Liverpool have finally won the race to sign Southampton centre-back Virgil van Dijk for a world record £75 million fee for a defender.

The two clubs had again been in discreet negotiations in recent days following the acrimonious breakdown of a potential deal last summer and today reached an agreement on the transfer.

Personal terms and a medical have been completed and confirmation was made by Liverpool this evening.

Manchester City and Chelsea were both also interested and made inquiries at different stages of the past 12 months but Van Dijk will move to Anfield on January 1.

The Dutch defender has been handed the No 4 shirt and becomes the most expensive defender in world football.

The previous world record transfer for a defender was the £54m that Manchester City spent on Kyle Walker last summer.

Liverpool did not ultimately make a formal offer to Southampton last summer but were ready to pay around £60 million after it became clear that Van Dijk wanted to join them. Southampton were furious at the leak of information before a fee had been agreed and their complaint to the Premier League prompted an apology from Liverpool and an agreement not to pursue the deal.

That position held throughout the summer transfer window, with Southampton also turning down a large offer from Chelsea. Van Dijk then missed the start of the season amid concern at his focus before being reintegrated back into the team under new manager Mauricio Pellegrino. He had since been left out of the recent games against Chelsea, Huddersfield Town and Tottenham Hotspur.

A well trodden path | Southampton players bought by Liverpool in last four years

Rickie Lambert
Moved June 2 2014 for £4m - Boyhood Liverpool fan Lambert moved to Anfield in the summer of 2014 but scored just three goals before joining West Brom.

Adam Lallana
Moved July 1 2014 for £25m - Eyebrows were raised when Liverpool paid such a big fee for Lallana but he has been a big success and is highly valued by Jurgen Klopp.

Dejan Lovren
Moved July 27 2014 for £20m - Has endured a mixed time since heading to the north-west and could now find his place under threat from Virgil van Dijk.

Nathaniel Clyne
Moved July 1 2015 for £12.5m - Made the right-back position his own in his first two seasons at Liverpool but has not played in the current campaign due to injury.

Sadio Mane
Moved June 28 2016 for £34m - Mane is now widely recognised as one of the finest forwards in England after excelling following his move to Anfield.

Virgil van Dijk
Will move Jan 1 2018 for £75m Dutchman will become the most expensive defender in football history when he joins Liverpool when the transfer window opens.

Total spent by Liverpool on Southampton players since June 1 2014: £170.5m

Premier League leaders Manchester City had been keen and were preparing a £60 million opening bid but the situation moved on quickly in recent days and Southampton finally reached an agreement with Liverpool.

Personal terms on around £180,000-a-week had been agreed and Van Dijk's preference had always been Liverpool and the chance to work with their manager, Jurgen Klopp.

"Delighted and honoured to have agreed to become a Liverpool FC player!" said Van Dijk. "Today is a proud day for me and family as I join one of the biggest clubs in world football!

"I can't wait to pull on the famous red shirt for the first time in front of the Kop and will give everything I have to try and help this great club achieve something special in the years to come.

"I would also like to take this opportunity to say thank you to Les Reed, the board, manager, players, fans and everyone at Southampton. I will always be indebted to the club for giving me the opportunity to play in the Premier League and despite a difficult last few months I have thoroughly enjoyed my time at Saints and have made friends for life at the club. Thank you for everything."

Van Dijk's fee of £75m is level with Romelu Lukaku as the second most expensive transfer in Premier League history, behind only Manchester United’s £90m purchase of Paul Pogba.

Southampton have won one of their last 11 games and have now decided that it would be better to sell Van Dijk and reinvest the fee this January. Pellegrino is under growing pressure but has had the Van Dijk situation hanging over him since replacing Claude Puel as manager last summer.

If a solid but hardly a world beater is worth this much, what would a Baresi, Adams, Butcher etc be worth today?

He looked superb last season, but has been injured and struggling for form this season.

Liverpool badly need a centre half but I think £75M is too much to pay for this guy.

He's definitely not worth it. Not a bad player but no doubt he should NOT be the world's most expensive defender.

After that arsenal game this seems a bit of knee jerk signing

No way he's worth 75 million

Liverpool really needs to get a better scouting team that can unearth young talent and potential world class players

Have to pay the price the selling club quotes even if it's ridiculous. Just hope VVD's signing is not to prepare the fans for Coutinho's departure in January. Eventually the Brazilian will leave neither do I want an unhappy player at the club but he has to stay until the summer at least. I feel we still need to sign another centre back and goalie next month as well. VVD has the tactical, physical and technical know how to be a great signing. Those comparing him to past greats makes no sense, it is not his fault for being born much later then a Bobby Moore. As for what we have paid for him the price of a pint of milk was much less in the 1960's/70's then it is today. One day the owners are being attacked of not spending then the next they are accused of over spending. Make up your minds.

Well done FSG for getting the chequebook out and realising you can't avoid paying big fees all the time, as much as I detest the inflated transfer market prices these days.

But getting an individual is not enough, its the SYSTEM that needs to protect the defence better. Too often our CBs are exposed 2 v 2 and the midfield doesn't cover the defence enough.

Also this will be a useless signing if the GK position is not rectified as the two incumbent comedians are not good enough.

Great signing for LFC. Don’t think the price is an issue either as it will be covered by the increase in Coutinho‘s value over the past few months assuming he gets sold to Barcelona sooner or later.
