Premier League 2018-19 preview No 12: Liverpool

Guardian writers’ predicted position: 2nd (NB: this is not necessarily Andy Hunter’s prediction but the average of our writers’ tips)

Last season’s position: 4th

Odds to win the league (via Oddschecker): 4-1

Jürgen Klopp did not rise to José Mourinho’s assertion that there is “a demand” on Liverpool to challenge for the title for two reasons. One is that he finds Mourinho’s age-old attempts at mind games amusing and an established part of the Premier League show. The other is that he fully accepts the demand to furnish his Anfield reign with silverware this season. Having invested over £170m in a squad that reached the Champions League final three months ago, Klopp cannot and does not shy from an expectation he has created.

“It is the next step,” the Liverpool manager admitted, before his Manchester United rival spoke of Klopp’s U-turn on heavy spending and the pressure to deliver Anfield’s first league title since 1990. Klopp is more equivocal on what might constitute “the next step”. More points, more outstanding performances and an improvement on last season’s fourth-placed finish would all represent evidence of sustained progress, he has explained. But the Liverpool manager knows his third full season will be measured by trophies and providing the strongest challenge to Manchester City’s title defence. “I am really looking forward to the season,” he said. The enthusiasm is shared by all at Anfield.

A formidable obstacle stands in the way of Liverpool and that elusive 19th league championship. It is the team they have beaten three times in competitive fixtures this calendar year: Pep Guardiola’s champions. City’s hopes of an unbeaten league campaign and first Champions League triumph were both shattered by Liverpool last season, the latter courtesy of a 5-1 aggregate defeat in the quarter-finals, yet they finished 25 points clear of Klopp’s side, winning the title by a record 19-point margin and becoming the first team in English top-flight history to reach 100 points.

A dramatic regression on the champions’ part and progression on Liverpool’s is required to stop City becoming the first club to retain the Premier League title since United in 2008-09. It is testament to Klopp’s rebuilding work since October 2015, last season’s exhilarating run to the Champions League final and a productive summer in the transfer market that his squad appear supremely well-equipped to honour their side of the deal.

No Premier League club has spent more in the close season than Liverpool who, with the £75m acquisition of Virgil van Dijk in January, have invested £250m in Klopp’s squad in 2018. They also sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona in January for a fee that could rise to £142m. Record investment levels bring no guarantee of success but the areas strengthened, combined with the club’s recent track record on transfers under Klopp, the sporting director, Michael Edwards, and the scouts Barry Hunter and Dave Fallows, fuel already lofty ambitions.

In signing Naby Keïta, Fabinho, Xherdan Shaqiri and Alisson the Liverpool manager has addressed longstanding concerns about his squad’s ability to make that next step. Those concerns – goalkeeper, midfield and strength in depth – were all exposed on the unforgiving stage of the Champions League final in Kiev.

Keïta was secured from RB Leipzig 12 months ago for an eventual fee of £52.75m, a club record at the time. Liverpool paid a premium over his £48m release clause to beat Barcelona and Bayern Munich to the midfielder’s signature. Early impressions suggest Keïta is worth the wait. The quality of his distribution is as impressive as his strength and movement in the centre of midfield.

Such dynamism was lacking towards the end of last season when Liverpool were stretched to the limit by injuries to Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Adam Lallana and Emre Can. Oxlade-Chamberlain is unlikely to feature this season as he recovers from multiple knee ligament damage. Can’s free transfer to Juventus is more of a financial setback to Liverpool.

Fabinho brings more European experience and title-winning pedigree from Monaco, where he played as both a defensive midfielder and right-back. Klopp has deployed the Brazilian in midfield during pre-season and admits that the £43.7m signing needs time to adapt to Liverpool’s style. His arrival increases the competition on Jordan Henderson, whose requests for an early return to pre-season training after the World Cup were rejected.

Of the outfield signings only Shaqiri arrives with question marks following criticism of his work-rate during Stoke City’s losing fight against relegation. For a £13m release fee, however, it is worth seeing how he responds to a manager who does not indulge individuals. When Klopp looked at his options to replace Salah in Kiev he had a choice of Lallana, who was not match fit, or Dominic Solanke. That is why Shaqiri makes sense. His ability to play across the front-line improves the manager’s game-changing options considerably. How he adjusts to not having a guaranteed starting role is the more pertinent question.

It is in goal, of course, where Klopp has made the most important and long-awaited change. The optimism would be laced with nagging doubt had Liverpool approached the season with Loris Karius and Simon Mignolet still vying for the No 1 spot. Instead the jersey belongs to Alisson, the most expensive goalkeeper in the world at £65m from Roma.

Liverpool first inquired about the Brazil international’s availability in January and were immediately dismissed. They were then quoted £90m in May, £75m in June and stalled their pursuit until Roma indicated there was room for negotiation. By then Karius had made a weak start to pre-season, although Klopp has since confirmed that victory in the Champions League final would not have been enough to divert his gaze from Alisson. The 25-year-old did not make one mistake that led to a goal against Roma in the league last season. A save percentage of 79.3% was bettered only by Jan Oblak of Atlético Madrid (82.7%) and David de Gea (80.3%), while his excellent distribution – a quality both Mignolet and Karius lack – promises to quicken Liverpool’s attacking play. Should Alisson prove as successful as Liverpool’s last purchase from Roma, there will be a solid foundation to the anticipated title challenge.

Klopp’s confidence is based not only on new faces. Targets have been secured early, unlike last year when he was forced to delay deals for Keïta and Van Dijk. There has been no uncertainty surrounding the future of key players with Salah and Firmino both committing to new five-year contracts and Sadio Mané expected to follow suit. Salah and Firmino have doubled their weekly wage to around £200,000 while Liverpool will proceed with a new £50m training complex at Kirkby. The club is investing in the long term.

Salah has looked fit and a class apart in pre-season and youngsters like Curtis Jones and Rafael Camacho have seized their opportunities to impress. The only hiccup of the summer was the aborted £53m move for the Lyon playmaker Nabil Fekir. Regardless, the range and quality of options now available to the Liverpool manager are the strongest Anfield has witnessed for some time. The demands have increased also. Klopp has no problem with that.

We have made some good signings in Shaqiri, Fabinho, Alisson and Keita. Still feel a creative midfielder is required before the window closes at 5 pm on Thursday. We will score many goals for sure only that Man City will most likely match if not better us. Liverpool after having spent £170 million have to be contenders if we can keep our key players fit. Can has moved on, Lallana is injury prone and Ox will be out for the season then there is Daniel Sturridge on a comeback trail. A fit Sturridge will add another dimension to our already solid attack, it will be like another new signing if he remains injury free. I fully expect some departures of fringe players like Ings before deadline day as well another major signing. It could still be Nabil Fekir ending up at Anfield. Would have liked another centre back as well should VVD get injured we could be short at the back.

Is that you lmao Scousers personified :)))

I am a big Liverpool fan but not a scouser:wa.

hows the nabil fekir deal going

We tried to negotiate new terms after Nabil failed his medical. Rightfully pulled out of any deal after Lyon refused to renegotiate terms. Liverpool refused to pay the original price agreed for a player with serious knee problems that showed up in the medical. You don't pay the same money for brand new products that you would for used or second hand ones. We've moved on from that deal now.

They look much more solid so far this season.

Allison and Keita look like excellent additions to the squad.

Could be the main challengers to Man City.

Selhurst Park is always a tough place to visit . Glad we bagged the 3 points tonight .

Things were pretty uncomfortable today for Liverpool. Salah is still missing that killer instinct from last season.

Keita, Mane and Alisson have looked really good so far.

The hoopla and hype surrounding Liverpool is getting nauseating. They should not forget that the tea cups in the Anfield kitchen are the only cups they have won under Klopp so far.

What a mistake by Alisson. Liverpool fans are probably having Karius nightmares.

Allison trying to be overly clever by attempting a Cryuff turn in his own box for which he needs a severe telling off. Just needs to be normal as he's a fine goalie without taking such needless risks. Liverpool still not at their best with the front three not functioning like they were last season. I would drop Firmino who appears tired or even Salah for a few matches and play Sturridge instead. Four out of four wins so far is a perfect start to the season even if we're not on fire.

great game against chelsea today
should have won it but still we are unbeaten

Should have won the game. Liverpool were much the better side. They created chances, just couldn't put them away. The scary thing is Liverpool front 3 haven't been at there best and they have still been winning games!!!

I wouldn't worry about Salah. He is getting into goal scoring positions, just isn't finishing them. Also he is making threatening runs still. Keita has to start ahead of Henderson, he is a better passer and is very good at carrying the ball. The only way he will adapt to the league is by playing . Not by watching Henderson.

All in all a decent performance by Liverpool. There best is still to come.

Shaqiri missed a sitter. Two off the line as well in a match controlled by Liverpool. Hazard got a good opener but Sturridge's one was better. With Firmino and Salah rather ineffective at the moment I feel Sturridge and Shaqiri deserve more starts. Allison also made a few good saves as well however by and large Liverpool should have won it if the finishing was better.

By the way, I met Firminho recently whilst out shopping - what a really nice guy he was.

Alisson = Karius V2.0

Was this a lazy prediction or have you actually seen him play?

He has been very solid bar one mistake against Leicester in my opinion. Good shot stopper and commands the box very well.

Made two excellent 1-on-1 saves in the Chelsea game.

Two very important matches coming up for Liverpool. Win them and we will be top in the EPL and heading towards the next round of the Champions League as well. According to many reports we'll be signing Aaron Ramsey from Arsenal in January as well. A brilliant player who like Ox should flourish under Klopp's coaching. He should provide the creativity I feel we're still lacking in the middle of the park.

Xherdan Shaqiri: Liverpool midfielder to miss Red Star Belgrade game in Serbia

Shaqiri made a double-headed eagle gesture, which symbolises the Albanian flag, after scoring against Serbia at the World Cup in the summer
Liverpool have left Xherdan Shaqiri out of their squad to face Serbian side Red Star Belgrade in the Champions League on Tuesday because they want to "avoid any distractions" that may be caused by the midfielder's Albanian heritage.

Shaqiri, 27, is an ethnic Albanian from Kosovo, where a Serbian crackdown on the Albanian population ended with Nato military intervention in 1999.

After scoring for Switzerland against Serbia this summer, he celebrated by making a double-headed eagle gesture, which symbolises the Albanian flag.

He was fined 10,000 Swiss francs (£7,632) by Fifa for the celebration, which happened during a World Cup group-stage match.

"We have heard and read the speculation and talk about what kind of reception Shaq would receive and although we have no idea what would happen, we want to go there and be focused 100% on football and not have to think about anything else," said Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp.

"We are keen to be respectful and keen to avoid any distractions. So, for that reason, Shaq is not involved and he accepts and understands this."

Klopp added Liverpool "have no political message" and want the focus to be on the game "free from anything else".

Shaqiri, who started Liverpool's 4-0 home win over Red Star last month, was born in Yugoslavia and was still a child when his family emigrated to Switzerland.

Liverpool go into Tuesday's game, which kicks off at 17:55 GMT, top of their Champions League group.

I still think this is Liverpool's best chance to win the Premier League for many years.

Yes Man City are brilliant, but if they pick up a few injuries or lose form then Liverpool could overtake them.

I think they have slowed down since the loss to Napoli and even Salah looks like a typical one season wonder.

Very much possible, still unbeaten in the PL. Man City are very clinical in attack, they know how to put the ball in the back of the net which means they are likely to win most games. Liverpool must just keep up with them and hope City slip up to take the title. It's turning out to be another fascinating season.

With Man City two points clear I fear they could run away with the league. Liverpool are not like they were last season. We are not as fluent or dangerous when going forward this time round. In particular Salah seems off colour, it appears as if he is still carrying the injury from last seasons Champions League final. Tomorrow's CL match is an important one for us.

Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge has been charged by the Football Association with misconduct for alleged breaches of its betting rules.

The charge relates to the period of January 2018 and Sturridge has until 18:00 GMT on Tuesday, 20 November to respond.

Mane extending his stay is a major boost. Still need a a replacement for Couts as our midfield at the moment is one dimensional. We are strongly being linked with Christian Pulsic battling for his signature with Chelsea.

Liverpool and Senegal forward Sadio Mane has agreed terms on a new long-term deal at Anfield.

The 26-year-old joined the club from Southampton on a five-year contract in June 2016 for a fee of £34m.

Since then he has gone on to make 89 appearances in all competitions for Jurgen Klopp's side, scoring 40 goals.

"I am very happy to extend my time at Liverpool. It is a great day for me and I have made the best decision in my career," he said.

Talks over the new deal, which is believed to run until 2023, were opened at the end of last season but have only been finalised now.

"I am looking forward to everything - to helping the team, to helping the club achieve our dreams and, especially, to win trophies," he added.

"I've always said, when I knew I had a chance to come here I didn't have to think twice. The right club in the right moment and with the right coach as well. I came here and was very happy."

Mane was voted the club's Player of the Year and Players' Player of the Year in his debut season and then scored 10 of his 20 goals last season in the Champions League as Liverpool reached the final.

He went on to play for Senegal at the 2018 World Cup in Russia, scoring once in three outings.

He was recently named on the 30-man shortlist for the 2018 Ballon d'Or and is among the five contenders for this year's BBC African Footballer of the Year.

"I can't think of a single club anywhere in Europe that wouldn't want a player like Sadio available to them, so the fact he wants to remain with us says something about where we are currently," said Reds boss Klopp.

"He is a such an important member of our team and squad. He radiates joy and I think this is reflected in his performances and impact on the pitch.

"The only criticism I could ever have of Sadio is that maybe at times he is the only one not to see just how good he is - but as an attacking player he is the complete package.

"Maybe the other thing which is lost on some who don't know Sadio is just how ambitious and hungry he is to achieve things and be successful. He is more driven than I think many will be aware of."

Mane's deal follows similar long-term commitments by Mane's fellow forwards Roberto Firmino, who agreed his deal in April, and Mo Salah, who signed a new contract in July.

Christian pulisic is more a winger rather than a creative midfielder. Still find it hard to believe that we did not get nabil fekir because of medical reason.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp insists Daniel Sturridge's focus has not wavered despite his looming Football Association misconduct charge for breaching betting rules.

The 29-year-old has stressed he "categorically has never gambled on football" and has requested more time to contest the charge having initially been given until Tuesday this week to respond.

Klopp said the striker remains in contention for the trip to Watford.

"You don't see any influence on Daniel in training, so that's good," he said.

"I don't know, I cannot say actually, anything about the case. It is difficult to get information about it but in training he is completely normal: in good shape, looks sharp, looks focused, but of course it is something you do not want to be involved in.

"But from my point of view, and until someone tells me something different and as long as he trains well, he is 100 per cent in contention."

Nonetheless I'd still like for us to sign Pulsic. Being a very talented American it will provide us with many marketing opportunities as well. Trust the medical team who must have found something in Fekir knee that is a major concern. We don't need a player who breaks down on the first week of next season. I'd like to see us go for Aaron Ramsey in January then Ox Chamberlain will also be returning soon.

After scoring the opening goal in Liverpool's 2-1 win at Leicester City at the start of September, Sadio Mane could have been forgiven for celebrating after the game.

In reality, the unassuming Senegalese forward, 26, was content to help out with cleaning the toilets at a mosque in Liverpool.

The image, which was widely shared on social media, was a striking contrast to the stereotypical image of 'pampered' Premier League footballers.

Mane is happy to be away from the limelight, according to the imam at Al Rahma Mosque in the Toxteth area of Liverpool.

"Sadio requested that no video was sent out. He wanted to remain discreet and wasn't doing it for publicity," says Abu Usamah Al-Tahabi.

"He comes to the mosque often. At his house he has a Bentley - but he comes to us in a not-so-fancy car, so he is incognito.

"He's not a person looking for fanfare. There's no arrogance."

This humility is evident in a number of stories about Mane.

Before the Champions League final in May, he gifted Liverpool shirts to locals in his hometown of Bambali in Senegal.

"There are 2,000 in the village. I bought 300 Liverpool jerseys to send to the people in the village, so the fans can wear to watch the final," said Mane.

Bambali is where Mane watched Liverpool's famous comeback against AC Milan to win the 2005 Champions League final - at the age of 13. And his home is never far from his mind.

"Sadio comes from a poor community. He is the type of guy who will help. He has a lot of initiatives and has helped build a mosque in his home village," adds Al-Thabi.

Mane's personality has also helped him to become a favourite with Liverpool supporters.

"Fans like him because he's humble. In Liverpool, the worst thing you can do is be too flash and too pleased with yourself. He's not like that at all," says John Gibbons from The Anfield Wrap podcast.

Gibbons says "everyone in Liverpool finds Mane really approachable" and explains how a chance meeting with a fan in a supermarket highlights his low-key character.

"He was shopping in an Asda in Hunts Cross wearing traditional dress when a fan holding a baby asks for a picture.

"Mane is then stood there holding the baby and smiling. It's the fact he's just in a normal supermarket. A lot of people who've met him said he's very approachable and sort of a bit shy."

On the pitch, Mane is also happy to step out of the limelight for the benefit of the team.

"When Liverpool signed him, he was wide right and was probably player of the season. Then we sign [Mohamed] Salah and Sadio just moved to the left," says Gibbons.

"He made no complaints and got on with it. He was asked to do more of a team role and played a bit deeper while Salah was the star."

Mane isn't a man who deals in complaints. In a recent game against Arsenal he had a goal incorrectly ruled out for offside.

When interviewed after the match, he refused to criticise the officials and even referred back to the opening day of the season - when his goal against West Ham was allowed to stand despite him having been in an offside position.

This selflessness is not a surprise to Mike Hughes from BBC Radio Merseyside Sport.

"After a match I try to get him to describe how big a part he's played, but he is always eager to play down his role and bump up everyone else in the team.

"That just shows the character of the man."

In a Liverpool team that continues to improve under manager Jurgen Klopp, Mane remains a standout performer.

He was a pivotal member of the side that reached the Champions League final, scoring 10 goals in the competition, including strikes in the knockout stages against Porto, Manchester City and Roma.

He also finished the Premier League season with 10 goals, playing a key role as part of the Reds' feared front three alongside Roberto Firmino and Salah.

Mane, who arrived at Anfield via Metz, Red Bull Salzburg and Southampton, then became the first Senegalese player to score a goal in the Champions League final - poking home from Dejan Lovren's header to equalise for Liverpool against Real Madrid in Kiev.

Despite his efforts, Real Madrid ran out 3-1 winners, providing Mane with bittersweet memories of the occasion.

"I scored in the Champions League final. I was very happy - but after, the result is more important," he said.

It didn't take long for Mane to overcome the disappointing result in Ukraine, as he headed to the World Cup in Russia with Senegal.

During his side's second group match against Japan in Ekaterinburg, Mane scored his first goal at a World Cup finals.

"One of my best days so far in football," was how Mane described the occasion.

It was also a moment of redemption on the international stage. In January 2017, Mane missed from the spot during a penalty shootout against Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations quarter-final.

Cameroon won with the next kick and an inconsolable Mane was helped off the pitch by his team-mates.

Mane, who has just signed a new long-term Liverpool deal, has also flourished in the Premier League this season, with six goals in the Reds' opening 13 games.

He wouldn't want to dwell on that statistic though. For him, team glory will always outweigh individual brilliance.

Liverpool's Brazilian goalkeeper wasn't the only one. Nobody could quite believe their eyes when Jurgen Klopp sprinted on to the Anfield pitch in celebration at Divock Origi's crazy stoppage-time winner in the Merseyside derby.

It was a truly bizarre goal. Virgil van Dijk's shot looked to be looping harmlessly out of play, but dropped back down and, with England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford making a mess of tipping it clear, Origi was on hand to head in the loose ball and send home manager Klopp on an impromptu sprint on to the playing field.

The former centre-back certainly had a bit more pace than another famous touchline incursion in Premier League history.

Klopp broke the rules of the game by entering the pitch, with managers confined to the technical area around the dugouts "except in special circumstances".

He was quick to apologise after the match and added that he would wait for any Football Association reaction.

"I have to apologise because I didn't want to be disrespectful - but I couldn't stop myself. It just happened," said the German.

"I'm not sure what the FA has to do in a situation like this but I will have to wait.

"If I could describe how I felt when the goal went in, then I would have control over it. We don't want to look for excuses but that's how it is.

"The plan was not to run [on to the pitch to celebrate]. When I chose to stop I was close to Alisson. He was surprised."

BBC Radio 5 live summariser Robbie Savage said he had "never seen anything like it", while Everton boss Marco Silva had no issue with Klopp's actions.

"I didn't see Klopp's reaction and if we scored that goal and had been so lucky I might have done the same," said the Portuguese.

"I didn't see any disrespect."

Is there a cultural difference too? In 2017, Klopp's former Borussia Dortmund assistant David Wagner was banned for two games for running down the touchline to celebrate a winner against Leeds.

He said: "In British culture it seems to be disrespectful if I celebrate with my players - it is different in Germany to be fair."

But not everybody was so forgiving.

Former England full-back Danny Mills was scathing of Klopp's behaviour on BBC Radio 5 live.

"I would like to think that Jurgen Klopp will get into trouble for that," he said.

"If other managers do that - and we know one in particular - he'd get absolutely slaughtered.

"It's absolutely shocking what Jurgen Klopp does. OK, go down the touchline a little bit, come out of your technical area, celebrate with your staff on the bench - I don't have a problem with that at all.

"But to run into the middle of the pitch, I think it's disrespectful to Everton.

"There are so many managers that get absolutely hammered but Klopp is very media friendly, everybody seems to love him and he can't do anything wrong.

"You cannot go on to the middle of the pitch, no matter what the circumstances."

For Pickford, the goal was a low point for one of England's World Cup heroes. He had made a fine save in the first half to deny Xherdan Shaqiri but totally misjudged Van Dijk's wild shot to gift Liverpool two points.

"Everyone is devastated and silent in the dressing room, we are consoling Jordan," said Toffees defender Michael Keane.

"He was unlucky. He has been brilliant for us. Everyone is devastated because of the work we put in. We had our chances and came close. We are devastated for ourselves and the fans."

Silva added: "We will analyse the moment with Jordan. It was a bad moment for him - but I told him he has done many amazing things.

"It was a lucky day for Liverpool."

https://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/328824-joe-gomez-injury-latest-liverpool

Liverpool can confirm Joe Gomez sustained a fracture to the lower left leg during the 3-1 win at Burnley on Wednesday night.

The defender needed to be substituted after 23 minutes at Turf Moor following a challenge from which he was unable to continue.

Gomez’s injury was further assessed by the Reds’ medical team at Melwood on Thursday.

Initial indications suggest the 21-year-old is facing a spell of up to six weeks out of action, though this is dependent on how his treatment and rehabilitation programmes progress.

A few injuries with Mane and Gomez on the treatment table. Mane should be back soon where as Lovren will step in for Gomez. A visit to Bournemouth on Tuesday followed by the crucial must win Champions League match versus Napoli on Tuesday. Then it's the Mancs at Anfield next weekend.

Mo Salah bites back. Credit to the “one season wonder” for a brilliant Hat-trick.

Salah should be scoring near 30 goals this season despite a somewhat slow start. We are not as devastating up front as last season perhaps due to the tightening up at the back. VVD has been awesome worth every penny that we paid for him. The man is colossal at the back hardly ever missing a header. Still feel we need a creative midfielder in January to add more depth in midfield. Alisson the goalie also deserves a mention, he has probably saved us some 7 points so far with crucial saves. It's a good time to be a red:ma

We are not going to win the EPL folks.

Winning EPL is a 38 game marathon, not 100 metre dash like H&A cup ties - we simply don't have the squad depth for winter rush, when in 6 weeks, around 12-13 games are scheduled under sub zero temperature on heavy pitch. Pep has enough on his bench for a squad that can finish in top 4 of EPL - he'll rotate his billion $ squad in 2nd half of the season ..... and Klopp'll head to academy for substitutes.

After 5 seasons of transfer profit, this year we are net off around 80mn negative, and we can see the impact - Pep has blown over half a billion on a squad that won EPL, somewhere this will count. Klopp is like 5-1 against Pep on head to head - that indicates his tactical nuances and his ability to win single game against a better squad; but he can't do it over 6 months. After Lovren got injured, now Gomez has broken leg and Klopp had to start Matip at CB..... one more injury & he'll have to play Milner at LB & Robertson at CB ...... Pep's reserve back line cost Mansoor 250mn and this is the case in every area of the pitch.

We need at least 3 players in January to win EPL - one starting CB (60mn+), a replacement for Coutinho (70mn+), and may be Rabiot. Good to have a No. 9 to cover for Firmino.

There is just never any pleasing you even if we are top of the league you will find a reason to cry and moan. We don't have the money of Man City so we just have to live with what we have for the time being. It's all about if's and but's with you of Gomez and who not getting injured. We'll just have to step up in that case, even if we had a replacement no top class defender one would want to play third choice to Gomez or Lovren waiting for either one to get injured. That also applies to other players you have mentioned on your wanted list that who will you drop to fit them in. Our priority for the time being would be a replacement for Couts. If we did win the league you'll start moaning over how we've got no chance of retaining it! Also let me remind you that the return of the Ox early next year will be like a new signing as well. You need to understand the lyrics of our anthem of what it means to "walk on with hope in your heart."

Money does not guarantee success otherwise Man Utd who have spent much more then us wouldn't be struggling at mid table.

I bet all Liverpool fans were watching Match of the Day last night, box of Kleenex about. Now their destiny is in their own hands. Watch em wilt under the pressure. Just like Stevie G (oi), waiting for the slip up, they have had more than their share of luck this season.

I am more than happy than you for our stand, be sure about that. But, I am not delusional - we could have won 3 EPLs by now in last 5 years had it stopped in mid DEC. In Europe only EPL carries on the harsh winter period, while in much better weather Spain, Italy, France & Germany goes for 3-4 weeks break - you have to factor that. Already at risk of missing CL, once 2 games/week started to hit us. If we can stay on top of the table by end of January, I'll be first one to sing YNWA.

I have nothing against Klopp or FSG here, but reality is one can't compete with bottomless oil money. What I have seen is MCity is vulnerable against high pressing teams, if their attack can be negotiated - wait for January, Pep is going to spend another 100mn for his already impressive 250mn back line - we need minimum coverage for CB/Right back (Milner can't serve there for long as not everyday we'll be playing Bournemouth), and a replacement for Coutinho; that's not luxury, bare minimum when you have sold one player for 100mn+.

Now they are top, their destiny is in their own hands, it is theirs to lose, their fans have gotta believe.

Let's see how long they last at the top?

I know you hate Pep but he has said they won't be signing anyone in January. And if they have the money why can't he sign players? As a Liverpool fan you can't mock anyone for spending money. You spent world record on a GK and a CB.

Sane wasn't the best winger in the world when City signed him,Stones wasn't the best CB in the world as well,Jesus is a young talent with potential. They overpay for players who fit there system and then Pep coaches them into world class players.

You literally signed the best GK avaliable , and the best CB avaliable. Neither of those 2 players require much more coaching.

Also you don't always need to spend big money to win the league lol. You are competing with City with Robertson,TAA,Gomez,Milner ,and Henderson as key parts of your 11.

You are obsessed with prices. There is more than enough talent in the world of football now. It's all about scouting and finding the talent.

If money was the deciding factor Man Utd would not be mid table and we would not be top of the league. Our problem has been the mid and bottom placed teams more then anything else who spend much less then we do. Over the past few years we've done well against the top sides including City as well. Our inability to compete financially is not all doom and gloom as you make it out to be. As I said just blindly buying players is not the way to go at all. Klopp will buy new players when required and could have signed Fekir in the summer had he wanted to.

Klopp paid in total 12mn for 3 defenders - Robertson 8mn, Jomez 4mn & TAA ZERO ...... latest I see their combined value is 170mn+

It's not about hating Pep, but he is the most over hyped Manager in world. Most of his fans credit him for that Barca generation, which is a steal - La Messia academy flourished under Frank Rijkaard, who was in charge from 2003 June to 2008 June. What Pep achieved for Barca in 4 years was matched by Enrique in 2 years and had he been in charge Tito would have also matched those 2 - it's the unreal Barca generation led by probably the best ever Club player at his position that was key, Pep was there just at the right time.
His style is indeed eye catching, but so was Brendan Rogers for Liverpool, without the billion dollar bucket. If he doesn't sign anyone in January, that'll be only because of FFP - last window, in that squad he signed Mahrez!!!

I have seen top managers changing game at half time and coming back from behind to win or compete - Sir Alex was a master of that, Rafa, Arsen as well. Old Jo Mou was as good as anyone reading the tactical game - won a CL match at OT against Sir Alex; even recent Mou few weeks back beat NCastle 3-2 from 0-2, using Pogba as CB in a 3-4-3 formation and his 3 scorers were substitutes. Last week, we saw 2 different Chelsea in 2 halves and Sirri is using Kante at right Centre MF - so far 2 goals & 2 assists .............. show me one game against top side where Pep has changed the game after break!!!! Lyon was even better after half at Ettihad. He picks the highest valued players at their position and plays him there, then buys an equally expensive back-up for bench. Milner was among top 3 LBs for last season in Klopp's team, and now he is playing Firmino as false 9, while Salah as CF!!!!

Pep has the best players in world, hence his team will win lot, but last year Mou did delay his title at Ettihad. It's not hate, but yes you can say I am extremely irritated by Pep and ManCity - they are spoiling the transfer market and basically killing the contest, by manipulating their accounts, which includes showing fake income from ticket sale, being sponsored at obnoxious amount by another concern of their owner.... Abrahamovic's Chelsea was also plastic, but at least it was run like a soccer club.

VVD was never the defender like this before Liverpool, otherwise till the age of 26 he won't have been at Celtic & Southampton - and most importantly Pep decided not to match Liverpool's offer, because he didn't see it. You can check the figure - at the age of 27, he has only 24 caps for Holland, and he debuted at 24 (2015), for a bang average Dutch side, for whom by the age of 19, Matthijs de Ligt has 13 Caps and at 23, Bournemouth's Nathan Ake has 10 caps. Allison is the only OTT purchase, but that's only because Neymar & Coutinho's transfer suddenly inflated the transfer market and we needed a GK, after wasting 6-7 years to buy a "bargain" GK. As I said, we had to spend somewhere after 5 years of transfer profit and selling Suarez, Starling & Coutinho in last 3 years - I am damn sure had FSG not spent this window, Mo, Mane & Firmino would have submitted a transfer request. These players won't have wasted their best 4-5 years to keep Liverpool at 4th ......

Leicester is one in a century example, but it happens to be a fact that the wonderful Liverpool team of 1970s-80s, followed by Fergi's Der Devlis for next 2 decades were also the highest spender in transfer market and highest wage payer.

You have missed my entire theme of posts in Liverpool thread - FIRST OF ALL, we are not financially unable. Liverpool is the most popular 3-4 brands globally in soccer world; it has a 99%+ occupancy record for a 54K stadium with the highest ticket price outside London and a 7 year's waiting list for season ticket; it has the 3rd highest online fan base/members globally, it has among the highest pulls in North America & Asian markets .... this is Liverpool, the most successful club in English soccer, with top 6 Gross revenue in this decade in club Soccer world, despite missing 5 CLs in 9 years - that's Liverpool for us. FSG's Liverpool was behind Watford, Huddesrfield and Burnley over a 4 years period in net spending!!!!! This year, FSG had to spend because the stake (CL) is worth 85mn, and they didn't see MU doing so poor - obviously Arsenal & Chelsea were to do well - that makes 6 to fight for 4 spots ...... FSG is cunning, manipulator, but not fool, do know their maths.

So wait John Stones was one of the best CBs in the world when he signed for City? Leroy Sane was the best winger in the world ? You haven't answered my question. Manchester City just over pay for players who fit their system.

So when Pep signs good players it isn't fair but when Klopp signs for big money it's fair? And your asking for Klopp to buy £60 million but Pep can't do that :)))? If you have the money you spend it but Liverpool fans should be the last fan base mocking Pep for spending money .

How do you know what Pep saw in VVD? That same window he wanted Fred and Sanchez yet the board didn't back him. Stop acting as though Pep gets everything he wants . Klopp has gotten everything he wanted and still won't win a trophy :)) . The only reason VVD didn't leave last summer was because no one wanted to pay £75 million last summer but Klopp knew he had to overpay to get the player.

You seem to equate prices with quality. You paid £40 million for Fabinho and we paid £26 million for Torreira. Who is the better player ? I am 100 percent certain had Torreira been valued at £50 million you wouldn't have downplayed him like you did at the time we signed him. I told you he would adapt to the premier league and you had doubts for reasons which didn't make sense at all.

I don't think Stones still is among top defenders in World, let alone one of the best; in England may be, but he won't make Germany, France or Italy squad of 23. Sane has pace and he'll always do well in EPL, particularity for high pressing team like ManCity with so much quality in midfield. He still doesn't start for Germany, who plays a more compact game around midfield.

I never equate quality with price, otherwise won't have mentioned Salah, Firmino & Mane here - BUT, I don't like managers buying out of their troubles. Price definitely comes with quality, but it has a factor of the contract duration as well - Torreira was on his last year, while Fabinho & Fred had 3 years to run their contract. Torreira is playing well, but just after Liverpool transfer, Fabinho also started for Brazil - that's itself a status. Fabinho is extremely skillful, but not the fastest guy for EPL, might move to Italy or Spain, where I am sure he will be a success. I give Arsenal scouts lots of credit to find such a player on his last year of contract, but the way you are boasting Torreira, I feel you were more concerned about his success than me; just relax and allow him to play a full season - British winter season is coming for another Latin player. The French kid Goundouze$%&#!!# is playing actually better than Torreira as holding midfielder, while if Torreira is to replace Ozil, he'll have to play lot, lot better.

Liverpool fan base have seen enough of building a club & history without laundered Oil money, don't think there is any shame in spending big in one window, after 4 years of net profit and churning out best 3 players at mark-up price. So far, Pep has lost 3 head 2 heads against Chelsea, 3 against Liverpool & 2 against ManU - Mansoor's money is serving him enough resources for 65 games in 10 months, H2H is about Manager v Manager; despite not wining anything Liverpool's Rafa was respected by the other 3 (SAF, Wenger & Mou), because he had a better H2H against them with a far inferior squad.

Next move for him is to PSG or Qatar for 2022 WC - the day he achieves something without a fat cheque book and spoiling the market, we'll come back here to discuss.

Big game.. really nervous.. Winning by 2 goals against an Italian side is never easy...

Look at the net spend. Man city despite not having the same commercial clout as United or Liverpool managed to spend close to 400 million during Pep era. Compare that to LFC. Yes we bought Van Dijk and Allison but we also sold Coutinho. If Klopp gets to spend the same (Net spend) as Pep or Mourinho, no other team would get a chance.

You are jumping the gun on Torreira and Fabinho.. While both are good but it is unfair to say one is better than the other at this time.. Give it a year before you judge.

So you are just proving my point. These players wouldn’t do xyz elsewhere but which manager is getting the best out of them?

Show me some proof that he had 1 year left on his contract because I haven’t seen that reported anywhere. Fabiano is a good player but he won’t be a regular player for Brazil but if you want boast about 1 cap that’s up to you. Torreira will be fine for the winter period, he is going to have a drop in form but I have no doubt in my mind he will become a world class player. You should just admit you was wrong on him.

Torriera isn’t going to play in Ozil position. We are having to play 3 at the back to get the best out of Kolasnic and due to our lack of wingers . His bets position is dm.

Klopp has lost big games heck he hasn’t even won a trophy for years.

Pep is a world class manager. He can go where he wants. If he has success at PSG why can’t every manager do the same with the same resources?

So what? If City have the money they can spend it how they want. Although it is frustrating to see its out of our control. Pellegrini and Mancini had the same funds yet after winning the tittle they had disastrous follow up seasons.

Torriera will be a better player than Fabiano. I have seen enough of both to come to this conclusion. Fabiano will be a good player for Liverpool but Torriera has more layers and is more dynamic.

Poetry in motion Tra la la la la.......
The best football team in the world - yes we are..

That was quality except the finishing. Could've finished 5-0 with a Mane hattrick. Yet at the same time, Liverpool were lucky Milik bailed them out with an insane save. Make of that what you will.

Also the refereeing was absolutely rubbish all night.

We are spending adequately from where I am sitting. Your beef is that we are not spending the most or more then Man City it seems! Football back then in the 1970's era was a difficult game altogether compared to today. The likes of Celtic won the European Cup having spent almost nothing as did Nottingham Forest and even Astin Villa despite Liverpool spending more then them at the time. We are poorer compared to Man City that there is no doubt about, popularity does not equal wealth. The money is there is Klopp wants to spend it as we saw during the Fekir fiasco neither has the manager ever complained about now being supported by the owners is the transfer market. Jurgen Klopp seems happy enough to me, there have been no whispers suggesting anything else at all. Being Americans they'd naturally love Red Sox more however as I said previously bringing in players just for the sake off it is not the answer. Today we qualified for the last 16 of the Champions League with the likes of Keita and Fabinho warming the bench. Ultimately, every owner is in the game to make money as well.

We're through thanks to Allison's awesome save in extra time when I has my nails in my mouth!! Missing sitter after sitter I thought it wasn't gonna be our day. Now knowing us we van win the long awaited number 6!

I have nothing against Klopp or FSG here, but reality is one can't compete with bottomless oil money.

This. I have long, long given up on Liverpool winning the league in my lifetime. If it happens it's a pleasant surprise but I won't raise my hopes. We were top of the league in November in 2002/03, and at Christmas in 1996/97, 2008/09 and 2013/14.

This is a rigged league where the champions are more often than not the ones with the greatest financial firepower and in this era that is Man City. BBC have exposed how City have been able to inflate the value of their sponsorships and the underhanded financial tactics they've deployed to get around FFP.

We cannot compete in such a financial arms race.

Come on.... This is very defeatist

Leicester won it and Chelsea has too without investing massive amounts.

Nonetheless, we too have spent huge amounts.

Which world super star have city bought? Have they prized away messi or Ronald or others?

They have bough good players and those players improved greatly.

What we need is other teams to stop rolling over and having a right old go at city when they play them. Their defence is weak and can be got at. Even before Chelsea game, Watford finally pulled their finger out and decided to have a go in last 10 mins and made city sweat.

I agree with your assessment but I disagree with your sentiment. I also disagree with the whole FFP concept. An owner must be able to spend however much he desires. That is true for all business. In turn every team must make themselves an attractive option for the richest of the rich in this world.

LFC is lucky to have the best manager in the world currently. As Klopp himself said, he want to turn doubters to believers. I am a believer today. I believe in him and his philosophy. We will win something soon.

Amazing night at Anfield, great atmosphere and what a match!

Napoli were totally dominated and although we missed a lot of chances, always in control of the game.

I hope we get a big team in the next round, Real Madrid would be great so we can take our revenge.

Klopps allergic to winning finals, he does hug his players. I might not be around on Sunday late afternoon.

Safe journey, you wont be top of league, come Sunday evening.

If Liverpool win this they have the title in the bag, all sewn up, done and dusted, game n season over, might as well hand them the trophy at end of the game...

Xherdan Shaqiri came off the bench to inspire a Liverpool victory over Manchester United that takes them back to the top of the Premier League.

Liverpool needed the win after Manchester City beat Everton on Saturday - and it was substitute Shaqiri's rapid-fire double strike in the second half that gave Jurgen Klopp's side the three points they fully deserved.

Sadio Mane's 24th-minute volley from Fabinho's perfect delivery gave Liverpool the lead their lightning start merited, only for a dreadful error by goalkeeper Alisson to give United an unlikely lifeline before the break when he fumbled Romelu Lukaku's cross into the path of Jesse Lingard.

United barely offered an attacking threat but were frustrating Liverpool until Klopp introduced Shaqiri with less than 20 minutes remaining, with devastating effect.

There was an element of good fortune about both goals, one deflected in from close range and the other off Eric Bailly to beat keeper David de Gea - but one cannot begrudge Liverpool their victory against this desperately ordinary United side.

A amateurish mistake by Alisson, but at least it didn't cost point. This guy has kept 10 clean sheets out of 17 and twice conceded 2 goals from personal error, which suggests what a fantastic job VVD is doing in front of him. Alisson, VVD & Robertson are almost certain to make the EPL team of the season.

A defining moment for Liverpool I feel. Sure Utd aren't srong atm but to beat your bitter rivals while dominating the game shows how much Liverpool have improved this season.

Scoring 3 goals in any game is good but when you score 3 and feel it should have been more, it tells the story of the match.

As for Utd, Rashford did well in defence. :P

We dominated the Mancs all evening making them chase the ball so much that their trunks were nearing their knee's!:smith It was embarrassing at times when we ran circles around them particularly in the second half. Despite gifting them an equaliser we still easily won the match against a side who have spent so much more then us in the market! VVD is a mountain and Shaqiri a snip for what we paid for him coming on and changing the match in our favour once again. No doubt Mourinho will still find a reason to moan...he will still insist that his Man Utd deserved to win taking some cheap shots at Klopp in the process. Now we have to remain consistent during the holiday period then push on after the new year where as the Mancs will struggle to make Europe altogether next season unless they win the Champions League this season!:ma This time Man Utd's negative tactics of playing for a draw did not work!
