic. People now are hungry for any live sport they can get. Though matches are played in empty stadiums, there has been a huge spike in viewership numbers both in television and digital medium. Sports fans too are exploring new avenues to beat the virus. The proof of this is the opening match of the IPL this season. It has been reported that 20 crore people tuned in which makes it the most-watched opening day in any sporting league ever.

"Sri Lanka too had have been devoid of any sporting events during this period, so what better way than to embrace the new normal with the most loved sports in the country. I have no doubt that LPL will get a very positive response from the fans," he said.

Some of the stars who are expected to be seen in action during this edition of the LPL are Chris Gayle, David Miller, Carlos Brathwaite, Sunil Narine, Andre Russel, Faf du Plessis, Darren Sammy, Lendl Simmons, and Hashim Amla among others. Getting some Indian guys to come in would be the cherry on the cake for the promoters. (ANI)

I hope azam performs and gains recognition

Let's ignore some of the crazy selections for a second. None of the following players were selected (unless my source for the squads was wrong):

Chamara Kapugedera
Jeevan Mendis
Sachithra Senanayake
Lahiru Thirimanne
Dilshan Munaweera
Sachith Pathirana
Vikum Sanjaya
Sadeera Samarawickrama
Vishwa Fernando
Lahiru Gamage
Kaushal Silva
Tharindu Kaushal
Sandun Weerakkody
Malinda Pushpakumara
Prabath Jayasuriya
Mahela Udawatte
Dimuth Karunaratne
Chamika Karunaratne

Manpreet Gony and Bisla lol. What sort of selections are those two...Bisla has moved to commentary in domestic matches iirc, what is he still doing playing?

Galle Gladiators owned by same franchise as Quetta, probably the reason why he was selected in the first place, does he actually have potential or is this another case of favoritism?

Azam Khan has looked good whenever Ive seen him. A fine player for this format if he is doubling up as WK.

We can make another fantastic team from these and the unsold overseas:

Colin Munro / Martin Guptill
Dilshan Munaweera
Sadeera Samarawickrama (W)
Mohammad Hafeez
Lahiru Thirimanne
Shakib al-Hasan
Jeevan Mendis
Sachithra Senanayake
Tim Southee
Vishwa Fernando
Lahiru Gamage

Dimuth Karunaratne
Mahela Udawatte
Chamara Kapugedera
Ravi Bopara
Sachith Pathirana
Vikum Sanjaya
Chamika Karunaratne

Would that really look out of place? I think not. I know they are planning to add an extra team in upcoming years.

Will be very interesting to see how he does, only heard bits and pieces on this forum and seen him in one two PSL games so can't really make judgement either way. Pakistan have lacked a decent WK for a while.

Just out of curiosity, when is the thing going to be played? Is this going to it's own month in the calendar year?

He has alot of potentional proberly the cleanest hitter of a cricket ball along with khushdil he can run between the wicket quite well but he needs to loose some weight but hes very young if he improves his fitness then he will be in the pakistan team within 1 year I belive he also a keeper but not sure how good he is

Salman Khan's family buys Lankan Premier League franchise Kandy Tuskers

Lankan Premier League (LPL) franchise Kandy Tuskers has been bought by actor Salman Khan’s family. The Bollywood star's father Salim Khan and younger brother Sohail are part of the consortium that has invested in the franchise.

The tournament was initially scheduled in August 2020 but had to be postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. It will now be held from November 21 to December 13, 2020, with five franchises fighting for the title.

The Khans told Times of India that they see a lot of ‘potential’ in the proposed league.

“Given the players we have in our team, the league in general and the passion of the fans, which are second to none, we see a lot of potential,” Sohail Khan said.

The LPL auctions took place on October 19th amid some confusions regarding the availability of players. But the player drafts have now been completed and Sohail Khan was happy with the team that they managed to put together. He said:

“Gayle is obviously the Boss Man, but we have a very good team. Kusal Perera is our local icon and we also have Liam Plunkett, Wahab Riaz, and Nuwan Pradeep among others. It is a good balance of youth and experience.”

Sohail Khan also vowed to the fans that Salman would attend all the Kandy Tuskers (KT) matches in the LPL.

LPL will have five franchises battling it out in the middle

Apart from the Kandy Tuskers, there will be four other franchises in the LPL, namely: Dambulla Hawks (DH), Galle Gladiators (GG), Jaffna Stallions (JS) and Colombo Kings (CK).

In addition to the Sri Lankan players, the international stars drafted to participate in the league include the ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle (KT), Andre Russell (CK), Shahid Afridi (GG), Faf du Plessis (CK), Liam Plunkett (KT) and Carlos Brathwaite (DH).

Indian cricketers Manpreet Singh Gony and Manvinder Bisla will also be part of the LPL. Both of them will be representing the Colombo Kings.

Why the awful franchise names. What the hell is this obsession the Gladiators, Kings etc. Does SL not have any landmarks and originality. But none is as bad Islamabad United.

Five individuals have already made the decision not to participate, a blow to a competition which has already been blighted by delays.

Dawid Malan, Faf du Plessis and David Miller have all withdrawn, with the tournament clashing with South Africa and England's white-match matches which were confirmed last week.

Andre Russell had cited injury for the reason for pulling out. Currently playing in the Indian Premier League for Kolkata Knight Riders, the West Indian allrounder is nursing a knee injury.

Manvinder Bisla has also confirmed his preference not to play but has not disclosed a reason for the decision.

Wow this is a T10 league. I watched a T10 Dubai league it was horrendous. I think T20 should be it. T10 is lame. Any future Sri Lankan players to watch out for ? I thought Avishak Fernando looked good but has no footwork and won't survive for long with that technique. All other SL players have been utterly disappointing. I see that no former players have cricketing sons other than Jaysuriya and Hashan Tilakaratne. Tilakaratne kid is a spinner and Jayasuriya's kid is like 12 years old lol.

Former India pacer Irfan Pathan on Sunday said he will play in the Lanka Premier League for Kandy Tuskers franchise.

The Kandy-based team has West Indies legend Chris Gayle, local star Kusal Perera, Sri Lankan T20 specialists Kusal Mendis and Nuwan Pradeep and England right-arm fast bowler Liam Plunkett among others.

Former Sri Lanka captain Hashan Tillakaratne is also a part of the Kandy Tuskers coaching staff.

The 36-year-old Pathan, who retired from all forms of cricket earlier this year after playing 29 Tests, 120 ODIs and 24 T20Is, said he was looking forward to the T20 tournament.

“I am extremely excited to be part of the Kandy franchisee in LPL. We have some exciting names in the team and I am looking forward for the experience,” the Baroda-based Pathan was quoted as saying in a statement issued by LPL.

Kandy franchise owner Sohail Khan said, “Irfan’s inclusion will not only add to the firepower of the squad but his experience will be a huge asset to the team.”The LPL is scheduled to be played from November 21 to December 13 at two venues -- Mahinda Rajapaksa International Cricket Stadium in Hambantota and Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Kandy.

With Health Authorities in Sri Lanka delaying permission to host the inaugural Lanka Premier League T20 tournament, organisers are now considering the possibility of hosting the tournament overseas.

A senior Sri Lankan Cricket official speaking to NewsWire said that a discussion was held about hosting the tournament overseas as a back up plan.

Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa speaking to NewsWire said that there will be another discussion with health authorities on Wednesday before drawing a final decision about the tournament.

The Minister said that he is confident that the tournament can be played as scheduled adhering to all necessary health guidelines.

“I am confident the tournament can be played here as scheduled. We will meet the health authorities again on Wednesday” he said.

Sports Minister Namal Rajapaksa has reportedly proposed to play the tournament only in Hambantota in a bubble linked to Mattala airport. (NewsWire)
