Lasith Malinga on the decline?

He's got a good belly on him. Dude needs to up his protein and get some muscle around that tummy, along with some intense cardio of course :D

The guy is having a poor year atm...really looks quite ordinary at present...is it just bad form?, is he on the decline? or do batsman just play him better now?...

His stats worsened after the two new ball rule came into effect. Before that when he was fitter bowling 140ks he was unplayable with his reverse swinging yorkers at the death. Combination of lack of fitness and dropping pace and also two new ball rule has ruined his career.

That 2 new balls thing has effected all bowlers. The truth is the guy was becoming way to predictable at the death

He played so much cricket and international tournaments like IPL BBL and his mystery has been uncovered. If he still had good pace he would be doing better. His beer belly hasnt helped

He is finished. Anwar was smashing him like he was Vinay Kumar or Dinda. Malinga is just living off his name atm. He has put on too much weight and lost a lot of pace. He is a trundler now. Unless he goes on an intense fitness programme and loses his fat and ups his pace. He will be smashed by any half decent batsman like Anwar Ali showed.

Malinga also looks like he has lost that desire to play at the top level. I know he was always a laid back cool guy. But he has a resigned look on his face nowadays after getting a phainty. The phainties are becoming a lot common nowadays.

Conceded 40 off 4 overs with 1 wicket.. but I think Pakistan have just played him really well.

In a recent picture, he looked too fat. LOL at that line up. That bowling line up, it has 200 run written allover it.

Its quite sad to see Malinga's decline as an outsider. I loved his bowling, the unique slingy action and on his day was capable of breathtakingly destructive spells (v SA in 07 WC, 5-31 v England in 2012 WC, 6-7 in the Big Bash etc).

I know he's had loads of knee injuries but there's still ways for a professional athlete to keep in shape and avoid looking as if he's in his second trimester.

He was more destructive before he got famous, he bowled much in 150s and his bouncer was what scared a lot of batsmen but he also bowled lot of bad balls. Then he barely started hitting 150s, then to 140s and his bouncers now a days barely touch 135Km/H. He doesn't bowl quicker than 138KM/H anymore. That is life, unfortunate events do happen, don't know why he can't lose his wait.

Haven't watched any of of the current T20I series, have only followed the scores online however how has Malinga looked? He certainly has decent figures but what about his pace, fitness etc, how do they look?

He is one of those idiots who sold out their bodies to IPL for few pieces. Just look at his commitment there and what he does when he plays for SL. He appears to be ready to give his life for those useless IPL matches but not ready to bend his back for SL. Pathetic guy!

Lasith Malinga two short of 300 international ODI wickets.

S ri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga will play in his 200th One-day International when he marks his bowling run-up against India at the Dumbulla International Stadium on Sunday.

Malinga, who turns 35 in nine days, also needs just two wickets to complete a tally of 300 in ODI cricket. The slinger has taken 298 wickets at an average of 28.39 with seven five-wicket match hauls.

The senior bowler will be vital as Sri Lanka try to bounce back from the 0-3 Test series drubbing against India. Although Malinga’s ODI appearances have been sporadic, he figured in Sri Lanka’s ICC Champions Trophy campaign as well as the home series against Zimbabwe in July, where the southern Africans toppled the home team.

Sri Lanka skipper Upul Tharanga was hopeful his pacers would finish their bowling promptly. Tharanga, deputising for an unwell skipper Angelo Mathews in the ICC Champions Trophy in June, was suspended as skipper because of a slow over rate in the opening game against South Africa.

Tharanga was suspended for two matches after the bowlers took four hours to complete the quota of overs against the Proteas, a good 30 minutes extra. However, Sri Lanka bounced back to defeat India while Tharanga sat out.

Asked about the ban when he last led Sri Lanka, Tharanga said: “We discussed that at length. Even Angelo had similar problems and he had been warned. It’s up to our fielders and especially bowlers. We cannot slow down. In meeting, we discussed how to get things to finish on time. It is important to finish on time without getting banned.”

His last 30-40 odis wickets have come at an average of 40+. Seems he's yet another Asian player just playing on so he can reach a milestone. (300 odi wickets).

What a shame.

Malinga bowled the single greatest over I've ever seen against SA in the 2007 WC with his 4 in 4 over. I remember a match report that summed up how close SL were to winning the match, with a ball that was close to the stumps and bowling Kallis to SA defeat. 'If only the stumps had hair.'

I remember feeling sad when he retired from Test Cricket without learning how to succeed in it because of injuries.

This is sadder.

Malinga has been through multiple injuries and with age his fitness has waned. Tbh I think he will retire soon.
Only reason why he can make into current SL side is because SL are in their worst phase ever since receiving test status

Lasith Malinga, Sri Lanka’s captain for the fourth One-Day International against India on Thursday (August 31), spoke at length – sometimes too much so – about the problems in the game in his country after their 168-run defeat.

Malinga even threw off Dinesh Ratnasingham, the Sri Lankan media manager, on a couple of occasions with his pauses – with Ratnasingham assuming he was done with one of his lengthy responses, as did the others at the press conference, Malinga would pick up the thread and continue.

What Malinga offered was that losing an array of experienced players – and not just the big names – had a big part to play in Sri Lanka’s recent plunge in form.

Their record since India’s arrival on their shores is 7-0. They lost the Test series 3-0 and are down 4-0 in the five-match ODI series after the latest loss at the R Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

“What I personally think is that our problems are because we lost a generation of players,” said Malinga. “If that generation was here, we wouldn’t have an inexperienced team like this. We had players like Chamara Silva, Thilina Kandamby, Jehan Mubarak, Malinga Bandara, Kaushal Lokuarachchi, Kaushal Weeraratne, Tharanga Paranavitana, Malinda Warnapura … those players played about ten years of domestic cricket by the time they were 29 or 30, and played internationals for two or three years, and then they were out of the international scene.

“We lost that ten-twelve years of experience from them. It’s really hard to get that experience from a fresh-out-of-school cricketer or a club cricketer. The loss of that generation is being felt in our cricket. If they had still been here – I don’t know why we lost them – we would have had the ability to field six or seven experienced players in the team. When I started playing in 2004, there were seven or eight experienced players in the team. A few years ago we lost that. Now our cricket has declined.”

This was the first time during the ODIs, that one of the three captains Sri Lanka have used so far conceded that things were in bad shape. While Upul Tharanga had insisted that it was not as bad as it seemed, Chamara Kapugedera argued that the team was not even struggling.

Both of them tried, in their way, to keep the situation under control and not let out the worst kept secret in Sri Lanka, that the former world champions are nothing but a pale shadow of their past.

Malinga was a tad different, but even he could not help but switch to damage-control mode after yet another humiliating loss. “We need to give these new guys a place and experience until 2019. We need to be patient. We need to get together as a country,” he said. “If we keep criticising everyone one by one, we will keep getting these new teams. We have to protect the players we have. The current thinking is always ‘the player who is in the team is bad, but the one outside deserves a place’.

“As a player who has played 14 years international cricket, I think the people who are in the team are there because they are better than those outside.”

“I’ll see where I’m at after this series, and evaluate how long I can play given the way my body is," said Lasith Malinga. © AFP

At the Premadasa on Thursday, Sri Lanka lost the toss and conceded a whopping 375 runs. At the toss, Malinga had said that chasing was Sri Lanka’s strength, implying that it was a good flick of the coin to lose. But Sri Lanka were bowled out for 207 in 42.4 overs. The margin of defeat was their worst (in terms of runs) at home.

“We didn’t bowl well in this game,” offered Malinga. “With the batsmen, we only had one experienced batsman – Angelo (Mathews). Others are young players, but they need time. They are still learning. They tried their best. I feel they don’t have much confidence to play their natural game, because the last couple of matches they lost and everyone wants to get runs. They aren’t playing natural game. Everyone is waiting for a win.”

Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma were the chief architects of India’s run feast on Thursday. With the two of them slamming centuries, India realised 219 runs for the second wicket before Manish Pandey and MS Dhoni saw them to a mammoth total.

“They played really well,” said Malinga on the Rohit-Kohli partnership. “We didn’t consistently bowl a good line and length. I think on this kind of wicket, our length is very crucial. The first 30-40 runs Virat got very quickly. I feel there was a bit of grass on the wicket and bowling first, we tried to swing the ball. Then we went for a few runs. It’s a learning process for the young players. We tried to swing the ball earlier, and that’s why we went fuller. But it didn’t happen. That’s the game of cricket.”

One of the aspects that stood out during Sri Lanka’s stint with the ball was that none of their bowlers were given long spells. Rotated after only two or three overs, none of them were able to get into a rhythm and execute their plans.

Malinga defended the decision, saying the weather had a part to play. “Today was a very hot day. I feel it’s hard for everyone to concentrate on long spells in that kind of heat. That’s why we realised ‘okay, we need to bowl short spells and get maximum from the player’. Then they have good energy for two-three overs,” he said.

Sri Lanka’s fielding was also at an all-time low on the day. “Most of the players are young. They haven’t played much international cricket. They are excited to perform, and if you are excited you can do more mistakes,” said Malinga.

The only positive, at least for one member of the team, was that Malinga finally ended the wait for his 300th ODI wicket.

Malinga, who got rid of Kohli for 131 to get to the mark, was a picture of relief when the moment came, and later led everyone to believe that he could consider bringing the curtains down on his career.

“I’ll see where I’m at after this series, and evaluate how long I can play given the way my body is,” he said. “No matter how experienced I am, if I can’t win a match for the team and do what the team needs, there’s no point in me being here. I’ll see if I can regain that form over the next three or four months. If I can’t deliver, then I’ll happily retire.”

Cricket: Malinga refusing to pack his bags

Is it the end of international cricket for Lasith Malinga?

On Wednesday, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) selectors announced a 15-man squad for the five-match ODI series against Pakistan starting October 13 but Malinga, a veteran of 204 ODI matches did not find a place.

There’s all possibility that he will not be considered for selection for the 50-over game in the future as he is reportedly not in Sri Lanka’s plan for the 2019 World Cup but the 34-year-old is likely to retain a place in the shorter format—the T20.

But Malinga, who has already retired from the longer format due to a recurring knee injury, has no plans to hang up his boots anytime soon.

“If I go, I will go on my own and not because someone else is putting pressure on me,” he said, when asked whether it’s the end of the road for him.

“I want to play till 2020—the 2019 World Cup and the 2020 T20 World Cup—and I will keep performing whenever I get an opportunity, be it domestic or international cricket. That’s the only thing I can control and I know if I perform well, I will be in the team."

Since his return from a long injury lay-off, Malinga has largely been a diminishing force, averaging 62.30 in 13 matches.

He has picked up only 10 wickets during the same period—a far cry from a man who has inflicted fear on opposing batsmen with subtle variations in his bowling.

His greatest weapon, though, has been the yorkers which the batsmen found increasing difficult to cope with.

“Obviously, I am disappointed with my own performance more than anyone else. But they need to understand that I am coming after an injury—a serious injury which threatened my career several times. I have played through pain and continue to don the national jersey for well over 14-years now,” he said.

“People have forgotten all what I’ve done during those 14 years and talk of my performances in the recent series."

His recent record would have been different, had the catches off his bowling been taken.

He says fielders have dropped as many as 14 catches off his bowling since his return to the side.

Malinga made his debut in 2004 against UAE at Dambulla and since then has been one of the key figures in the Sri Lankan side.

He was the first man in the history of the game to pick four wickets in successive balls when he took Sri Lanka to the brink of victory against South Africa in the 2007 World Cup.

He also has two more hat-tricks against Australia and Kenya, the only cricketer to achieve the feat, and was the bowling spearhead in Sri Lanka’s excellent run in global tournaments from 2007-2014.

Malinga led the national team to victory at the 2014 World T20 tournament, the country’s second global silverware after the 1996 World Cup victory.

With his knee injury threatening his career, Malinga retired from Test cricket at the age of 27 in 2011 but continued to impress in limited-over games until a recurrence of the injury forced him into another long break.

“I don’t think anyone understands how serious my injury was,” he said.

"I have played through pain for my country and, just because I had a bad series against India, now I am not good enough to be in the side. If the selections were done on current form, I don’t think there would have been any player left in the side by now. I will keep working hard to earn my place in the side.

Though, Malinga’s axing has much to do with his performance, some say he was a "bad" influence on the other players in the side—something which may have worked on selectors' minds when finalising the squad.

But Malinga says he has only been a good influence on the players.

“I didn’t go to a big school in Colombo, nor had any influence from anyone. But I worked hard to be the cricketer I am today. This helped me to win respect from fans and also from some players within the team. Is that what they call a bad influence?” he asked.

Malinga was recently in trouble after criticising the country’s Sports Minister after the latter questioned the fitness of players.

At a subsequent brain-storming session, he highlighted some of the key issues which he believes had contributed to the slide of the national team.

Lasith Malinga will be part of Mahela Jayawardene’s coaching staff for Indian Premier League champions Mumbai Indians. Malinga was named Mumbai Indians bowling mentor on Wednesday. (IND vs SA 3rd ODI live)

Although Shane Bond is the official bowling coach of IPL champions Mumbai Indians, Malinga will add to the think tank, having played 110 matches for MI. The other coaches in Jayawardene’s team are Robin Singh (batting) and James Pemment (fielding).

Malinga has been out of favour with the Sri Lankan selectors in recent times. Handicapped by injuries, the 34-year-old has been overtaken by younger pacers.

“It’s a great opportunity to continue my association with Mumbai Indians. Mumbai has been my home away from home for the last decade. As a player, I have enjoyed the journey with Mumbai Indians and now as mentor, I look forward to the new chapter,” said Malinga on his new appointment.

“Mumbai Indians have a proven record of scouting and bringing forth the young talents at the national stage. It will be a boon for these youngsters as well the established ones to have the combine force of Shane Bond and Lasith Malinga to back them,” said Mumbai Indians’ Akash Ambani.

Lasith Malinga mulls retirement, says mentally done with cricket

Lasith Malinga Mulls Retirement, Says Mentally Done With Cricket

PTI | Updated: February 8, 2018, 1:04 PM IST

St Moritz: Sri Lanka speedster Lasith Malinga has hinted at possible retirement, saying that he is mentally done with international cricket now that his eventful IPL career is over. Malinga was on Wednesday appointed as bowling mentor of Mumbai Indians.

The Sri Lankan has been the core of Mumbai Indians winning combination in the last decade. He has donned the prestigious Mumbai Indians jersey in 110 matches of the 157 games the franchise has played so far.

"Mentally I am over with playing cricket. I don't think I will play anymore international cricket. I am planning to announce my retirement soon," Malinga said on the sidelines of the St Moritz Ice Cricket Challenge.

"I have not spoken to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) but once I go back I will have to again go through domestic grind, see how my body responds. But now as my IPL career is also over and I am starting a new chapter with Mumbai Indians, I might not play again," he added.

Malinga knows it would be tough not to play in front of a capacity Wankhede Stadium crowd wearing the Mumbai Indians blue jersey but admitted that in his heart he knew that his time was up.

"Everyone gets that signal. Even the great Wasim Akram knew when his time was up," he said.

"I was not surprised at their decision not to have retained me. I had 10 very good years with Mumbai Indians and I achieved a lot. But this year, the owners spoke to me and told me about their vision going forward. They wanted to create a good team for the next three years. I also understand that my time in competitive cricket is over now."

The Sri Lankan slinger said he is looking forward to the new chapter of his life as a mentor.

"I am 34-years-old and not getting any younger. And I feel this is the right time to make a career move. Mumbai Indians had the mentorship role in mind and I am happy to start a new innings," said Malinga, who has a record 331 T20 wickets across 248 games (international plus franchise).

"My job as a mentor will now give me an opportunity to guide the next crop of fast bowlers. I will pass on my knowledge to them and also it will be an opportunity to assess myself in the coaching arena," he further added.

Malinga acknowledged the emergence of Jasprit Bumrah in Mumbai Indians outfit and said he is a fine prospect in the shortest format. "Bumrah has emerged as a great death bowler. He has the skill sets which I also had -- bowling at the death overs under pressure. For that you need a different temperament as IPL is a high-pressure tournament," he said.

"What makes me even more proud is the fact that he has transformed his IPL success into international cricket. I was so happy to see him perform so well in South Africa. His biggest quality is the ability to be consistent."

He looks physically done as well

His peak years were from 2006-2011

Forget to add that I will feel sad once he retires and always do for any cricketer that I have grown up watching over the years.

Due to being MI fan, I may have watched Malinga bowl more overs than any Non-Indian bowler. Very happy that he is back with MI.

Lol at 'prestigious Mumbai Indian jersey'

Good luck in retirement though

Was very exciting between 2007-2014

Don't think he has the body to play international cricket. All that IPL cricket and the amount of internationals he played with that bowling action are taking its tole.

At his best he was a threat and entertaining to watch.

Last night Malinga was playing in the IPL.

This morning, he was in Kandy and took 7/49 in a provincial 50 over match - his best ever List A figures.

At 35 years of age, Sri Lanka’s Lasith Malinga is still going strong. So strong, in fact, that he’s able to play two games in two days, across two countries. The end result: combined bowling figures of 10/83!

On Wednesday, Malinga took the field for Mumbai Indians against Chennai Super Kings, and took 3/34 as he removed Shane Watson, Kedar Jadhav and Dwayne Bravo.

After helping his side to a 37-run victory, he then jetted off to Sri Lanka, to turn out for Galle in the domestic limited-overs tournament.

Rather than succumb to the fatigue of an international flight, the veteran fast bowler returned the best List A figures of his career, ripping through Kandy with 7/49 to help Galle to a 156-run win.

Malinga’s form bodes well for Sri Lanka ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup, where he will make his fourth appearance at the tournament.

All credit to Malinga, he’s obviously worked hard on his fitness and is still able to put in performances like the one we’ve seen today. I didn’t think he still had it in him.

Lasith Malinga may not have the same pace like he used to have but he is still very good. Can nail the yorkers and good with the slower one.

Malinga seems to always perform against England but goes back to his old self when he bowls to any other team

he helped MI to win IPL title.. he's not good he used to be but he has the experience and still one of the best under pressure situation (like defending in last overs) ..

At the end of the day, whatever shape you may be in; your pride, passion and courage still mean a great deal; the Malinga against England was all desire and love for his Island; a man that was not going to surrender or quit on his stool no matter what. #VivaLanka SL_Fan

You know what, it matters if you just don't give up. Honestly it's a cliche but so true, you will find yourself punching well above your weight :akhtar

+1

The guy is worth millions, is at the end of his career, had already played multiple world cups, probably knew that Sri Lanka would struggle in this World Cup yet he still tried so hard to get his place in the World Cup squad and has now done this.

Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) will lose one more cricketer as their star fast bowler Lasith Malinga retires during the home series against Bangladesh.

According to the sources close to the 35-year-old right arm bowler, he has got Australia's Permanent Residency (PR) and will move with his family there after the retirement.

"He may also take up some coaching assignment in Australia", the source further added.

Malinga is already in Australia now and likely to meet few of his friends there on Saturday.

He has already spoken the chief selector (Ashantha de Mel) from Australia and in formed about his date of arrival (July 22) in Sri Lanka to play the ODI series beginning on July 26.

There have been number of Sri lankan cricketers who, after their retirement have moved to Sri Lanka and sought some coaching stints. One more name will be added to this.

Always enjoyed watching this guy bowl.

Whatever the format, whatever the conditions, he gave his all.

Unorthodox, innovative and a smart bowler.

I think it is time for him to retire from ODI. SL should start from scratch and be ready for 2023.

I hope he goes on to have a good last ODI match. Even though I´m quite a supporter of the Bangladesh team, I hope that they don´t spoil the party for Malinga.

A few days ago, I was wondering about Dhoni and asked myself the need of someone taking "break" from international cricket who hasn´t even been playing Test cricket since four and a half years. I wonder whether MS too is looking for a home series or a match to bow out?
