Local umpiring watch post COVID-19

These things are part and parcel of the game. We should recognise subconscious bias is almost unavoidable in any game/career and be thankful that teams have recourse available in the form of DRS.

I won’t lose sleep over this.

ICC needs to get rid of umpires call, if it’s hitting the stumps even by a millimetre then it should be out. I don’t care about the margins of error in the DRS, if they don’t trust the technology a 100% then don’t use it at all. You either trust it or you don’t.

Spoken like BCCI of some years back.

It’s just common sense. The technology is more accurate than the human eye, so why go back to the umpire for the final decision. If the technology can’t tell whether the ball is really going to hit the stumps then why should we expect the umpires to know?

In tennis all the players trust the technology, if the balls is hitting the line by even a mm they will trust it to be accurate.

I don't know about others. I have total respect for Michael Gough. He is a world class umpire.

The problem is technology makers themselves don't believe that their system is 100% accurate. They say there is a margin of error. Until they are confident of the accuracy, others are not going to accept it.

It is different in tennis. But in cricket the technology has to project the path of the ball.

The others are okay decisions, but to give not out to Robinson was extremely stupid. It looked plumb in real time too.

Time and time again we've seen biased umpiring whenever Pak has toured England. We had countless marginal decisions (I.e. Umpires call) go against us. This is nothing new.

Unless umpires are held accountable for their decisions and there are thorough and honest performance reviews, these things will continue to happen.

India were trying to do the impossible of trying to get England out in 2 sessions on a not so helpful pitch .. There were also a couple of dropped catches/ wicket of a no ball .. we know about Virat’s dubious DRS referrals .. My point is, we then don’t need to deal with the subtle bias of (home) umpires in giving marginal decisions ( and some not so marginal ones) in favor of home team..

I actually don't have any problems with current state of drs. The main contention is with umpires call, but as long its consistent then teams will not have much to complain.
If teams judiciously use the 3 reviews , then everything evens out.

I actually don't like batsmen and bowlers asking for reviews where it's obvious it's marginal. I think they do it because they can withhold review if marginal

Wrong calls probably but biased? No, I don't think so.

English umpires were downright dreadful and biased against West Indies when they toured ENG last year. I was afraid it would be a repeat this time but not really as bad so far. Fingers crossed.

Faisal Khan Afridi of the PCB Elite Panel of Umpires has been suspended for five HBL Pakistan Super League 2022 matches and fined 50 per cent of his match fee for breaching the event’s Health and Safety protocols.

Tournament Director Salman Naseer: “The PCB had announced it will follow a zero-tolerance approach towards any Health and Safety breaches. This decision demonstrates our resolve and commitment to deliver a successful event in which all participants remain secure so that they continue to be available to their sides and entertain millions of fans following this event worldwide.”

Faisal Khan Afridi had pleaded guilty to the charge and offered his regrets.

The decision was made by the PCB Covid Committee, which also included Usman Wahla apart from Salman Naseer. While making the decision, the panel took into consideration all facts of the incident.

KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has suspended umpire Faisal Afridi, member of its elite panels of umpires, for breaching the COVID-19 protocols for the seventh edition of the Pakistan Super League (PSL). According to a PCB statement on Wednesday, Faisal had been suspended for five PSL matches and imposed a fine of 50% of match fees of his next match. Faisal was scheduled to supervise a total of seven matches for the Karachi leg of the PSL, but he wasn’t able to supervise any.

He missed his initial appointments after testing positive for COVID-19 upon his arrival at the team hotel in Karachi. He was then sent for seven-day mandatory isolation and, according to the protocol, he was not supposed to step out of his room before returning two negative PCR results. However, the 44-year-old former first-class cricketer stepped out of his room after his first negative result, without waiting for the result of the 2nd test, thus breaching the PCB’s health and safety protocols for the PSL. The PCB said that Faisal had pleaded guilty to the charge and offered his regrets. Faisal will, therefore, miss the Karachi leg of Pakistan Super League and will be available for appointment in Lahore’s leg of the tournament. However, he will lose 50% of match fees of his next game in PSL – which is approximately $1,000.

No neutral umpire in Aus vs Pak test series

How come there is no neutral umpire? I am surprised. How Australia agreed to play under Pakistani umpires from both ends.? Most series around the world have neutral umpires or they are probably all involved in IPL.

The CEC were updated on the use of home umpires from July 2020 to February 2022 due to COVID. The Committee acknowledged that the performance of home umpires was strong and had not affected games. The use of home umpires had also led to 12 members of the International Panel umpires making their Test match debut.

In line with a previous recommendation from the ICC Men’s Cricket Committee, the CEC agreed that more neutral match officials should be utilised as travel restrictions are lifted while building on the success of the use of home umpires.

As such the structure for appointing match officials for 2022-23 season will be as follows:
