What's new

Liverpool FC | 2017-18 Season

Jürgen Klopp: "Phil Coutinho is not to replace in this transfer window. Barca paid big money for him because he is a rare player. It's not about replacing, it's about using our opportunities, our tools, tactics all this stuff."
Ah so you're just another corporate puppet.

Imagine looking at how well our "Fab Four" attackers were doing and deciding to sell one of them without replacing them.

Staggering that we're gutting our attacking options by allowing both Coutinho and Sturridge to exit.

Which serious big club does this ?!

Which player could possibly come close to replacing Coutinho? Mahrez is decent but is a more of winger and cannot play in the middle behind the strikers. No point spending money if the right option is not there.

As for Sturridge, we should have sold him, he spends more time on the medical table than on the pitch!

Apparently Sturridge is on 150 k a week

It's all about money with fsg and they definently wanted the mercurial Sturridge out with that wage bill but atm a loan deal is the only best option

They could have still retained coutinho till end of season like Leipzig have done with keita , or got an agreement with coutinho and let a summer bid follow where he could have gone for 200 million , we reduced our price for coutinho , barca even claimed this

I would walk out if I was Huddersfield fan at the stadium.... disgustingly negative tactics for a home game. Already 2-0 down, but still in total defend mode.

Made short work of Porto with the three up front putting five past them. Not missing Couts at the moment, test will be if and when one of the three forwards gets injured. Still upset at being eliminated from the FA Cup.

Great win, great game.

As I said many times - Klopp is among the best coaches around, punching well above the weight of his squad. This can work in head to heads, big KOs ..... but it won't work in 38 game marathons; neither in Cup finals, where other finalist can rest their key players in previous game. And, it won't work against lower skilled physical teams in domestic cup ties, who'll hit it hard & run harder. Klopp has a fantastic record to make finals, both at BvB & LFC, but his career is almost always near about - one reason is the way he operates his squad.

Beating Porto 5-0 at Estadio do Dragao is probably a record for any team, in any competition (at least in last 20 years), and guy got that with a squad reads -

Starters: Karius, T Alexander-Arnold, VvD, Lovren, Robertson, Milner, Henderson, Wijnaldum, Mane, Salah, Firmino

Subs: Matip, Ings, Gomez

Apart from Salah, VvD and may be Mane & Bobby - none of these players are ever good enough to seat on the bench of other (possible) 6 Quarter finalists barring Spurs. That's Klopp - deserves every penny he is earning and this is after making a small net transfer profit this year (and saving around 35mn wage, through mass loaning of fringe players). It hurts more, because just about 3.5 players, we could have shown Pep what's life is outside of 1/2 horse race. I do realize where that fund for Anfield roadside stand extension is coming from & Yanks will count every Penney for that extra accommodation, when finally they feel that now their soccer asset is ripe enough to cash on.

Man City are on a run never seen before. No way Liverpool can achieve that consistency anytime soon

Easily can - if Klopp is given just the amount Pep is spending for his defensive bench. Take my 3.5 players -

0.5: VvD from August (Yanks, thought they'll get the big apple of 4th spot by galloping that money as well, but by Nov, Klopp had told them that he can't ensure 85mn pay cheque with this back line - Yanks got fire on their a$$ and out bided even Sheikh Mansoor!!!!!)
1.0: A genuine GK - I take Oblak (Keno works also, and he is German, would have been swinging tail at Klopp's first whistle ......... but, his contract at Leverkussen is till 2020, they would have stripped Yanks for at least 35mn BP ...... so, Klopp didn't think there is any GK better than what he already has)
1.0: A CM, better than Sir Hendo, Barron Milner & Lord Ox - I would have paid 15mn extra & brought Kieta by Jan. Pep would have paid 60mn extra and brought him on 2nd July
0.5: A replacement, better than Gallacher for Coutinho. Those cunning Yanks finalized Coutinho sale in August, but they hold on to him for Barca to get desperate and wasting time, so that they don't need to spend back in August or January. It was quite possible to line up Mahrez or even James Rod from Real and exchange on the same day.
0.5: An winger (Lemar) in January to cover-up over worked 3 forwards.

Klopp has managed work load of his bikini thin squad some what by dropping ELF & FA Cups - but still a CL QF Run (at least 3 more games, more than that midweek travel) and grueling 12 more EPL games, with Spurs & Arsenal breathing on tail ..... it's going to be tough. We'll do better than expected against top half teams, because Klopp is good in 1 on 1; but then you'll see us doing what we did at the 20th position team.

The golden rule in soccer is - "Money doesn't ensure success, but without spending in necessity, you don't even have a shot at it" - Yanks have violated that, we'll have to pay for it.

Oblak is too big for Liverpool at this point.

He's arguably top 3 keepers in the world right now

I think the real test in champions league is when we come up against the better teams that will test our defence , how our defence can cope

We won man city 4-3 but we should have won that comfortably but let goals in the end

We drew Tottenham again letting goals in

And against sevilla we were 3 up and then let 3 goals in .

It's our Achilles heal atm

Oblak won't join Liverpool no matter how much you offer. Athletico don't need to accept and I think he would rather join PSG.

I can name at least 20 GK’s between Oblak & our jokers - unfortunately none is available for Karius’s price, that’s 4.5mn with add ons, hence Klopp don’t feel bd any GK better than what he already has.

For example, Joe Hart - he is just 30, undisputed English No. 1, despite howlers still different class than our two and he was willing to come as well. In fact Pep would have allowed him to leave even for a token fee - problem was his wage - he draws more than what our Yanks playing their 3 goal tenders.

Even West Ham is paying his full wage and 3mn loan fee.😩

Even if Oblak goes to PSG, their current 2 Keepers won’t stay - both Trapp & Areola are young & squad GK for Germany & France, with the No. 1 significantly older; they won’t jeoperdise their National chance by sitting on PSG bench. At present Emery is distributing the GK opportunity (of League & CL) to both; which Oblak won’t accept - bottom line is if not Oblak, still there are several options available, but it would cost Yanks much more than 4.5mn fee & £60k/week.

This new song Liverpool fans have for Mo Salah is something else

[Sung to the tune of Dodgy's 'Good Enough' the lyrics are as follows:]

If he's good enough for you, he's good enough for me, If he scores another few then I'll be muslim too

If he's good enough for you he's good enough for me then sitting in a mosque is where I wanna be.

LFC have played with more stability in the last few games, Spurs were lucky imo to score two goals.

I thought Porto started off pretty well and were looking dangerous in the first 10 mins but as soon as LFC settled down, we controlled the game from then on. We scored 5 goals but there was only 5 shots on target which shows a clinical nature in front of goal. Lovren, VVD, Alex-A and Robertson were superb at the back and didn't give a sniff to the Porto forwards.

We have a nice break now since we're not in the FA Cup, so its a good time for players to rest and enjoy some sunshine in Marbella.

Stop making excuses for Klopp not wanting to sign a GK. Has nothing to do with FSG, they have given him 75 million to spend on a defender so of course he has money for a keeper but he would rather stick with current opitions. In the summer I think Liverpool will sign a keeper but it won't be Oblak.

If Oblak comes in they won't share any games out. He'll play league and the champions league games. There isn't a lot to choose between Trapp and Areola hence the rotation. Also Klopp is rotating the keepers, so why will Oblak join Liverpool to be roatetd going by your logic?LOL

Just checked this season games played for PSG, Areola has played 31 times. So don't know what rotation you are talking about :)).

This is why I love this club - John Barnes became a cult icon who broke down barriers as a black man at a time when racism was rife in the 80s and 90s, and now Salah is doing the same at a time of rampant Islamophobia.

As for the Porto result - I haven't watched much football recently but what a fantastic performance. I keep saying it again and again - imagine how far we could go with a stable defence and GK !

We're still an injury away from looking light in attack so we need to KEEP investing in the squad.

Check Trapp as well - last year I have seen them playing in 2 halves. If Areola is confirmed 1st choice, then it makes easier for us. He is 24, contract expiring in 2019, and Lloris is 31, might struggle to keep No. 1 spot by next Euro ... Areola is 1st choice back-up now, but Alban Lafont is breathing on his neck and that kid is even better at 19 (He has 85 League 1 Cap before turning 19!!!!) - Areola would love to be LFC No. 1 under a German Manager and regularly start for EPL & CL games. I am not asking for both Areola & Trapp - one will do, just in case Oblak lands in Paris.

Respect to Liverpool and their socialist traditions

I don't expect Oblak to join - but if he comes, he'll start even ELF cup with one leg, eye & hand; because still better than what we have.

Regarding Klopp's decision - read carefully his statements at the start of window & at the end of it. He is not going to throw his toys - that little you can expect from someone paid 250K/week. Before buying Robertson - he did say that Hector wasn't perused because he still see potential in Moreno :) ....... then played Milner at left-back for whole season :(

I am waiting to read Klopp after leaving LFC - already BRogers and Ian Ayre (Former CEO), is unveiling some bitter truth, so did Rafa under the previous set of Yanks. Klopp is asked to make money for funding stadium and operate without cash inflow outside club's income, unfortunately he is not a bill printing house .... at the same time he has to keep fans happy as well so that the 54K gate doesn't shrink - what else do you expect him to say?

We are in big trouble if Mane, Firmino or Salah get injured. The back up strikers Solanke and Ings are not going to do anything. Selling both Couts and Studge followed by signing no replacements could end up being a major blunder by Klopp.

Not convinced about Kevn Trapp tbh.

Why would he join Liverpool if he wasn't going to be able to spend money? Even at Dortmund he didn't spend a lot.

Why would he join Liverpool if he wasn't going to be able to spend money? Even at Dortmund he didn't spend a lot.

Leno is much better than Trapp, and he is at Leverkussen - money can buy him. Money - over 35mn BP.

At BvB, he did spend actually and spend lot when necessary - he is a sort of specialist in building own team, therefore he brought young players at BVB, but not cheap. To understand that, just like ODI batting stats, you have to factor inflation here as well. The best example I give is Trevor Francis, first man to draw 1 mn BP as fee .... when you could have bought a ticket at Highbury with coins and Liverpool's gross revenue was less than 8 digit.

His idea is about bringing the best youth - market & revenue determines the fee, not the accountant of your club. Some of his best youth pick - Hummels, Lind'ski, Gund'goan, Subtic, Sahin, Goetze, Reus, Kagawa ... were bought young and at competitive value for the then market. Besides, price of youth depends often on availability of domestic talent - Klopp managed BVB in Germany, the most consistently superior soccer nation in world, where availability of talent is abundance. He paid Euro 4mn in 2008 for 20 years old Mats Hummels, which wasn't cheap at all that time and if Hummels was an English, even in 2008, he would have cost much more than 4mn.

Here at Liverpool, we are happy to take 450mn revenue, then believe every teams' Manager, scouts are drunk and spend most of their time in pubs & brothels around Southampton - otherwise you don't expect in this market a CL quality GK at 23, will be available for 4.5mn and no other suitor will join the race.

People try to believe that it's Klopp - I don't, because I can plot dots & connect as well. If you think that Klopp convinced Yanks - he'll make transfer profits, sell every player that can draw OTT fee, loan every senior player that isn't required for the 18 men match day squad, and still commit trophies, then I have to say - Yanks are too naive.

Paul Joyce and James Pearce saying we're unlikely to follow up on Alisson due to his very high price tag and Klopp's faith in Karius.

However we shouldn't be put off by the price tag. Its better making one big purchase on a proven GK who'll last you 5-6 years instead of making multiple, smaller purchases on GKs who aren't of the necessary standard and will be sold anyway.

Klopp is such a wonderful Manger, with his attacking tactics - a complete game was spoiled by that goal otherwise near perfect game.

I felt gutted after we rented/sold Studge and Couts thinking the season was all downhill from there but it seems the gaffer got it right!:14: It was Klopp's choice not to spend money in the January window, don't blame the owners for that. His top targets were unavailable at the time unless he agreed to paying absurd money for the likes of Lemar. We were on fire today against a team who have been difficult to defeat since Moyes took charge. The three up front in particular are Brazil and Barcelona like with their telepathic understanding and will only get better. The Ox is turning it on as well, I thought we'd miss Lallana but he's got to fight for his place now after returning from injury. Keita will come in with Can possibly exiting at the end of the season. Where as VVD has improved the back line we still need further reinforcements and a new goalie in the summer a priority despite the improvement Karius has shown. Anfield is rockin', it's the place to be again!:klopp

Even if the results don't reflect it right now - still not a good idea to gut your striking options and not have replacements lined up.

However Klopp is doing an excellent job currently after some poor defensive displays in the first third of the season. We seem to be able to score at will and even defensively things have picked up.

If this league wasn't so corrupt, rigged and completely lacking in restraints to allow City to financial dope their way to a title, we'd be in a title race.

Lets face it! We would mind City's money:ashwin Having said that we are still much better too watch then them.

Another excellent result. A tidy 2-0 - my favourite scoreline.

I have to admit that as a united fan I'm getting a bit envious of the style of play of 'Pool and City...

Surely the two teams cannot keep up such an intense style for too long

Klopp doing wonders despite selling yet not replacing Couts. I am gladly eating my words now, was desperate to see a Lemar bought in then but the gaffer knew better. Now we gotta keep and add to the likes of Mane, Salah and Firmino. Ox has also been another really good signing by JK who most fans at the time had great doubts about. Even Karius has been performing greatly with a great save today so credit to him for that. Not having the money of City we need to be more clever with it, still need a holding midfielder, keeper assuming Mignolet leaves and a replacement for Couts. Any change from that then a partner for VVD can be purchased as well. Today's win was a test knowing Rafa who is generally a defensive manager will bombard the midfield in his attempts to stop our forwards. It was working until Salah bhai spoiled his party:amir3 I always disliked Rafa's negative style of play and over dependency on Gerrard and Torres when he was our manager. Klopp is the man! He's playing the kind of Football that makes people sit on the edge of their seat!!:salah Now rest a few for the Porto game then go all guns blazing against the Mans next weekend

i mean over a period of a couple of seasons

teams with such an intense style usually run out of steam

happened with Pep's barcelona too and klopps dortmun

Idiotic selection of lovren and Arnold ..... straight forward long balls leading to 2-0.

Klopp is a choker in big games..

Arnold has been in very good form recently and Gomez has been very poor so he no choice to select him. Lovren has a good game and then a bad one but yes I would have prefered Matip over him today.

Man Utd didnt dominate , it was an even game but a bit of brilliance from Rashford for the first goal pretty much sealed the game.

It's ok, we will knock them out of the CL .....if they can over come Sevilla.

Liverpool lack the controlling MF to go with their cracker jack attack. What they would give for a young Xabi Alonso.

No creativity in midfield. Trent and Lovren gave away two goals. With Mourinho's negative tactics we were gonna struggle after going two down. Should have at least been awarded one penalty if not two had the ref not bottled it. Need to sign a partner for VVD where as Keita should provide creativity in the middle.

Jamie carragher in big bother spat at a 14 yr old girl

Could be sacked

Funny Vinnie jones interview calling him filth

I think Liverpool should bring carragher into the setup as defence coach

Bang out of order for spitting

But he is a Liverpool great

He has apologised and has been suspended. A sacking could certainly follow as well. Mind you, criticism coming from a thug like Vinnie Jones is like the pot calling the kettle back.

The "tactical genius" or "special one" just got his you know what handed back to him by Seville!:klopp Boring and negative tactics don't always work. Seville, who deserved to go through should have scored a few more. It's not as if Mourinho's men outplayed Liverpool a few days back. Out they go of the Champions League, I am sure they would swap Saturday's win for today's defeat! Great to see them put in their place today.
