Russia's ambassador to the UK has claimed Britain played a role in an attack on its warships - warning the country is "too deep" in the Ukraine war.

In an interview with Sky's Mark Austin, top diplomat Andrei Kelin claimed he had proof that UK special forces were involved in a Ukrainian drone assault on Russia's Black Sea fleet in Crimea and had handed 'evidence' to the British ambassador.

Asked to provide evidence of Russia's claims, Mr Kelin said: "We perfectly know about [the] participation of British specialists in [the] training, preparation and execution of violence against the Russian infrastructure and the Russian fleet in the Black Sea. We know that it has been done."

Pressed to give evidence to the public on Moscow's accusation the attack on the Russian fleet in the Black Sea was carried out under the guidance and leadership of British Navy specialists, Mr Kelin said it had been handed to the British ambassador and added that "it will become public pretty soon," perhaps today, perhaps tomorrow.

He added: "It is dangerous because it escalates the situation. It can bring us up to the line of I would say no return, return is always possible. But anyway, we should avoid escalation.

"And this is a warning actually that Britain is too deep in this conflict. It means the situation is becoming more and more dangerous."

The UK government has said such claims are false and are designed to distract from Russia's military failures in Ukraine.

A spokesperson said: "In recent days, Russia has made a range of allegations against the UK, clearly designed to distract attention from Russia's illegal invasion of Ukraine; Russia's losses on the battlefield and its bombing of civilian populations and energy infrastructure without any regard for international law and the loss of innocent life.

Moscow has cast Britain as a particularly insidious Western foil to Russia. President Vladimir Putin has said the UK is plotting to destroy Russia and carve up its vast natural resources.

Speaking after Russia accused the West of "encouraging provocations with weapons of mass destruction", Mr Kelin denied Moscow would use nuclear weapons in Ukraine.

Mr Kelin said: "The nuclear war cannot be won and it should never be fought. And we stick strongly to this statement."

Asked if Moscow could use a tactical nuclear weapon in the conflict, Mr Kelin replied: "No. The world has every assurance that Russia is not going to use [a] tactical nuclear weapon in [the] Ukrainian conflict."

nobody asked EU to become reliant on Russia. Infact when it was highlighted by Trump, people, including German politicians laughed at them. Germany dismantled their nuclear power stations, fully put their eggs in Russian basket and completely dependent on NATO for defense. Traces of explosives have been found at the sites of September’s multiple leaks from the Nord Stream gas pipelines, confirming that the breaches were the result of sabotage, Sweden’s prosecution authority has said.

“Analysis that has now been carried out shows traces of explosives on several of the objects that were recovered” from the scene in the Baltic Sea, Mats Ljungqvist, the prosecutor leading the investigation, said on Friday.

Ljungqvist said the investigation was “very complex and comprehensive” and analysis would continue in order to draw “more reliable conclusions” and determine whether any suspects could be identified. But the evidence so far was of “gross sabotage”, he said.

Swedish and Danish authorities are carrying out separate investigations into four ruptures in the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines, which carry gas between Russia and Germany via the Baltic, off the Danish island of Bornholm.

Two of the leaks occurred in Denmark’s exclusive economic zone and two in Sweden’s. A 50-metre section was missing from Nord Stream 1, the Swedish daily Expressen reported last month after publishing footage filmed by an underwater drone.

Seismologists in both countries recorded tremors in the area just before the leaks were reported that did not resemble those produced by earthquakes, and Denmark said last month that early indications pointed to “powerful explosions”.

Scientists said the 26 September ruptures, described by experts as equivalent to several hundred kilograms of TNT, could have caused one of the worst natural gas leaks ever, spewing gas including methane – the biggest cause of climate heating after carbon dioxide – into the ocean that then bubbled to the surface.

The pipelines have been at the centre of geopolitical tensions after Russia cut back its gas supplies to Europe, apparently in retaliation for sanctions imposed by the west in the wake of Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

London last month dismissed allegations by Russia that the British navy was responsible for the blasts, saying the claims were designed to distract from Russian military failures in Ukraine. Washington and Moscow have denied any involvement.

German investigators said on Wednesday they had searched a ship in January which was suspected of transporting the explosives used to sabotage the two gas pipelines. There was at this stage no evidence to suggest a foreign state was involved, they said.

Russian gas deliveries had been suspended before the blasts. Russia shut down the Nord Stream 1 pipeline in August last year, saying it needed maintenance. Nord Stream 2 had never been put into service.

The exact cause of the 26 September blasts that hit the natural gas pipelines is unknown, but it is widely believed they were attacked.

Nato and Western leaders have stopped short of directly accusing Russia of attacking its own pipelines, although the EU has previously said Russia uses its gas pipelines as a weapon against the West.
